Looks like he has the 9mm Parabellum version of the Mauser Broomhandle. There should be a large, "9" engraved on the wood handle to denote the pistol is chambered for 9mm Parabellum, aka, 9mm Luger. His Fallschirmjager uniform is off a bit but he's wearing a nice reproduction Fallschirmjager helmet. The helmet was essentially a German Army M35 helmet without the side lower guards over the ears. These had to be removed as the parachute risers were snagging on it. The Mauser broomhandle saw little service with the German Army in WW2. Yet the broomhandle saw widespread usage with other armies in the 1920s and 30s. The Chinese in particular were enamored of the Mauser broomhandle and during the 20s and 30s numerous Chinese warlords and then the Nationalist Kuomingtang purchased as many Broomhandles as they could obtain. Mauser made a tidy profit during those decades selling innumerable broomhandles to the Chinese. Post WW1 Mauser broomhandles had slightly shorter barrels to comply with the strict terms of the Versailles Treaty.
No he doesn't have a red 9 he has a c96 rechambereed for 9mm. And yes the 4 inch and under rule which luckily didn't hit lugers but did mean the c96 had to be transformed into the bolo model!
There are a few things changed on the 1916 prussian models in 9mm that you can point out like the sight increments should go to 500 not 1000 for the heavier bullet. Honestly the grips is the worst way to tell a red9 and are only real if they are serial matching the gun and have the correct ammount of slats. The grips were the most common thing to break because the original grips had alot of slats in them and became brittle once they had been carved in. Most real red 9s I've seen don't have real grips and alot of faked red9s are c96 broomhandles either commercial or war time rechambered for 9mm which isn't all that hard to do and was quite common back in the day. I have an original 1916 model with all matching parts except the grips and the original stock and leather rig which is like a holy grail if it wasn't for the missing original grips but sadly time wears all things down. Although I have shot mine I do not anymore because it's mostly all matching and the bolt stops on the c96 would get battered with repeated use and eventually crack. Now I have a rechambered 9mm, 1930s commercial model I shoot for fun with a replaced bolt stop and firing pin in case of cracking.
