The old guy who saves Kaylee from the mean girls deserves a medal.
AGREED!
Did you notice the guy who got c blocked trying to ask Kaylee to dance.
Or maybe a sash!
Firefly is one of those rare shows where you always love the episode you just watched the most. They are all so good.
- Shindig: "Wow, this episode was so fun! This is my favorite episode of the series!"
- Our Mrs. Reynolds: "Okay, I was wrong. THIS is the best episode of the series!"
- Jaynestown: "I don't know if it's better than the previous one, but this is definitely one of the best episodes of the series. Easily top 3."
- Out of Gas: "THIS is clearly the best episode so far... maybe I'm just gonna stop ranking them."
@@TheYakusoku That would be the perfect point ;)
I'm completely unable to rank the episodes, but if I had to name THE one standout episode, for me it would be indeed "Out Of Gas".
All except that last one. I still enjoy it, but knowing it's the last episode kind of takes the pleasure out of watching it...
Can we appreciate the stunt at the beginning where someone flies head over heels over the bar and into a mirror? That's not an easy one to pull off.
YES 🙌
The episode opens in a saloon. What a Western thing is that! And while we're waiting for the inevitable brawl to start, Inara is drinking something pink and milky from a tiny little cordial glass. Wonderful little detail. Then Mal gets thrown thru the window, also a typical Western thing, except it's a force field or hologram or something. Gotta love it.
Correct. Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee, doesn't like strawberries. Yet on this show she manages to convince you that she loves them, because she's a darn good actor.
That’s amazing!!
My favorite little moment out of the entire series is:
Wash "Captain can I have money for a slinky dress?"
Jayne "I'll chip in"
Zoe "I can hurt you"
And she gets the slinky dress in the movie! No spoilers about why, though!
Holy shit, when she starts screaming for Mal to kill Atherton I'm like "Damn! That's-- that's actually kind of hot."
"CHOP HIS HEAD OFF!"
This view is completely understandable.
This episode has one of my favorite lines in the whole series.
Mal: How would you even set up a meet, man won't deal with you?
Badger: Know a place he'll be. Safe place. Using some new tech gun scans. High class, too. Won't let me in there. You might slip in. Of course, you couldn't buy an invite with a diamond the size of a testicle. I got my hands on a couple.
[Mal and Jayne snicker]
Badger: Of invites.
I like how you edit your reactions. A joy to watch.
No unnecessary zooming, just simply (?) done.
btw: If you buy the box set you get audio commentaries by the cast and crew for many episodes.
Omg thats amazing, i might need to look into the box set! Thanks so much glad you enjoy them!!!
@@NythicalReacts ya welcome. 👍
I particularly liked the (spoiler removed) one done by (spoiler removed). 😁
One of the stories that Jewel Staite (Kaylee) tells is that when she was hired, she was told she’d need to put on about 20 pounds for the role because “they wanted Kaylee to look like she enjoys a cheeseburger”; she also mentioned that (no huge shock) Hollywood asking a woman to gain weight for a role was, in her experience , basically unheard of. We see hints of that in episode 1 with the strawberries, and this one where she jokes about questioning the buffet table. Kaylee enjoys life in big bites, both figuratively and literally. :)
Thank you for your reactions and so glad you are enjoying the show.
IMO the best episodes are still ahead of you.
Can't wait!
The first call that Inara was watching was pre-recorded. The ding in the scene was a notification of a live call probably.
Ooh okay! Thank you!
"Any man here, can give you use of a sword."
"Use of a s...what?"
This had me cracking up even while editing i was laughing again 😂
simon: the captain's a good fighter. he must know how to handle a sword.
zoe: i think he knows which end to hold.
Atherton is not dumb, he is entitled. He really believes he is better than others just because he has money.
I misuse the word dumb often, if i don’t like someone they’re dumb! 😂
@@NythicalReacts I think the word you are searching is "unpleasant". 😉
Great react- glad you are enjoying the show.
Thank you!!
1) The actors playing cards for chores insisted to have real rules. So, it is a real, albeit simplistic, game.
2) The insult that older gentleman uttered, saving Kaylee, is actually two insults at once. He didn't say “You are a slut”; no, he said “Your dad told me you're a slut”. Since no respectable father would say that about his daughter even if it's true, it actually means “You are a slut and a low-birth”. Perfect.
3) There is a nice review of the duel alone, here on YT, by a professional fencer. Bottom line is, the duel is fairly realistic, except for a few nitpicks, and the way Mal won would be generally considered fair. It's OK to throw your sword, or a part thereof; it's also OK to use a guard as brass knuckles (note that Mal doesn't hit Atherton just with a fist). Inara provided an unfair distraction, but that's not Mal's fault.
I grew up in Oregon and often would pick strawberries off the vine, and it's a local variety too. They are so delicious the store ones taste like water and plastic by comparison so I can see why some people don't like them, as they've never had a great one.
You’re so right!! Locally grown & purchased taste a lot better 👏
I had the DVD set way back when, and sat on the last 3 episodes for weeks because I didn't want it to end...we all feel like this
This is 100% understandable
Jayne: So we going to play cards or screw around?
I do also love the takedown on the mean girls.
As Mal says, he respects her not her profession.
Mercy is the mark of a great man... well I'm alright.
Atherton is... the privileged, entitled, snob... and he deserved to get taken down a peg or 20. This 'verse has a meddling gov't and many things are... hard to come by away from the rich "inner planets" so... cows, strawberries, heck any fresh food is a rare treat.
All the old timers gathered around Kaylee are having fun now, but I bet they all have a wife watching somewhere in the room.
“We’ll…I guess I’m alright” 😂
It was considered VERY bad form under the Code Duello to insist on weapons that your opponent had no capability with. Typically the Seconds would agree to the conditions. Atherton was jeopardizing his reputation and standing in an "Honor Society", not to mention, his life. Playing with a human opponent? Pure Chance is always a factor in mortal combat. Feet slip, pistols misfire, swords break...if you fuck around, you may very well find out.
And in the end, Atherton screwed up by letting himself be distracted - and Mal did use the sword to win, even after it was broken. Fair win.
If you did dress like that you would look absolutely stunning:)
Oh thank you!😊
@@NythicalReacts Your very welcome:)
One of the tiny bits of show lore: Inara's gown was the costumer designer's wedding dress. And the corset did not fit Morena, so she wound up wearing it upside down.
During the dance, when there is a group dancing together, they are doing square-dance moves to the classical music.
Omg i didn’t notice 😂
When Inara talks about choosing clients based on their "energy", remember: she liked Atherton.
When you move to a new land or world that is raw and unimproved, having modern machinery is good, but having a horse or animals is better. They don't break down and need parts, and when times get rough you can always eat animals. You can't eat machines. Settlers value food, water, medicine, and livestock over silver, gold, and jewels.
So true!!
"Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we shall call it...this land."
Wash. S1E1.
Actually, the real issue here is the Alliance government policies concerning commerce.
The "Lord" here is a wealthy agricultural industry magnate, and very much an influential and "proper" citizen of a core planet. Publicly, he must be seen as someone who complies with the government's economic "regulations," amongst these are controls on what can/cannot be sold in various areas of the Alliance territory, and to whom.
This is portrayed implicitly by the fact that the "Lord" had to secretly make contact with Badger for the purpose of selling his cattle off-world and, more to the point, to people who weren't even a part of the government on the moon where they were being smuggled to.
This agricultural industry magnate was WILLING to sell some of his cattle off-world to civilians who had the money to buy them, but (as it is implied) the Alliance government has made this either a criminal act, or they tax the hell out of the sale, making it very cost-prohibitive (which is actually a way that a corrupt government EFFECTIVELY makes something illegal, but without the general public being aware that this is the true intent of the taxation).
In short, the Alliance government simply doesn't want the outlying planets or moons to have ANY supplies that the government hasn't RATIONED to them, so that they remain DEPENDENT on the government and therefore COMPLIANT with the Alliance government's authority.
@@atlasisshrugging Yup!
On a newly terraformed planet, the things that will grow fastest are low grasses , weeds, and scrub brush... none of which is edible to people. So the most valuable commodities are the factories that will turn inedible things into edible things... ie: cows, sheep, chickens, etc. Suddenly you have milk, eggs, wool, leather, etc.
You can see in this series that the least developed planets resemble desert prairie land... then slightly more lush prairies, and finally in the places that have been thriving for decades, you might see trees and forests.
Love how much you're loving this show!
"Shindig": Heading for Persephone, Inara takes on a sketchy client. Badger clues Mal in on a noble smuggling job.
Lindsey Stirling concert last night, Firefly reaction today. Been a good week…
I LOVE Lindsey Stirling, she’s incredible in concert! Glad you’re having a fun week 🥰
@@NythicalReactsIf you haven’t seen it already, please react to her Eye of the Untold Her video!
I'd put this episode in the top 15.
I love your laugh. And if any show deserves it, this one does. 😉
I loved Mal punching Atherton too, lol. Such a throughly manly thing to do. Everyone is shocked when he calls her the same thing Atherton did later, but his explanation makes sense to me.
He also has a bur under his saddle about the fact that she subjects herself to Alliance rules; feels like that subjection makes her a slave.
He is attracted to her and the thought of other men being intimate with her for money grates on him.
Of course, he can’t admit any of that. He has intimacy issues, stemming from the war, I’d say. A relationship would complicate things for Inara too. It’s quite the roller coaster ride watching them dance about.
Thank you!!
I ask this of all reactors for firefly and unless ive miseed it, i still havent seen a reactor do it.
But after the movie id love to see a video of you talking about the show. Fave character, worst character, fav ep, plot lines you wished would continue, etc
I accidentally hit the subscribe button but I guess it's just as well I've been watching all of the Firefly reactions lol.
Ngl, if I were Inara and I had her job I would absolutely not be happy with the captain assaulting my client and almost getting himself killed. Inara is likely an expert in dealing with men like Atherton (the weirdest thing is that she has engaged him more than once though, I do kinda wonder about that), she would manage him without violence and potentially even without him knowing he's been managed.
But, I definitely enjoy this episode and Mal's protectiveness and care can be very endearing. Just was vaulting off of what you said about how youd maybe swoon and thinking about what I'd do, myself 😁
The fancy door knob is basically just a lightbulb.
Atherton isn't dumb, just deeply entitled.
I got to hang out with the guy who awkwardly propositions Inara right before Atherton. He was friends with my coworker's gf from back in Kansas City. He was on What I Like About You with Amanda Bynes at the time.
Is that a Stitch doll? I worked on the DVD features.
I don't get why even the rich people are stuck in the 18th/19th century in fashion and culture.
Loved your reaction. Simple words of warning. Don't watch any ' previously on Firefly.' they can spoil certain events that are on the episode.
Happy September👍
Jewel (Kaylee) said she hated that wear that dress between her scenes, she couldn't sit down and going to the bathroom was a nightmare.
She didn't wear the crotchless pantaloons that women wore with those dresses.
If you can, definitely attend a ball, they are awesome!
I gotta!!
Me: already a huge fan of Nythical Reacts.
Also Me: WAIT... is that a T Swift shirt?
Hahahah it is!!
@@NythicalReacts Totally subscribed, just for that.
Glad you're enjoying my favorite show! Shindig is also my favorite episode.
Use the pointy end.
I'm glad you recognized that Atherton is a creep and predator. I watched another reaction channel where both women were swooning over Atherton and cheering for him the whole time and hated Mal through the rest of the series. It was bizarre.
HUHHH??? That’s something…NO WAY, TEAM MAL ALL THE WAY!!
Did I tell you when you get the "I see the end coming" blues buy a brown coat. Wear it once for a reaction and you can claim it as a business expense, just keep the receipt.
Love this idea!! I’m so doing it
You're saying that anyone with a RUclips channel can buy something to use for/while making a RUclips video and can then claim it as a business expense? There must be more to it than that.
hello, space cows! a second time you will hardly see such a thing! 😊
they dressin to impress-in
This has taken over our lives!!
It's absolutely disturbing how many people watch this episode and think Atherton is being sooooooooo romantic towards Inara and how out of line Mal was.
Omg REALLY?? How 😭 i was ready for mal to beat him up!
SPOILER!!!! The fear on Inara's face in the opening scene was genuine fear from Morena.
It's great to see you enjoying 'Firefly'. There is no such thing as a bad episode. One thing about Firefly is how quickly you can get to know a character. All it takes is just a few lines of solid dialog and an action or two. You already get a strong view of how unlikable Atherton is. Equally, how down-to-Earth and likable Lord Harrow is. Even the Lord that came to Kaylee's rescue from the bully girls. " ... I cannot abide useless people."
Kaylee looks just like the girl from final fantasy seven in this episode.
WHICH GIRL? AERITH?
@@NythicalReacts
Yes.
Had a feeling you'd get more than one kick out of this episode.
It was so fun to watch 😂
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Thanks for the love 🥰
I've been waiting for you to watch this specific episode to ask this: Any chance you will do a Kaylee cosplay?
I actually was thinking about this 😂
@NythicalReacts you'd be perfect for ittt!!
Her first scene outfit with the overalls and bear on the leg with the umbrella and grease on your face bwahahaha
How are you
I’m good how are you??
@@NythicalReacts I'm glad you're doing good I'm also doing good thanks
She didn't like wearing the dress.
would be nice if Rivers crazy antics had more of a purpose. like here unless it was explained in some behind the scenes i dont get the purpose of ripping labels off the cans and the jibberish shes spewing i think sometimes they did things just to make her seem off in the head rather than thinking her character out more. like it would have been amazing to be able to go back and listen to every word she says and have it all relate to something. instead.... its a mixed bag. sucks because most people just write her off as being nuts when for me she was the most intriguing character because of the mystery behind what happened to her. though watching this as it was released we didnt have the common courtesy of knowing how much of a savant she was before getting tricked into this academy mentioned in the first episode since Fox didnt air this episode till the show was already basically canceled. Even worse seeing all the scenes in the intro and even having seen the promotional trailers for the show and we get thrown into the train job as the first episode.
I think Joss Whedon has explained that the food labels had logos that were also on the equipment used to torture her at the academy.
Remember that we only got about 2/3rds of a single season, so there are numerous plot leads that could not be completed. I don't consider it a spoiler to point them out, inasmuch as they will never be completed. One is that she was ripping the Blue Sun logos off the cans. Blue Sun was a corporation responsible for much of the equipment used on her at the Academy. There will be another sharp reference to her aversion to the Blue Sun logo in a later episode. But unfortunately, that plotline never had a chance to be completed.
Someone gave you the Blue Sun explanation. There is also the question of do the label's really describe the contents, or the other way around? Like sending a bumpkin and a grease monkey to a fine ball and thinking they'll not stand out.. But you won't understand that since you think River spouts "gibberish". She was a little cryptic, but you could always get at least two thirds of what she was trying to say when these were aired. Maybe you're not as clever as you think you are.
4:02 Aaaw! Not even 2? 😞
7:21 Still "funny" When/If überclass ♀s in 2024+?
