- Hello people! You guys suggested it to me, so here it is: my reaction to the first episode of Firefly! I knew NOTHING about this serie, and i've been pleasantly surprise! Can't wait to embark in this ride with you guys.

Oh that's true!! I need to stop making that mistake because a lot of people in the comment corrected me! I entered a fandom i need to respect it 😇 from my understanding, the network fucked everything up, which is even more frustrating i must assume!!
This isn't the movie. This is the original pilot and intended first episode, but it's a double-length one (intended to be broadcast in two parts, with the first part ending with the reveal of River in the box). The studio, however, forced the creation of a second pilot episode ( "The Train Job"), showed that one first, and then showed the other episodes out of order and finally killed the show mid-season with three episodes produced but unaired. The movie (confusingly also called _Serenity_) was made later in order to wrap up some plot points left open by the cancellation.
The correct episode order is: Serenity (double episode), The Train Job, Bushwhacked, Shindig, Safe, Our Mrs Reynolds, Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, War Stories, Trash, The Message, Heart of Gold, Objects in Space, and finally Serenity (the movie). The DVDs and as far as I know any streaming services carrying the show should have the correct order.
(Is it just me, or is the editing/rendering all screwed up after about the 30 min mark?)

Right, should have checked before asking that LOL it is in the order that you said. Possible confusion avoided ! But it sucks to see that the Studio is mostly the reason as to why it got cancelled because it looks to be VERY popular
Actually, the movie wasn't made to wrap up some plot points. Fans raised around $35 million for the movie. The movie was intended to continue the story as a movie franchise. FOX had nothing to do with the movie and refused to allow them to use the name Firefly in the title.
The series cancelation was orchestrated by a new executed which plotted the series demise before it ever aired.
The advertisements for the series were misrepresented, the demand for a new pilot, showing episodes out of order, preempting the series multiple times, and finally changing the time and day of the series without giving notice to the viewers were all done to get the series canceled. I've read a few reasons why such as wanting to reduce the budget, hating Science Fiction, revenge for a relative not getting a part in the series, etc.
Some context which are not spoilers:
1. The war (6 years ago) was between the Alliance (purple bellies) and Independents (brown coats). The Alliance won, Mal and Zoe fought for the Independents.
2. The Alliance is the government. It is more present on the central (core) planets, and less present on the outer (rim) planets. Mal prefers being on the rim.
3. "Serenity" is the name of this ship. She is a "Firefly" class ship (type/model).
4. English and Chinese are the dominant languages. In this show when you hear someone talking Chinese they are usually just swearing (it avoids censorship!)
5. Inara is a "companion". I think of her as a high-class courtesan or geisha - legal and very respectable. She rents one of Serenity's shuttles and generally does her own thing.
6. The rest of the crew are just trying to survive by taking any job that pays - legal or illegal.
IMO the heart of this show is the well-drawn crew, and the marinade of action and humour.
Also, the term Browncoats, is a reference to the forces who fought against the Alliance in The War. Because they typically wore....well...brown coats, like the one Mal wears. The intended comparison would be closest to the american civil war, with the Alliance being the Union, and the Browncoats being the Confederacy. At least in overall presentation. Definitely NOT in the motivations for why they are fighting. So if you ever watched a lot of western movies, you would sometimes see a few of them with characters wearing what is obviously either a Union jacket, or a Confederate jacket, but obviously the war is long over. That's kind of what's going on with Mal's wardrobe.

But really, those are spoilers because those are all things you learn along the way through watching the actions and listening to the dialog.
I really do not understand why people cannot let a reactor go into a show with the same amount of knowledge we were provided the first time we watched. You know, none.
@@No1Knows because there are multiple reactors who didn't actually pick up details as simple as "who is the alliance, why are those ships coming down out of the sky? is he part of the alliance?" etc.
and they're really not spoilers. they are details literally set up in the opening episode, and opening scene. i've watched several people get confused by the exact details that seem to be apparent to you, but apparently aren't, because they would watch the episode, and make comments clearly indicating they did not actually pick up that detail. and would be confused later. for example i've literally seen someone get confused about the term serenity, when the opening shot literally says "The Battle of Serenity" on it, to establish it's a war site. and yet, some reactors get confused about that later when it's referenced and they're like 'do they mean the ship? what is serenity?" and since these details are simply related to the setup of the overall world, and not episode specific spoilers, I fail to see what the issue is. seriously, i've watched probably like 10 different people watch this show, and for some reason, almost all of them get confused about some of the very basic details of the world, even WITH an opening narration to explain it, and the details being very simple and direct.

Yes, Firefly is a specific model of ship. They're no longer manufactured. It isn't specifically illegal to own one, but Fireflies are extremely useful for smuggling because they contain so many odd nooks and crannies where contraband can be hidden. Therefore, even though it's perfectly legal to own a Firefly it's also highly suspicious.
Especially when you're in the middle of nowhere, floating next to a ship that was abandoned months ago.

Firefly was unusual, in that it had nine regular cast members. A series of action figures was started, but stopped at five characters. Only Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Jayne, and Wash got figures. I have all five, and I'm STILL bitter that the rest didn't get figures.

You will learn more about the ship dynamics and the 'verse they live in. The quick rake away from this episode is: The captain and crew will do what they need to in order to pay the bills, "crime" or "honest" transport duty are options, sometimes at the same time.
Inara is a companion... a bit like a geisha or consort it is a respected profession with some... questionable duties. Her respectable presence allows the crew to go places the "common folk" might have a harder time getting access to.
The pepper in Chinese for colour and to get around certain profanity censors.
21:40 What are Reavers she asks... wait for Zoey. Those 2 sentences are still... chilling. Even after all the rewatches I've done. 22:30 "yeah really not good" about sums it up.
Think of Fireflies like those vans that they always use to kidnap people in movies and tv shows!

"Backstory" comes in bits and pieces, and some, we NEVER get, or get after the show was cancelled , and the movie, literally, in the comic books. But Joss will usually give AN explanation, within a few minutes...
The opening scene shows us the battle of Serenity Valley, the final battle in the Unification War, between the Union of Allied Planets and the Independent Planets. The Alliance won. Mal and Zoe were Independents, AKA "Browncoats" because that's the only uniform they had.
Because their cause was just, Mal was convinced the Browncoats would win - after all, God is on the side of justice, isn't He? ISN'T HE? Apparently not. This is when Mal lost his faith.
Since the war, it's been hard for known Browncoats to get honest (i.e. legal) work, so Mal is now a thief and a smuggler. But despite his loss of faith Mal is still inflicted with a conscience, though he tries to deny it, and this further limits the jobs he can take.

Couple of small things: if you haven’t already checked, “Persephone” is (in my experience anyway) pronounced “per-SEF-eh-nee”. She’s the queen of the underworld in Greek mythology. Also, a bit of silly trivia: somewhere on RUclips is a video of Jewel Staite where she tells a story of her getting hired to play Kaylee. One of the requirements was that she put on about 20 lbs (9kg); she also said that asking a woman to put on weight for a role was basically unheard of in her experience. They asked this because Kaylee is a person who “enjoys a cheeseburger”; she enjoys /feeling/ things…like strawberries. :)
Long ago in the olden times of the early 2000s... 🤣 a new series would start with a two episode 'movie', subtracting commercial breaks that Network TV would have put during the broadcast, it takes about an hour and a half of actual run time.

Fireflys are not illegal to have but typically are used to do illegal things.
As far as I understand anything legal can be transported including people. The goods they took are illegal cause it wasn't a legal salvage which means the government didn't get their cut. If the people are fugitives then that would also be transporting fugitives which would unless authorized by the government be illegal.
Inara is similar to a passenger, she rents a shuttle that she lives on and flies to clients for business. A companion is like a combination of Ghesha and Corteasan. She is highly educated and trained in the arts, sciences, politics, and culture. Her clients are high society and the wealthy.
The Alliance is the merging of the US and China and so they speak English and Mandarin. They also use Mandarin to swear to get by the TV censors.
This takes place in a new solar system with the inner planets heavily populated and under strict control by the government. The outer planets and moons are more like the old West which is less civilized and less controlled by the government. Thus, making this a Western in Space.

It was actually more like half a season. FOX deliberately sabotaged the show. They aired the episodes out of order and didn't air some of them at all in the U.S., kept changing the time when it aired, pre-empted it for all sorts of things, and eventually stuck it in the worst time slot imaginable, all to cut the ratings enough that they'd have an excuse for cancelling it. 😡
Joss Whedon had a whole multi-season story arc planned for this series, that would eventually have solved all the mysteries, but it was not to be. They did, however, manage to make a movie which at least resolved the two biggest mysteries. The name of the movie is _Serenity,_ and you should definitely watch it after you finish the series. It is superb.

I'm not sure about the capabilities of the RUclips editor, but if it allows you to add text, I would suggest adding a note saying it's corrupted, and just include the last section of your video at the beginning of the next episode. I've heard re-uploading a video can be pretty bad for your views.

FYI: i did love it!! I tend to talk less in first episodes because i am very focusing on the plots, characters names, etc. But i def enjoyed it and i am here for the ride!!
Just to warn you: after you finish Firefly, depending on your jurisdiction, you might be legally obligated to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Even if that is not the case, it's still highly encouraged, since, as good as Firefly is, Buffy is where Whedon's genius reached its peak.
Also, no, it's legal to have a Firefly. It's not what they HAVE that is illegal, it's what they DO.

The episode you just watched was the first episode in the series. And yes the movie at the end is called Serenity, it want planned. Josh didn't expect the season to be canceled during the first season, so they made the movie at the end to finish off the story. And after all the country's converged, Chinese and English are mostly spoken. It's been said, that Josh wanted the Chinese to be spoken so they can cuss on air, and that was an easy way to do it. Persephone (pronounced Per-SEF-uh-nee', primary emphasis on the second syllable) is the name of one planet; you won't need to remember it.
The official story is that in the Firefly universe, when humans used up all the resources of "Earth that was," they went looking for other habitable planets and found a star cluster. The search was co-sponsored by the two biggest political powers on Earth at the time: the U.S. and China. So in the star cluster there are two official languages, English and Mandarin, and everyone speaks both. (Though since all the actors are native English speakers the Mandarin you'll hear in the series isn't very good.) Mostly this was used as a way to insert swear words that the censors wouldn't bleep out.
The inner planets of the star cluster were settled first, so they've had longer to terraform. Those are the planets with elegant, high-tech cities and rich inhabitants and are the primary location of the Alliance government. Serenity operates primarily in the outer planets, where things like fresh food (or ANY food) can be scarce and people are more concerned with survival than with legalities.

@@JustsMyles15 Watch carefully and you'll see the relationship; a mother (Inara) / daughter (Kaylee) relationship.
For example, next episode (Train Job) you'll see Inara doing Kaylee's hair. Also, when there's danger Inara pulls Kaylee to safety.
this is just part of the Series. The movie was theatrically released after the show ended. It ties up a lot of loose ends.
Jayne and Kaylee have a bit of a "obnoxous brother/precautous sister" sort of relationship. He is crude and insulting about her crush, like a proper obnoxous brother would be, but he still cares enough to be chewing his fingernails, watching her having life saving surgery.

Inara is a futuristic version of a Geisha. She is very highly educated in all ways to read, psychoanalyze, please and entertain people (male and female) on an individual basis. Sex is part of the deal but not in a basic way. They have a very high status in this society. She is renting one of their two shuttles which allows her freedom of independent movement on planet and close to planets.
It's not illegal to own a Firefly class ship, it's just illegal to steal from other ships as they're doing.
It's a small cargo ship that has a few extra cabins for passengers. Mostly they smuggle and do other odd jobs, some legal and some not.
Inara is renting one of the ship's two shuttles for her work. (She's not really an ambassador.)
Somehow I missed this back in 2002. Not sure why. Friend at work so Amoure'd with it I decided to look it up. Bought the episodes and final movie and I am now a big fan. So pleased I built my friend a detailed model of the ship for Christmas. He was speechless.

The movie is also called serenity.
And Amora is a companion, a companion is a geisha. And this dystopian world, a companion is a status symbol.
When new series would premier on tv, often would either have a 2 episodes or play them back to back.

Jayne is, in fact, kind of a “public relations” guy... for certain types of public.
River is not 16 - she was 16 when she went to the academy, then after a few months she managed to contact Simon with a coded letter, relying on him being smart enough to decypher it, even though they didn't agree on a code, then he spent, I believe, two years trying to get close, and then finally managed to get River out. So, she's at least 18, maybe 19.

This might be a touch long but NO SPOILERS. And, I try to break things into small sections.
So, Firefly class ships are often used for smuggling/illegal salvage because their design allows for lots of places to hide things. However, it is not "Illegal" to own one. But, the "Authorities" may profile you as a criminal, even if you're a law abiding citizen, for owning one.

Technically, Inara (The Companion), does give money to the captain since she rents a shuttle from him. Companions are complicated. Think of them as a cross between a Geisha and an Extremely Expensive Call Girl.
As other's have said, this is Episode 1 of Firefly which is called "Serenity". It was a two part Pilot for the series. Which is why it seems as long as a movie. Some TV series did this back in the day. The movie, which is also called "Serenity" definitely comes later.

When they made the movie Serenity, the plan was to call it Firefly, but for some reason FAUX still had name rights and refused to let Whedon and company to use the name, so Serenity was agreed name instead.
Is FAUX the name of the network?? Either way, they did them dirty!! An awesome, popular show got all confusing and cancelled for nothing :( what a shame

Dare we not name "WKRP in Cincinnati" (1978-1982) any more? Gordon Sims became night deejay "Venus Flytrap.";) However, Actor Tim Reid was "Venus Flytrap," while Ron Glass was "Shepherd Book"; He played "Det. Harris" on "Barney Miller (1975-1982).
I think you're getting him (Ron Glass) mixed up with Tim Reid, who played Venus on WKRP. Ron was the impeccably dressed detective who liked the finer things in life - Sgt Harris on "Barney Miller".

It's not Illegal to have a certain type of ship, it's just that certain types of ship are more common among those who do illegal things.
a crew of a ship may pull any job they can get their hands on to pay the bills, it's how they live. transporting cargo one day, taxi service the next, illegal salvage on the side...

In this era of television normal episodes of drama shows were roughly 45 minutes long plus 15 minutes of commercials spread across a few commercial breaks to fill a 1hr time slot. Debut/pilot episodes for drama shows tended to be double length to give enough time to really solidify the show’s premise, setting, and characters for the viewers. Though this is a 90 minute episode, with an extra timeslot’s worth of commercials this filled a 2hr time block when it first aired.
Yeah that's what i gathered from the comments! I am a millenials so i am from that era of television actually hahaha but i watched Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill or Gilmore Girls, so they didnt have longer pilot, i dont think it was necessary for those kind of shows, so i never noticed for other genre of tv show that pilot were longer!
A Firefly is just a class/brand of space ship. They aren't inherently illegal. The problem is that Captain Mal and crew were salvaging items from an Alliance ship. Salvage isn't strictly illegal, but there are laws that cover what sort of ships can be salvaged, and salvaging a derelict Alliance ship (a government ship) is definitely a no-no.
There is another movie for after the season. It's called Serenity (2005).

I've been recommended Fallout, The Boys, and Firefly, all three series i would probably never watch, and i've been pleasantly surprised by all three!!
Yes, Episode one is named "Serenity." Yes, episode one is almost as long as a movie, because it was introducing all the main characters.
Yes, the movie is ALSO named _"Serenity,"_ but you were correct when you thought it would be set after the end of the series; it is. You should plan to watch it separately.

at this point you know that there was a war, you know that some people are rich and have tech and others are poor and don't. you know that Companions are respected, but not by mal.
A Companion is a prostitude that is registered with a guild. They are VERY expensive and generally hired by very rich and upper class people. They are respected and sometimes admired by normal people. Most Companions are on the dozen or so planets in the core of the solar system, not residing with smugglers in the outer uncivilized planets.
This show takes place in the future after most of humanity moved from earth to a new solar system with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. Before the move the 2 super powers on earth, China and the U.S., joined together to run earth. Everyone speaks both English and Mandarin.

Hahah!! I am not a young person though! '93 baby 😎 but that's why i was confused by the lenght of that first episode because back then, since it played on tv, the network had just a certain block of time for the show because another show had to play after!!
But yeah i remember it was normal for a series to have 20 episodes per season! It's crazy to think that nowadays, 8 episodes is the majority.
@@JustsMyles15 - Yeah, I stopped watching television when there was nothing on television worth watching.
It wasn't unusual back in the day for the pilot episode of an hour-long show to be two hours, given there was so much exposition to work in to the story.
In case you haven't seen anyone comment on it yet, "Serenity" was rejected as the pilot and not shown until after the series was cancelled - so the next episode (Train Job) became the pilot. If you notice you'll see a lot of the background rehashed in that episode, but it goes by quickly (since it's only half as long.)
Yeah someone mentioned that in the comment!! That is so weird... The first episode is so good and really set things off right... I havent watch the next episode so i cannot say anything about that, but that must have been confusing!!
Because in the last few decades they've managed to chop seasons down to the point of only being this length or shorter. Most younger folk (and yes, I'm including 30-year-olds) may not realize that shows used to have 20+ eps per season. They're used to this 8-10 eps per season crap that has become trendy.
The Mouse is a *major* offender on that score.
When you have new shows most of them come out with the first episode as their pilot to see how audiences like it. Just to give you some context about the show; when you hear someone saying something in Chinese, most of the time, but not always, they are cursing. So, when it looks like they are cursing insert your favorite curse word because the Chinese to English translations don't exactly translate word for word. The show writers did this to get past the censors to keep it a PG rating.
Inara is not an "official ambassador", she's paid to escort and have s@x with people who she chooses. In this society being a companion is a very prestigious and LEGAL profession. She only rents one of the shuttles from Mal.
Episode 1 is the pilot episode, so it's longer than the rest of the episodes in the series.
A double pilot from what i understand! I learned that it was not untypical back then for action shows to have a double lenght episode ! I was watching Charmed and Gilmore Girls in the early 2000s so i dont think they needed a longer pilot to really set things off 😝

Inara is a Registered Companion. This is a highly respectable profession; there is no equivalent on earth currently. Calling her a "wh*re" is not only deliberately rude; it's inaccurate. Yes, s3x work is part of what a Companion does, but it isn't the essence of it.
Inara rents one of Serenity's ship's boats, which she uses as her home and as local transportation - it doesn't have the range of Serenity but it's space-worthy and would have no trouble traveling between planets the habital zone of a single system. And yes, there are occasions when Inara's status gets Serenity or her crew members out of trouble, so in some ways Inara is, indeed, Serenity's ambassador.
Yes, there _are_ whores in this universe, but Inara isn't one.

I am french canadian actually 😇 although i am somewhat billingual, there is a "language barrier" still! So when a watch a show that are using "elevate dialogue" or longer sentences, or bigger words, i can get a little lost sometimes... I normally watch sitcoms so nothing too hard to understand 😅

It’s not a full season, it’s only *half* of a season. The show was cancelled before they even aired half the episodes planned. Back then, most TV shows were 24-30 episode seasons.
15:51 Did you make note of how quickly and adeptly the preacher disarmed and disabled Dobson? I bet they don’t teach those skills at the abbey.
Also, did you notice how during the opening battle scene, Mal kissed his cross, mentioned God a couple of times…but later in the present, he wants nothing to do with God or religion. The defeat of the Independents wounded him deeply.
In addition to lending an amount of legitimacy to Serenity, Inara *is* paying rent to use one of the ship’s shuttles as her transportation to appointments and as her personal quarters.

Sorry there, that sort of reaction title trend has been bothering me for a long time. It makes me think of a toddler declaring how much they hate a food they've never seen before. Since I try most Firefly reactions, you got my annoyed and annoying outburst. Sorry again.
Hahah! No problem! I say that it's better than i thought because i dont watch sci-fi, or shows that has anything to do with space. I dont really watch action either; i am a sitcom and romcom kinda girl! So when everybody suggested this one, and the only thing that i knew about it was that it was sci-fi, i was reluctant for sure! But that's kinda the goal here: to go out of my comfort zone and give a chance to shows that i would never watch on my own time!! Didnt know that it was a title trend tho 😬

I hope you enjoy watching Firefly - it's one of my favorite series ever - but I kind of can't believe you posted this video. You have almost no interesting commentary to add, you misread basic things about lots of scenes, your editing of the Firefly episode is bizarre and incoherent, and as you mention, the last 3 1/2 minutes are a garbled mess. Like, I really, genuinely don't mean to sound rude, but take some pride in the content you toss out on the internet.
