Seeing everyone tries to describe TDH’s genre is so entertaining 😂

The Bitter Suite trilogy (parts I & III in particular) is one of the most majestic pieces I’ve ever heard. The story being told through hunter is so personal and powerful, with those gorgeous piano melodies and heart beating drums to boot!

Got to see these guys live with Leprous and Between the Buried and Me, what a show that was!

Ahh I’m so jealous! Leprous and The Dear Hunter are my top favorite bands. That’s a dream show there lol.

I was at that tour too. Leprous stole the show at the night I went.

Really enjoying your reaction to my favourite band of all time and looking forward to seeing you continue the journey & the other music you've got coming up. I also really enjoy your "finger castanets" when you pick up the beat!

Genre-wise I see TDH as the peak of Indie-Prog though I just call it all prog :) I see it as a kind of twin to the more popular version of prog which incorporates metal elements (even when its not prog-metal.) TDH I would say never implements metal, but they do use every other genre in their writing. That is what makes them stand out from other "prog" to me.

Casey should be writing Broadway musicals. Not that his talent is wasted, but imagine this as a theatrical performance. Of course Casey would probably never give in to demands of someone funding his screenplay if they wanted a say. Keep going Casey!!!

tbh, I struggle a bit with the earlier acts. there's a lot of personality and cool instrumentation there, but the production and the vocals are still far from refined. Still, "Meeting Ms. Leading" is what brought me to the band. I really enjoy acts IV and V and Antimai, so I'm excited for what they're going to come up with in the future.

In true progressive fashion, as the band matured their sound progressed as well using more orchestration and overall better production as the Acts progressed. A lot of people enjoy the rawness of the post rock vocals and earlier production and that is fine, but by the 4th Act you will hear the vast difference in maturity in the writing and production.

when i was younger, as a lover of post hardcore and classic progressive rock, i was pulled in instantly the moment i heard city escape. then i became obsessed the moment i heard act 2. even the harshness of the percussion/vocals drew me in, it felt so heavy and was exactly what i wanted at the time. the amazing thing about tdh is that there's literally something for everyone, its such incredible music.

As much as I love the production quality of their later albums and the ACTS, I absolutely love the harshness and production of ACT 2 the most. maybe it's a bit of nostalgia but I think it fits very well with the theme of the album.

The inter-album lyrical and melodic reprises become more common as we proceed through the Acts (more to reference back to), but already here we have a glimpse of one of my favorite intra-album reprises.
"We fall beneath the sea in the back of our hearts and fail to breath until we resurface again" from Bitter Suite III returns in the form of "We fall beneath the sea of dreams and fail to breath until we awaken again" in Vital Vessels Vindicate at the end of this album. Hard to overstate the value of relistening to these albums again and again.

You’d be doing yourself a great disservice if you don’t do acts 3,4, and 5. Acts 4 and 5 were actually recorded with a full orchestra

    Hi Jim,
Well, I try again. Hopefully the singer will sing a bit more normal this time.
No, more of the same scream singing 🤬…why?
2nd song. The start is promising. Again..no, here we go again.
The dear hunter definitely isn’t the band for me. Regularly scream singing and a constant slight distortion of the singers voice is too much for me.

If you’re not into the dramatic yell-singing, but like the instrumentation I suggest you check out Act 4 and Act 5, as well as their stand alone album Migrant. As they progress as a band they drop the yelling. Not to say that yell-singing isn’t “mature”, as I love it, but it’s surely not for everyone.

These old albums aren't the best representation of the band's current style. Definitely check out some newer stuff - Acts 4, 5, Migrant, Antimai

Seconding the other replies. Additionally, the lead singer went on record to say he had a cold during this record, exacerbating the raspiness of his voice. While he felt it fits this record (being about a young man scorned by his lover) Act IV and Act V are FAR more refined. I'd skip Act III still. It's about war, and it's not pretty. Try just the song 'A Night on the Town' or 'Waves'. I think it's a better approximation of their later sound.
