The Hummer does its job very well. Its not a death trap. Remember, this is war. I've been there. This is no tank. Its probably the best designed multi-use platform ever for our military.
I own one, drive it regularly on road and off road. Gets similar mileage to my old full size pick-up, around 16 to 18 depending how you drive it. Its by far the most enjoyable vehicle I have owned. I have owned all of the series trucks, and a Classic, this doesn't show its width off road, but hey I go four wheeling in the Pacific Northwest where the trails have been cleared by Jeeps. :-) Anybody who thinks there is one vehicle to do everything the best is wrong, there will always be a compromise to achieve certain goals. Unless you have owned and worked on one of these pigs your input is hardly valid to me.
There are things that H1's can do that the Wrangler/Jeeps can not, that's why it was designed to replace the Jeep for the Military, and overall it's done well-enough at exactly that because of where we've been fighting (likely something the CIA/intelligence at the time of design made a top priority just like the Jeep was designed around a time of fighting in Europe and the S.Pacific jungles) and they're not exactly driving Hummers around close among the infantry when they're crawling through the forest fighting eye to eye. it as just never designed to do this and that;s FINE, but trying to say that it's all things to all 4wd's that's silly. It was never neat to be a "crawler" or a trail rig, it was meant to be a general/multi-purpose, up-armorable troop carrier, patrol truck and Emergency Medical vehicle for the military and that shows on super technical trails. Will they go farther then a stock, typical 4wd SUV of modern origin??? Absolutely, they;re not sitting ducks, but they won;t go everywhere a solid-axle Toyota, Suzuki or Jeep will and that's proven. Lots of trucks can be made to work (with varying degrees of body damage incurred) on 2/3rds of the trails we run, hell the 5th Gen 4Runner made it through the Rubicon with some serious rock rash (and I've personally seen 2 H1's do it too), but it''s that last 1/3rd that is where other trucks surpass the H1. I also don't have to own one to have spent HOURS extracting them from tight trails in the PNW when they've gotten in over their heads (and likely the drivers comfort with possible damage to an expensive truck that's not cheap to find body-panels for) And if you're from the PNW you might be familiar with a fairly infamous story about an equally infamous Portland Based H1 that got STUCK in a very well know trail in the TSF that goes THROUGH a tree-stump and under a few massive pieces of wood (Toyota and ARB have used this section of trail in a number of their advertisements over the last 10 years). I was there (same truck we spent hours winching out of "Little Rubicon" after it went sideways) and it just highlighted how quickly things can go wrong and how precise you have to be to both in spotting and driving to get bigger trucks through tight obstacles. Yes H1's can follow smaller trucks down a good number of trails trails, so can FS domestic trucks and any number of modern IFS "trucks" and SUV's, But saying that a truck with 2-3x the width and double the wheel-base doesn't "show it's size" at some point is physically impossible. I'll also admit FREELY that to make my Toyotas more capable off-road I've lost road capability that the Stock H1 has more of with less over-all compromise off-road, but my Toyotas still capable of that last 1/3rd of off-road difficulty that's the biggest hurdle to most trucks, the H1 included.
It was even marketed to them! Big plastic piece of crap, too. When gas prices spiked in the late 2000's, they all disappeared in a month in California.
It was a unique combination of GM 1500 and 2500 truck frames. So an extra beefy half-brother to a 2000s Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon. Although "softer" than a Humvee it was hardly a FWD Chevy Traverse.
Shane Richardson I saw that. You would of had issues if 2 minis were passing each other on that street, let alone a Hummer H1. Somebody would be jumping the curb.
@@Nyctophiliac. Yes. As I said, they just translated the name to English. As far as I could tell, the translation was entirely correct. Our Lord, Sports a Nigga.
The appreciation and inherent social cache for a car of this name is so ingrained in the American psyche, when I told my grandparents that I got a job working at a computer company, they were mildly impressed, but what got them very impressed, wasn’t the companies we were working with, wasn’t how much money the company was bringing in, it was when I told them my boss owned a hummer H2.
@@asbestosfibers1325 ya, screw my dead grand parents, or “stupid partents” as you so eloquently put it, for being elderly and impressed by a truck that was for most of their lives only available to the us government. How dare those people who grew up with dirt floors during the Great Depression era find a massive and expensive car impressive.
Say what you will... the thing I was most impressed by (if it's actually true) is that the wheel-width was designed to fit those of tanks. I just think that is clever as Hell.
It is, and the 16 inchs of ground clearance was achieved by using portal axles, which meant the driveshaft was moved much higher and sits in between the passenger seats, which is why the inside seating arrangement is so weird and spaced out
i live in the southeast US. and there are alot of people that use trucks in this area for different reasons. one of the most common uses is mud bogging. others use them for hauling stuff, and sometimes you can use the extra bed space to haul stuff. and a pickup is very practical for a family vehicle. because you know someone that is going to want to use it. they dont cause any traffic. and they are pretty easy to park. but these are the common uses where i live besides work reasons
Ah, the classic Top Gear/Grand Tour "let's drive a large vehicle on a narrow street, it'll be ironic" gag. They've got a lot of mileage out of that one.
The original Hummer is actually much smaller than the current average American full size crew cab pickup now. The only areas that it is bigger are in overall width, off-road capability, durability, and the amount of diesel guzzled. The H1 has a 130" wheelbase, 185" overall length, 87" width, and stands between 75-79" tall, depending on the year and body style. My 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab has a 140" wheelbase, 228" overall length, 79.5" width, and stands 75" tall. And that isn't even the biggest of the full size American pickups! The Ram 3500 Mega Cab rides on a 161" wheelbase, is 248" long, 96" wide, and 74-78" tall depending on drivetrain! I believe they even offer a long bed version of this truck now, so add in another 18" of length if that's the case. Even my 2014 Dodge Challenger is over a foot longer! 13" longer, to be exact! However, my Ram can seat 6 in comfort, and has a nice big cargo bed. It's also got all of the creature comforts and conveniences of a luxury sedan, and manages to get 23MPG on the highway with ease. It's essentially a luxury car with a pickup bed on the back... Cowboy Cadillac!
This is, truly, the most American vehicle in the world. A bunch of people will cry out "Mustang!" and "Corvette!" and a bunch of other stuff like that, but they are wrong. This is it. A purpose built military vehicle, infamous for it's off road capabilities, converted to civilian use by adding a radio and some decorations. That's why we love it. But it is a truly terrible vehicle for road use. Take it off road, and there's not much else I'd want, but even on American roads this thing is a nightmare in every way except Cool Factor. Well, Cool Factor as well as Awesome Factor and Big Factor, but in every other way it's terrible.
RandomTXDude210 the reasons you give for the Hummer being the most American vehicle you're really saying that the Jeep is the most American vehicle because it was originally a military vehicle then became a civilian and then mass produced and more famous and popular than the H1 Hummer.

I think the most american car would be the first gen stang cuz it was a budget worker family car and it furthered the pony car, the mustang would be seen with all types of people and when you usually say pony car, it associates itself with big manly man cars or overly sexy women, but not the first stangs they were made for everyone
I don't give a crap what any of you say. When I lived in West Virginia I saw some amazing things done by the Army National Guard in emergency situations with H1's. Had it not been for those trucks, a few homes would have been lost in a flood, and dozens of people would have starved during a blizzard. I watched one pull a 70'x12' trailer against the current of a raging river that flooded it's banks, and up a 40 degree muddy hill to safety with the people still inside. Also, a narrow valley was cut off from a blizzard because down there they don't have snow equipment to move the snow. A couple H1's packed with food and water were able to climb and push their way through the 4' deep snow drifts to bring supplies to the stranded people up the gully. So talk crap all you want about how it's a waste of resources, or impractical, or "so american"... fine. I'll claim the "so American" any day, when it's the only vehicle that could have saved those lives. Your Range Rovers, Wranglers, and whatever else you're bragging about would have just sat there and watched. I'd love to own one someday if I ever got the money for it.
The military version overheats and steam shoots out of the radiator if the speedometer goes anywhere north of 40mph. Then your unit's leadership in their infinite wisdom take 7 or 8 hours to recover the vehicle. I've seen it happen on the I-8 freeway going from San Diego to Yuma more times than I care to think about.
I remember when stretched Hummer limousines, generally in a shade of stark yellow or pink, were all the rage. Any Friday or Saturday night at my local high street you'd find three, circa 2008-2012. How bloody awful.
I used to work next door to a place that ran this stretched Hummer i.gyazo.com/4d70947688e40d5c12def1f3c1e975aa.png Saw it one day at the petrol station, taking up two consecutive pumps!
It's because they are former Ox-cart trails! When the "Horse-less carriage" was developed they figured they would just run them on these same trails. Too bad over time these trails became deep mud pits when some German thought up the idea "Hey lets make these 'trails' more durable!" Taking an idea from the Romans, they made these trails actual hard, durable, stone "roads". Too bad the idea didn't catch on in the English "countryside"......they still had these giant, deep, rutted mud-pits for decades after the "cities" were well paved.
Im sorry but that's not true. You probably haven't even been all around Europe. Maybe if you're from the states, but hey, in comparison, we complain about our bellyfat, you die from it
Jeppe Løger I think you're the one that hasn't been around Europe much mate. Go to Paris, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Etc. and you'll find plenty of these narrow one lane roads.....because those cities were built before the motorcar, narrow streets are common.
Nonsense. I drove a GMC pick-up for a couple of years with the same TD engine & it gave great MPG, more importantly it gave great value for money. You have power, smooth torque & speed. What do you get from your 1.0 or 1.3 engine ??? Nothing but misery. They’re only wasting money because they’re weak, miserable & uncomfortable.
It's ironic to see this clip from a couple decades back, where the good european folks are all laughing at the giant impractical American car, and compare it with today, when SUV sales are exploding in Europe.
I've been daily driving my H1 for three years now. I absolutely love it and will own an H1 till the day I die. I love reading all the comments online about the vehicle..... very few are made by people who have a clue what they are talking about, but it does make for some entertaining reading. The H1 is not for everyone, it just happens to be for me. If you have always been wanting one but have been scared away by all the trash talk on the internet just go buy one, you will love it.
+wakonda1 Yes but not if you live in the UK. It is a terrible car for UK roads, and this is a UK show. It is excellent as a military vehicle, or for off-roading, or for cruising about feeling like you own the road. But for everything else, it is a bit... Full of compromises shall we say? It is very much a car that you should only buy if you really just *want* one. I don't think anybody in the world *needs* one.
Acme i do believe any american who buys this knows they dont need it. and probably has a second car... like a geo metro.... or i would at least. so people wouldnt accuse you of compensating LOL
Alfriston is hard enough to get though in any car - thats why people are good natured. We are used to this problem. Go though very often and live near by.
This definitely should have just stayed a military vehicle. It's just way too expensive. But offroading in one of these is exciting as hell as you'll go places you'd never think you'd be able to go.
Asofe17 Lol, ever actually seen a humvee like a M998 actually pushed hard off road? A lada will beat a H2 or H3 civilian hummer, but not a true humvee. I have seen first hand the stuff a humvee will just laugh at and go through, up, down across ext. I have seen modified jeep's not be able to get through stuff a m998 can.
They're crap off-road and on. And yes, I've driven a LOT of them. You want exciting off-road, get in a Unimog a Gwagen or a Toyota 4wd. There are LOTS of places Hummers will not go that those three WILL. I've been a 4wd operator on 3 continents and it's all Toyotas, Mercedes, Nissan and a few Rovers... for good reason.
I have driven both soft skin hmmwv's and up armor's, hundreds of them, they will go threw about anything within reason. I have also run Unimog's, decent off road (way to top heavy though) problem is they are piles of crap and working on them is a nightmare.
nmdiesel89 Anything that uses brake actuated LSD's/4w-IFS over Solid Portal-axles and full mech. lockers is inferior off road in my fairly broad experience. Hummers are ponderous off-road with that width not being just axle width, but body width too. Not good off-road, esp. since I live/wheel in the Pacific NW where Hummers simply don't work without a saw-crew to help you clear out the trees. I've run both 416 Mogs (...in reality the engineering is so far beyond the HMMV even being a MUCH older truck it's hilarious, but that's true of the Mill G-Wagens too) and 70-series Toyota Landcruiser Utes (aka the thing I miss most about living in OZ all those years) as Wildland Fire Engines/Bush Expo rigs (here and in Australia) and both of those platforms have gone places where no H1 would ever have made it... loaded with thousands of pounds of water and CAFS gear. The Nat. Guard units couldn't get into the areas to survey where we'd just been to spray/fight fire with a 416 Mog so, to me, that pretty much said it all. I've yet to see a Hummer going someplace you couldn't take a Unimog or even an older Toyota on say wider 80-series axles. You want to see a well built H1... go look up the "Toyota Mega Cruiser" Much like they did with the Willys/40-series Landcruiser, Toyota took a LOT of design cues from the Hummer only it was made by Toyota so it's built smart and in a quality way.
I remember seeing a local news clip (this was in the Seattle area) back in 1995 about a college girl who drove one of these which was new at the time. And she usually drove barefoot! And spent most of her time barefoot when not driving too!
First of all, the MPG is not that bad, I own one and it doesn't get that bad of MPG. It doesn't get any worse than say a Chevy Duramax or a Ford Powerstroke from the same era. Now the Duramax was a guzzler but the Detroit Diesel isn't that bad. Yes its too big for Britain but in America its great because we have big american roads!
+ARGM it's not much cheaper (lol)...still about 1$ per litre (converting to pounds sterling it's about .76p) I think it about 1.45 in the midlands last I was told...
+ywe3 Well when we went we worked out to fill our cars tank would cost about $19, would cost alot more over here in britain, we get ours taxed alot whereas the fuel in america isnt taxed nearly as much if not at all :P
At 110.9 pence per litre (my car has 70 litre fuel tank) it would cost me £77.63 to fill up, which equates to $115.05USD. It is generally cheaper in the middle of nowhere because it is in the middle of nowhere, which doesn't really make sense, but hey ho... In higher population centres the cost of fuel skyrockets. That was a month ago. Now at 102.9ppl, it's still high @ £72.03 = $106.76USD
The reality is that most trucks today are actually bigger than the H1. It was big when they first came out, but most trucks and a few cars are bigger today.
The hummer is a practicality car, like a base model f-150 its not meant for style, its meant for work. you can haul heavy loads with it, its good for off road, and its a pretty durable vehicle. the military counterpart isn't meant for style and street cred it was a utility vehicle and that is the premise of a hummer. Whether it was intentional or not, idk.
would love to see one up against a Range Rover. I'm really surprised every time I see one in my area and then see one on Top Gear. The stuff that thing can do (right up their with the H1) while offering such luxury (ehhh...H1, not so much) is crazy. I could only imagine a RR HSE Sport with a minor lift and some serious rubber for off-roading under it. Season 19 they put one up against a 6-wheeled US Military Drone vehicle. Awesome segment to say the least.
Yes, that's what everybody outside the US would think. But meanwhile the three best selling cars in the US (Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Chevrolet Silverado) have nearly identical dimensions compared to the H1. Many of the models are even longer and higher.
leporello7 yeah. They were considered big for their time but now, they’re about normal. The current mid-size Colorado is actually the same size as an early 70s C10 full-size truck. Even my father’s 04 f250 super duty looks a bit small next to the current f150. My 98 Wrangler looks like a 7/8 scale model next to the current Wrangler.
The HMMWVs we used were still a lot better riding and quieter than the older CUCVs (1977 GMC diesel picku), which all sounded like a garbage disposal full of rock at 65 and wouldn'tdo 67 mph.
The 1st H1 my neighbor bought was gasoline. All he did was put gas in it. Then he bought a diesel. Too slow. Then he bought a turbo diesel. No matter your speed, 13.5 mpg. (US) What a piece. $3500 to have the heater core replaced. $600/tire. If you stopped to quickly, the rotors would warp. Junque, junque, junque.

H2 better than the H1...LOL the H2 is a glorified soccer mom car.
It was even marketed to them! Big plastic piece of crap, too. When gas prices spiked in the late 2000's, they all disappeared in a month in California.
lol I think they all disappeared in general.
The hummer is civilian version of the humvee, the h2 is what happens when you let corporate shmucks dictate vehicle design.
@@Oldbmwr100rs Limp wristed Californians actually bought em?
It was a unique combination of GM 1500 and 2500 truck frames. So an extra beefy half-brother to a 2000s Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon. Although "softer" than a Humvee it was hardly a FWD Chevy Traverse.
If you have two directions of traffic on a one lane street, you'd have too little room for a Fiat.

Big Car Cool.
Simple as.
Say what you will... the thing I was most impressed by (if it's actually true) is that the wheel-width was designed to fit those of tanks. I just think that is clever as Hell.
It is, and the 16 inchs of ground clearance was achieved by using portal axles, which meant the driveshaft was moved much higher and sits in between the passenger seats, which is why the inside seating arrangement is so weird and spaced out
That Arnold Schwarzenegger impression...mhmm gold
so crazy how different this show became over the following years

@skylerelax I would imagine so

Because guys with a BMI of 30 want to feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger!
i live in the southeast US. and there are alot of people that use trucks in this area for different reasons. one of the most common uses is mud bogging. others use them for hauling stuff, and sometimes you can use the extra bed space to haul stuff. and a pickup is very practical for a family vehicle. because you know someone that is going to want to use it.
they dont cause any traffic. and they are pretty easy to park. but these are the common uses where i live besides work reasons
"Oh this is a narrow street and somebody's parked in it," 😂😂😂😂😂😂
How the hell are those streets not One Way? My God, the Brits are so quaint. And I don't really mean that in a nice way. :)
@downundanow5569 well, the streets were not designed for the use of the car, let's put it that way, lol
In the US that would qualify as a pedestrian walkway
I remember this being in widescreen when shown on BBC 2.
note to self: do not buy a hummer h1 if you live in england
because narrow roads? as seen in the video
because its mpg's are so bad they're in the negatives.
you do realize negative mpg would mean it creates fuel while it drives, right?
more like travel back in time to undo the miles its already done
I still want one, it looks very comfortable
H1's had dual fuel tanks that could hold 42 gallons total, and I think the last H1 Alphas that were made could hold up to 52 gallons.
actually its gloves, boots and your motorcycle.

Boneychuck No, it's "I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle."
Ah, the classic Top Gear/Grand Tour "let's drive a large vehicle on a narrow street, it'll be ironic" gag. They've got a lot of mileage out of that one.
What im most impressed about this car is how little space there is in the seats
I've never noticed before but Clarkson says after the 'Gelf' war 🤔🤣
+RandomTXDude210 Black Trans Am with T-tops off and Van Halen blarin'

RandomTXDude210 the reasons you give for the Hummer being the most American vehicle you're really saying that the Jeep is the most American vehicle because it was originally a military vehicle then became a civilian and then mass produced and more famous and popular than the H1 Hummer.
I think the most american car would be the first gen stang
cuz it was a budget worker family car and it furthered the pony car, the mustang would be seen with all types of people and when you usually say pony car, it associates itself with big manly man cars or overly sexy women, but not the first stangs they were made for everyone
"most american vehicle in the world"
actually that'd be the M35 Deuce 1/2 sorry.
''Cool factor'' or ''oh look, it's time to bomb another 1 of those dusty countries again yeehaarrrrrrghh!!!1'' factor??!
This may be the one vehicle where if Jeremy wears a racing helmet, his head wouldn’t touch the roof.
"I don't give a crap what any of you say" ...followed by a verbose defensive rant ...I think you do! LOL
The H1 looks amazing even in 2016.
That's the first time I saw a Hummer back up for another car.
The OG hummer H1 was just the military model with some civilian after market parts
The thin road problem could be fixed by just driving into the buildings on the sides

I can hardly imagine them being worse but alright, i'll believe you :3
It's because they are former Ox-cart trails!
This is the H1 AM General Sold By GM. The H2 is the Tahoe, one. THE H3 is the Colorado. when they were making them.
I need an oil refinery on my garden to keep this baby running lol
This and the H3 Alpha on my bucket list of cars to own.

It's ironic to see this clip from a couple decades back, where the good european folks are all laughing at the giant impractical American car, and compare it with today, when SUV sales are exploding in Europe.
That village is Alfriston, close to where I live. The roads are indeed very narrow.
+ramairgto72 i think he was being pretty fair... and nice considering his ususal. hes more rude to cadillacs... LOL

I've had apartments with less space.
Our vehicles aren't too big, your roads are too small! Haha
This definitely should have just stayed a military vehicle. It's just way too expensive. But offroading in one of these is exciting as hell as you'll go places you'd never think you'd be able to go.
but its not really great at offroad too, its too heavy and too big, simple lada niva will out-offroad hummer any day.

+macsrule94 And considerably cheaper petrol/diesel! Or gas, for you.
+macsrule94 lmao whats not that bad? Its still shit mpg. Regardless anything under 20 is considered bad now a days.

Whether it was intentional or not, idk.

leporello7 yeah.
