  • Here´s the chords for Gerry Rafferty´s The Right Moment. I´ve not seen anyone teach this online, or write the correct chord structure out, so I thought I´d put it out there for anyone who fancied playing it on guitar. Got a bit of Corona Cabin Fever going on, and just learning and revising lots of tunes I´ve always fancied doing. For Gerry Rafferty fans everywhere.

Thanks John. Gerry Rafferty’s The Right Moment long ranks as one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Always thought it was worthy of another verse - I guess he was waiting for the right moment to come along.

Keith 1810 That may have been his intention - a song about an incomplete life with an incomplete lyric. Hmmm...🤔

That’s my song, that I love and I thought no one else in the world knew it or let alone could play it. Thanks for the chords. I have picked away at it for years and could never get it to sound right. Now I will. Hats off to you sir and I’m happy to share my song with you.

lee taylor Hi Lee, the reason I done this tutorial is to help others learn how to play the song. It has some unusual chord progressions that I know someone may have been trying to figure out without success. It is a true works of beauty. I hope - if need be - that you take heed of the lyrics and use them well in your life. In the middle of these COVID times, it has become clearer that the notion that we may have the chance to do what we need to do to fully live this beautiful gift of life we have been given, at some ´right moment´ in the future, has been smashed. This is a ´wake up to the real´ moment. I’m very happy that you are now able to play the song correctly. It’s for folks like yourself that I made the video. 🙏

Red It’s probably just the Scots accent singing that is similar. Thanks.

@@johnmorrell you have the kind of vocal range and timbre he has a little plus you are trying to sing like him. but of course he is Gerry Rafferty and was and still is very unique.Beside his voice the guy was a musical/lyricist genius There was only one Gerry Rafferty like only on John lenon .

Thanks, Thomas. Gerry Rafferty wrote some incredible songs and The Right Moment has always been one of my long term favourites. I'm also glad you enjoyed the TOTC, it's really handy to have a short version of a 'big' piece when it comes to Yes or Steve Howe tunes. Glad to help.

For beautiful chord structures and melodies very few could come near Genesis especially in consistency imho but there were five of them all brilliant in there own right. Then late 70s came Gerry Rafferty who did it time and time again . This song I only recently discovered after watching a documentary on him .What a find! Right up there with the best ! How did I miss it when it first came out!

Indeed Harald, Genesis were wonderfully consistent - but there were 5 of them working with each other to produce the final product - G Rafferty was consistently turning out intricate and beautiful melodies since his early days as a folk musician on his own. Listen to 'Mary Skeffington` ruclips.net/video/8aaWgpmvx8g/видео.html that could be an early Genesis tune, its not a million miles away from somethings on Nursery Cryme. Especially that intro. I've recently been working with a friend on a version of 'Right down the line' and he's also quite new to Rafferty, but like you is astounded by how complicated his harmonies and melodies are while seeming so smooth and straightforward. I'm glad to hear you've found some new music.

Thank you, John, I agree with everything you say about Gerry, what a songwriter and indeed singer. I've played this to myself for a long time but you've helped improve it here and there, some difficult stretches though, I personally like the very last chord at 003011, but I'm envious, you have a great voice too!

I'm glad to hear it was helpful. It's such a beautiful song. There's no need to be envious. Your voice and your playing are unique to you. We don't sing, play and perform music to judge ourselves, we play it to honour the music coming through us. It will flow much easier when we lose harsh self judgements and comparisons. Enjoy.

Thank you. This is such a beautiful song, and I`m glad to be able to share how its played. My guitar is made by Gurian -they are handmade and quite difficult to find. I belive they were the first guitars made using steel strings with a classical guitar body shape. This guitar was built in 1972, I think. I toured extensively with this guitar, and it is really road worn. I took it to a guitar builder a couple of years ago, and he advised me not to repair anything on it other than basic stuff - frets etc - as it was a ´living diary´of all it has been through with me. I agreed, and have just left it in its workhorse state. Although it does have a newer fishman pickup in it.
