THE THRILL play GIGUE by DEEP PURPLE. JON LORD
Here's a project that got caught up in the complications of Covid and Lockdown. Unfortunately, we only ever managed the one gig before the covid uncertainty caused it all to fall apart. Nevertheless, it was fun while it lasted. This is a clip from a rehearsal of a Deep Purple tune, ' Gigue' recorded on a little Zoom recorder.
The Band:
Max Hunt - Keyboards, Vocals (Fragile, Steve Howe, Jon Anderson)
Jürgen Link - Drums. (Forgotten Sons - Marillion Tribute)
Andy Schneider - Guitar, Vocals. ( Johnny Crash - Johnny Cash Tribute)
Myself on Bass and Vocals

@@jeffreymiddleton4063 Ys, apart from the main riffs, he generally doesn't play it the same way two night in a row. Because this was a live radio show, and the band had to play to a time limit of just under two hours. They had to shorten the length of solos, and on this song in particular. If you listen to the shows from last month when they were doing a double bill with Deep Purple, Steve Howe's solo on Yours is no disgrace, is much, much shorter than usual, as they could only play 1& 1/2 hours. Anyway, I hope you are able to get some things out of this version that can help you with your version.

Thank you so much. I'm delighted to hear that my breaking it down is helpful. When I make an instructional video, I try to make the video that I would want and need to learn a tune from scratch. I also try to avoid making assumptions that just because it's a Steve Howe piece that the person learning the tune can play on a similar level. I always think how can I keep this simple and as helpful as can be, for everyone. So, I'm very happy to hear that the video is helpful to you. Stick with it and learn it bit by bit. One little piece after another, and before you know it, you will have the whole thing in your fingers. Try not to worry about how long it takes. Best thing is taking it bit by bit, slowly and patiently. Good luck with the tune - it really is a joy to play. All the best. John

Yes, you're right! It's a tricky number getting it clean so low and close to the nut. I used to have play Battle of Epping Forest by Genesis live, and it was a moment of dread on stage, as there is a whole section that is played night up against the nut on a 12 string for about 2 mins straight. Definitely tough on a 12 string! Most of the tunes I post, are recorded straight off the cuff after learning them, so execution is not the goal, it's just about sharing. Thanks for your advice, remaining open to input of others is crucial to improving personal performance. Cheers.

That's great John. I was making a demo in 1990,, and the engineer mentioned that his favorie producer was Bill Bottrell... and that his #1 listen at the time was "Toy Matinee" . I'd not heard it. I was floored when I did. Shortly after, I noticed Bottrell's name on a record in a listening booth...Tuesday Night Music Club- and we know what that brought for Sheryl- although Toy Matinee was far more nuanced. Next thing heard from Kevin was the "Shaming" set, and that for me crystallized the notion that Kevin was clearly brilliant, and had kept growing. Those who know that REALLY know it. It's a mystery why there aren't more of us. You pointed out some things in your song dissection that I'd not thought of, which seem spot on. Opening chord though- I think is open pos. D string fret 4, B string fret 3, which permits more ringing of the B string and thus a good fit.

You're lucky to have been around that scene as it was happening. I first heard Kevin when the sound engineer at a Spocks Beard concert was playing TSOTT on the PA before the show. I knew I was hearing something special.I asked him who it was, and the rest is history. Regarding the first chord, the F# in the chord makes sense when you play 024030 instead of 075700. Thanks for that.

Yes indeed. This video is 13 years old, and access to all that info is now globally available. I learned it using a video featuring Bonilla. I have done an updated video on this song, then T Pierce released a video on it quite recently, and he played a couple of things differently, again. So it just points to the enormous difficulty in knowing what, where and how someone played the guitar on a song. There are so many variations, it is impossible to get it %100 right without actually seeing it played before your eyes. That's why; I’d recommend the Tim Pierce video if you want to learn this, then If you're stuck with anything, use mine as an extended , helping guide.

@@johnmorrell Actually, Tim released 2 separate (lengthy) videos on his channel dedicated to the Toy Matinee project. If you sift through the comment section you'll see I asked this very question and Bill Botrell, who produced the album, confirmed it was Kevin (Zouk) and Tim (capo'ed 12-string) in the control room, playing into a Shure 57 mic.

Hi John, I am sorry to hear that you were ill, and glad that you are back...! Thank you for this video demonstrating the acoustic parts of "Turn of the Century." If I could be greedy, I would love to see you demonstrate the electric parts also. I have learned much from your lessons, and hope to learn more. Thank you very much!

Just found out an alternative way that works better for me. 1st part 2nd chord: instead of D/A bass x00232 (x00142) i play D/F# bass 200232 (100243) That way you can play the 6th string and it sounds ok, the F# leads up to the G
