City boy here, born and raised. I have no desire to farm and I still watch your channel like a hawk. I’m glad you and Miss Kelly have decided to reset and do what’s best for you. I’ll be watching and waiting for the next adventures.
would appreciate your information on decision - various breed characteristics and their comparisons, then choosing which to raise based on local or homestead factors. Am interested in thoughts on Idaho pasture pigs.
I enjoyed watching you raise the red wattles. It made me rethink my entire opinion on pigs. For the better, of course. We'll be here watching whatever you put out there, it is all homesteading to me.
I think you are spot on!! Improve your infrastructure! Also, IMHO when you do so, look at the process as a whole and then in its parts. See if you can make things flow better which could reduce your workload. Regardless I’ll be watching. I really appreciate your content.
Hi Troy I am glad you will not stop raising pigs. I think you are making a good decision to reset the way you are doing things now. We have changed the setup around here several times and will be making more changes as we go forward. The boar we received from you known as RT is still doing a great job. Hopefully, soon we will start making videos again.
Happy to hear that you're going to do a pig 101 kind of thing. I'm coming at it from a homestead perspective. Not commercial. I have ideas, but no experience. So it should be interesting.
We're registered breeders for Idaho Pasture Pigs and couldn't be happier with the breed. They're worth looking into in my opinion with the type of setup yall have
I have slowly converted my woodlot into silvopasture over the last three years. 2025 will be my second year with pigs in the woods. I like where you are going with this!
Well I need some Pig 101, Is like to see you geek out some, I did my first batch of feeder pigs(three of them) this year. They did well however feed cost was way higher than I thought it should be. Id like you to break that down as to how much you feed them , what I should be paying for feed, Id like to do a few next year trying to help my land with clearing it up and have better product just like to do it and stay within a reasonable budget.
Good day T. Did some research before..... And confirmed this week. Mister JS does not breed own piglets. He purchases weaned piglets. And Polyface brings out the pigness. Massively. In light of oen niggles. I did a few calcs as to the cost of keeping a sow. Got to about half the cost per weaner as opposed to purchased weaners. (I used Canadian commercial pig feed as a basis.) Farrowing. To me. Is the most crucial stage. I deem a boar only feasible with quite a few sows. AI. Best available genetics. On estrus 3 to 5 days after weaning. No matter how old the weaners are. Jordan Green. J&L Green Farms. Really has farrowing on pasture sorted out. Foldable farrowing huts. Infrastructure. A pleasure watching. Regards. South Africa.
We recently sent a sow to freezer camp that had turned to killing piglets. It’s an unfortunate thing having to reboot part or hall of the herd, but necessary at times. Recognizing the need to make a change instead of letting the status quo remain and hope it gets better can be tough on the farm sometimes.
How old were the sows when they had their last successful farrowing? FarmBuilder keeps 6-8 breeding sow groups together since they were piglets, then as they fail(no breeding, bad mother, bad piglets) they leave. When the group gets to be half original size, the remainder goes. Just trying to develop an estimate of how long sows last. P.S. Technically, what FarmBuilder is doing is deploying a Stochastic decision rule. (Using Stochastic in a sentence counts as a triple-nerd word score!)
problem I have is folks just dont seem interested in farm raised pigs...they would rather buy from the big stores and have no idea what they are eating
I am fan of the Mulefoot pig but it has some shortcomings so I am keeping just couple purebred Mulefoot and using AI to mix meat breeds for the piglets I need to raise and sell
Where is the link to your new sawmill channel?? Either just raise feeders you buy or start breeding registered idaho pasture pigs they are the way to go for selling meat and feeders.
@@RedToolHouse yep.. Those Idaho pasture pigs are the way to go. Folks pay a little better money for feeders They graze real well. Temperament of the kuny a typical butcher weight pig in a typical traditional pig and breader stock that gets not much bigger than a typical butcher pig so cost in feed is less plus you can put them out on pasture almost like a cow and they do eat a decent amount of hay as well. I done alot of research on top of seeing folks on RUclips and that's what I'm doing when ever I get to start. Might start with them as feeders if I can find them close by at the time and then move into registered breeding stock.
@@RedToolHouse cant seem to find one. We have an old flour/biscuit company but they stopped letting people buy from them years ago. Everyone else just resales from a feed producer.,,,and i buy from them cheaper but its not cheap enough to breed and barely enough to raise pigs even on pasture principles.

Thanks for “starting over “ Troy. I’m thinking about getting a few feeders and will definitely be watching 👍
I’ll still be here Troy. I think a “piggery reset” is a great idea.

I started watching this channel when I saw you sedate a pig with beer so you could give it a trim lol cheers!

RIP, Merida. She was the Queen of Pigs.
How about a link to your woodworking channel??
It pops up at the end of the video
@@RedToolHouse Found it, and now subscribed! Thanks
What do think about feeding pigs. cow grower ,rice meal , corn?
I am a newbie to raising pigs. I hear people talk about "boar taint", will that not be an issue when you process the boars?
I can't and won't eat any boar . We did had a boar castrated and we r still eating him .
problem I have is folks just dont seem interested in farm raised pigs...they would rather buy from the big stores and have no idea what they are eating
Thanks for being honest about your pigs.
Nice video.
??? have you considered rotating of breeding stock or tl the non rotating being part of the problem litter survival
Why not gravel instead of concrete for the corral?
Yum!
I am fan of the Mulefoot pig but it has some shortcomings so I am keeping just couple purebred Mulefoot and using AI to mix meat breeds for the piglets I need to raise and sell
Gotta go back to the red wattles
The AI for pigs Saves you the time, the labor for the boar maintenance.

FREEZER CAMP, FREEZER CAMP, FREEZER CAMP!!!🤣🤣🤣
i dont know where anyone is getting this cheap feed. Theres none of that saw dust looking feed in my area ...just pellet feed and its not cheap
Do you have a feed mill anywhere around? If you can find a mill that grinds their own, usually you can get a better price.
