“I like all of these people!” And that right there is, IMO, the biggest appeal of the show-the cast and its chemistry together is some of the best I have ever seen. It was there right from the beginning, too.
Right, With almost all "big cast" shows you connect to 1 or 2 characters first, and than it takes lots of episodes to get to love the others (or sometimes you don't care for some at all). With Firefly they manage that you seem to "know" all of them by the end of the first episode. And all of them have at least parts in their personality you can love or appreciate. That both great writing and great chemistry between the actors.
Characters are great ... but the universe and technology is stupid. There could be tons of problems (=episodes) generated from technical problems (cf. "Gas"), but Joss Whedon has no interest in that and thinks TECHNOBABBLE is enough.
Too bad the beginning wasn't shown until the end, and Fox made them hurriedly write and shoot the weakest episode in the series ("The Train Job") as a substitute pilot.
while its been said, i would like to add by giving an honorary welcome to you, the newest member of the brown coat family! it is a joy to have you among us and it will be loads of fun reacting to each episode (plus the movie afterwards) as you can already tell with this first episode. this journey ahead of you is going to be an awesome one!! 🍻🙌🥳
Firefly is a perfect example of great story telling, character development, and world building the story unfolds without exposition, you're given all you really need to know at the time to follow the story but it allows time for you to get a feel for the characters and they are what's important to the story. Great reaction and look forward to further episodes
Firefly premiered in the U.S. on the Fox network on September 20, 2002. By mid-December, Firefly had averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and was 98th in Nielsen ratings. It was canceled after 11 of the 14 produced episodes were aired. Despite the relatively short life span of the series, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD and has large fan support campaigns. It won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series. TV Guide ranked the series at No. 5 on their 2013 list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon". The post-airing success of the show led Whedon and Universal Pictures to produce Serenity, a 2005 film which continues the story from the series. The Firefly franchise expanded into other media, including comics and a role-playing game.
I love the way she is already cherishing the time that she's spending in this world, with these people. I felt 100% the same way - every episode was a gift.
Historically, the origin of reivers comes from your neck of the woods, Dawn Marie. They were the people who lived adjacent to the border between Scotland and England in the 13th to 17th centuries. The name itself comes from Middle English as a term for "plunder or raid." They were often tolerated by both governments as a buffer against invasion by the two countries, and often fought on one side or the other. These were hard, predatory people who did what they had to survive. Very interesting history, including the development of the March laws. They were also known as moss-troopers and Borderers throughout early literature.
Welcome to the Firefly train, sit back and enjoy the ride. There has never been a show like this before and there likely never will be, but it's so very worth it.
OG Firefly fan here. Used to chat to the cast and crew on the old Fox TV message boards and Nathan Fillion even shared his bean dip recipe with us! Those were the days! 😄My favorite show of all time.
Thank you for reacting to my most favorite television series ever. As others have said, the characters are what make you fall in love with this show. And the storyline of the series and the individual episodes are wonderful too.
Always a joy to see someone find this masterpiece of sci-fi storytelling. To this day, I have yet to find a crew that feels so connected and caring towards one another. It's a bleeding shame we didn't get five to six seasons of these amazing characters. Whedon did a fine job of squeezing it all into a 2 hour movie, but it's heartbreaking to think what could have been. Plus, Mal simply ending the lawman without breaking stride is one of the most bad ass moments in film.
Nathan Fillion is from Edmonton and was a young actor on the Fringe, a theatre festival, stages. My wife and I on our first date, watched a young Nathan in a play called Die-Nasty. When you're done this journey you will proudly call yourself a Browncoat.
This is one my favorite series ever and it was SO FUN to see you watch it and fall in love with it as it went on. You're right, one of the greatest casts ever. Also you may have recognized Capt. Reynolds from "Saving private Ryan"...... he was the first, and wrong, Pvt. Ryan they came across.
I can honestly say that this series had one of the best cast I've ever seen. Throughout the series it seemed that the relationships between the characters were real, that is part of why this is such an excellent series.
As soon as I saw your reaction, I immediately started thinking of the multiple scenes that you will love. More importantly, the scenes that will make you laugh. Mal returning to the ship and shooting the bad guy. That hooked me on this series. Enjoy the ride.
Yay! Great reaction! ETA: That feeling you had when you thought the episode was over and you wanted more, before you realized that there was more; that's where a lot of us have been living for... 15 years or so.
I love Book so much. His line of how the journey is worthier than the destination is something I identify with a lot, because that's basically how I see video games, movies/shows, and books. Even if I've gone through them before, the journey through it is still amazing for me. Sometimes more, because then I can catch a lot more details I missed before.
I'll add my name as well in welcoming you to this franchise. I agree with your observations about the cast/crew. not only is the cast perfect for the roles they play, the roles themselves are written masterfully. The script, the banter, everything just fits perfectly. Enjoy the ride!
It took me to the end of the second episode before the concept of the show clicked for me. It's great to see it click half way through the first episode for you. You're already a fellow Browncoat. o7
Just what you needed Dawn Marie. A space western with a touch of friends. I was going to say you're going to love all these characters but it looks like you already do. 😄
My favorite series ever. Loved your reaction. Unlike so many shows, before the first episode is over you're in love with the show and care about the characters. Enjoy this ride, it's great!
Sincerely, have you EVER seen anything that short that makes you fall in love with a cast, crew, possible-villain, etc,!? There is so much story to be told! And it’s such a journey and we’re all so excited for you to go on it!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
One of the coolest things about the way its filmed, the special effects are sometimes focusing or catching up in the frame. This makes you see it as a camera and not a special effect.
Yay Dawn Marie, this is going to be great fun! As a Firefly/Serenity veteran I'm looking forward to taking this journey with you. Everyone stumbles with names and places the first episode or two. They will all seem like old friends to you by the end of the series. And yes, this is my favorite TV series, ever!!
❤Shepherd ❤ I'm always so happy to see someone discover this gem, this is going to be a shiny journey! 😎 OH! And Star Wars easter egg, if you look very closely when Inara is docking with Serenity, you can see an Imperial shuttle taking off in the background.
Dawn is reacting to Firefly? Her channel just got bumped up to the bell with the alarm. I love this series, especially when it picks up, starting around episode 4. From then on, the fun never truly ends until the series does. As for my favorite characters, I liked them all, but I gotta show some love to Badger, Saffron, Bridget, and Yolanda, who despite not being regular characters, contributed greatly to my enjoyment of the series. Remember, no spoilers anyone!
Still one of my absolute favorite shows, and I think this is the best first episode to perfectly introduce all charakters. You will definitely love this.
This is such a fun, albeit short, series. No spoilers, just be sure to watch the movie, “Serenity,” after you finish the TV series. I love your reactions and am a total sucker for a lovely Scottish voice!
Did you notice that Jayne is played by the actor who plays Animal Mother in Full Metal Jacket? Also, I have the feeling that you'd love Red Dwarf; it's like Firefly meets The Young Ones!

I have said it before and ill say it agaun. This is my favorite seies i have ever seen...and it ALWAYS brings me joy to see someone fall in Love wih it for the first time.
Seeing that you are watching this series, I wish I could subscribe 100 times. There are a few other shows that approach the epicness of this one, but in my personal opinion, none of them manage to top it. You're going to love it.
Just gonna add my voice to the chorus of those cheering for the fact that Dawn Marie is reacting to this amazing franchise.💯
It's a beautiful sound 😁
@@DawnMarieX And don't worry about all the names and stuff, you will pick it up...besides, it is only one season and one movie. 😁

It's a really good cast and everyone is excellent. You know it's a good cast when they can even make an a-hole like Jayne likeable. 😂
Too bad the beginning wasn't shown until the end, and Fox made them hurriedly write and shoot the weakest episode in the series ("The Train Job") as a substitute pilot.
