I was one of the ones who was going to comment about sump pumps lol worth the investment IMO ESP if you want to finish the basement. Also before you re-drywall everything you could give it all a coat of kilz. They make stuff that has some kind of chemical that kills mildew and stuff! might be worth a look into!

NC coast here, plenty of black mold here, especially after hurricanes. Bleach doesn't kill black mold, but vinegar does!!!😊 So sorry for your troubles!!!🙏

You are absolutely right! Bleach removes the color only. White vinegar destroys the mold down to the roots. I hope people listen.

While FEMA IS BUILDING A CAMP THEY SAY TO BRING IN 700 fema TO
Help rescue people. They first need to make a place for Fema folks.
While N.C. needed help first. They have heavy gunned security guards.

I'm a surviver of Irene. Same like you I had about 2 -3 inches on two ground floor apartments. I had to cut out 12 -18 " of sheetrock out ALL the way around, took all the trim off, all the bottom cabinets and vanities out and replaced. If it got wet at all it molded, you must remove it because it is almost impossible to kill. I was professionally dried out and sprayed and I had to do the other stuff myself. We bucket bregaded the mud out of the dirt floor basement. ripped out all the hot air duct because the brand new furnace was destroyed and river water ran thru the duct. . $25,000 and a year later I was back up and running but I knew that there would be no mold for my tenants. However my house was not washed down the river so I was lucky and thankful. And no FEMA did not one thing for me but deliver a case of bottled water. Period.

Ok jason we had a similar problem any where there was water on the dry wall it will have to be removed at least 6 inches above the floor put fan in there and dehumidifier let that run until the stud wall is dry or get a moisture tester and it should not show moisture. Once it's dry rehang drywall plaster and. paint

Our basement has flooded twice. We had to remove most of the dry wall 6 inches up from the floor in any room the dry wall got wet. We had a company come in and they ran huge dehumidifiers for 5 days and used moisture meters to check to be sure it dried out. It took about 8 days for the meter to read the correct level.

I know this doesn't compare to what any of you guys in NC or FL went through, but when my water heater gave up the ghost and kept trying to refill itself and flooded my home I got a little paranoid and put everything in my spare room (storage) on furniture dolly's and 2x4's laid flat (nothing on the floor) to just give a little extra space for the water to go if it ever happens again, please God NO!!! The dolly's worked out well because now things are portable and I can load and unload that room as needed. I'm an artist so I have tons of tools and materials that I don't use all the time, but still want on hand. So, I store them in my spare room on dolly's for 'the next time'... Hang in there guys! I'm sure little and big things will show up around your homestead as things settle down and dry out, stay vigilant! Stay blessed!!!

Jason, I would definitely be very liberal with that spray stuff; toxic mold is no joke, especially with your health hx. So, so glad ya'll fared better than so many others. Our office flooded. The company came in and used a water tester on the drywall. They took off the baseboard, poked holes into the dry way, and had fans blowing into those holes first thing. Can then mist a bleach into the holes if needed but checking for water is key to how far up the drywall it went.

Finish basements are the worst carpeting furniture, the drywall . I saw one of my neighbors finished basement that got flooded after heavy snow storms , blizzards and the snow melted. This was in New England. I also had flooded basement but it wasn't finished it was concrete and we also had a sump pump it was only when the snow melted. It was easy cleanup and no mold.
We had so much snow melted that the sump pump couldn't keep up it happens up north .

Soooo....We pay a pretty penny for landfill dump stuff in our area. And the Feds are supposedly taking care of Helene debris for 6 months. I would be so tempted to take my Helene related landfill materials to a Helene debris pile yet to be picked up. While I might be tempted to take additional landfill stuff along for the ride, I certainly would have no moral dilemma over taking Helene related materials.

Have never had a basement, so I don't know all the ins and outs of preventing any water from getting into a basement. Friends who have a basement dug up the area all around the foundation and installed a water barrier under and up the foundation walls, as well as a French drain system to divert rainwater away from the foundation. But with massive flooding from Hurrican Helena I have not heard if those helped at all.
If these massive hurricanes with flooding become the norm it will be interesting to see what new products come on the market to help keep homes from flooding, as well as products to help prevent issues like mold.

If this ever happens again, once you get most of the standing water out, use towels, blankets, whatever you have to soak up small areas of slight puddles. Then turn fans on, by generators or battery, and have more than one dehumidifier. There are also moisture absorbers you can get at Lowe’s or Home Depot to keep on hand just in case. I had to use those after forgetting to close my car windows and it poured at night. 😖
