Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Viewtiful Joe 2 for the Nintendo GameCube developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom.
Before Okami, before Bayonetta and before The Wonderful 101, the team at Platinum Games was known as Clover Studio. They were an internal team at Capcom with one responsibility-to come up with creative new IP. And the first one they made was Viewtiful Joe. Mission accomplished! Released a year later, this sequel continues where the original left off. Viewtiful Joe 2 is a side-scrolling action platformer starring a bizarre superhero and his bizarre girlfriend in a bizarre story about a Black Emperor and something called the Rainbow Oscars. Hey, no one said Clover/Platinum made conventional games. Viewtiful Joe 2 is built on a complex combat system based on both counterattacks and the manipulation of time. Joe can speed and slow the clock at will, which has different effects on his environment. And his enemies. Viewtiful Joe 2 is a gorgeous game with a bold style and truly unique gameplay.

PE Nintendo They deserve so much more credit. These games gracing Nintendo console is a blessing. They are the cream of the crop in the gaming industry.

Mizzah Tee Right now, your best bet for that is Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble for the original DS, and that one is a bit of a mixed bag. The controls are a little wonky and the rules of battle are different, but the game also has some really cool easter eggs (A good majority of the second World in the game is a giant, well-done reference to another Capcom series)!! :D It's also the closest thing we have to a "Viewtiful Joe 3" since it drops quite a few new important characters and is a sequel to Viewtiful Joe 2.

Dear capcom...... before making a new street fighter we dont need or care about (ultra street fighter iv) why dont you try finishing what you started like the 3rd viewtiful joe story?
If they were to make a Viewtiful Joe 3 exclusively for Wii U that would the day id purchase the Wii U hint hint Nintendo.

That is what Platinum has. The crazyness and color combined with the difficulty of the old days. And not just plain stupid crazy hard to make the game longer on purpose. It's the hard that you see you can accomplish. And always bringing new gameplay mechanics to the table. I loved the Wonderful 101 demo. I really hope to buy it one day. This was a viewtiful review man. Those things you said about the pre-HD era of gaming are true. I don't like sounding like an old crook but damn, seeing all these retro, remake, remastered, definitive, ultimate stuff is giving me a headache.
I loved the first one, the difficulty level nearly got a bit too much for me towards the end, but I persevered with it. Luckily one of my nephews was (still is) a bit of a games-playing-prodigy who managed to unlock all the secret playable characters by finishing the game on it's harder difficulties and then let me copy his save file across to my memory card. I never actually finished the second one, this video's inspired me to give it another go!

Right?! I can't seem to do it, either. I have a backlog for every one of the consoles I own. It feels like it never ends. During the COVID stay at home "order" days, I've played a TON of games, and only managed to beat God of War (PS2), Alan Wake (X360), Forza Horizon & Horizon 2 (X360), Yooka-Laylee (XB1), Asura's Wrath (X360), and Infamous (PS3). I mean that was like...weeks and weeks of playing and only managed to dent 7 games. Only 200 more to go =/ lol
haha, yeah, the only infinites, other than the universe, are human folly and the backlog

viewtiful joe is amazing. platinum games are amazing. can't wait for bayonetta 2.
RIP capcom. I hope they get bought out by Nintendo. It also sucks that VJ was suppose to have 3 games in the series, but the 3rd main game was never made. It sucks even more, since the story never finished. You got a nice build up to the true badguy and then nothing. Overall, it was a great series, including the 2 side games.

One of my fave game series ever Viewtiful joe 1 i liked best i uncooked captain blue. I like the gamecube versions best though. Wow they where great days capcom.

I remember when this game came out and I couldn't stand it or the animated series... I was like ten or so? I just didn't like the art style and thought it was too weird. I recently picked it up and loved it. But at that age I hated anything that wasn't a quirky JRPG

I'd say 1 but maybe just because I mastered that one. Lol I know this response is very late tho.
I've always consider games made by Clover Studio to be Clover Studio games. they may of been funded by Capcom and consist of former staff. But they worked as an independent studio.
From what I played of the first one, I enjoyed it. The only problem I have with it is just that the game doesn't tell you which direction to dodge in when the enemy attacks.

Are you kidding? Besides the giant flashing skull face showing you where to dodge, each attack has a different animation telling you where the attack is coming.

The skull face just tells you the enemy is going to attack not which direction they'll be attacking. The pre attack animations look the same.

the skull face is either high or low. You doge depending on where it is. It tells you exactly what to do in the tutorial. And the animations aren't the same, the punch and kick have different wind ups.

It's "Henshin a gogo, baby"! It's like the catchphrase in the game they say every time something cool happens or a boss is destroyed. That phrase also appears in Bayonetta as a reference to Viewtiful Joe. Bayonetta in fact has a ton of references to other games, for example at the beginning, "Eggman" is buried and one of the tombstones reads Team Little Angel as a reference to Team Little Devil from Devil May Cry.
