I do some freelance production help for a few, listen to a ton, and want to start - I think it will continue to grow as a medium. Stuck on whether to make an extension of my channel, something different, or put it off entirely to focus on the channel for now. Great vid, will def be sharing this as a resource for others that ask me questions about starting.

THANK YOU! Finally a video which mentions that you have to "record your voice" and that is your podcast, no other video mentions this important early step.
How the process should be taught:
Explain first what a podcast is..."a recording of your voice" - then you can go ahead with the others.
Seriously, to assume people know what a "podcast" even is, is failure to properly inform, as an "information" video. Just because someone drives a car, doesn't mean they know how to put air in the tires, and you can't assume they do.
What other video's on this topic lack, is full explanation - when teaching, informing, you must treat the audience like adolsents...in the sense of giving ALL information, even if the majority has heard it before and already are previously informed.
Example - if I say to my mother (65) the word "podcast" it means nothing to her. If I said to my mother "a radio show" or "voice recording" she would know automatically what I mean. BUT still she won't know how to record her voice unless it is on a reel to reel machine. SO, these video's must clarify that on computers, the process is: upload a recording program on your smart device, (your "reel to reel" - in older language) this will be called a file (instead of film), which you then save on your smart device and can access at all times.
It is this early step and lack of explanation, that has all other video's I have watched on this topic, limited.
Analogy - If I were teaching how to bake, I can't assume the student knows what an oven is, or a bowl, or a mixer, or even what brown sugar is - I have to explain it like I would to a 4 year old child. Right down to how to turn the oven dials and read the baking instructions properly.
    Does this make sense?
It should, you were taught this way by professional teachers when in school.
And although this video did explain the "recording portion" it was vague, didn't mention that it is a saved file, and it was near the end of the video. When really, it should come right after (gathering idea's) at the beginning.

  • @glowingeye

Small tip regarding the plosives: talk into your microphone at an angle, where you don‘t breathe directly at it. I do this with my PodMic, it‘s not in front of but at the side of my mouth so I kinda talk „over“ the top of it. Works quite well in my opinion, but I‘m not a pro in audio, too ;) Of course, I would prefer a filter and they aren‘t expensive, it‘s just a little workaround.
    Also: great video, Becki!

Thank you for this video!!!! HUUUGGGGEEEE important but small point for VIDEO podcast -> make sure your DSLR can record past 20 minutes. Like Becki and Chris, I'm upgrading to the Sony A7sIII and a big reason for me is there are no recording limits. I make interviews about the people I meet while traveling the world (biked across America, southern India during Covid, flying around, etc.) and a 5 minute segment may be 45+ minutes of recorded content. A simple google for recording limits + camera model will let you know if there is a cut off.

I just subscribed and I also just made my first podcast albeit it is in post production and not uploaded anywhere but I appreciate the information, well done. Keep in mind, I am new to podcasting but not RUclips for I have had a few channels in the past so with podcasting, my confusion is that when I went to Apple Podcasts, I went with the thought process of being able to upload my podcast there. However, I found out that you can upload your RSS feed to Apple Podcast from another place that actually hosts your podcast. I don't understand why I can't simply create a Podcast directly with Apple Podcast. It seems like a lot of steps but maybe I am missing something.

I used to have a podcast with a friend, we began it using a Samson Meteor Mic and my 2014 MacBook Pro. We were still in college, so we had access to a recording booth every once in a while and that's were we recorded. Later on a friend had a "studio" where he set up 4 mics and a Zoom H4 which he let us use for free, but we always mentioned his photo/video business. Audio was edited either in Audacity or Final Cut Pro, yeah, not the conventional way to edit audio, but it did the trick. We used Spreaker as a host because at the time it offered 10 hours of hosting, and our episodes were 30 to 40 minutes long. We got lucky that we had access to some gear, but honestly, we did ok with that Samson Mic and my MacBook. So, yeah, all you need is the idea, and basic gear/software.

My first time here. Becki, you are compellingly attractive. So much so, that I feel I should prevent myself from becoming addicted to you. LOL
So, Hello! And farewell! LoL xoxo

I was just looking and I can and have some of this gear ⚙ But This video is not beginner friendly. The price point is more set to the person ready to upgrade, Not Beginner at all

You spent way too much time telling us about how important keeping the mic closer to our mouths is but you brushed over the hosting platform part like its no big deal. The video didnt serve as a balanced guide

Dear listeners remember - nobody will listen to your podcast if you start now. You'll get 20 listens per episode for the next 3 years. Very soon you will realize that the only way to grow your podcast is by inviting other well known podcasters. But none of them will want to even respond to your email invitations and follow-ups and follow-follow-ups. You will send 400 invitations and 3 people will reply. Be ready for that. Ask yourself how it will affect your mental health and your self-esteem. Ask yourself whether it's worth it.

What a cynical and pessimistic view. Just because you have a defeatist mentality does not mean it's true for everyone. The vast majority of successful people started out with nothing.

What is wrong with everyone else's videos, uploads and podcasts?
They're NOT as helpful, inspirational, and informative as any that you are uploading. Plus, the last 5 video uploads are repeaters....you watch them once, glean the basics, watch them again, grab a few more bits, and so on and so forth. More views are good for the channel, right?
In case you hadn't guessed, I'm loving the content that you are creating on the channel right now (and over on Tuxedo Time - where we wear tuxedos, and it is time - podcast edition).
Oh, and cool shacket, even with the water stain.....and the silver eyebrows that ocassionally appeared in the shot were a nice addition - I know they're just a reflection of the downlighting soft-box in the lens of your glasses.
Kudos to Skillshare as well for noticing your skills and recruiting you as a host for one of their courses - with many more to follow too, hopefully.
Lastly, the tech guy you had on.....has he done any modelling? He looks familiar. 😀
