This album ironically came out days after my mother died, I wouldn’t discover the album until over a decade and a few years later since I was 5 years old, and my mom was only 26, but when I did discover it my grandfather was very ill and he would die soon after that, this band and album helped me get through my grandfather’s death and in a way also come to terms with my mother’s death because the procession and the lake and the river deals with some of what I had felt most of my life.
It’s been a long, long time since I’ve given this record a truly close listen, so re-experiencing it with you here is really nice. I’m suddenly remembering why I considered The Lake and the River one of their best songs for so long. I’m glad you’re enjoying this so far, and I look forward to the rest of the parts!
I would buy a ticket to see a live production of this play. For sure. Love how each character has their own unique place in the music and you know what character is currently on the stage or being talked about based on the subtle changes and reprisals throughout. It's genius.
Heya Jim, sort of new viewer here. Love that you're getting into my favourite band. I enjoyed your Act I playthrough a lot! I implore you to keep listening, Act III is totally different, Act IV and V are their best quality Acts records. The story keeps on giving and the more you listen, the more you recognize. It's almost like a good Netflix series! I'll keep tuning in if you keep listening.
The first time I heard of the idea of a concept carried out over many albums was last year or so from the artist Roger Dean. I can no longer find the interview or comment where he said this, but I found it enlightening and it has stuck with me. Dean was addressing why he turned down doing the cover for Olias of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson. He acknowledged that the common thought that he was too busy at the time to commit to it is true, but he also expanded on his reason. Dean basically said that by the time the solo albums were being done, having worked on Fragile, Close To The Edge, YesSongs, Tales, and Relayer he had his own vision of the story of the survivors on the space galleon escaping the exploding planet on the cover of Fragile, and regardless of the title or music of the Yes album he was working on, the cover would somehow tie into the storyline in his head. Olias totally did not mesh with the story he intended to tell, so he excused himself from doing it. Of course, he had to wait for Drama to continue that story, but my understanding is he is still portraying his vision going all the way back to Fragile on every Yes cover he has done. Now that is a long continuous album concept!
I almost missed this! Ahem: HELL YEAH! God I love these records. This particular vinyl is, in my experience, not the greatest pressing ever done, but it gets the job done at least, and the album has - ahem - post-hardcore mastering, anyway, so it's not the end of the world. Fun fact that you may cover in the video but I'm typing this in advance: Casey Crescenzo recorded many of the vocals on this record whilst sick, which results in the most perfectly imperfect delivery for the style of music they're going for here.
Act2 is my favorite album in the world and has been since it released. I have listened to it in full so many times I cannot remember how many it is, but it's in the hundreds. Act 3/4/5 are amazing albums as well so hopefully you get to them. Truly life changing pieces of music.
Act II or III is my least favorite, but it's not bad. I still listen to the Acts in order each time. In fact, I went back to listen to the Jim's reaction to Act 1 before listening to this just out of habit. Casey said he wanted the conclusion in Act 6 to be in a short film, but lacks the funding ATM. I'm hoping with the success of Antimai and the more recent short film on the beginning of the new story arc that Casey will feel the need to change it up and create Act 6 in the middle of the story of the Indigo Child. He likes to do that to keep things fresh.
@@Arrow2theACL yeah jut was for many years kept under wraps. The quote that I recall just paraphrasing "We have a chance to do something completely different and unique with Act 6"..but eventually the Film idea came out. I know the Indigo Child short was a massive undertaking for him, mainly financially. I wonder if his best chance is to crowd fund it, despite how much Casey is not crazy about doing it. But he did it successfully with Amour & Attrition, so why not with Act 6? However, I really don't know how much he actually wants to work on and make Act 6 right now, which to me is the biggest factor. He's way more focused on the Antimai/Indigo Child world. Sunya is supposedly the next record, but even that may not come out next (instead of like some EPs or something he alluded to recently on an Instagram live).
Act II is also my favorite! Honestly it holds a special place as one of my favorite albums of all time. It’s just such a beautiful and personal listen!
Incredibly fresh prog band👍. Unfortunately their vinyl is almost impossible to get in Germany. CD's show up at the one or other dealer from time to time. Too bad, but the American market is big enough for many bands and therefore a few sales in Germany are dispensable. Sometimes there are some really expensive Imports to get.
If you're looking for more stories that span multiple albums, both Coheed and Cambria, and Ayreon are what you're looking for. Ayreon does prog rock operas with multiple vocalists playing the parts of different characters. A lot of it is really cheesy, but I really love it. Highly recommend!
Hi Jim, I can’t remember Act one album 😬👨🏼🦳. A priest and a prostitute. Remembers me of Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime. The first part of the first song is nice. Then some screaming which I don’t like at all. For me this song is on the wrong side of the edge. Second, sorry third song starts very nice. Again, I don’t like the singing because it tends to scream singing again. Musically it’s ok. I now remember my previous comments; I didn’t like his singing and the distortion of the singing. Well, this is more of the same again. The oracle song is funny. Sounds like a steam train gaining speed from the beginning. What follows is nice and funny too.
@@JimNewstead yes, I wrote that in my comment so therefore the last part of my comment is missing because you haven’t seen that.. RUclips has strange ways of working sometimes.
Elated to see this series continue, Jim. Only up from here as all have said. Having only listened to the digital releases, I was wondering how they'd handle the cutoff between vinyl sides, as most songs from here on out do transition rather seamlessly. Seems the fade out-in on transition point will work well enough. Excited for the rest!
More to come! And I’m sorry you’ve had a few duff videos…. But I can’t please all of the people all of the time. In fact, I don’t try to please any one any of the time, just post what I want and hopefully at least a few people will enjoy it! This is great though to be sure!
The Act IV is a masterpiece!
I wait excitedly!
Let’s goooo 🎉

The Acts are a masterpiece. Incredible piece of songwriting!
They are!
I'd love to see you react to every album. They are incredible and unique pieces of art. More people need to know about TDH.
The lake and the river is my favorite song from them. Its perfect proggy goodness.

Wouldn’t that be a thing!?

Glad you're continuing with the dear hunter! Can't wait until you get to acts 3 and 4, those are definitely my favourite!
That's the plan!

There were moments on side 4 that hurt my ears…. Otherwise amazing!

Thanks for for returning to the dear hunter. Act II is my favorite! Also awesome to see you actually got the vinyl!
It is truly awesome to have this on vinyl!
7 months later and no continuation into Act 3?? What's up with that!?
niiice!..should be fun. Act II stil remains my favorite.
also there have been 5 Act records..the 6th?..remains in uncertain limbo.

They played this live in an incredible video which can no longer be found on YT. Shame ! Hopefully I dl'd it !

There’s a few kicking around in eBay but they are quite pricey!
Have you tried looking on discogs

The Post Rock vocals decrease as the Acts progress. We will be getting into more vocal harmonies again.
looks like a bootleg album. the actual album cover is completely different to what you have
It's an official re-issue.

This is more like it, Jim. The last couple of videos were not my bag. Thanks for getting back to this great group. They define "progressive" music.
