One really awesome thing about this game is you can take your save data from your memory card and use it on the arcade machine F-Zero AX, and you can unlock stuff for GX through AX. Good luck finding an existing cabinet though.
AWESOME game! One of the reasons I still have my gen 1 Wii is to play this game in 480p. Great review. If you see this game, get it! Not to mention the hidden Japanese arcade mode!
I beat this game FULLY. An amazing challenge. I LOVE this game so much. Got it in 2004 and just practiced. It's great when you get used to it. Easy and Standard Grand Prix difficulty are BOOORRRRRING. HArd's Standard and Master is FUN. =3
I beat every chapter of story mode on the hardest difficulty and had several cups completed on master difficulty. Mind you i was 12 when this game released. I spent soooo many hours working on that as a pre-teen/young teenager and I gave up at some point... Needless to say i've since lost the memory card. I have 3 copies of this game and am seriously itching to dig into it again at 22 years old lol. I think i'm going to start my epic journey to 100% completion tomorrow, Wish me luck!
Duuuuude NICE xD I was 14 when I got it and have it mastered here at 23. It's easier when you're older and have had lots of "seat time" in the "gamer's chair". You MUST dig into this again. A great test for your hand eye coordination and just all around "I feel DAMN proud of myself." experience each time you clear a grand prix on master JUST for fun. >=D
easy?!? EASY?!?!? EAAAAASYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?! *explodes, commencing rant* novice? standard? expert? master? more like: Brutal, soul-crushing, mother of god, and WHY ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?!?!?! how long did it take YOU?!? i have been playing a looong time... and im stuck. on the second fucking race. on the first fucking cup. on the "easy" setting. what...... are you?
Hahahaha xD omg DUDE. It's a HARD game. I play it at its basics so when I play Master, it's tough but a rush in turn being fun! I don't know how to perform the special techniques solidly enough to be at a godlike level. lol Believe it or not I only started getting good around early 2010. But was able to clear Master easily in 2013. So awhile, man. It took a good while. Mind you I wasn't ONLY playing this game over the years. Haha.
3Deelites half tempted to get an action replay just to unlock everything THEN go back and practice up and actually mastering this game.i just get tired of most of the game being forever closed off from me. >.< i didnt say i didnt like it.... if it wasnt for the difficulty id like it a ton more though.
Not as difficult as he makes it seem, once you get the turning down it is by far my favorite racing game ever. It's characters are cheezy, it's racing is FAST, Tons of unique tracks, loads of unlockables, backstories(however corny) for each character, excellent controls, smooth gameplay, and ridiculously great music. This NEEDS a sequel
This new review is to your older reviews as Mario Galaxy 2 is to Mario Galaxy. The bit of extra humor in your voice made something already good even better. You show passion about games, but also integrate just the right sprinkle of Mark's style.
yeah I mean wtf why nintendo is being such a turd? they broke my ritual of buying metroid and fzero as my first games for a nintendo console; they sell their games for a shit ton of money(I onlly have 1 game fro the 3ds and I bought it since day 1). They did all that crap yet they cant fuckin make a new fzero cause they say they lack new ideas and they didnt even consider a remake of the series (even though they remade starfox and zelda 64 for 3ds).
I bought this game for my best friend who says he likes racing games. After six minutes of watching me play it he said "This game gives me a headache". it turned out that I was the one who fell in love with the game haha
They should have babies play this game when their brain is still forming and has a high level of plasticity to make their brains form crazy fast reflex neuro pathways.
nice review, but u forgot to mention that the gran-prix & story mode are the backbone of the game. i'd like to know if they work in conjunction with one another? thanks in advance and best regards.
CheetosForBreakfast Online multiplayer, leaderboards, custom track editor, DLC cars and tracks, an X-style thrash metal soundtrack, and even crazier twisting and knotting tracks that make Phantom Road from GX look like a cakewalk!
I passed chapter 3 of the story mode after 3 days. The difficulty is high but it's not impossible to beat. You need to know the tricks behind it, that's all.
i agree, after he said he was stuck at chapter 3, i remembered i was also stuck at chapter 3. so i said to myself "challenge accepted!" went and got f zero running, and after about 20 tries i finally got it. chapter 4 was easier than 3.
I LOVE this game. I played it so much back in the day. Now I can play it at 60 fps on my laptop through dolphin. Oh god the memories, I absolutely love it. One of my all time favorite games after gaming for over 16 years.
Don't forget about the awesome soundtrack! Took me 4 years to beat all the cups on master class. And while I did finish the story mode, I can't beat them all on the hardest difficulty. I don't have enough chest hair to do that. Awesome game, and my favorite game on the Cube, as well as my favorite Nintendo franchise. I hope someday they will release a new one.
My favorite stages were the Cosmo Terminal: Trident, and the Lightning Half Pipe. Mastering two of the hardest tracks on the game makes the game that much easier to follow during a race. It also works on your reflexes. I love this game!!!
Congratulations! A winner is me! Although, I'm now curious. If you beat all the Staff Ghosts in time attack, do you get anything extra? That's the only thing I've never done in that game and never will (I suck horribly at drifting. Could never get it to work right. Not even in F-Zero X).
This review and the mention of this games difficulty makes me feel so hardcore. I have made 1st all the cups (AX cup too) in all difficulties (Including master) and beaten all 9 story chapters in normal and hard (Working on very hard) Its just a gift to functon with games like these.
What you need: 1. quick turns (hold trigger and same direction, then quickly hold the opposite trigger and opposite direction the way you want to turn. This will allow you to take on pretty much ANY corner or turn) 2. Use easy to handle machines like the blue falcon. -some machines are very hard to control 3. Keep machine settings max speed, or close -max speed, less touchy 4. Practice, Focus, and Patience First time I played this, couldn't pass ch. 3 Ive beaten it 3 times
@achievement84 I have to agree with your sentiments. In this review, Derek managed to tweak his style by eliminating verbiage and sticking with the concept of CGR: showing the audience the fun and not so fun aspects of the game. He even managed to add a bit of humor in the review. Very well done!
A few of this game's Gran Prix cups are named Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. ...Can anybody think of what other Nintendo franchise was using these monikers, during the same time frame as this game?
Got this game as a gift when I was younger. I didn't realize until many years later that it made itself known for its brutal difficulty. All this time I thought I just sucked at it when really, it's an exceptionally challenging game!
The game being hard is a selling point for me. It made F-Zero GX unique in comparison to other titles in the last generation where games in general became easier and more casual friendly. I love this game and unfortunately I lost my disc some five years ago and I only have the cover to show for it. Now that the Wii U has been released and we can finally play Nintendo games in HD I would really like a new F-Zero title. Keep the difficulty. It's what keeps this franchise fresh.
I bought the game back in 03 :) I also actually managed to beat the story mode back then! i just recently picked it up again, because i absolutel LOVE the game...and i managed to beat all story missions on hard and very hard and ALSO manageing to beat The Grad Prix cups at Expert and Master difficulty, i have unlocked everything in the game and i am damn proud of it =) its the ONLY racing game i ever enjoyed and its hands down one of my fav. games of all time.
I picked this game up the first day of its release. I was absolutely flabbergasted at how quickly the price fell from 50 dollars to 20 in such a short amount of time. This is definitely one of my favorite games.
I managed to 100% this when I was 16. Took me a year. Greatest racing game I've ever played. He didn't even touch on the more technical stuff. For example, I know for a fact he wasn't trying to do this, but at 7:51 he almost fell off the track and got back on. That's a legit tactic called shift boosting. Repeated use along with some other tactics like MT boosting and snaking can get you up to 2200kmh (like the back of the box says) WITHOUT boosting. It's about as in depth as fighters, really. :3
Congratulations! A winner is me! Although, I'm now curious. If you beat all the Staff Ghosts in time attack, do you get anything extra? That's the only thing I've never done in that game and never will (I suck horribly
A couple of years ago I was able to beat the game in Hard Mode... that was enough to remind me that I have become a man. Now onto becoming a monster...
I dont get why Nintendo gives so little love to this Franchise. Its just an amazing game! great gameplay, great graphics, and great dificultty! I mean, in a time where Nintendo's having issues with atracting the mature audiences, this would be a nice bet! I've never understood why, while Nintendo makes sooo many Mario and Pokemon games, and at least two Zelda games per generation (not counting the hanheld systems) it gives soo little love to series like this, or Metroid or Star Fox! they are great games, and maybe the crowd its smaller than with the other franchises but its still pretty large, and with a little bit of support it can grow a lot more... well, one can only wish...
Even though the F-Zero games are fantastic, unfortunately the series hasn't done very well financially. The early games sold well, but the last three sold poorly, as Derek pointed out with GX. Nintendo left the series by the way side because not many people bought the games.
I had beaten this game earlier this year, and yeah Derek, it was insanely hard. It took me too many tries to beat and plus theres actually 10 "AX characters" to earn. I was very happy when i had beaten this game. You have 3 difficulties in each story mode chapter. Beating the hardest difficult of each chapter grants you the secret arcade AX characters. I beat the whole game but you have to be Japanese to beat this whole game and yet i pulled it off. This was the HARDEST game i've ever played.
@WakizashiSabre ... and maybe some digital soul. This was achieved mostly for Nintendo games and their consoles. I miss that feel in todays games and I really gladly return or reveal older games for this. Good review by the way. =)
I love this game too despite the difficulty. Good to know I am not the only one who gets destroyed by the story mode. The cut scenes look so amazing though that I have to keep playing to unlock them.
i'd wanted the game for years, and got it in 2011. I have since then beaten ALL Grand Prix's on all difficulties from easy to master with several original and custom machines. I have beaten most story levels up until chapter 7, which I cant get past still, but have beat the first 2 or 3 story levels on hard difficulty, one without snaking. the very reason got this game was my unhealthy obsession with Captain Falcon and his phrase, "FALCON PAWNCHHHHH!!!" XD now that im going into college this fall, I wont have too much time to finish it tho... :P
OfficerMarmalade speaking of difficulty, did u ever get past Chapter 7 in Story Mode? I find it impossible to do, with and without snaking. I've once been with a millisecond or two of winning but not in first yet.any tips?
Yeah I beat Black Shadow by milliseconds in max speed. I suggest taking out Blood Hawk and Black Bull and maybe just practice on GP or Time Attack just to hone your skills a bit more, and it took me like 3 hours of strait grinding to beat it. Just be persistent!
Haha I remember this game. The first time I played it I couldn't beat the first level. The second time I tried it I think I got to that level with Samurai Goro or at least I remember it. Also I know you probably don't take requests but Star Wars: Racer Revenge is an awesome racer that I would love to see reviewed. By you or Mark.
This game is not as hard as everyone says. It's the speed, intensity and skill required which makes this game so awesome. Not to sound "youtube" cliche, but this is honestly my favorite racing game of all time.
@7TT77 got this game after so many years from the release and I have to say, wow. It is something Wipeout, but faster, lighter, but in a good sense. The vehicles feels as a paper, but in that speed, it is no problem. Also the design is so nice. I only probably miss a weapons from Wipeout, which is more aggressive, I would say. 9/10 game 10/10 from racers. And as was noted, this is really under-appreciated gem for the Cube. If I look back into those years,I would say those games had style...
Looking back, I have no idea where the inhuman patience came from that dragged me into beating the game. I nearly fainted when I saw I had unlocked not only diamond cup, but also "master" difficulty. I look fondly back at this game, but all I have are memories of great pride. Did you know you can't copy an F-Zero GX game save? I have a small memory card dedicated for the saves of this game. I defend it with my life.
This was the nintendo gamecube game that i remember going to the store and always seeing and thinking about getting when i was a kid but never did..that and super mario sunshine.
It's a hard game alright! I recently started playing it again myself and I forgot how difficult it can be, especially the story mode. I completed mission #5 - 'Save Jody' on very hard the other day after 100+ attempts and having an aneurysm. However, once you understand the game, it can provide an enjoyable, yet challenging experience that some games can't hope to deliver. Like CGR Undertow said: F-Zero is under-appreciated and I think that it certainly deserves a bigger and faster sequel.
Also, whats funny is that he accidentally uses a very advanced tactic at the end of the video. Right after he gets back on the track after nearly falling off, you can see his speed goes up to 2500 from 1000. This is called shift-boosting and can make that course take 25 seconds.
I maneged to beat the story mode on normal. I was stuck on the 3rd mission for a while too. It is definitly one of the hardest missions. There is one other mission I found just as hard though. Overall, I LOVE this game. No way will I ever beat it fully, but it is a blast to play, still. I love the sense of speed, the music, and brilliant track designs.
i loved this game idk if i beat it but i know there was only one track that was really hard but for me this game wasnt that difficult.now i want to get the game again and see if i still got it
I can imagine in the Future when real racing is just like this they will look back and think WOW a video game from the 21st century was the Basis for this sport.
You know my wife and I love this game. I just have been wondering why they haven't made a new F-Zero for the Wi? And don't try to tell me the Wii can't handle it because I have seen two futuristic racers that are amazing on the Wii. Speed Racer and Fast Racing Legue both run smoothly on the Wii. Not to mention FRL is a Wiiware game that runs at 60 FPS, and it works perfectly with motion controls. I just don't get why Nintendo hasn't made one for Wii. They've made one since the SNES.
you need to buy them, go to customize > f-zero shop > machine, everyone has a different prize, you get credits when you win a grand prix or finish a chapter on story mode
Mario Kart = Casual
F-Zero = Hardcore ONLY
Dude, completely differente genres, even though both are racers.
SyaoranPT That's true. But it's also 100% true to what I said as well.
Now this is a game that needs to come back NINTENDO.
2018 & still waiting!
With the switch graphics. That would be awesome
:) Im ready
it's dead
@@jasonmyers82782023 and still mad 😡
Novice- Beatable
Standard: Good Luck
Expert: You're screwed
Master: Don't even try.
One really awesome thing about this game is you can take your save data from your memory card and use it on the arcade machine F-Zero AX, and you can unlock stuff for GX through AX. Good luck finding an existing cabinet though.
I can't believe it's been almost ten years since this review. CGR Undertow is part of a very important era of my life.
CGR is 20 years old .... i remember as a kid i watched the old CGR website in 2000/2001
AWESOME game! One of the reasons I still have my gen 1 Wii is to play this game in 480p. Great review. If you see this game, get it! Not to mention the hidden Japanese arcade mode!

easy?!? EASY?!?!? EAAAAASYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
*explodes, commencing rant*
novice? standard? expert? master? more like:
Brutal, soul-crushing, mother of god, and WHY ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?!?!?!
how long did it take YOU?!? i have been playing a looong time... and im stuck. on the second fucking race. on the first fucking cup. on the "easy" setting. what...... are you?

For me, it gets harder the more I play it. I learn new strategies and better execution, so I challenge myself even more when I play.
"and if you can beat this game, congratulations"
I honestly feel like a boss now.
we desperately need a new hd f zero on wii u. this game still looks amazing today.
VejyMonsta Even just an HD remake of GX would be amazing!
This was one of the better reviews I've seen over this game. Nice work!
This new review is to your older reviews as Mario Galaxy 2 is to Mario Galaxy. The bit of extra humor in your voice made something already good even better. You show passion about games, but also integrate just the right sprinkle of Mark's style.
hey, your reviewas have improved soo much.this was soo well done.i'm glad i subscribed.
Enjoyable watch and listen! I'm almost a winner, 1 mission to go (on very hard). Glad you liked the game as much as I did!
I always hoped Mark would make more gamecube reviews, it's good to see undertow doing some.
I hope to see more in the future.
I would poop if they made Fzero on the WiiU
I do poop even though they don't make one :(
That's a good point
I would rip my nail off if they make a new fzero game for the 3DS...
I'd even accept it if they lowered the difficulty slightly compared to GX.
yeah I mean wtf why nintendo is being such a turd? they broke my ritual of buying metroid and fzero as my first games for a nintendo console; they sell their games for a shit ton of money(I onlly have 1 game fro the 3ds and I bought it since day 1). was that a slight technical hiccup at 5:28 or was it just me?
the first editor for Undertow had a fair share of those; it's always funny to spot :)
I bought this game for my best friend who says he likes racing games. After six minutes of watching me play it he said "This game gives me a headache". it turned out that I was the one who fell in love with the game haha
Poor kid. I heard a new F-zero is coming out soon made by the developers of Gran Turismo.
They should have babies play this game when their brain is still forming and has a high level of plasticity to make their brains form crazy fast reflex neuro pathways.
...all of my children... All of themm... I shall raise them with f zero...
when you've done that, come back and find this vid so you can tell us how it all worked out please.
K cool bruh
Literally
+TommyTwo Tacos Either that or they'll be lying paralized and dribbeling in front of the TV and literally become a vegetable lulz
His voice was deeper when he first started this game. But after that ''Savage kick to the groin'' well, you know the rest.
Well, now we know why we haven't had a new F-Zero game in a long time.
This one was too damn hard.
Ah, very cool review! Thanks for the work you put into this.
This is the first review of yours I actually enoyed thanks
nice review, but u forgot to mention that the gran-prix & story mode are the backbone of the game. i'd like to know if they work in conjunction with one another?
thanks in advance and best regards.
F zero gx in widescreen hd for wiiu please nintendo! That is all
I agree, along with the super mario galaxy games
I'd rather a new F Zero game with online multiplayer.
CheetosForBreakfast THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN
Make it even faster too!
CheetosForBreakfast Online multiplayer, leaderboards, custom track editor, DLC cars and tracks, an X-style thrash metal soundtrack, and even crazier twisting and knotting tracks that make Phantom Road from GX look like a cakewalk!
Can u imagine if they made an f zero like the original or f zero x this for switch but your vs 29 online other players
A winner is me! And then after story mode there's hard and very hard difficulties and staff ghosts to beat. Derek's only scratched the surface.
I was waiting to see MISSION FAILED at the end. I still can't beat that one! 😅😅
HadoukenDude Just wait until you get to Chapter 7! *shudder*
Oh god no.
Seriously though I love this game and I'm glad you do too. Good review!!
Nice graphics for F-Zero X! Good review!
I LOVE this game. I played it so much back in the day. Now I can play it at 60 fps on my laptop through dolphin. Oh god the memories, I absolutely love it. One of my all time favorite games after gaming for over 16 years.
Was ther any chats for story mode i need to get this back on gamecube
Don't forget about the awesome soundtrack! Took me 4 years to beat all the cups on master class. And while I did finish the story mode, I can't beat them all on the hardest difficulty. I don't have enough chest hair to do that. Awesome game, and my favorite game on the Cube, as well as my favorite Nintendo franchise. I hope someday they will release a new one.
I beat all but Chapter 5 Save Jody on very hard. I don't know why I can't get it!
Derek's game choice is outstanding. He's 6th gen guy for what I seen and he knows the classic gaming. Mark and Derek are complementary.
What you need:
1. quick turns (hold trigger and same direction, then quickly hold the opposite trigger and opposite direction the way you want to turn. This will allow you to take on pretty much ANY corner or turn)
2. Use easy to handle machines like the blue falcon.
-some machines are very hard to control
3. Keep machine settings max speed, or close
-max speed, less touchy
4. Practice, Focus, and Patience
First time I played this, couldn't pass ch. 3
Ive beaten it 3 times
@achievement84
I have to agree with your sentiments. In this review, Derek managed to tweak his style by eliminating verbiage and sticking with the concept of CGR: showing the audience the fun and not so fun aspects of the game. He even managed to add a bit of humor in the review. Very well done!
and i love the music in this franchise
I love both F-Zero X and GX, but I love GX more by a teeny tiny little hair.
A few of this game's Gran Prix cups are named Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. ...Can anybody think of what other Nintendo franchise was using these monikers, during the same time frame as this game?
@MiiDylan
Possibly because the video hasn't finished processing yet?
Got this game as a gift when I was younger. I didn't realize until many years later that it made itself known for its brutal difficulty. All this time I thought I just sucked at it when really, it's an exceptionally challenging game!
Great review, but I didn't hear you mention that you can create your own rides
I wanted the cube for this game alone. All F Zero games rock!
100% PURE AWESOME! The Gamecube ROCKED! Makes me glad I have a version 1 Wii with Gamecube support and this game! Thanks for the review!
Today I finally beat story mode level 7.. it took only 15 years.. but one of the best games if you got the patience!
how old are you now
Why use astro robin at almost max accel?
best racing game of all time. Nothing can touch this masterpiece. Nothing.
I've beaten this game. Whoohoo ^^
It is, probably, the hardest game, i've ever finished.
I bought the game back in 03 :)
I also actually managed to beat the story mode back then! i just recently picked it up again, because i absolutel LOVE the game...and i managed to beat all story missions on hard and very hard and ALSO manageing to beat The Grad Prix cups at Expert and Master difficulty, i have unlocked everything in the game and i am damn proud of it =) its the ONLY racing game i ever enjoyed and its hands down one of my fav. games of all time.
Is this game harder than whipeout?
Nice review Derek!, i love F-Zero :) .
I think it literally is the most underrated game of all time. Brilliant
I picked this game up the first day of its release. I was absolutely flabbergasted at how quickly the price fell from 50 dollars to 20 in such a short amount of time.
This is definitely one of my favorite games.
I JUST bought this game...It will arrive tomorrow at my home, along with the XG3 game...
Nostalgia meter: OVER 9000!
I managed to 100% this when I was 16. Took me a year. Greatest racing game I've ever played.

I guess I just don't get what you said.
It sounded like you were saying they were similar only because they're both futuristic racers.
Congratulations! A winner is me! Although, I'm now curious. If you beat all the Staff Ghosts in time attack, do you get anything extra? That's the only thing I've never done in that game and never will (I suck horribly
I really want this game... Should I get it?
This is by far one of the best racing games i have ever played. And my personal Favorite game on the Gamecube.
Imagine a new fzero with online play on the wii u in HD.... man that would just be fantastic.
theMenace985 a disaster
A couple of years ago I was able to beat the game in Hard Mode... that was enough to remind me that I have become a man. Now onto becoming a monster...
3rd Chapter... you talking about it on Normal, Hard or Very Hard?
@eugenmichailow Is it better than the original concept of F-Zero X?
I dont get why Nintendo gives so little love to this Franchise. Its just an amazing game! great gameplay, great graphics, and great dificultty! I mean, in a time where Nintendo's having issues with atracting the mature audiences, this would be a nice bet!

Eruantano mentions many of the main points, but it also is important to note that like star fox, z zero was never extremely popular in japan
nice commentary, enjoyed very much
I love this game too despite the difficulty.
Wow, you know snaking? Cool.
OfficerMarmalade yeah, I didn't even know about it until I saw it on youtube, and its still quite difficult for me... :P
It took a while for me to get the hang of it too.
Not to sound "youtube" cliche, but this is honestly my favorite racing game of all time.
how about rollcage, and stage II of that? :D
What was up with 5:25 - 5:50. Other than that I always enjoy your reviews.
Now you should check out CrazyGameNerd's Very Hard speedrun of this game. Its insane and I love it.
I now have a Game Cube. I will have to get this game. I hope i can purchase it for a good price.
There's actually 40 racers and 5 Grand Prix, but the extra 10 racers and grand prix(es?) are really hard to unlock.
finally got a wii and finally ordered this game... i played f-zero x for years and beat everything....omg this will be so awesome :D
F-Zero needs to make a comeback to show Wipeout how futuristic racing games play!
My all time favorite franchise. F-Zero FTW!
@DaNileChannel
It cannot be fine if it's so considerably difficult for the masses. What's the sense of playing a game you know you can't beat?
I maneged to beat the story mode on normal. I was stuck on the 3rd mission for a while too. It is definitly one of the hardest missions. There is one other mission I found just as hard though.
Overall, I LOVE this game. No way will I ever beat it fully, but it is a blast to play, still. I love the sense of speed, the music, and brilliant track designs.
Still the best futuristic racer out there! Stunning!
Wow! I'm glad to hear that SEGA was involved in this masterpiece.
5:26 - 5:42 I'm not going mentally insane right?
When you fall off the course, the announcer says "Of course." like he KNEW you were gonna lose. LOL
didnt Namco AND Sega have a Hand in this Occular MasterPiece?
i loved this game idk if i beat it but i know there was only one track that was really hard but for me this game wasnt that difficult.now i want to get the game again and see if i still got it
I can imagine in the Future when real racing is just like this they will look back and think WOW a video game from the 21st century was the Basis for this sport.
