So glad Jim Jarmusch had the incredibly great taste to include Yasmine in "Only Lovers Left Alive." It would have been such a shame to never have heard her sing. She's amazing.
it was basically the only really interesting part of the movie, all the rest was just a succession of "look how cool I am" moments with esthetic gazing. At least with this scene we got to discover her.
@@capucnechaussonpassion14 ahaha i agree 100%, so confused about the positive reception it got by critics. can only say it's aesthetically pleasing but that's it
I really like Yasmine's style! She captures the beautifully ancient folk roots and blends it with a modern chill by appearing with an electric guitar. She herself is so feminine and powerful in her movement and her voice.
Yes! Only Lovers Left Alive did many people a great service by introducing Yasmine to an audience that may never have had the chance to experience this beautiful voice and talented songwriter!
Just saw her perform for the first time this weekend. Was standing front row centre, and this song made me really sink into how incredibly lucky I am to be living the life I am. Couldn't help but shed a couple tears when hearing their beautiful rendition of 'Beirut'. Thank you for the experience.
"Shouei" is one of the most beatiful songs I've ever heard... So beautiful, so real... I don't know why but it remembers me of Nazim Hikmet's poems. She's an icon!
This is an old song, but anyone who has visited Beirut, especially during the civil war or the other wars in our time, will feel the tremendous pathos in this song.
Oh my goodness it’s Yasmine 🥺 love Ya Nass and the Soapkills stuff, and her outlook and input on things. Had no idea there was a Tiny Desk concert….so cool! And she did the Beirut cover 💗
@you can't leave this empty... hmm, can't say I agree. The way she moves is both sensual and gorgeous, and an intrinsic part of her and her performance, surely? We're not talking lingering shots of her chest here, just thoughtful, sensitive camerapersons (both of whom are female, I believe) capturing this duo beautifully. You're right about the jean jacket though, very cool. As is the music.
***** o, didn't know that, thanks for the advice, Luke. I assumed from 'you can't leave this empty's' comment that he/she would be happy to engage in a discussion, hence my reply. Was surprised not to find the usual 'Reply' button mind you - I assumed it was a YT glitch or I was doing something wrong, so posted my comment in the only way I could fathom. Anyways. Thanks for the nod. For ref: can you tell me what you mean by my action can have "unintended consequences leading to gaps in connectivity"?, as sounds pretty scary.
***** Wow, your reply is even scarier. I must confess, adhering to RUclips's policy wasn't at the forefront of my mind, nor will it ever be, but thanks for taking the time & trouble to share your insight. Fascinating.
Lex Hills That's exactly how I feel about it. I don't really see it as concentrating on her body in a sexual way but more as capturing the way she engages her whole self in the music and really feels it and moves with it.
I only saw two shots that focused on her body specifically, between 2:00 and 2:30. The camera seems to be trying to bring her snapping into focus. There were 2 camerapeople (don't want to assume man or woman) who seemed to focus on her snaps at around the same time in the song. I agree that women are often sexualized in entertainment industry, but I think that calling the cameraperson creepy is a bit of an over-reaction.
FYI regarding the creepy cameraman, all the 'cameramen' on this shoot were women. Narrow assumption on your part. Yasmine is an alluring performer...there was nothing about the way they shot this that was creepy.
Her body, her moves, her sensuality are all part of her voice and music. camera lens and focus surfed them beautifully. Kudos to the man or woman behind the camera.
To Bob Boilen and Denise DeBelius, Such quality work with such elegance. I very much look forward to what you will be producing in the future. If you would like me to give it a try to bring this entire NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert to NHK, let me know.
Jozef Van Wissem! You had Yasmine Hamdan on, and he also worked on Only Lovers Left Alive, alongside Jim Jarmusch. I personally think it would be great one.
Beirut: Drinking Arak (Lebanese/Syrian tranditional alcohol) , playing cards, race horses, catching pigeons X2 is everything for Beirut smelling the air (refers to going out for fun),eating air (refers to being in a bad situation, or doing a bad thing) .. has occupied the minds of Beirutians. Beirut.. a flower out of its time Beirut.. how beautiful it is, and how beautiful are its times. Beirut.. what a loss, what a shame, for such a flower to become wilted.. there's nothing to do, there's no hope, the camel has settled down and the jinx is here to stay. the merchants/dealers of Beirut, showing off and spending money recklessly have exhausted Beirut. Beirut.. a flower out of its time Beirut.. how beautiful it is, and how beautiful are its times. Beirut.. what a loss, what a shame, for such a flower to become wilted.. this is my personal translation, hope i didn't lose any of the meaning of didn't read between the lines.
Can anyone explain why she puts one or both hands up to her mouth sometimes? I can hear that it affects the sound, but is that something specific to her, or is it more common in middle eastern music or something like that? I find her blend of styles incredibly fascinating and captivating.
It is not really something common. I'm Middle Eastern and found myself asking this question, then I remembered that she tends to have this effect in many of her songs. Her style is so 'underground', eclectic and far away from commercial modern Arabic music.
Well, using the hands is also sometimes middle eastern, when folks singers are lullabying or doing their arabic/middle eastern thing they use their hands around their ears to enhance their hearing of themselves and it gives a little bit of volume too.
i love your music.. little request, is there any chance for explaining the first amazing song?, i dont speak the language unfortunately. looking forward for more of your music dear Jasmine. neighbour.
You don't have to understand Lebanese to appreciate Yasmine. I caught her 2 years ago and still overwhelmed with her music. And yes, eroticism. Something wrong with looking beautiful and moving to the music? Stop projecting your stuff people and LISTEN.
@you can't leave this empty: I know you probably won't see this but: It is really a shame, you didn't bother to check if the camera man indeed was a man … or in fact two camera women! On a lighter note, I must say, that the focus is well balanced on her and her guitarist … and not at all sexist.

Singing barefoot was really amazing in the movie
I don't understand a single lyric, but I believe every word.
***** Xenophobia is alive and well and will continue as long as corporations, religions and aggrieved privilege hold sway over public opinion.
That's how I feel about Opera Music! Although I do look up the synopsis.
And this day, to the sound of Beirut, I fell madly, completely and ruthlessly in love with Yasmine Hamdan.
Big props to the guitarist, Gabriel. All of this is lovely music.
Just saw her perform for the first time this weekend. Was standing front row centre, and this song made me really sink into how incredibly lucky I am to be living the life I am. Couldn't help but shed a couple tears when hearing their beautiful rendition of 'Beirut'.
Thank you for the experience.
Love the way she brings the incredible Lebanese magic through her music! Greetings from London 🇬🇧
"Shouei" is one of the most beatiful songs I've ever heard... So beautiful, so real... I don't know why but it remembers me of Nazim Hikmet's poems. She's an icon!
Thx Jim Jarmusch for always putting some incredible music in your movies
I will never forget seeing her live with Cocorosie! Best show ever.
Whattt?😍
I wish this would never end.
Wirklich schöner Gesang!!!Hat mich Gefreut, gehört zu haben.
I love the timbre of her voice - gorgeous!
This is an old song, but anyone who has visited Beirut, especially during the civil war or the other wars in our time, will feel the tremendous pathos in this song.
Could tell me the actual names of the songs please?
incredibly talented singer! Love the raw emotion she displays, and the simplicity of the guitar
Guitar player is so good ,he really understands how to comp this beautiful hot great singer songwriter...
Oh my goodness it’s Yasmine 🥺 love Ya Nass and the Soapkills stuff, and her outlook and input on things. Had no idea there was a Tiny Desk concert….so cool! And she did the Beirut cover 💗
Yasmine is my favorite right now. I wish her albums would come with english translations, too. I think her dancing is part of it, too, and she rocks.

Is this music as much of a trance knowing arabic? She is BEAUTIFUL in her creation/expression.

Her movement is part of her presence. Also captured beautifully in Only Lovers Left Alive. The cameraman is not creepy come on :P

Wish I'd had the balls to be as direct.
All of a sudden, I like creepy.
Thanks for that!
women can be creepy camerawomen too
I mean, how can you not focus there, she's swaying beautifully. Lovely performance all around.
Her body, her moves, her sensuality are all part of her voice and music. camera lens and focus surfed them beautifully. Kudos to the man or woman behind the camera.

Jozef Van Wissem! You had Yasmine Hamdan on, and he also worked on Only Lovers Left Alive, alongside Jim Jarmusch. I personally think it would be great one.
he ??????????
"He" meaning Jozef, not Yasmin.
This goes to prove why we middle easterners used to worship our women until God sent us the Old testament.
i like your music
mesmerising! i'd like to know the lirics in the original idiom and in english. can anyone help?

it cuts off the bass frequency in her voice. if u notice, her voice goes kinda "telephonic" when she does that.
