I did this timing belt, water pump and tensioner replacement yesterday. It was totally doable! Took my about 5 hours but I was really taking my time and documenting the process. In my case I actually didn't need to remove the alternator. But other than that I followed this video exactly. Thank you for this upload. Great video. Also I would recommend anyone doing this type of work to purchase a Bentley manual def helps as a reference for torque values etc.
This has to be the best video on youtube explaining a timing belt replacement, and certainly in the running for best explaination of anything mechanical on youtube as well. That said, I just did the timing belt on a p2 volvo and have to do this job on my 2017 jetta 1.4 tsi. The volvo timing belt replacement had a lot less steps, but VW certainly has the waterpump part down. Thanks for the great video.
I'm not a mechanic by any means but it's a year now and still no issue or leaks, But you sir are a true teacher thanks a bunch. took me 3 hours. saved me 800 freedom units. 👍👍✌✌
Great video! Harbor Freight represent!! (except for the snap-on torque wrench ;-) ... for those asking, this is a 2.0L / 4-cylinder, better known as a 2.slow. Yes, Jetta's still use timing belts... except for the 1.8 TSI and GLI? Really great production quality.
Awesome video!!! I wouldn’t have done it without your help. Amazing!! It really takes time to do this job and hat off to all mechanics. You guys work hard and deserve respect.
Thank you to this awesome mechanic and team at TRQ!!! This video helped me install my timing belt on my 2015 base model (manual) Jetta 2.0. The only thing I did different was not remove the alternator which saved time for sure. (I only needed to remove the top bolt of the alt' in order to remove that power steering fluid bracket which also locks in the serpentine belt tensioner.)
Great job dude. Used a Continental Pro Plus with the metal impeller... went super. But total foot pound on the engine support please... rough estimate would be fine.
Extremely helpful video man! I would note that on my 2014 Jetta S 2.0L (CBPA) 5spd manual required T30's for the lower timing belt covers. I REALLY WISH VW would put timing marks on the crank sprocket and block. I've verified timing now 3 times putting the harmonic balancer and lower timing belt cover back on and I've marked it, but it still skeeves me out not having manufacturer's timing marks on at least 2 points of reference on the actual head, block, and both sprockets.
Just want to thank you so much for providing this video. I was able to complete the timing belt and water pump removal and installation. Just took the car out for a test run and it sounds so much better, one thing I would have loved to have seen is how to install the crank & cam seal... What are your thoughts on that becoming an issue, I also watch the Scottykilmer channel he recommends AT 205 reseal. which I'm going to start using since I didn't change the seal, do you have any thoughts about that idea? I currently have no leaks with almost 190,000 mi. Timing belt had several teeth missing, I was lucky that things did not become worse,! Local shops were charging- 3200-3800 in Texas😬
So question if I marked the bottom cog and when I was putting the belt it spun counter clockwise how do I get it back in that position so nothing is wrong or is it ok like that? Rly don’t know what to do from here don’t want to break anything
I have a 2014 vwjetta se 1..8 turbo and my engine is different than the one you are working on. My alternator is mounded on the front side of the engine and don't require removal to acce the timing cover. Also my dip stick is in front of the timing cover. And my engine don't have hole in the side wall fended to access the lower motor mount. There is no lower motor mount. And my teacher is center bolt releas. Mt timing covering clip on its bolt on from top to bottom. Why such a difference in motors mine is a 2014 jetta se 1.8 turbo my crank has a single 1"bolt im trying to understand why such a big difference in the engine. Can you please help with yr insite? Thanks
I think the moral of this video is "Never buy a Volkswagen" - they're engineered to bust all your knuckles and maximize mechanic time on the most basic repairs.

Thank you for a very high quality video.
Great video! Thanks for your time in making it.
Great how to. But the motor mount bolts should be replaced because they are stretch bolts.
Thanks Lenny!!! Just completed this a couple days ago.
Amazing video!!! Thanks a bunch!! You are really thorough on every step!
There were several different engines available for these years of jetta.
Thank you so much
You are the pro
Great step by step Thank you, looking for that Special Tool as you mentioned for the belt tension pully ?????
great video sir thanks for sharing
Excellent video, thank you.
Thank you
Great video
Great in depth video! Thanks!
Its best to replace those engine mount bolts. They are one time use stretch bolts.

Helped out a ton! thanks.
This car use the pink coolant o the green one? I'm confused because the dealer sold the pink one ...
I’m being told by my mechanic he needs to lift my engine out of the bay and what not, I honestly can do this myself
They're just trying to upsell you on the work. It's cheaper if you do it and a learning experience
Nice! Thank you for sharing!
Is 1 hour and 11 minutes what an experienced mechanic should take doing this job or was the video edited (shortened)?
So question if I marked the bottom cog and when I was putting the belt it spun counter clockwise how do I get it back in that position so nothing is wrong or is it ok like that? Rly don’t know what to do from here don’t want to break anything
Great. Video
what cleaner is used at @35:45?
Can somebody touch on what to do set the crankshaft timing if there are no marks on the crank pulley?
This for the 2.5 L engine?
Is this the same as a 2017 1.4t jetta ?

When does this service need to be done? I have a 2017 1.4 tsi with 100k.
What coolant did y'all (people in the comments) use ?
Stupid question but this is for Jetta TDI right?
How about for a 2.5?
I remember my friend had a car like this and the only person that could fix it right was from Acapulco 🇲🇽.
Great video but it could have been a 30 minute video if you did not have to show me every nut and bolt you removed.
Gotta see one of these videos where a tty bolt finally breaks.😅
you guys never put the engine size in your video titles - makes things much harder for people
What engine is this
Definitely not the 2.0t that's in my gli must be the 2.5
It’s the 2.0 Natural Aspirated non-turbo engine/8 Valve Gas.
A lot of hard work just to put the wrong coolant in it at the end…
I don’t think you really need to remove the alternator or coolant hose.
The antifreeze comes out through the water pump hole anyway 🤷🏻♂️
Is this an interference engine?
I think the moral of this video is "Never buy a Volkswagen" - they're engineered to bust all your knuckles and maximize mechanic time on the most basic repairs.
Thats a MK4 old Vw not a newer 2014 plus ! They have a chain not belt !
The TDI 2014 Jetta has a belt.
I'm sure its a nice video but an engine size in the title would be useful. Not what I'm looking for. Guess you get more clicks though.
