    In the episode "Ariel", when Jayne tries to get the reward for River and Simon, Mal has to "forgive" Jayne. He knows who Jayne is, he got Jayne on the ship by paying him more money than the crew he used to work for, so Mal totally knows what drives Jayne. But when Jayne asks that Mal make up a story about why he's gone, I think Mal sees there is a positive growth that has happened with Jayne. Instead of pleading for his life, Jayne just accepts that Mal will let him die, but he doesn't want people he's started to care about to think badly of him. Just my 2 cents.

    I love at the end of the episode “Safe” when Mal says without hesitation that he came back for them because they’re part of the crew. But earlier in the episode, Simon’s own father said he would not come back for him if he got in trouble again while trying to free his sister. It’s a great contrast and a good look at Mal’s integrity and moral code.

    • @Asehpe
      @Asehpe Год назад

      I've always wondered about that. I don't think, as it happened, that it makes Mal's moral code shine so much; after all, he did take the decision of leaving River and Simon behind. It was later on, already in space, that Kayleigh and Inara talking to him made him change his mind. For a while he was like, well, we survived without them, we'll survive without them again. But then he was reminded of said code, and changed his mind. Sooo... he was ready to do the wrong thing, if his out-of-body conscience (Kayleigh) hadn't stopped him...

    River cut Jayne's t-shirt and took the labels off the tin cans for the same reason. The Blue Sun Corporation. They were the ones behind the experiments. Blue Sun is the biggest company in the Verse computers, genetics, military contracts, and food products. The tin cans had Blue Sun labels. Jayne was wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt. They were the intended big bad of the series if you closely look at the pilot you can see Whedon layering clues and easter eggs from the beginning. "Two by two hands of blue".

    • @NoHandleGrr
      @NoHandleGrr Год назад +10

      There are Blue Sun posters on walls in the background of several shots on the planet they land on to pick up the passengers, as well. You have to pay attention to subtle clues that don't hit you over the head with FIREFLY. That's what makes it so great: it's smart, made for smart people.

  • @silvsevie
    @silvsevie Год назад +82

    I think the "weird closeness" and River feeding Simon is less to be weird and uncomfortable, and more to show that River acts like a child, like the "found you" bit. Its not weird when a little kid feeds and older sibling or family member, because the kid is innocent and doesn't read anything weird in doing it. So the mix with the childish behavior and the genius behavior, show the arrested development River went through; she is 16 now but she went to that "academy" at 11-12, so she didn't have a chance to grow up and learn social cues while being tortured and experimented on. So River and Simon are specially close because they are trauma bonded, aside from River's arrested development, last time they were together she was his 11 year old baby sister, he got to grow up and live his life, and she stayed the same but traumatized, so he still sees her as his baby sister, who is extra vulnerable and needs extra protection and affection because of her mental state.

    • @maddwitch
      @maddwitch Год назад +16

      I feel like, added to that, is the fact that, before she went to the alliance "school", River was younger and smarter than the kids at her school, so she probably didn't really have friends, a lot of geniuses have trouble connecting with people, and their parents were probably busy with work and social stuff, leading River to lean on Simon more and Simon to take on a semi-parental role.

      Some of us grew up in households where such interactions were discouraged as unsanitary.While I'm sure my older siblings fed me as a child, I'm also sure it was from my own bowl with my own spoon and never having touched the food directly.
      We did not drink out of the jug (that was enough to make my dad throw it away), or out or each other's cups/glasses; we each got our own ears of corn, our own slices/plates of watermelon, our own dinnerware, and handling, say, several biscuits from the platter before selecting one could get a sharp word from either parent.
      It's not that they weren't loving; they were teaching us to be A) sanitary and B) sovereign individuals, something lacking in today's society (no, egotism and entitlement mentality do not equate to sovereign individualism).

    I always figured Shepherd was previously an Alliance secret agent, or something similar, before retiring to his life of faith. Judging by the occasional unexplained things he would spout about that type of stuff. Especially in the movie regarding how such Alliance operatives go about their business. Might explain why he went to help the other agent out in the first episode, along with his Alliance ID. If the seasons had continued, I suspect there would've been a reveal about him being instrumental in the Alliance victory at Serenity which could cause some temporary friction between him and Mal (and possibly a bit for Zoe) for some extra drama.

    I just finished your reaction to Ariel, and I completely understand how you feel about Jayne. But after multiple viewings of the entire Firefly/Serenity saga, I have a different take than most. Yes Jayne turned them in, but I don't think it was about the money. He obviously wanted the money, but I don't think that's why he did it. He had multiple opportunities to turn them in before. I think it's significant that he doesn't do so until after River attacked him. His talk with Mal in sickbay I think tells his whole motivation. He's come to care for the crew and is worried that River will attack one of them next. Mal shuts him down and Jayne knows him well enough to know that nothing he can say or do will change Mal's mind. So even though it was an asshole move, I honestly think that Jayne selling out the Tams was his way of protecting his friends and crew. I think it was less disloyalty and avarice than it was a seriously misguided attempt to do what he thought was best for everyone. I think his conversation at the end with Mal backs up this take. When he accepts his fate, his "last request" is that Mal not tell the others what he did. If he didn't care about them, he wouldn't care about what they thought of him. I could be wrong, but that's how I see Jayne's motivation.

    I have 2 favorites. Kaylee and River. River holds a special place in my heart and always will. Through her torture and plight, she still managed to hold onto a bit of herself, even if stunted and come right back when shes around Simon. Sometimes, its like no time has passed and they are back home, young still and happy. That girl is amazing. Kaylee, theres never enough space to say things about her. She sees the good in every single situation, even when she got shot at the beginning of the series. She tells Mal "It's nobodys fault. Promise you'll remember that." Shes a beautiful soul through and through. Out of gas is and always will be, without a second thought to it, my favorite. You see so much in that episode that I have to sometimes remind myself that it was literally just 1 episode. All the crew, how they came to be, where they were before Serenity and some of them why they are there as well. Mal, as someone that loves that ship more than he could ever love anything, refuses to leave it and you see more in depth with him as well. Love at first sight with that ship. Its a beautiful episode all around.

    the original Jubal Early was a Confederate General. Joss learned that Early was an ancestor of Nathan Fillion so he made the name into an Easter egg. turns out Fillian was wrong, he comes from German stock & Early's was Irish. he's also responsible for the quote "I aim to misbehave".

    Out of Gas is my favourite - it's very very close to the perfect science fiction episode. Too many people don't know about Con Man which was written and directed (mostly) by Alan Tudyk about an actor that played the pilot in a tv show that was cancelled early in it's run but later gained massive cult status that starred an actor that bears a striking resemblance to Nathan Fillion - it's very funny and well worth a watch, and has a huge cast of well known tv and movie actors, some playing themselves some playing fictional characters.

    Criminal what they did to this remarkable, brilliant show. The writing, the cast, everything about this was pure and unadulterated perfection. This is how you make a meaningful, memorable show. The stupidity and ignorance of the studios squandered what has to be one of the finest shows ever made. Criminal. Thank you Joss, for a least giving us the movie to wrap it up - and the studio system managed to ruin the success of that too. You have to watch Serenity to complete the story.

    Russian submarine captains would take hard turns to make sure another submarine isn't hiding in their wake.

    Nerd alert: the reason River tears the labels off the cans in Shindig, and also why she slices Jayne in Ariel, is because of the Blue Sun logo. Blue Sun is a ubiquitous company that has their fingers in pretty much everything, including the “academy” where River was tortured. The Blue Sun logo is a bit of a trigger for her as a result.

    Dortmund is a city in Germany. There is an imported German beer, Dortmunder. It can also be a Family name, like "person from Dortmunder.". I knew it as the name of Donald Westlake's hard luck burgler. Westlake needed a character name, happened to be in a bar considering that, and saw a neon beer sign. He liked the name. Joss needed a name for a ship, happened to be in a bar considering that, saw a beer sign, liked the name.

    One thread that was just starting when the show go cancelled was that the Blue Sun company (the ones behind River's... "conditioning") products were not her favorite. When she tore the labels off the cans, they were Blue Sun products; likewise, when she slashed Jayne, he was wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt. See the logo/label of that company could set her off (or trigger her, as the kids say); we learned the company was evil, but that seeing the logo flipped her switch we didn't really get as much of (since the show was cancelled).

    I believe Shepard was the second son of an alliance big wig. Typically, second sons of bigwigs would go either into the clergy or the military. They weren’t going to inherit anything so clergy was a pretty safe place to go. Typical of high society during certain periods of history.
    They are replicating the Victorian/Guilded Age society. I’m also reminded of the post civil war reconstruction, so it also reminds me of Jose Wales.
