I hope this becomes an official subclass so that I can roleplay a Tabaxi with fleas.
THIS
Nice!
Better with a swarm of mice
@@jeohranalfhir8366 what?
make it an Urchin and it's the ultimate street cat
Just imagine this:
The ranger that is three goblins in a trench coat.
My first thought: Fireflies
Internet: Finally, I can make a crazy cat lady!
My first thought was Disney's Cinderella withe her mouse/bird minions
The rat piper farie boy who made the pipes of the sewers?
Again aint nobody thinking of the *🅱️ees* ?
For the longest time warlock and druid was the Only two options for an bee mage
i am thinking of a ramger that walks around in a thick fur coat, but the plot twist is that the coat is entirely made of living ferrets that scatter once initiative is rolled.
@@TheScarvig Anytime someone makes a bad pun the coat starts quivering or a random head pops out and hisses.
Step 1: Play a female Ranger
Step 2: Pick Swarmkeeper
Step 3: Make your swarm squirrels.
Step 4: Be unbeatable
But seriously, this subclass kind of makes me want to play one, which is the best thing you can say about any subclass.
Unearthed arcana has had a few overpowered ideas in the past but this one is near perfect. I really hope to see these in a book
Honestly for ranger it’s underpowered
Johnny Vitell have you looked at beast master? I think it’s pretty good maybe could do slightly more damage on some abilities but other than that I think it’s one of the better ranger subclasses
noah thehoneyboy do you mean UA beast master? If you’re talking about beast master from the players handbook that’s the weakest class in the game, so this should be way better than that
Johnny Vitell I think swarm keeper is better than both.
As a Ranger player, I would be happy playing this as it stands. It looks really fun.
Design-wise, they've put more work into how it scales, which is nice. The new knobs are good innovations.
My first thought is a Nicolas Cage character, whom has become one with the bees. But then...
Warforged + Swarmkeeper = Robot with nanomachines.
C'mon, that's too cool to pass up.
NANOMACHINES, SON!!!
Oooh I
love that idea
@@danielgordon84 you beat me to it
How about an Unseelie Court Eladrin, whose swarm changes with her mood!
double that with the Eladrin.
Oh?
Butterflies in Spring
June Bugs in Summer
Ladybugs in Autumn
Mice in Winter?
All I can imagine after reading this is having a bunch of Kodama (Tree Spirits from the movie Princess Mononoke) just climbing on you, sitting on your shoulders, running around, doing that kinda creepy head rattle thing... really like this Subclass.
Chwingas ftom Chult?
I just want to make an old-school Disney princess character with this class now...
Multiclass with Bard.
I mean, there are many ways to think of the happiest things . . .
You should go with shephard druid if that's the case
Haha I came here to post this, but knew in my heart it had already been posted.
I was just thinking this is Snow White
I am currently imagining a ranger using Ghibli soot sprites.
All I can imagine after hearing about this class is having a bunch of Kodama (Tree Spirits from the movie Princess Mononoke) just climbing on you, sitting on your shoulders, running around, doing that kinda creepy head rattle thing... really like this Subclass.
Great minds think alike.
I see that you are also a man of taste. *chef kiss*
What's this? A dnd campaign woefully underpopulated by bees? A large influx of bees ought to fix that!
BEEEEEEEEEES!
Hello BEES!
Nick Cage: "NOT THE BEES!!"
"WHATS THIS A WHOLESOME FAMILY PICNIC? THE ADDITION OF BEES SHOULD HELP THINGS!"
Bees would be lovely, since there's all kinds of old folklore about them being connected to the spirit world as it is. :D All those things like telling the bees when someone in the house is born or gets married or dies, or that a new beekeeper must formally introduce themselves to a hive and ask for their acceptance or risk the bees deserting the hive. ^^
Hey Nicky! Cover Winkler in bees!
Bees. My God.
Player: "I want to be a naruto character."
Me: "Sure. Monks are pretty cool. Wait. On second thought..."
Spends next 3 hours making Shino Aburame for D&D
Glad I'm not the only one who sees how 5e can be used to play Naruto. 😂🤣
Choji is a Giant Soul Sorcerer, Ino is an Enchanter/Necromancer depending on how you look at it.
Neji and Hinata are both Open Hand monks, Rock Lee's is a Drunken style monk.
Kiba and Akimaru are a Beast Master Ranger/Druid Multiclass.
Most Naruto builds require multiclassing though.
Well, if you want to play Shino from Naruto as a D&D character, here you go.
This is interesting, but no infestation cantrip?
Anyways, this is a perfect third option for an "bee mage" along with druid, warlock and blood hunter
defenseive kobra holy balls this NEEDS the infestation cantrip and insect swarm spells
@@reubenfromow4854 IKR
Am playing an blood hunter with a dryad patron who wears an dress made out of a beehive (instead of the typical dryad dress of nothing)
But it’s a really weak cantrip
Johnny Vitell yes but it’s bees tho
The Only reason i can see is perhaps it has too narrow of an flavor to fit the infinitly reflavorable swarm keeper, and shut up Johnny it is cool
I really love the concept of this subclass, and I think you can tell it obviously started and evolved from a good place (which lead to a strong design overall).
My favorite piece to this, and something that I think may be overlooked, is the use of spell slots to fuel features for the Ranger! I love this idea, because it’s something I felt needed to be addressed with the Ranger. While it’s issues span over multiple levels of gameplay, the specific one I have always noticed is the prevalence of multiclassing. The class really gives the player no reason to stay Ranger vs going Rogue the back half. The higher level spells aren’t that useful (so most players are fine with stopping at 3rd), Vanish is a piece of Cunning Action, and Feral Senses and Foe Slayer aren’t as useful as something like Sneak Attack, Uncanny Dodge, and Evasion.
I really like them kind of addressing this. Better features at 11 and 15, and the ability to fuel stronger abilities with spell slots is a great strategy.
Big Worm vibes from this one, especially if you ignore the "nature spirits" part and just have them be bugs.
God killing 101
1. Play female swarm keeper
2. BEEEEEES!
3. ???
4. Profit
I can now have the superpower I've always wanted: to control a swarm of hummingbirds with my mind.
I love both to watch Jeremy passionately explaining things as well as Todd's passionate nodding.
When I read about the Swarmkeeper playtest option, I immediately thought about Snow White (particularly as she appears in Shrek 3). Just imagine a kickass princess with a swarm of tiny birds, rabbits, and squirrels. Could be very fun to play.
Doctor Bees, sure, but also the pigeon lady from Home Alone 2.
I've been homebrewing a warlock subclass ever since throne of eldraine and Piper of the swarm came out I was almost done with it when my ranger sent me this...
I can finally make a magical Beekeeper and destroy my enemies!
In the distance a Nick Cage is screaming in agony!
I'm loving this because with a pinch of flavour and taking the magic initiate feat with variant human it means that whenever I cast eldritch blast it's not some boring ol' beam of energy that's hurting my enemies but rather a small portion of my massive swarm of velociraptors going to town on their legs.
Will be playing a Tortle Swarmkeeper soon. Can’t wait to strike fear into enemies with a swarm of angry geese
Go Aarakocra, be one with the flock. Then realize that an intelligent swarm of geese is a decent idea for a BBEG.
Cloistered scholar swarm keeper ranger. Be a human.
DR. BEES
Be that, but a fascist.
THE SWARM (from Marvel comics).
The Swarm Keeper is a ton of tiny beastmasters in a trenchcoat.
Except they're not terrible in every way
The new beastmaster is actually pretty cool tho
Ranger of Elistriee with a swarm of spiders.
I guess i can make squirrel girl now lol
That's essentially my friend's character, he's. O'Reilly III, an Outlander raised by squirrels instead of wolves. He's the squirrel King.
monk/ranger?
Urchin Background: Gets a pet rat.
Little did they know that this was just the beggining of the fabled "Rat King"...
Or just go full "Dracula Untold" and become a ranger who can conjure a swarm of bats.
Using elements instead of a swarm sounds really cool. Like imagine the swarm is rocks. Boom! Earthbender. Same with air. It could be really cool to have a ranger with control of the wind around them. All the abilities work with it too
I was thinking of White Moths, Bees, Ravens, mainly things that could fly.
Just the thought of having a constant swarm of White Moths is awesome.
I have never wanted to play a ranger more than I do now! I'm thinking a Corvo (Dishonored) type multiclassed with a shadow monk or assassin rogue.
The teleport feature of Scuttling Eyes was inspired by Dishonored's possession power. Good catch! :D
That's so good. Use your swarm to make shadows to jump from.
Can we bring back the Swarm Druid? I love the concept of just melting into a million bugs and moving into enemy spaces and stuff.
*shakes jar of bees in excitement*
gonna make one who contacted the spirits of her dead aviary. her swarm is a whole bunch of owls that died in an avalance along with her. hope my dm allows it.
If you were to go with bees, you'd be a Ranger-Apiarist, or a Rapiarist.
-Tobias Funke, probably
Swarm of Honey Badgers.
Itd be cool to play a pied piper type ranger with a swarm of rats
multiclass bard
If you go the cutesy route, you have a Disney Princess.
Just thought this was gonna be a beekeeper subclass, now that's what I actually want to play.
Would Serpico and his wind spirit cloak/sword from the Berserk manga work with this class?
Swarmkeeper Ranger with bee, wasp or scorpion swarms. This is a thing of nightmares...
I really love this concept! I can’t wait until this new book cones out
The recent AL gelatenous cube option of find familiar uses an Oblex spawn... Variant Human taking Ritual Caster (Wizard) to cast Find Familiar - Oblex Spawn and theme the whole swarm around Oblex is too creepy. His secret backstory was he remembers being consumed... But not much else. Sometimes he has memories that he's pretty sure weren't his either... From there I'm handing it over to the DM to write into his story. Excited to use creepy Oblex lore in the swarm concept and feel still up to par mechanically.
Can Batman have Ranger: Swarmkeeper subclass, for bats??
I am one of the 5 people that liked the Seeker in 4e. Good to have something back that even remotely resembles it.
Nice to see you out of Hillhearst, Flabber!
It was a spooky timeshare I live in a retirement home in florida but I keep escaping.
I love the concept and pretty much the presentation, just two things though:
1) Make the agitated swarm deal 1d8 instead of 1d6, it's just a die size but can make the difference.
2) Up the damage your swarm can deal and the hp it can heal. I would honestly go as far as either 8d6 or 6d8 and you heal half the total if a creature takes any damage. It is your 15th level feature and you can't to so again until you take a long rest or you expend a 4th or 5th spell slot.
P.S. And fix the ranger as a class, PLEASE.
You would not believe your eyes.
If I attacked with ten million fireflies.
I tried to make this subclass happen with the Shadow Sorcerer. So happy its in the game now
Ranger/necromancer multiclass with centipedes crawling all over him. Creepy AF
YES, or maybe even carrion beetles or maggots!
It’s cool and creative that’s what it is! Great job on this one! An interesting ranger, downloaded it earlier; nice!
1) An elf who looks and acts like a fairy tale princess, complete with a swarm of woodland creatures (like Cinderella). Either mice, or a flock of colorful songbirds that act as living decorations. Very extroverted and friendly and chipper, and doesn't understand why people are freaked out by her animal friends.
2) An Egyptian-style figure in a cloak and head wrap, who is one with a swarm of scarab beetles. Frequently silent save when delivering cryptic commentary, he was one of an ancestral lineage of tomb defenders, until an artifact was stolen from the tomb, prompting him to go searching for it as an adventurer.
3) A Yuan-ti Pureblood snake charmer whose long robes hide a collection of coiling serpents. Was once the guardian of a Yuan-ti cult dedicated to a dark snake god, until the cult was broken up and scattered. Now he seeks to reconstitute the cult elsewhere, adventuring for the requisite money and connections. Except not all of his former compatriots appreciate his efforts, arising over differences in doctrine.
4) Squirrel Girl, as a DnD character. Fights crime, and has a rivalry with giants and aberrations.
5) A crazy cat lady, who throws cats at people and mutters to herself. A Hermit who has become eccentric in her long absence from polite society. Says she came from the moon - where cats reign supreme - but she's probably just crazy. Probably.
6) A soldier in service to a Queen, who is covered by the bees for which the queendom is known for (they make the best honey). Clad in black and yellow striped armor and coat, she wields a pair of scimitars made of glass-steel and patterned like the wings of an insect (as well as a selection of darts, shaped like stingers). Was sent to hunt down an enemy of the crown, called simply "The Hornet". While possessed of military efficiency and professionalism, she sometimes gets carried away; believing that no FUBAR situation cannot be improved by liberal application of BEES.
7) A river-dwelling Triton from a jungle (perhaps a Merfolk on the plane of Ixalan), who surrounds himself with a school of piranha. Until now kept the waterways safe for native peoples, and worked to waylay or mislead invaders or presumptuous explorers. Sometimes even acting as a guide, to lead such people on wild goose chases for secret cities filled with wealth, that don't actually exist (that way, they don't find the actually secret, wealth filled cities). Now, though, he's got himself entangled in the politics and nonsense of foreigners and land-dwellers, more so than he would have liked.
Now I want to play a herald of Kyuss with this.
So I can play as Skitter? Nice.
I need a beekeeping ranger who brews mead from his Swarm's honey...probably a surface dwarf lol
Stephen Colbert needs to multiclass so he can get an army of Erics.
Is there a limit on how many species a Swarmkeeper can have in his Swarm?
So like a cat lady dual wielding knitting needles?
The underlying Ranger part of Swarmkeeper Ranger feels like it ends on a rather flat note with _Foe Slayer_, and for my own character I've proposed a replacement capstone to suit my growing hive of glowbugs, inelegantly defined as; Storm of Minions + Gaseous Form as a Reaction. For the duration you may swap corporeal or incorporeal as part of any action, up to one minute or until the Storm of Minions is dispelled. Once per Long Rest or use a 5th level spell slot, using its own slot separate from SoM.
Corporeal and a feat lets you react to something? go incorporeal. Incoming battle axe? Dissolve into spirits. Sky blotted out by arrows? No big deal.
Radagast the brown?
Oh yeah.
Perfect class for the Urban Ranger. If this goes into a book you gotta add Urban as an option for preferred terrain.
Aren’t velociraptors classed as tiny/small?
They are tiny, the perfect size.
And it works even better with the Revised Ranger.
Only way I ranger is UA revised or homebrew!
In a jungle campaign. Want a swarm of snakes for the ranger.
When I played in Strahd, didn't have a ranger, but I would have liked bats or ravens. Our bard thought he was a swarm keeper, and played the pied piper with some rats.
velociraptor are tiny beasts
Nice!
oh man a swarm ranger multi-classed the spore druid would be awesome
these newest three subclasses are pretty damn awesome!!
*You can be Shino now*
Fighting Dreamers!!!
Literally could play Squirrel Girl with a multiclass dip or two.
Feels a tiny bit typical, but that’s fine as per usual. A swarm of army ants is perfect because they’re nomadic, and big beetle bois would be cool. I just wish the insects had more of a physical presence, but action economy and all that jazz,
Sounds like the perfect subclass for a kobold.
A Dragonborn that has made friends with a bunch of pseudodragons and faerie dragons
Can't wait to play Captain Olimar, this'll be awesome
Finally I can make Squirrel Girl in DnD
Disney princess, with a swarm of woodland beings :)))
Naruto's shino basically
Now I want to reflavour the spirit swarm as ancestors' souls for a tribal, shamanistic ranger o_o (maybe multiclassing into a death domain cleric or another class that has access to necromancy)
Rip Van Winkie a fey lost Ranger Swarmkeeper / Archfey Warlock, Sprites galore! :P Maybe with Magic Initiate ("Mending, Message, Unseen Servant")
Be fun to play.
Can't wait to play female dark elf worshiper of Lolth Swarmkeeper Ranger with an army of tiny spiders crawling all over her. Just need to get over my fear of spiders first lol.
Bee's, you are the king of queen of their swarm.
So what happened the alternate features mearls was working on?
Damnnnn, this is a cool as class don’t get me wrong, but I was expecting a insect themed subclass ):
Though I can most certainly see
re-flavoring this being incredibly eas
Edit: oh man! It seems like they definitely had that in mind aswell as much more, this is one of the better UA subclasses in a while!
Can we please talk about how the new lighting for Tod makes him look like a god damn evil emperor I would follow into the most dire mortal danger? Lol
He's becoming Mordenkainen more and more each day
Normal people: "now I can use bees and create sparkly firefly spells."
Me, an intellectual: "Great I can be Zouken and drain people's life force with a swarm of Crest worms! "
I just want to be a ranger with a bunch of pixies sworming around me
can you tell me why when you make a item you self you can't use the spell (from players handbook page 255 if i remember correct.) Lighting Arrow. i can use lighting bolt. acis arrow and so on but Lighting Arrow doesn't exist. but when i go to spells it is show under spells ?
Feels very druidic too, the line between druid and ranger is kinda blurry
This feels more like a Druid subclass than a Ranger archetype.
My first thought: Nac Mac Feagle!
Anyone?
Nickolas Cage would be proud.
We have the B E E S .
What about spirites
The idea evolved from controlling swarms of beasts, but honestly nothing at all breaks if you make the spirits look like anything you want, including actual little faeries. Go for it!
This is pretty much Peter Pan.
THIS LOOKS LIKE A SUBCLASS FOR DOCTOR BEES!
Giant Insect on the swarm
I instantly thought beekeeper
“A ranger who has bonded with a swarm of” RATS “nature spirits” : (
“The swarm can look like whatever you want” :DDD AND WE’RE BACK
You realize the logistical issues of carrying a swarm of rats wherever you go right? The food bill alone would bankrupt the poor ranger.
Why do I want to throw an Ilithid swarmkeeper with a cranium rat Swarm at my players now? 3XD
@@invaderzam technically they're fae spirits so they might not have to actually eat, or feed them your enemies. Works out the same either way really. XD
I dig this. I can make a Talion.
It's Cinderella... Just say it
By night he becomes DR BEES
