His music is so calming, and reflective ! I found him when I was about 20 ! Even now when he comes on the radio, I breath a sigh ! He didn't feel the need to yell at us, or blast us with his sound ! I still love his sound ! RIP Gerry !
We point too much towards substances rather than actually facing the nastiness that exists regardless. If alcohol didn't exist then things would be better as they are? I think not.
In my opinion, alcohol is in itself not a bad thing if used respectfully and responsibly the evil in our world has been there from the beginning GOOD vs EVIL and as humans we have free will to choose. ❤ CHOOSE WISELY man will reap what they sow. Thank God for his mercy and grace where we find hope in a beautiful future ❤
I was fortunate to see him in concert St Davids theatre Cardiff in the eighties. Stuck in my mind ever since and now at 84 still play his music with a quiet glass or two---gives me peace and a quiet time to reflect on life ! Gerry R.I.P.
@@TheScotjimland My radar works just fine!😁 I've been a fan for ages just like you. I feel sorry for those who never had the opportunity to discover this treasure.
Nice to see and hear the guy behind so many classics.I never would've thought he was Scottish listening to his vocals. RIP Gerry I hope you are now 'at peace' with things.
Hi there ! From Lima (Peru). Happily Surprised if it is the word ! First time in my life that I hear from the Lovely existence of Gerry ... And Seducted by his Music and voice I've landed here and feeling better knowing that I'm not the only one here ! Something took me here and what I've have found is more than enough for me ! Thank you so much, Gerry and all of you guys ! A new Researcher and Fan have born... It's incredible and I'm proud of being here and now.
I'd never seen this before. So pleased I found it... RIP Gerry. What a quiet and unassuming man he was. A great pity the demon drink got the better of him.
My favourite and go to artist. Such wonderful songs beautifully written & sung with that fantastic voice. It very much sounded like Gerry stayed true to his beliefs. My home will forever be filled with his music. RIP Gerry.
Nice to find this interview. The first thing I heard was Stuck In The Middle which I had on a musiccassette containing the hits of that year. I was nine years old. It's almost 50 years later now and I still listen to his music. His music really stood the test of time. I've been to Scotland twice (I live in The Netherlands) but I hope to visit again and when I do I make sure I'm going to play a Gerry Rafferty song at some point, probably in a pub, during my visit.
A favorite artist since I heard the Baker St collection,(late 1970's) maybe being scottish-Irish(england-wales, to) had so much to do with it, raised in New England from the states his music touched me, away at school in the mid-west(1976-1980) from family and friends, I took to his lyrics and that perfect & smooth vocal delivery, and that MUSIC, sometimes his melancholy crept through and would transport me to another time , Gerry a shy, reclusive guy who had more talent on his little finger, I watched his career all the way to his untimely death, sad the way it all played out but what a talent. Heard him do the old beautiful celtic treasure, She moved through the fair and I just feel his soul, my scottish side came to America from Arbroath, Scotland, all 8 kids after their parents died 1900-1912 period. Just a fantastic legend hard to get out of your head once you hear all his music RIP
"We sit in empty rooms & dream our lives away.. while the spirits come & go without a sound.. and just like you & me they're trying to find a way..find a way.. find their way home." Gerry has found his way home. Thank you for the wonderful music while you were here, Mr Rafferty.
It's not just the Scottish accent, it's also his tone/phrasing that to my ear makes him sound very much like his former bandmate Billy Connolly - maybe I'm imagining it
I've been listening to Gerry Rafferty on and off since I was in my teens. I loved songs like *"Baker St.",* *"Right Down the Line",* *"Whatever's Written In Your Heart",* and *"Family Tree".* :)
13:53 'You Put Something Better' I sang this song with a pal of mine, Kenny Sloane (deceased), about 40 years ago. When I heard it here again, on this video, it reminded me of those times. Yes, it took me back to a different time, to 'the old days' and I thought; "Jeez, I remember that song, that was a great song" - and it was a good song , it was, in fact, a great song. I'm still gigging today. I use a computer to program my songs, and I still do gigs. I will program this song - You Do Something Better' - and I'll darn-well gig it at my Saturday afternoon gig in Glasgow, every Saturday afternoon, in Glasgow's Star Bar (Eglinton Toll) and I'm pretty-sure our lovely, regular, and not so regular customers will love it. I live in Paisley, not so far from where Gerry is from (just coincidence) and if you want to hear this cracking song again then come along to hear me (and Ronnie) at the gig every Sat afternoon. Incidentally, I'll attribute the song to both Gerry Rafferty and to Joe Egan. Gerry, I never knew you personally, but I reckon I'd have enjoyed a natter with you, absolutely. What a great turn you were, mate.👍 Thanks, Dave Lennon
Listen to what Billy Connolly had to say about Gerry - it really tells the story. And I admire his honesty - it would have been easy for him to just spout a few bland platitudes about his talent. But he was courageous enough to tell us the truth. Gerry was a tortured soul. I also believe his drinking strained and ended relationships. I once worked on a Billy Connolly TV special celebrating his talent in front of an invited audience. Gerry was to be invited because of their history. And while Billy accepted he had to be there, he was nervous about it. And he checked where he was to be seated because he didn't want him in his eyeline. This was a complicated relationship.
Gerry Rafferty will always be a hero to me. His music is full of emotion and heart. He hated being in the foreground but he knew that his music will live on for ever.
He’s a man of many talents and redeeming qualities. His songs including Baker Street and Right Down the Line were extremely memorable. Two of the most familiar and the most beloved songs I grew up to. I miss these songs so much even though I listened to John Lennon’s Woman later as I grew older including many other childhood favorites. It’s so sad to lose both Gerry Rafferty and John Lennon. May their legacy continue to shine!❤️❤️❤️❤️😭
I love him. As hard as it was in music back then, to stand out like he did, he sure did. Baker Street will live forever, not to mention all the others. He was overlooked, but will never be forgotten. Salute, R. I. P. God bless! A voice like his belongs in Heaven !
I've always known Baker Street and Stuck In The Middle, but I've only just really discovered Gerry Rafferty through his song Whatever's Written In Your Heart. I love that song and so does my dog - she sings along with me when I sing it to her. I kid you not! What I was going to comment on was the amount of effort that must have gone into his album cover artwork.....man they were incredible, they don't put that kind of effort in anymore, especially for album covers ✌️
Until recently , three weeks ago, only songs I knew were Right Down The Line and Stuck In The Middle. …… Man he was a genius !! I listen to his songs everyday. As soon as I wake up ….. Easy To Talk is playing
'Family Tree', 'The Ark', 'Mary Skeffington', 'Whatevers written in your heart' - how can you choose just one, they all hold a glimpse of a memory. We've all been there, they speak to all of us x
First heard Gerry when he was with Stealers Wheel, stuck in the middle with you came on, I am thinking wow who are these guys? Loved his solo albums. Musical genius.
@trackske It is a very special piece of film because it is the one & only time that Gerry ever looked comfortable in front of the camera. when he is playing with Rab Noakes it's as if he has forgotten the camera was even there.- compare that to the slightly uncomfortable awkwardness you see in any of the other footage on youtube or elsewhere when you see Gerry...
Close your eyes and he sounds exactly like Billy Connelly. Pity they didn't stay together and somehow combine Billy's comedy with Gerry's skills as a musician. They could have been a fantastic team. Hay ho!
You know, I think The Ark is one of my favorite songs by him.... In my experience, some of the better pieces are those that aren't actual hits sometimes.
Dave Lennon, thanks so much for your videos of Gerry. It's great to find them in one place! I have seen all 4 parts of the documentary, but now I can't find Part 3. For some reason, it can't be viewed in the US. You wouldn't happen to know where I could see it again? Thanks so much!
As a stubborn Yorkshire git,I adore Gerry say their telling the big shots he dunt give 2 shits about em,hell do it on his terms, like me, only Iv zero talent and it’s cost me a bloody fortune,my pride has stopped me doing a lot of things so we are better as a minority among our people, but when it’s someone who has the chance to conform and compromise to be a star but doesn’t? Gotta love the ability to make that decision, stupid or not it takes a certain person 🇬🇧👍
He was more popular in the United States because of his style. City to City has an American vibe for example. You wouldn’t say Gerry was originally from Scotland.

A man with exceptional songwriting and singing talents, truly a giant in his craft, sadly taken far too early by the evil that alcohol is. RIP Gerry.
The evil that alcohol is? The evil that this world is and wrapped in moreso. My opinion anyway.
Gerry was a voice of love through his music and lyrics in spite of the evil in this world. Whether alcohol was there or not. Again my opinion.
