- RICE SANDWICH ONIGIRAZU RECIPE - おにぎらずレシピ - COOKING WITH CHEF DAI
Onigirazu rice sandwiches are a fast, convenient snack that you can eat without getting your hands messy. They're a modern take on the traditional and extremely popular "onigiri" rice ball. A traditional onigiri is a triangular shaped mould of white rice wrapped in nori seaweed with fillings such as pickled plum, tuna mayo, salted salmon or anything else you may wish to put inside.
Onigirazu are different as the rice is not pressed as much as it is in an onigirazu rice ball. They are also cut into half so that the filling is visible from the outside.
Chef Dai makes 5 onigirazu, each with a different filling. Please feel free to substitute or create your own unique filling!

My mom used to make this when I was in school. I didn't know it's called onigirazu these days. Now I miss her food. :) Thank you chef Dai for another great video!
BTW, are you still making videos from your restaurant?
Hi Jun, always a pleasure. I know what you mean friend....nothing beats Mum's food from childhood, does it? Nostalgia is such a strong emotion. Your comment reminds me of an apology I made to my own Mother recently. When I was a little boy (a long long time ago), I sometimes showed my disappointment when she would prepare some of the dishes that I didn't used to like very much like most mushroom dishes, sunomono etc. But they the dishes that I love and appreciate now as an adult and miss the most. I really appreciate my Mother working so hard and preparing all of those great dishes that we were lucky enough to eat as children.......
Hey Jun! :D
+Cooking with Chef Dai awesome matey just made these for the famz...
lol hi Jun! ironic how i shared your cooking videos with my mom. ok not SO ironic. anyway bye!
Chef Dai, I shared your thoughts.
I am so sorry, my mom........
This is such a quick and easy, portable, lunch idea! I love that I can have a sandwich without the bread! I watched the video that you made with "Eat Your Sushi" and really enjoyed it. I don't eat meat or dairy, so really was inspired by the vegetarian version of onigirazu. Please continue to include vegetarian / vegan versions of your dishes when you can. I know I'm not the only one out here that would appreciate them. Thanks!
Nemodog hey! I don't think they're the same person 😰😅
You are absolutely right notiestgirl. It's funny because I visited Chef Togashi's website just the other day and was disappointed that he didn't have a RUclips channel. I made the association with the food item and not the individual. I guess this has become a popular concept and is making the video rounds. Chef Togashi makes a very nice vegetarian version of onigirazo that was posted by Simon and Martina on their Eat Your Sushi channel. It's a great idea and I am inspired by both chefs. Thank you for setting the record straight. :) My apologies to Chef Dai for the mixup and my thanks for the excellent demonstration. I look forward to viewing more of your recipes.
notiestgirl z
Nemodog thank you I agree

I'm 100% sure that you are a Lost Pause subscriber! 😂
Only a pokémon fan will get it
@@fadedpegasush7764
We allllll get it, and we're allllll sick of it.
This gave me an idea to have fast meal beacuse I can prepare it early and when i get hungry i can just get my prepared food from fridge.
Do prepare overnight? How u keep it? Rice will hard?
@@kslim7481 If you wrap the onigirazu with a kitchen towel, the rice inside will stay soft.
@@kslim7481 Don't put it in the fridge overnight, the rice will get hard. If you make it further in advance you can freeze them (just make sure to cook the rice with a small amount of oil, as that will help encase the moisture)
You can put in the fridge night over. Just add some sesame oil to the rice. It will keep the rice nice :)
In the "old days," fishermen referred to the white albacore tuna as "chicken of the sea." It was called this because the white color and very mild flavor reminded them of chicken.
Luna Otimas is that where the name of the brand comes from ? I like the brand that has the big blue tuna on it, there spicy tuna in the pouches is my favorite for fux sushi.
yes
oh! thank you
Yup. I have heard this also.
"Ask any mermaid you happen to see, "What's the best Tuna?", CHICKEN OF THE SEA!!"
To explain the name, "onigiri" is usually just written in kana as おにぎり, but it comes from 御握り, where 御 ("o") is an honorific, and 握り ("nigiri") means "grasping", as you would grasp a rice ball to form it when making it. The name of this is onigirazu, where the difference is in 握らず ("nigirazu"), which instead means "without grasping", as we can see you don't grasp it!
I'm definitely trying this tonight :3 Thank you for this great recipe!
Thank you for your kind comment. I like your channel btw, very interesting indeed......
I love the way he speaks. Very soothing and clear at the same time. And the video is so easy to follow
This is a brilliant alternative to sandwiches for lunch. Love me some onigiri!
not really, by lunchtime, your nori sheet will absorb the moisture of the rice and other ingredients and will become chewy even not possible to bite it off. this is mostly to enjoy it at the moment of preparation
@@ndlkdan6213the moisture in the rice is what keeps the nori from breaking apart. These are good for days if kept properly sealed and stored in the fridge.
That california one, looks so elegant and good.
thank you Twiggy! I'm glad you liked it.....I enjoyed eating it for the video....
Cute t-shirt tho
lol, thanks. I bought it in Japan.

Looks like a great lunch idea for brown bagging.
Thank you, Chef Dai! Wonderfully executed, clear instructions, & beautiful as well. I was pleasantly surprised that you tried a bite of each one & gave your critique.

I love how much you are enjoying your rice sandwiches
Amazing flavors combination
Wow that looks so great I'm gonna try this😆
California rolls here in Brazil usually are made from imitation crabstick, cucumber and mango.
Is a very interesting mix too, give it a shot!
Rogerio That is a delicious mix!
Rogerio, that sounds delicious, actually.
Mine dont have any meat at all in Boston
My local sushi restaurant (US based) uses mango in some of their rolls. It's a great flavor addition.
Wild. That sounds so good, though. I just wish I liked imitation crab.
simply mouth watering !!!
Fusion at its finest
the tuna one can get my number
Joy Joy 😂😂😂
Thank you for showing how simple this is to make - definitely adding this to my lunch options as it's a great gluten free option - I get to swap bread for rice!
All of these looked delicious
absolutely love your videos!!
I didn't have any of these ingredients, so I improvised. I had the rice, but I used calamari, spicy mayo with some lettuce and turned it into a burrito. It was pretty good.
works beste with Sushi or Risotto Rice
Oh, Lord. I don't suppose you're looking to hire a taster, are you?
Yeah, me too!!
My fav coment on yt
Lolol
This comment is terribly relatable. I regret to inform you that the competition for this is very high 🤣
Great ideas, chef. They all look delicious. Thank you.
Love this idea! Thanks for the video!
Now I'm going to have to try this!! Gosh I'm so hungry and it looks so delicious
I'm going to make this, bring this to school and make everyone jealous. I'm going to use tuna. I'm sure tuna can stay unspoiled in the fridge for 3 days (without having to microwave)
I LOVE THIS.
VERY cool video!!! Definitely a different type of sandwich for me! Will try to make this for sure!! Thanks for posting!!!
This man just stole my heart. I love sushi and to have them as big as sandwiches is genius.
Tuna was originally called "chicken of the sea" because of its white coloring and mild flavor, just like chicken.
These look delicious! My husband and I make one similar to this only with seasoned beef crumbles and hosin sauce.
Yes, please!
They all look delicious.
This is the best video explaining the wrapping process, thank you.
That California roll-inspired onigirazu looks fantastic. I'm going to have to try my hand at it.
thanks, please do try it, was really delicious!!!
@@CookingwithChefDai Chef, do you season the rice with the rice vinegar or is it plain white rice?
That Shougeki no Shouma picture at the end 😂❤️
This looks amazing

This is such a good idea
thank you!
Приятного аппетита.🍙
So easy to make and delicious looking, thank you for sharing.
I love this food.thank you for making the video
"Chicken of the Sea" was probably taken from Starkist Tuna marketing. During WW2 and after the name of the product was "Chicken of the Sea. So more than likely they were in food drops made as humanitarian aid, then after the war this product was dominate in the industry. Canned foods were some of the first trade products after the war. Just a theory.
i'm hungry now.
Chief Dai, I LOVE not only your tasty recipes but most of all your esthetic- beautiful presentations. Thank you for the inspiration, master.
Definitely making these
This is the most badass way to enjoy leftovers. Now all my co workers are jelly.

They look great! trying out some this weekend.
沢山具を入れてもうまく包めるものですね。久しぶりに作ってみようかなあ。
This would be perfect for me cuz I can't eat wheat.
My husband to has a farty party problem
I don’t rlly like bread so this is perfect
Canned tuna is usually called chicken of the sea. There is even a brand that uses that as their slogan.
And bats are called chicken of the cave :-D
+ThurstanTV lol
And humans are called "chicken of last hope (and cannibals)"
I really needed this recipe in my life! Thanks so much for sharing it!
Just literally five seconds and I'm already in love
Why am i watching this at 3am.....I'm hungry
I really want to eat the ones left on his plate 😂😂😂😂
Muchas grasias, por compartir tus Rivas resetas, adoro la comida asiatica
This is awesome. Gonna try making some.
There are a few reasons as to why it was called "Chicken of the Sea" but if I remember correctly In the "old days", fishermen referred to the "white albacore tuna" as “Chicken of the Sea” because of the white colour and very mild flavor reminded them of chicken.
I’m a Latina American, so our food isn’t really “healthy”. Lately, I have been wanting to expand our menu with more veggies and less carbs. I’m very excited to try the tuna cucumber sandwich you made. Looks delicious! Hope to pack one in my husband’s lunch to see what he thinks!
By the way, do you have any bento box ideas?
These look so delicious! I loved watching you make all of them. You shirt was pretty awesome, too. Thanks for sharing this video.
I loooved this video.. .thank you sooo much
I really liek that background music. The guitar reminds me of the ending theme for Shinsekai Yori
Hello Dipper! ^_^!
I like your shirt
this looks so good.
THANK YOU! So helpful. Can’t wait to try!👏🏻
Tuna is referred to as the Chicken of the Sea in America as well. LOL
thank you......
Thats so strange.
There was also a pretty popular clip of Jessica Simpson on her reality TV show (early 2000s) when she legitimately thought that tuna was chicken.
J-Horse hey hope
To add onto what Shavonne TV said, tuna started being called "chicken of the sea" because in the US there is a seafood packaging company called Chicken of the Sea. So it kind of caught on like calling facial tissues "Kleenex" and adhesive medical strips "Band-Aids". The brand becoming so popular that the name applies to the product instead of the real name for it.
I live in Japan and I just heard from a guy who works for Hagoromo, a canned tuna company on TV. When canned tuna was new to the market in Japan some decades ago, the guy said, the company wanted to introduce it as something similar in taste to chicken. Chicken of the sea. That's how they named canned tuna, Sea Chicken. But then, I remember USA had canned tune called Sea Chicken more than 30 years ago, if I remember correctly.
taromi Chicken of the Sea has been around over 100 years, actually, and is one of the most popular canned tuna brands.
I used to live in the States when I was small. I thought the brand was Sea Chicken. Now I know it's Chicken of the Sea. Thnx for the info.
great answer. it is also because if you have shredded chicken with mayo just like the tuna mayo in this video, it is almost hard to tell the difference.
Amazing & quick recipes! Definitely gonna try it.
Love this
Lovely! I'll be making this everyday for my lunch at work, quick to prepare and I can add varieties. Could you show us how to make the prawn? Thank you :)
i will definitely try and make a video on how to make ebi furai soon.......
please do make them for lunch, hope you enjoy them!!!!
thanks friend...
I should do some kind of sushi with avocado tomorrow...
Those look amazing !!!!!!!
Yummers...will definitely do this for my bento.
words can't describe how much i want those Ö.Ö
Lmao, love how you put food wars as your ending background
congratulations!!!!! are amazing !!!! thank you
Wow! I'm just discovering your videos. I love how you give your instructions, your camera work and editing. Very clear and easy to understand!
I've actually never seen flying fish roe in a California roll - it typically includes imitation crabstick, avocado and cucumber.
same. I usually see it with cream cheese, and not mayo, too. The thought of mayo in it is actually grossing me out a bit haha
I've had it with the tobiko sprinkled on the outside of the roll, along with sesame seeds. It's actually really good with the roe, adds some saltiness.
Ibsen
I can imagine that would be a nice hint of saltiness!
Some restaurants in Oklahoma have tofu in their's.
Churumbelita I've actually never seen a California roll without fish roe.
From Chicken of the Sea company
In the "old days", fishermen referred to the white albacore tuna as “Chicken of the Sea.” It was called this because the white color and very mild flavor reminded them of chicken. The founder of the company thought this would be a unique name for a brand of tuna, and the Chicken of the Sea brand is now known worldwide.
lol, thank you so much.
I've never heard of that brand before.
now it makes perfect sense to me.........
I can't wait to try some of these... they look amazing... thank you for posting such a great video...
