She was my dad's 2nd cousin. Neither I nor my dad ever knew her, but my grandfather spent time around her and her parents.

Frances has a wonderful singing voice.
I sang this old song tonight in `The Lord Edward` pub , in Dublin, up stairs session, I think they liked it, i certainly enjoyed singing it as best i could with the help of some pints of the black stuff, Slainte.
One of those special movie clips. Sophisticated. Great song introduced. Depression era. Frances nailed it, it's a classic.

Frances sang this song in one of the Bob Hope USO shows during WWII, and as she announced she was about to sing, "I'm in the Mood for Love," one soldier said, "You've come to the right place, baby!"

This film clip is a real gem!
Actually the whole movie is quite good. Raoul Walsh was very talented and Alice Faye is insanely good-loking.

One of my favorites.
For some reason Francis had been taken off both apple music and Spotify! Its a total shame. I first heard her with Bing and Louie singing Penny's from heaven. I fell in love with these old movie stars, jazz and the whole era! My true favorite era for music!
To me it was her singing "Broadway Rythm". I was hooked, completely.
And I thought Penny was from Dubuque.
Lovely voice, great song.

Bob Hope recalled that when Hope and his team performed in a USO Tour for the troops in World War 2, Hope said Langford got the biggest laughs ever - when Hope introduced her onstage, asking what she was going to sing. Langford replied, “I’m in the mood for love”. One of the soldiers in the audience shouted “You came to the right place, baby!!” ...Rowby

Raft's reaction in that scene makes no sense. That was a great rendition of this song by Frances.
If you're not familiar with Raft's work, you won't know he was famous for his 'expressionless' face, which came about as a result of his prior career as a professional dancer. Supposedly, after a dance partner's husband told him smiling made him 'look goofy' during performances, he decided to keep his face 'mask-like' and mysterious, aside from perhaps a flicker of emotion in his eyes. Carried into the movies, this could be highly effective (in his role as the hit man Guino, in Scarface) or strangely out of place, as here, where Ms. Langford is obviously singing from the heart, telling him she's in love with him....and only elicits a thousand-yard stare.
A few scenes later, she sings it to him again, and then they embrace and fall in love. It's part of the plot that she has fallen for him but he's all business...til the end of the movie...
