- This week I take advantage of a long slow drive back to the farm to complain about the insane amount of rain!! Its making farming very difficult!

Hi, I think we may get used to all this rain, clear pattern of increased rainfall each year for last 4...hotter air temp allow higher moisture content in atmosphere
You got the tractor serviced and the mechanics didn’t even top up the water in the radiator?

That's life, things are missed. I will bill them for the £2 bottle of water. 😅

Would you be tempted to put Maize into a field you sacrifice to graze early on in the season?
In Maine U.S.A. we’ve already had twice the precipitation as normal this year. I say precipitation instead of just rain because we usually have snow. A lot of snow. Not this year. And that hurts because we think of it as poor man’s fertilizer because over a winter it deposits a sizable amount of nitrogen on the ground which slowly gets released into thethawing soil in spring.

@@FarmTheoryNI it’s seriously not funny… we had snow today with heavy rain for overnight. It’s rained since the end of September. I’ve mountains of muck to spread. Lime needs to go out… if it isn’t dry most of April, first cut and turnout will be massively delayed. Seriously thinking of branching out to ducks and rice

@@FarmTheoryNI Basically. It cools better than water and won't freeze. You can damage the engine block when water freezes

we've got quite a low stocking rate so that might explain my line of thought here.......i think there are times when sowing fertiliser or certainly too much fertiliser can be a bad thing cos if this wet weather continues you kind of get too much grass by fertilising it heavily as you say with the fields so wet it's going to be a few weeks before its dry enough to turn out and 1st cut silage maybe later this year........i can remember some years ago having a really wet spring and there was no silage made until end of may early june and those that fertilised heavy had so much grass they couldnt get it through the twin rotor rake and also the grass had gone brown and rotted in the bottom

Very methodical planning and a good plan B in these current and dynamic times in the industry. I admire your good humour and optimism, nothing a problem to you. We could all do with a bit of humour to dispel the heavy clouds. Do you do your own reseeding or will you use a contractor. Thank you by the way.
It helps to have a sense of humour for sure. 😅 We do all the work for a reseed apart from sowing the grass seed. I want a seeder but they are really expensive?!

Last July there was to moon's if you have two moon's in July it will rain for a year so it has rained for 10 months so far
How much artificial potash are you applying per acre for silage ground with no slurry on it
it's 100kg of K first cut, assuming it gets not slurry.
What's the benefit of splitting your N applications on silage ground now in the wet?
At this point I will probably go on with one application if I can get some decent weather! Normally split it to spread risk.
@FarmTheoryNI So in a 'normal' yesr what applications are you aiming for? Slurry in late Feb, fert early March and again early April?

how do you manage with stones when reseeding
We roll them down with the power harrow roller and then a grassland heavy roller. No landlevelers or chain harrows to pull them up again.
Should get.leak fix cause alot bigger.problems when head over heated

If your puma is 19 speed then she’s probably a 40k eco. They run at lower revs in 19 gear. You can get them unlocked to rev out.

The 8s is so much better, the cab is huge. Puma is still a great tractor but is 15 years old!!

BKT wouldn't be the best, Kleber far better tyre for roadwork and super on soft ground, You get what you pay for at the end of the day.
I will Google them! Finding it hard to pick tyres on facts. Bkt carry most weight for the pressure.
Bkt good tyre, walmsleys give the tractor a real good service when they didn’t notice a water leak!!

Bad weather means no work to do on a farm.. news to me
It is setting a priority. If I had the weather, priority is the farm, for now, I can prioritise tech.
