Takoyaki Recipe (adapted from Cooking With Dog)
Batter
1 egg
1/2 t. instant dashi powder (Hon Dashi)
1 t. soy sauce
pinch of salt
340 ml. ice water
100 g. cake flour
cooked octopus or shrimp, cut into 1/2" pieces
1/2 t. beni shoga (pickled ginger)
2 T. green onions, finely sliced
sakura ebi (tiny dried shrimp) *Omitted because I couldn't find it.
Toppings
okonomiyaki sauce
mayonaise
ao nori (green seaweed powder) *Omitted because I couldn't find it.
kasuobushi (bonito flakes)
Using a whisk, combine batter ingredients in a large bowl until there are no lumps. Preheat the cake pop maker for 10-15 minutes. Grease the wells of the cake pop maker with vegetable oil. Pour the takoyaki batter leaving a little room for the toppings. Add a piece of cooked octopus/shrimp to each well, along with a sprinkling of beni shoga and green onions. Allow to cook 5 minutes or until the balls begin to set. Use a couple of bamboo skewers to give the balls a quarter turn. Cook a couple of minutes. Rotate the balls again a quarter turn and cook another couple of minutes. Continue cooking and rotating until the balls are golden brown. Serve the takoyaki with okonomiyaki sauce, a drizzle of mayo, and bonito flakes. TIP: occasionally close the cake pop maker to ensure the unit stays well heated. Serves 2.

Cloudburst by Adam Drake/ Tom Jenkins music courtesy of audionetwork.com, and royalty-free Sprightly from iMovie. The next time you find yourself in Osaka, be sure to pick-up some takoyaki and you'll be an official international foodie. 🐙 Comment "Who needs cake pops? Gimme an octopus ball." below.
"She is an adorable lady and if I were not a toy poodle I would ask her out on a date." Just watched the Takoyaki video from Cooking With Dog. That bit was too too funny. And both of you are making me hungry.
troberts1 ikr i chocked out when i heard that line! 😂 it was so sudden ahaha
Me too. Just came from cooking with Dog video.
Now *this* is a kitchen hack we can get behind-brilliant Emmy! Now you just need to skewer and decorate them like Octopi and you'll have Takoyaki Pops :)
Hahaha Sounds like a great idea for an April Fool's cake pop. Hmm...
***** Well, it doesn't really have any ¿pizza' ingridients, so I don't see how it could be that.
***** GotitoGaara8 Its definitely a thin pancake batter, but wouldn't pizza dough be an awesome method to try?? Omg I am so going to do both one day.
haruhara9889 Pizza dough is way too thick, you need a batter feels like creape batter
temerarios
Cooking with Dog sent me here. Nice channel.
cbasallie Thanks!
Samee
+emmymadeinjapan There is place that serves takoyaki in little Tokyo called Maruya it next to anime jungle

Who needs cake pops? Gimme an octopus ball!
lol I actually have a cake pop maker because I thought it might be somehow useful but have never used it once because cake pops look like too much trouble. Now I finally know what to do with the bloody thing.
Man you've just saved me so much trouble trying to find a takoyaki pan! I was eying the cake pop pans for a while but I didn't know if they would get hot enough. Thanks for the video!
Love you and love Cooking With Dog! Thanks for helping make this more accessible with the cake pop maker, great idea!
thank you so much!! i could only find the cake pop pan here and also you are one of the only youtubers that didnt use takoyaki cake mix(which they als don`t sell it here) so thank you so much!!!
+alice5753 You're welcome and as Francis would say, "Good luck in the kitchen."
Cooking with dog is how I found your channel such a long time ago! It lead me to RunnyRunny999 through a Crepes making video which lead me to his eating treats send by viewers video which send my to your eating japanese treats videos. Three great channels to follow.
Yay! Recommended Videos for the win.
Agree!
Cooking with dog led me to runny to your channel a long time ago! :)
Always look forward to all three channels videos!
That's my favorite street food from Japan! I've wanted to make it at home but thought you'd need a special pan, grill, etc. That cake pop maker is ingenious! Thanks for a great video. I'm looking forward to your next one.
I gave up trying to find a takoyaki pan, but it's great to know there's a simple workaround. Thanks!
Yet another reason why I need to buy one of these things! I've always wanted to make this, and the cakepop machines are pretty cheap. Thanks for sharing the recipe Emmy and Cooking with Dog!
Oh my, this video was a Godsend... it was always such a production having to stand by the stove, cooking Takoyakis until everybody's had their fill, NO MORE! Got my machine and it is perfect... thank you!!!!!!
Found your video thru Cooking with Dog, and Im really glad I did. What a wonderful hack!
I LOVE YOU!! I wanted to make these for so long but was intimidated by that traditional iron pan! This is so much easier!
the pan wouldn't stay hot for me so it took like half an hour before they got any color on them =(
i ended up closing the lid after they were in ball shape for a minute - turned the balls - closed for a minute - repeat, worked a lot faster =)
oh and don't close it all the way if you do, just let the latch rest propped up so the balls arn't squished by the lid
yeah...not sure what pan you're using, but the CAKE POP PAN has the same shape wells in the LID as it does on the BOTTOM. There's no danger of squishing balls. 🙄
@@April4YHWH that was unnecessarily hostile
also you commented on a 4ish year old comment
I made Takoyaki for a snack at Christmas last year, people were kinda wary of it at first but they loved it when they tasted it.
I make it in a Dutch poffert pan, so they are flat instead of round, doesn't change the taste though ;)
that sounds like a great new holiday treat! mind if i copy your idea? i want to try something new for Christmas!
I make my poffertje in a takoyaki pan 😋
I can never get enough of you Emmy!!! You are so amazing and I adore your vids!!!!!!❤️😀
I've been watching Cooking with Dog for quite a while! Chef and Francis are just awesome! And so are you!
Hi Emmy, I love your recipe videos. Please make more. The way you cook things is so healthy and mesmerizing.
I love this! I will absolutely try out your method/recipe once I have all the materials needed. Thank you so much for this video, and your hair is absolutely gorgeous :) All of your videos I've watched are completely delightful, so thank you so much! Also huge HUGE fan of Chef and Francais ;)
Seaweed flakes are a good topping, great video Emmy!
I found your video through Cook With Dog, and I love the idea of using a cake pop maker as a Takoyaki maker. I subscribed to your page and I hope to see many other helpful videos thank you so much again Emmy
Emmy you are a genius!! I have that same machine and never thought to try and make these. Now I will have to try for sure!!
I have the same shelf in the background! 🤗 Great video!
Just got a cakepop maker at local thrift shop! Aaaaand ordered dashi!
Cannot wait!!!!! Thank you for this video. While I wait for all the official Japanese ingredients, I am going to try some ham and cheese ones (plain batter) with maybe green onion. Thrilled!
I had this idea too originally to use a cake pop maker for takoyaki as well but hadn't tried it myself yet. THANK YOU for making this video! I'm going to have to invest in one of these now so my Japanese cooking repertoire can be all the more complete. Thanks again!
I just picked up a cake maker [and a bag of skewers!] at a craft store the other day and am eagerly waiting to get to my favorite Asian grocery for the ingredients. :) Thanks for the hack, can't wait to try it.
Great idea! Would never have thought of using a cake pop maker! I came here from Cooking with Dog and you are +1 subscriber :)
I needed this, thank you! You're doing an excellent job, congratulations.
oh my that looks good. Stumbled upon this video looking for a cake pop recipe.

I heart your cooking videos! Make more of them
I was waiting for someone to make a video like this !
this looks SOOO good omg!! i knew yours and cooking with dogs video had some connection since their were 2 takoyaki vids in a row on my feed hehe
I am sooooo happy I looked this up before buying a takoyaki maker! I have his exact contraption and I have a friend that came here for a visit from japan years ago and made takoyaki for us and OMG I’m sooo excited! You just got my subscription and like! Thanks again!!! ❤️👍🏻
I love takoyaki and always wondered how to make it without a specific pan.. now I have the solution ! Thank you so much !!
Catching up on all vlogs. I love the idea! I've never tried it. But I absolutely love your cakepop maker!
Cooking with dog brought me here to see Emmy again ! 💋❤
Asiana Alvarez sad that the dog passed...
The thought had crossed my mind a few times to try a cake pop maker for takoyaki but now that I know for sure its time to go and get one! Been looking for a takoyaki pan for a while and none of the Japanese shops around seem to have one. Thanks for testing this out!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video! A friend of mine introduced me to takoyaki a few months ago and I fell in love! But the problem was that I can't handle seafood very well and I couldn't find a place where they made a vegetarian version. But now with this life hack I can make my own!! I'm super excited to try this out- thanks for sharing your brilliance!
I'm so happy that you're friends with Coooking with Dog, they are so adorable and make great recipes. Also, your hair looks fantastic
Oh my god what a great idea!!! I just need to buy this machine... AND FINALLY!!! My precious octopus baby balls! What a wonderful recipe! Thank you and to Cooking with dog. 😀😍🌸
Yes!! I missed this one, but when I clicked on the pancake ball video, I was going to ask you to make takoyaki, and was so happy to see you do this!!
OMG I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO TRY THIS BECAUSE OF THE TAMAGOTCHI DS GAME! I SPENT HOURS MAKING THESE ON MY DS! THANK YOU! DREAM COME TRUE!
Okay, so I've been experimenting with takoyaki for a few years now and, while there really is no substitute for the texture and flavor of fresh octopus tentacle, I've found that quickly broiling squid with an Iwatani torch before dicing it up really gives it a rich, smokey flavor that definitely adds character to the dish (yay, Maillard Reaction!). Just a thought. Anyway, you've earned another subscriber here. For some reason, your personality reminds me a bit of Pailin's Hot Thai Kitchen show also here on RUclips and that's awesome 😁
Ever since I have gotten that cake pop maker, I have thought about using it for takoyaki. Thanks Emmy!
I love it when they put that peanut powder I guess. it just taste really good with some veggies inside. But yeah you really made it look so easy! I've been watching your videos since early in the morning until this hour (2:58pm PH time).
wow thank you so much...I have been in love with takoyaki since the first time I had a chance to try it in a small japanese restaurant in Paris and always want to make it by myself but I couldnt find any machine or pan for making takoyaki. Luckily I found mini cupcakes maker ( same like babycake ) yesterday and it was the last one in Slovakia, I bought it with the hope that I will be able to make takoyaki and now I have suddenly found your chanel and this video...arigatoooo 😍😍
The original recipe! Thank You!
Thank you for your charming video. I will make this for sure!
Lovely video! I understand Francis now!! Brilliant!
I feel so unwell and you made me smile! I love the music at the start :)
Takoyaki's readily available in the philippines too but mostly at small food stalls you can find in the mall. There's cheapass Takoyaki for about .25c US which really isn't much to write home about but there are some excellent places with huge tako pieces and properly made Takoyaki that costs about $2. My personal favorite place is somewhere called TamaYaki which serves (apart from takoyaki with tako), mussels and cheese, ham and cheese, crab... and you can pair it with a flavored iced/milk tea. Of course, nothing beats traditional tako filling.
Dear person reading this
Sometimes the things that you are the most afraid of
are the things that make you the happiest!
You were born to stand out and shine,
and you will inspire others to do great things!
You can live your dream!
Everybody who has ever been great had barriers to overcome,
and you can do it to! When you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change

Wow... I needed this so badly it made me cry (and believe me, I almost never cry) Thank you so much for this
Thanks!
Thank you🌹
Hugs!
that is brilliant. I have been looking for ages for a proper Takoyaki pan but was unable to find any. This machine however is easily available :) thanks a lot for this
You are a life saver!! Hope I get a cake pop maker for Xmas!
Thank you so much for this video, I always wondered if I could make these with a cake pop maker or not, thanks for showing it!
I've always wondered if this was possible! This is just in time, I know what I'm asking for for Christmas this year.
This was a fantastic video. I had these at a farmers market and they were insanely delicious. I was wondering could I use a cake pop maker and you proved I could also I wondered what it would be to change to shrimp. You proved it. I will be moving fast ahead on this. Thanks so much.
Ever since you did this I wanted to try Takyoyaki but didn't have any way to cook it. Imagine my happiness when I went to my favorite Japanese restaurant in town, and it turned out they always had served it! It was so delicious, thanks Emmy for making me try it!
I bought a cake pop maker long ago thinking maybe this was possible!! Thank you, Emmy!! :DDD
That looks delicious!!!! For sure i will try this... Thank you for recipe :)
Takoyaki is my love. And I miss you so much Emmy 😭I used to watch you 24/7 in 2011
I love TakoYaki w/Sriracha. excellent channel- SUBSCRIBED
Takoyaki looks so fun to make! You and Cooking With Dog are pros haha, I can't imagine mine would look so uniform by the end!
I was seriously considering buying one of these things for Takoyaki, before I even heard of this video. I'm glad it is official and can really be done! Sadly, the only real Takoyaki I had was at a Ramen shop in Calgary, Alberta. It was very 'authentic' for me, and came with the Okonomiyaki sauce and the Japanese Kewpie mayo, but it also had the deep fried tempura drops added to it which really made it stand out. Yummy!
I'm very happy to find this video! (thanks to cooking with dog). I have recently been wanting to try my hand at takoyaki and just yesterday had the epiphany that cake pop machines would likely be a perfect substitute for a takoyaki pan as they are the same shape and general size! Now it's confirmed to be true. Will definitely give this video another look when I finally get to make some~
Thank you for posting this video =D
What a great idea, using the babycakes maker! You could make aebleskivvers (danish pancake balls) in there too!
Thank you so much! I wanted a cake pop maker just for takoyaki but I was not sure about it, now there is no doubt! I can finally make them at home and my BF will finally try them!
Yes! Thank you Emmy!! Me and my japanese friend did this before with the babycakes machine, but it was a total mess! You made it seem so much easier (:
I'm thrilled that takoyaki can be made with a cake pop pan. I came to your channel from Cooking With Dog. I love takoyaki with Worchestire sauce. *yum*
It worked GREAT, just one little thing I did different. After I had the ball shape, I closed the lid, got a great golden brown finish
You and Chef popped up together in my in box. Fun videos.
Oh hmmm I have always wanted to try this . I’ll have to do the cake pop and shrimp version.
That looks delicious with the shrimp!
I have tasted Takoyaki about 3 years ago when I was in japan, and I miss it! It tastes amazing, I miss japan since I was born there but I do have a cake pop maker and I will be making this! Thanks :)
Already in love :). Subscribed.
Ah thanks you saved my life! When I saw them I was like oh yes yumm! But when you said octopus my heart skipped a beat! I am going to make these with cheese now!
Nicely done! looks so good!
OMG THANKS!!! I was using a Takoyaki pan till now on my stove and it is hell to make Takoyaki with this.. i so will try it out with our cakepop maker this wekk! Thank you very much!
wow I have always wanted to try takoyaki but I never had the tools to. Thanks for sharing this brilliant idea!!
I've first read of "takoyaki" in a Japanese-made interactive novel. From what I've found online and seen in your vid, I WANT THEM.
I had takoyaki for the first time three weeks ago in Tokyo. And now I want to make it at home. Thanks for the video. I love your channel.
This really helped me out thanks alot.
WOO! Thank you! I've been really wanting to try it. I went to little tokyo and wanted to try it, but the one they made was literally all just octopus. I can finally make it, it's awesome to because my mom was gifted a babycakes machine :D
Ha - I've loved both your channel and CWD's for a long time now. It's fun seeing you both in the same place :P
Emmy you are genius!!!
Thank you so much for this I've seen the babycakes cake pop maker and wondered if it would work for okonomiyaki but didnt want to spend the money just in case it didnt work so thanks!
Cooking With Dog technically brought me here, but I love both of your videos. I love how you two collaborate for things like this, it's really neat. ^^
They turned out great! I would like having one of those cake pop maker.
Oh yum!!!!! Thankyou thankyou! I love cooking with dog! My son who is 3 calls the channel "cooking with woowoo". Can't wait to try these!
This is awesome. I bought one about two years ago and tried making donut holes once. I did not like it.
But this I am so going to try. MMmmmmm the savory flavors...Yum Yum Yum.
Takes me back to my two years in Okinawa!
I am subscribed to both you and Cooking with Dog, but didn't know you would crossover and squee'd when I saw you pop up on their Takoyaki and Ebiyaki video! Can't wait to 'hack' my cake pop maker to make takoyaki. :D
I love takoyaki. There is a Japanese festival in my city and I always get it! I might even buy a cake pop maker now. Great hack.
Oh! Can I ask where? I live near L.A....it wouldnt be Little Tokyo would it??
Thank you so much for this video! I've been wondering if it was possible to use a cake pop to cook takoyaki and I'm glad I found this!
I agree with Francis... were I not a canid, I would totally ask you out. ;)
I finally found a place in Orlando outside of Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs that makes takoyaki so I can usually get my fix without having to do a lot of the work, but I love your method and it might just cause me to try my hand at making them at home.
Another option for takoyaki pans are just the plain old cake pop pans, preferably the solid iron ones. They hold in heat a lot better. Amazon usually carries a decent selection.
So I've had a babycakes maker for AGES, but I don't eat a lot of cake. On the other hand, I love takoyaki and can't find it easily here! Thank you for this - my babycakes maker will finally see some use!
Life saver....thank you soooo much
