  • Shortly after the release of the final Talking Heads album (Naked, 1988) David Byrne was interviewed by Dave Fanning in London.
The interview discusses various albums & topics from throughout Talking Heads' history, future plans for the band, as well as David Byrne's other projects (The Last Emperor soundtrack and True Stories)
The interview also includes some mentions of the band's current relationship to each other and their future plans, which can all be pretty strange to listen to with hindsight of how things fell apart not long after this.
    Summaries of each section:
    00:00 - intro
00:55 - starts interviewing David about the production of Naked in Paris with international musicians
    05:35 - discussing Mr. Jones
08:34 - discussing The Democratic Circus (and politics)
11:25 - discussing People Like Us, True Stories, and Texas
15:48 - discussing The Last Emperor
17:09 - discussing Talking Heads' relationship (being less of a family than they used to be)
19:40 - discussing their latest producer Steve Lilywhite, U2, and salsa
22:25 - discussing The Pogues (who collaborated on Naked ) and the unreleased track In Asking Land (released in 1989 as "Carnival Eyes" on Rei Momo)
23:25 - discussing Scotland and Texas
25:53 - discussing Fear of Music, and
28:12 - discussing whether Talking Heads will tour ("we don't have plans to this year, maybe next year") + how they might split it into two (stripped back gigs for Little Creatures/True Stories songs, but larger band for Naked)
29:00 - discussing Jerry Harrison and Tom Tom Club
30:30 - discussing Stop Making Sense
32:26 - discussing True Stories, Brian Eno, and tension within the band and with the record label
    35:25 - discussing songwriting
    36:15 - outro
    Taken from fanningsession...
I applied a noise reduction filter in Audacity because the background static on the original audio is very unbearable.
After applying the filter, I relistened to a couple of minutes and it sounded alright, but I haven't relistened to the entire interview so I can't guarantee that the filter didn't cause any issues. But I can say pretty confidently that it will all sound better than it previously did.

Dave did a good job there. Very insightful especially when you read and hear how Chris Frantz reflects on David Byrne. This interview puts a different perspective on it and one that I would resonate more with.
