  • Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (Out of the depths I cry to thee) Op. 135a No. 4 by Max Reger (1873-1916) played on the 1926 Magnusson organ in By Church, Avesta, Sweden. The organ has some pipe material, as well as the façade, from the previous 1861 Ek organ.

Dark, mysterious, and very, very quiet…🌑 "From deep affliction I cry out to you"…😫 The German word literally means 'I scream', but ironically, Reger prescribes this piece to be played very soft, pianissimo and pianississimo.🤫 The softest string stops that I’m using in the By Church organ are almost quieter than the mechanical noises made by the organ…! The original hymn itself was written by Martin Luther, based on Psalm 130 from the Bible, 'Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, o Lord'. I hope though, that in the shimmer of these string stops there is a ray of hope!🙏
