So many opportunities... Lawyer...Personal Trainer...Storyteller...Merchant...Diplomat...Pacifist... It's a good "smooth-talker" build that is great for social activity. Like Crawford has stated previously, it's balanced for social aspects, and less geared for combat. A combat-oriented bard with a similar emphasis on spoken word, however...well, that tickles my interest a little bit. Harkening back to "Elder Scrolls: Skyrim"...you could homebrew a bard who "shouts" magical spells. In "Pillars of Eternity", they have a bard-esque class called "chanters" who shout old phrases from folk tales that evoke powerful spells and effects. I'd love such a bard in D&D...a more blasty bard, who may not use weapons, but channels immense power through their spoken word. You could call the use of Bardic Inspirations "Roars", and they could either inflict a magical buff to allies, or a certain debuff to enemies...shout people around the battlefield...have them cower in place as they are stricken with fear...give an ally a bonus action "Dash" effect...fun stuff like that. Lore-wise, maybe when these bards begin telling stories, those that hear them begin to see visions of those old tales happening before their very eyes...maybe their voices are so powerful and influential, some have to be careful when they speak. Maybe let them had their Charisma modifier to "Vicious Mockery", or give them a long-rest use of "Sending"...interesting things like that.
I low-key thought my Public speaking class was a bard tutoring class and now I get a bard that does that! I love this class I can't wait to see it in a book ♥️♥️♥️
I was just saying to myself the other day how Calm Emotions is an underutilized spell. A similar (but less versatile) spell in pathfinder is practically a must have for bards.
I have made a bard designed to get as much out of the College of Eloquence as possible. I call him the Charismancer. His Charisma is capped out, he has proficiency or expertise in every social skill, and while he's not super strong, he's very dexterous *just in case* he cannot talk his way out of trouble.
Just want to say thanks for these videos! Hearing your ideas about cool scenes you can create with a subclass often is what gets me interested in playing them!
I love this bard!!! It’s so useful for making noble diplomat bards. My favourite is part is the ability to communicate with other creatures in so many languages! Communication is such an important thing, but languages are hard to collect all of them. The calm emotions part is awesome. 👏 it’s one of my favourite spells. Be a great way to play a pacifist character. Personally my favourite bard class, so helpful, such a great support setup. I’m loving all these references to Irish myth, lately. I want to run a faewild campaign now. I totally imagine a bard whose fallen for a Leanan Sidhe, destined for a tragic end but wants to make difference in life before they leave it. Or in as figure from Greek myths, the hero Orpheus performing their way through Avernus out to rescue their loved one’s soul, lulling even the most monstrous of foes to peace. Simply awesome flavour & design for a bard.
I would love if this went even further. Something akin to the awaken spell. A Bard who knows the secret name of all things. To utter the name is to awaken it, to talk to it. To ask of it a favor.
I want to use this to make a Bard that's about Intimidation, but is all talk. Enemy: "Alright, you know the drill, your money or your life." Bard: *Casts Calm Emotions, uses Bonus Action to use Universal Speech* "Leave." Enemy: "... I, uh, just remembered, I left my, uh, oven on, a-at the dentist's office, yeah. Better go fix that." Bard: "Good idea."
I want to make a Warframe that only uses one word sentences that are just somehow bewilderingly convincing. Huge fight going on and a lone robot comes to the fight and simply says "Stop." and everyone does. The metallic-man then says "Follow." and everyone does. The Warframe then says "Jump." and everyone does. -Pitfall trap "Die." And everyone does.
Eloquence Bard is awsome. Where Lore feels like it takes from wizards (abjuration mostly due to how good they are at counterspells and dispells) + rogue skill monkeying Eloquence really pushes the power of Charisma / Bardic Inspiration. Love it.
Gonna need to use that high level Magical Secret feature to get Counterspell. Cast it by shouting "OBJECTION!" It's a concept I had for an Abjuration Wizard, but this is good too.
Revisiting after the official release in the "Theros" sourcebook: Some things changed; some things stayed the same... ...but all of it was good. Damn good.
came here after finding it in D&D Beyond. making a fierna tiefling bardlock with this and archfay warlock. reminds me of the beguiler from 3.5's players handbook 2.
My home campaign setting is essentially a fantasy take on the Ancient Mediterranean, particularly Rome. This has scheming senator, or populist consul, written all over it!
Ok now can we get the Bard College of Dirgesinger....this is the Goth Dark Bard kinda Lestat like from the movie queen of the damned in style it was awesome from D&D 3ed
My only concern with this class is like I feel it requires immense flavor and RP. For other types of bards, I'm happy to gloss over that they play a little jingle or riff which a certain emotional feel planted into it. For this though, an off hand mention won't cut it. You're almost required to come up with something eloquent and new to say EVERY time you use a class feature. "It intrinsically follows that if an inherent quality of dead people is an inability of aerial auto-mobility and if said quality should also be ascribed to you, then it follows that you, my good sir, is indeed dead!" only works so many times before it gets boring.
Oh my Gods yes ,my character would suddenly decided to focus on increasing her charisma through overcoming her social awkwardness fear of public speaking just so she join the Bardic college of Puns and a few other Bardic colleges if the Pun college was a thing.
If that bardic inspiration die is passed along I would assume it doesn't get the same effect of lasting until success and passing to another character? I'm liking the new approach using speech and skill talents for this. * edit - I realize it says, "You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest." So can it bounce 4 times with a 4 modifier (18charisma)?
Okay they've perfected the Mediator class from Final Fantasy Tactics. Dragoon is next WotC. I'm expecting a fighter subclass that specializes in full plate armor, polearms, and has a half mile long jump distance that allows them to leap into the clouds and come down spear first on an enemy 1d4 rounds later for 6d8 piercing damage. And before anyone cries "But what about teh balancez!" the jumping is obviously going to scale with level until the fighter only gets to do that 6d8 5 levels after the casters get fireball.
Really love seeing new subclasses released for the classes. Any chance we will see a Rogue subclass? Maybe one kinda like the Shadow Dancer from Pathfinder? Calling on the essence of the Shadowfell to become more wrath-like and move through the darkness like a Shadow Monk or Shadow Sorcerer. Mostly asking so I can import my first Pathfinder character :P
This brings up one thing that has bothered the crap out of me with Bards. It's that they are the jack of all trades, yet your magic focus is always a musical instrument. Shouldn't bards be able to chose a tool proficiency (Disguise kits, paint sets, forgery kit, instruments, gambler items, etc.) and chose a item related to the tool proficiency (within reason like a mask, brush, pen, drum, dice, etc.) having what they chose be the focus or if they don't chose a tool have their voice or themselves have magical control like sorcerers? So instead of the magic being a birthright, uncontrollable (To a degree) force, or whatever; have what bards use is effectively a slightly weaker, more controllable version of weave manipulation; people that have found a way to use the weave though force of will and determination having it translating to having a strong charismatic or inspiring presence. (I could make this longer but I don't like ranting, so I'll end this here. Just some ideas)
ittyandpocky Normally if you multiclass which is fine and a component pouch is more for like “I got the ingredients right here” rather then using one item that describes the character’s personality.
This seems a bit like it's taking most things the party face would be attempting to do anyway and giving it concrete rulesets and allowing the use of Bardic Inspiration
This brings to mind the idea of a Bardix Philosopher, which in turn brings to mind the idea of pretty much D&D Diogenes. I am very much looking forward to seeing this subclass get published so i can play as a cynic, dirty philosophical spellcaster.
So is anyone getting some Phoenix Wright from this? "The feral barbarian chieftain raises his greatsword overhead, ready to split you in half!" "I yell 'OBJECTION'! Forcing him to do a wisdom roll." "God damn it Bill, that isn't how that works!"
I have trouble seeing the PCs walk away after a successful Calm Emotions. It only lasts up one minute, and any emotions and hostilities return after it ends. So all I can see is the PCs getting a head start.

This was exactly my thinking when reading the UA. Eloquence Bard is a Greek philosopher, given magical powers.

Socrates? No.

Alkibiades? Most definitely.
