@@CuzImAzzI never thought I would see a song about the crisis of social apathy being described as "shallow", but here we are I guess. What made you think of the song as shallow? @@CuzImAzz I can kind of see your point. But this song has always spoken to me of the importance of being present in your life, and caring about society. The line "American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing" really hits hardest for me, society places so much value on intrinsically worthless things (no hate on Van Gogh, but I think even he would disapprove of the amount of money exchanged for one of his paintings) whereas even human life is not valued as much as the almighty dollar.

There are so many people here on RUclips searching for music like this. People who will never hear. "And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow."
When the darkness gets you, these lyrics become more poignant. I’m ok right now, but I’ve been to the dark place. If you’re in that dark place right now, just hold on and know that it gets better. You might feel like you’re the only one going through it. You’re not. Don’t act so special! Tell a loved one or friend how you feel. It’s ok not to be ok.
I too was in that dark place. And in the depths of despair, my Saviour Jesus Christ, showed Himself to me. Hope itself is like a star - not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity. The Lord's mercy often rides to the door of our heart upon the black horse of affliction. John 3:16-18 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
The tricky part of sinking into the blackness is that it shackles you, throws a gag round your mouth, and iron bands around your heart. When you are down in the darkness, it is the hardest time to open up to someone.
When I first heard this song I was 19. It opened something inside me only music can do. A few years later I was on stage playing my own songs with a band on my acoustic guitar. I'm still playing now and 52. It's been a long time old friend see you soon x

First heard this whilst living in Germany in early 1990. In those days, a lot of early afternoon German TV revolved around educational programmes. Vividly remember one show dissecting the lyrics, and it moved me deeply then. The song stands up to scrutiny 30+ years later as a testament to human inertia in the face of monotony and corruption.

Best "pointlessness of life" song ever... And hearing the lyrics now, whilst technology has changed a few things ("secretaries turn off typewriters" would be "secretaries close down their laptops" or something similar now, 35 years on), we still sing along like before regardless... The more things change, the more they stay the same...
As said, this should be fully recognised as a statement of fact at the time that sadly remains true. Given we are now old and remember it we quote this song at work on a weekly basis - doped white mice, martians in the car park and the needle returning. The question is whether anyone is listening any more than then.
Closed circuit cameras in department stores, shoot the same movie everyday. And the stars of these film neither die or get old, they survive constant action replay. Brilliant, one of the best Albums to come out of Scotland. Can't believe this was the 80's, albeit late 80's, like the Stone roses. Makes my teenage years even better , go you Dancer 🤘
The best Scottish Band of all time in my opinion, Justin Currie was the finest songwriter/wordsmith of his generation without doubt, Iain Harvie on lead guitar was fantastic and the rest of the band were utterly brilliant on their chosen instruments…just stellar!
One of the best groups ever. Their song ¨ Put the music back `` tragically foresaw the end to real pop music. Thank you . I cry at this unbelievable loss to our music culture
One of my very favourite songs ever. Can't believe this is almost 30 years old. From an era before the internet and when even mobile phones were an expensive rarity. Wonderful days!!
This really is an 80's classic. The lyrics are an absolute masterclass and so true of the reality and irony of life. Timeless words and sad that the human race doesn't always learn to change for the better and where possible, for the benefit of our brothers and sisters.
Chris Evans played this on the R1 Breakfast show. When it finished he said something like "After the 7.30 news I am supposed to come back with (some manufactuerd pop hit)". He came back from the news and cued this back in. I imagine he got a rocket for that, but We'll Played Chris.
Del amitri Nev got the recognition he deserved for the music he sings is out of this world...1989 I was 17....I can't believe how fast the years hav gone! who's listening in 2022?
Remember when secretaries still shut off something called typewriters ? No, not the keyboard on yer phones... Meh, all this will be forgotten as soon as next thing comes along, some mess resulting from brxit, for those lving in UK. To the rest of us, t will be long gone, like the days people had to go down London subway shelters to hide from an actual War
Heard this today during my mind numbing traipse around Tesco (other supermarkets are available). It struck me as an apt tune in the circumstances. Brilliant words as per usual from Justin.
Del Amitri was the first band I saw live in about 1991 and I had the pleasure of seeing them again last year in Hammersmith. They are still as wonderful as ever and it was so amazing to hear all their fantastic hits sung live again.

@@christinecumiskey5304 🤣💯
Me too, but I'm not from Manchester 😜
Lol, am from Salford but we are all Greater Manchester now which annoys Salfordians :). I love that line in this song, in fact I loved this group and their music at the time.
The words in this song are so true to life today
In a world of corruption, songs like this keep us real.
From the womb.
"They'll burn down the synagogues at six o' clock and we;ll all go along like before". Very thought provoking and slightly terrifying. Wonderful lyrics.
WTF?
exactly what i thought
yes, complaints about repetitive tv and acquisitions of art by american businessmen always eventually turn into attempted genocide. thanks for accidentally exposing how fucking retarded this song is
please don't take it there.
can't we just enjoy the song?
Not as thought provoking as "While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing. ....."
Great song! It's a shame this band is so underrated...
Justin's song writing no words, he simply is a Genius, he never got the recognition, still listen to him as a solo artist.
1989 till now : nothing has changed : we will all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.
Was so moved by this song in 89
I was 19....
Powerful message and wonderful words
I thought the world was ending
Then I played Del Amitri Let’s kiss this thing goodbye
Then I felt better cos I went to Italy for 4 months in the summer
Good days
Better nights
Summer 90...
Always Amore❤️🥺
Best "pointlessness of life" song ever... And hearing the lyrics now, whilst technology has changed a few things ("secretaries turn off typewriters" would be "secretaries close down their laptops" or something similar now, 35 years on), we still sing along like before regardless... The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Wow! How beautiful is Justin Currie in this video! 💙 Great song....great band 👌
this is the best song you have never heard
i wouldn't go that far
Lyrically and musically brilliant.
As said, this should be fully recognised as a statement of fact at the time that sadly remains true. Given we are now old and remember it we quote this song at work on a weekly basis - doped white mice, martians in the car park and the needle returning. The question is whether anyone is listening any more than then.
"Bread and circuses"
A lyrical masterpiece 👍
I have always loved this song. It sums up the banality of life perfectly.
One of the best groups ever. Their song ¨ Put the music back `` tragically foresaw the end to real pop music. Thank you . I cry at this unbelievable loss to our music culture
Listening to the lyrics, this song could have been written today.
Crazy that nothing changed over the last 30+ years.
"Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there" almost impossible for anyone born after 1975 to comprehend....😯
33 years and nothing has changed
The world has got a lot worse
I’d forgotten what a perfect song this was!
One of my very favourite songs ever. Can't believe this is almost 30 years old. From an era before the internet and when even mobile phones were an expensive rarity. Wonderful days!!
If Del Amitri was about about in the the 16th they would be classed as poets today.
Top quality Scottish talent ❤️
"And we'll be in lockdown tonight, and lockdown tomorrow"
How near you are to the truth with that statement friend
Brilliant concurrent analogy
But things will be better tomorrow when it comes it’s up to us
'' ...And we'll ALL be in lockdown tonight and lockdown tomorrow... ''
Some songs are timeless
The lyrics in this song are timeless. More relevant today for sure. Perfect song.
Had RUclips been around in the 80's this timeless classic would have the millions of clicks that it rightly deserves
Heard this today during my mind numbing traipse around Tesco (other supermarkets are available). It struck me as an apt tune in the circumstances. Brilliant words as per usual from Justin.
Some of the best lyrics written.
Seeing him tonight. Forgot how many great records they made.
Del Amitri was the first band I saw live in about 1991 and I had the pleasure of seeing them again last year in Hammersmith. They are still as wonderful as ever and it was so amazing to hear all their fantastic hits sung live again.
What a class song. Social commentary way ahead of it's time.
435 dislikes - seriously - this is sheer genius no matter how long ago it was recorded - the power of a great song to move you no matter whem
I agree fabulous song.
Clueless millennials I'd guess
435 people who don't understand what life is 😭😭
More apt today, we dont learn.
Driving through the night I listen to ‘Tremelo’ and your new challenges Justin. Please know that your beautiful voice and passionate and emotional vocal colours have lifted me and many to think and to smile with joy. Thank you Dear Justin and Friends and Family. Enjoy every moment of living in the moment 🙏💚
When you haven't heard a track in years and it pops up. Such a beautiful track ❤
The whole album is beautiful another underrated Scottish band ,deacon blue as well
Have you tried big country?
I agree, and the same thing is true for Always The Last To Know.
Totally brilliant, a forgotten masterpiece 🥰 moving and sadly prothetic.♥️😭
One of the BEST SONGS ever written!
This song is poetry , great imagery and cadence . Brilliant
Nothing.., except this brilliant song..
Loved it then love it now. True then true now. Masterpiece
One of the greatest songs ever written. Still playing in 2020!
still 3022
2022
Lovely pop song.
Perfect length.
Hit many key points in such a short time.
While business men snap up Van Gogh's for the price of a Hospital wing!!!
Justin; take a bow Son!!
I met these guys in Dallas, Texas, in 1989, and now they are coming to my current home in Australia! Hope I can meet them again. Love you still
This guy must be a regular over at 4chan. :)
Classic song,never ages
Never has this song been more relevant.
What a epic tune that sound so current after 30 years !!sign of a good song..👍
