Yeah. If you compare this to something like Star Trek: TNG it was 2-3 seasons (of 26 episodes) into that show before the characters really jelled and the relationships were fully established. But for Firefly they hit the ground running and never looked back.
lol, Sorry, Kirk is still top of the heap for me. (Probably because I go back a bit further than you.) But yeah, Mal is awesome. Probably the best Space Ship captain to come along in a long time. Still holds up. You certainly won't see a character like Mal in any of today's fair.
@@dallesamllhals9161 minor SPOILER for subsequent episodes: . . . . . you have to end the enslavement of humans before you have any hope of starting to end the enslavement of animals. peta has no chance in a verse where slaves on terraforming projects have "a prodigious death rate".
Ok I know circumstances were very different but also... Mal: Remember, shoot the man, not the horse. Dead horse is cover; live horse great pile of panic.
Mark this day in your calendar, everyone - yet another Browncoat is born! You might not know it yet, but you're in for a wild ride! There's all sorts of twists and cul-de-sacs, you're in for excitement, romance, swashbuckling, and a few tears along the way. And at the end, you'll consider yourself an honorary member of Serenity's crew, and a fellow Browncoat. So welcome to the 'verse, and enjoy the ride.
Wow, you got the relationship and the dynamic of the crew right from the start. A lot of people need a few episodes to get a grasp of it. Great attention to details. Looking real forward seeing you react to the rest of the show.
The people who are injured/die made informed choices as to why they were in that position (& most of them were unscrupulous as well -- R.I.P. Bendis, whose death usually gets a response as well). The horse was innocent. It's also not for nothing that one of the three things that serial killers have in common is the killing (sometimes torture & mutilation) of animals (usually small ones). People who have little to no compassion for animals don't tend to have compassion for humans either. Reactors (& viewers in general) being really upset when an animal is killed (or harmed in any way) is a good thing: their conscience is showing. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@@demoneyeslaharl well, tell me then, what decision did the horse make to end up where it did? every human that died in this episode has mostly made some rather clear decision to get to where they are....
"Out here on RUclips, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a camera would bring you work, a Patreon would help you keep it." Nathan Fillion was also on the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Also Two Guys and a Girl (and a Pizza Place), a few episodes of The Guild and Community, and Green Lantern in several DC direct to video animated movies (and kind of in an episode of The Daly Show).
And both Gina Torres and Alec Baldwin were in Angel as was Summer Glau in her only ever role before Firefly Christina Hendicks also was an extra in Angel.
Jewel Staite, playing Kaylee, was a regular actor on Stargate: Atlantis. And she detests strawberries. We also saw Morena Baccarin as a lizard woman on the television series "V" in the early 2000s. Welcome to Firefly. Looks like you've become a Browncoat already.
Kazzy, I am thrilled that you discovered Firefly at the same time that I discovered you. When Firefly first aired twenty-two years ago I was 49 and my son was 16. We were instant fans and even attended a Brown Coat event in our hometown. We still watch the DVDs together when we get a chance as well as play Firefly trivia. As you proceed through the episodes and then the movie, I predict you too will consider yourself a Brown Coat. Kazzy, I look forward to you hearing for the first time, "I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar." And then... the second time!
No Spoilers: There was a civil war between the Central Planets like Persephone and the Outer Worlds like Boros. The Central Planets are the Alliance and the Outer Worlds were the rebels known as the Browncoats. Basically the Alliance wanted central rule while the Browncoats wanted each planet to be mostly independent. Mal and Zoe fought for the Browncoats and they lost. As a result they are unable to find "legitimate" work within the Alliance as they are seen as criminals. Joss Whedon stated that he did not want to create another Star Trek. He didn't want to tell a story about high ideals, exploration or diplomacy. He wanted to create a story about working class individuals. He wanted to tell the story about people that the Starship Enterprise would fly past without every noticing. The crew are starving. It is not something that is obvious but throughout the series there are references to it. Wash's idea of a "vacation" is a "meal with some sort of food." They buy fuel for the ship to "keep flying" before they buy food. What they usually eat is basically flavored tofu. Mal refers to it as "Protein in all the colors of the rainbow. That is why the Strawberry and other fresh vegetables are such luxuries. Badger nonchalantly peeling an apple is to show that he can afford such a luxury. It is why the "treasure" turns out to concentrated foodstuff with vitamin supplements. It is a treasure because it is literally more valuable on the Outer Worlds than gold because one cannot eat gold. It is also why whenever you see them having a meal it is treated as a celebration.
One other comment I will make is about Gina Torres. She doesn't get near enough credit for her acting chops and in particular her non-verbal acting. Pay attention to her. One look at her and she sets the mood for the scene. Often she doesn't speak but if you watch she will be loosening her gun or moving to get a better angle on whomever Mal is dealing with. Someone else mentioned that she seldom refers to Mal by his name in front of the crew. It is always "the Captain." This is to reinforce Mal's authority. She also doesn't criticize him in front of the crew but when she's displeased she'll give him a look or a "respectful comment" and you'll have no doubt what she really thinks. In a very real sense this entire series is Zoe and Mal's tale. It is the tale of the war buddies. They are not lovers. They are not simply friends. They are comrades in arms. They are people who put their lives in the others hands over and over again and survived when so many others did not. It may seem at time that Gina Torres isn't given much to do. But she makes EVERY scene she is in better though her non-verbal acting. I cannot praise her enough.
Before Firefly, I saw Gina Torres in this cheesy little show called Cleopatra 2525. It was late night filler, campy and over the top. The premise was based on a stripper emerging from cryo stasis 500 plus years in the future and joining the (literally) underground resistance to a totalitarian post-apocalyptic dictator. Gina played one of the freedom fighters, and I absolutely loved her in it. Bad dialogue, ridiculous scenarios, lingerie-league costumes, physically impossible combat, she spun all that chaff into gold. Just SO talented. I definitely wanted to see what she could do with better material. Zoe is one of my favorite characters in Firefly, for all the reasons you describe. Gina embodied this character so perfectly, she may not have much to say but she's always worth paying attention.
@@melissahughes4205 Yeah. I love good actors. I love actors who make other actors' performances better. Roy Scheider is one of those guys. Whether it be _The Russia House, The French Connection, or Marathon Man_ he is not the star but he makes those movies so much better with his acting. Gina Torres is also one of those actors. She's likely never to be a star or to win awards but she a genuine actor who makes everything she co-stars in better for her presence.

Firefly is a really good show! Unfortunately, it ran on Fox, which was notorious for shuffling good shows around and then canceling them just when they started getting good. The cast for this show had great chemistry!
Exciting day!!! I love your reactions, and now I get to see you watch one of my favorite shows. I hope, and trust that you will love it as much as I, and all of my fellow Browncoats do.
It was cancelled mid-season. A season on network TV then was 22 to 24 episodes. Firefly only got 14 episodes. It was cancelled in December. It should have ran through the Spring. But they did get a theatrical film that picks up some of the plot threads left dangling.
Many shows got around 13 episode seasons, particularly for their first season. Buffy for one major example. Many others. Firefly had a 13 episode first season approved. Then the network wanted them to make a new pilot, hence 14 episodes. It got the full season made and was not approved for more seasons/cancelled. But it got the full season it was initially approved for (though several of the episodes were not aired).

Kazzy, welcome to the Browncoats! You're in for a hell of a ride. One you won't forget for the rest of your life. Looking forward to seeing your journey through this story.
I'm looking forward to your reactions to this series. Oh, the sinks and toilets are what's normally used in US Navy submarines due to the lack of space.
When this aired new on network TV, I watched it every week. But, when trying to tell others that, it was both a space science fiction show and a western with firearms and horses TV show... they would look at me and, just shake their heads. Then all too soon, this TV show was canceled and, the episodes that did air were never re-shown as re-runs. It was not until many years later when it was picked-up by the Sci-Fi channel that this TV shown developed a large following. For decades, I have owned the full series on DVD and, I watch it several times a year (smile...smile).
That’s a new record… a brown coat on the first episode 🙏❤️🙏 I’ve shared this series and the movie with lots of friends and family they all loved it too… the sarcasm is on another dimension
This is one of my 2 favorite sci-fi westerns, along with The Adventurers of Brisco County Junior! Kaylee is the heart of the series! This was such a great and fun series! It was killed way too soon by morons! You won't really find out about the Reavers till the movie!
I love the subtle things that make the reavers terrifying. Beyond zoo's description of an encounter, like Inara preparing a leathal injection or Jayne visibility shaking as he loads a weapon. We are terrified at the mention of them from here out
This is my introduction to your channel. Castle is more rewarding after watching Firefly, due to references to and guest stars from the latter. I'm subscribed based on this.
Now you see we are... likelong fans of this series. We Browncoats will always want to rewatch this, and see new people react to it. Sometimes we fight. Sometimes we love. Sometimes they're in their bunk. ;)
Wow watching you watch and your reactions is so emotional. Your reaction to the Serenity movie made me cry. And this reaction series is tuning up to be the same. Thank you.
Since you've seen Castle. If you recall one of the halloween episodes, he (Castle) is dressed as a space cowboy. His costume is the same as as what Mal wears.
On a tactical level, Mal reacts intuitively- her's a problem, resolve it RIGHT NOW, quickly. There's a horse in the way, shoot it. Somebody's holding a hostage, don't negotiate, just shoot 'em down. There's gonna be another problem aling in a second, you have to get clear of this one, quick, or you'll be overwhelmed and dead. He also guesses correctly most of the time- it's how he survived the War.
SO glad that you're starting Firefly! This is going to be fabulous! 🤗 If no one else has mentioned it, although Kaylee loves strawberries, Jewel Staite (the lovely actress playing her) does not. It's all acting. 😋
this show shines when it comes to the clever writing, story and characters and less about junp scares, cgi fights and action and trying to shock startle you
You were close about Inara. A Companion can be seen equivalent to a Geisha, or an 18th century French Courtesan. They have high social status, and are know for their education & culture. It takes great training to become a Companion. Mal is rude to her because (as you perceived) he has strong feelings for her. He also respects her life choices, which means she's not the involvement type. Thus the conflict he feels, which he tries to cover with cheap insults. Every character has a deep past. For example, Mal was wearing a cross during the battle, but now he shows hostility to a preacher.
If you go back and watch Castle again after watching this show, you'll notice a lot of Firefly Easter eggs peppered throughout the show. Especially early on.
The opening scene, the Battle of Serenity Valley, shows where Mal lost his faith in pretty much everything. So, his feelings for Innara are something he does not trust, and he is afraid of betting hurt. So he keeps her at a distance. That is why he treats here like he does.
If you watched Castle before Firefly, then you would have missed some of the references in Castle that Nathan made to Firefly. Notably when going to a fancy dress party and he dressed up as a space cowboy.
Its hilarious, every woman who reviews this complains that Mal doesnt tell Inara he is interested, and NONE of them complain that Inara doesn't admit her interest in Mal.
Why would they? We're expected to make the first move. That behavior is as old as humans. It's our ancient role to stand between danger and women and children, and that's reflected in this expectation.
@sirmoonslosthismind So they say. OPs comment indicates differently. 170 thousand years of human behavior isn't easily rejected. This isn't a value judgment, I'm glad we have the luxury to do things differently if we choose.
You would really love to read up on Firefly fan history and love. The line from Gina Tores is so apropos in this instance. “Like having warm honey poured over your naked body” or words to that effect.
Discovered by scientists in 2020, 34Tauri(2020) is a star cluster, of the likes of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. It consists of five main sequence stars, around which orbit seven protostars, seven gas giants, three separate asteroid belts, seventy-five planets, and one hundred forty-nine moons.[1] Four of the main sequence stars orbit a central star. All the worlds that make up the 'Verse have two names, a Sino (Chinese) name and Anglo (English) name. Sometimes, only one is used officially. This is not the case with the five main sequence stars. The Sino names of the five stars are based on the old-world concept of the Five Chinese Constellations. The Anglo names are given by the actual temperature-spectral color of the sun, with the exception of two which are yellow, named Georgia and Kalidasa.
Don't know if it has been mentioned but Nathan Fillion also played, "James Fredrich Ryan" from Minnesota in the great war film, "Saving Private Ryan." He was the wrong Ryan of course. Again, y'all be safe.
So there's a bit of a fan theory that gets thrown around about this episode. It's possible that Mal wasn't just being mean when he lied to Simon about Kaylee dying, but was testing him. Even after the threat Mal made earlier, Simon didn't think about himself or his own safety, but ran to go check on his patient first. That's the kind of thing Mal would value in a potential cremate after all.
Telling Simon that Kaylee was dead was to test him. If Simon had worried more about saving himself (like steal the second shuttle), then he would have been dropped off at the nearest port ( or even spaced), but he cared more about his patient, therefor he can stay.
There were a load of Firefly references in Castle, because Nathan Fillion took every opportunity to work them in. See if you can spot them retrospectively!
Thank you far reacting to what I consider the best TV series that almost was. Enjoy the ride! Also, yeah. There's no foreplay with this ep. It was intended to be the pilot, but Fox decided they wanted something else. No intro for this one, but you do get one on the episodes that actually aired.
Something people often miss: When Mal tells the doctor that Kaylee is dead, yes he's messing with him (and the show is messing with *us* of course) - but he's also testing his character. The fact that Simon obviously really cared about her - he raced off to see if there was anything he could do - was a factor in Mal offering them a place on the ship later.

I do have some sermons prepared, if you prefer. One has lepers!"
Yes, mon capitan, but that's not how the conversation went in this video. Hence my use of the word editing.
Ooh, looking forward to this one; one of my favorite shows of all time.
It’s a great series and I’m glad to see your wonderful reactions to it!
So glad you are reacting to this, I think you will enjoy it so much. Can't wait to follow your journey with it!
Before long you will absolutely love these characters.
And nice T-shirt. I have one just like it.
Holy Carp!!! One of my top five reactors finally getting to Firefly! Welcome to the Browncoats, Kazz
That’s a new record… a brown coat on the first episode 🙏❤️🙏 I’ve shared this series and the movie with lots of friends and family they all loved it too… the sarcasm is on another dimension
Mal didn't kill the horse. Patience did when she tried to use it for cover.
Mal just carried the bullet a while.
"A live horse is chaos, a dead horse is cover" -Mal at some point, I'm pretty sure.
@@isaackellogg3493 Nice reference.
Mark sheppard, he is in EVERYTHING. he's 'that guy'.
Sometimes they're in their bunk. ;)
You mentioned the dinosaurs in the first show. The dinosaur scene was part of Alan Tudyk’s audition. That was part of how he got the job.
I feel the same about the horse dying T.T. I'm glad you were so into it! Its a great show!
10:30 that’s an apple peeler and corer and slicer. They’ve been around since around 1900. The 1800s models only peeled.
Love the Zeppelin shirt, and great to see you back
I have a Shirt that says;
He was my Captain, before He was your Castle. Thou, Castle was an Awesome Show.
Great reaction. Loved how you just let the story unfold for you without a never ending stream of constant speculation.
New Firefly reactor?!? Instant sub!
SO glad that you're starting Firefly! This is going to be fabulous! 🤗
If no one else has mentioned it, although Kaylee loves strawberries, Jewel Staite (the lovely actress playing her) does not. It's all acting. 😋
really loved this reaction to this beloved show.
this show shines when it comes to the clever writing, story and characters and less about junp scares, cgi fights and action and trying to shock startle you
Firefly and its sequel movie Serenity are one of my favourite shows along with with the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.
"If you like her, dude, tell her."
If I had a penny for every Firefly fan who said this in the first episode....
I'd have a decent amount of money.
Excellent choice
So happy seeing you react to stuff like Firefly again Kazzy.😃🤗🫶✌️
Yesssss...!! I needed more Kazzy so this definitely works lol. 👍
A famous member of 'Barney Millers' police team was Ron Glass...aka...Shepherd Booke...=))
I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
The opening scene, the Battle of Serenity Valley, shows where Mal lost his faith in pretty much everything. So, his feelings for Innara are something he does not trust, and he is afraid of betting hurt. So he keeps her at a distance. That is why he treats here like he does.
Nice to see you again. Its been a long time since Cobra Kai.❤
Ah, another firefly reaction. Shiny!
Damn right he shot the horse. The best move he had to make
Happy Valentine's Day 🌹❤️🌻
Just you wait Young Lady...great reaction, we got us a new Browncoat, and you have a new sub...can't wait to watch you take this ride!
This show made a lot of people famous who were very little known before.
Yay! Firefly! Welcome to the 'Verse!
If you watched Castle before Firefly, then you would have missed some of the references in Castle that Nathan made to Firefly. Notably when going to a fancy dress party and he dressed up as a space cowboy.
The chemistry among this cast is unlike any other.
Oh this show was hardcore all right: hc character & quality driven, which makes it special ;)
@@blairhaffly1777
um maybe because a majority of people have rejected those "ancient" gender roles?
@sirmoonslosthismind So they say. OPs comment indicates differently. 170 thousand years of human behavior isn't easily rejected. This isn't a value judgment, I'm glad we have the luxury to do things differently if we choose.
"A knights tail", you should have a vote
Hey there, glad to see TV reactions again. Hope to see Peacemaker soon
Such a great show! ♥ Kaylee!
This an amazing show! The only bad thing about it is when it ends way too soon. I'll be back for all your Firefly reactions..
You would really love to read up on Firefly fan history and love. The line from Gina Tores is so apropos in this instance. “Like having warm honey poured over your naked body” or words to that effect.
Firefly and Zeppelin, I like your style!😎👍
There's a world of difference between a "crewmate" and a "cremate", although up to that point, Simon could have ended up as either. Jus' sayin'... 🤣
Firefly awesome 😊
Welcome to the Browncoats. 13 hours of bliss and a lifetime of withdrawal
Watching Firefly and wearing Led Zeppelin shirts... Hell yeah!
I didn't know you spoke Chinese.
Welcome to the verse !
"It's just Serenity" though ;)
😊 love this series and awesome reaction 🎉
