Today we will go on speaking about grammar, and the present simple tense. We will talk about another auxiliary verb (helping verb) that is very important in all the tenses
Its TO BE
Lets have a look at all the forms of the verb to be in The Present Simple Tense
To be:
I am I’m
He is He’s
She is She’s
It is it’s
We are We’re
You are You’re
They are They’re
We need to make some sentences:
a doctor
I am a doctor. Am I a doctor?
A sailor
He is a sailor. Is he a sailor?
A dancer
She is a dancer. Is she a dancer?
A notebook
It is a notebook. Is it a notebook?
A musician
We are musicians. Are we musicians?
An engineer
Pronoun you
You are an engineer. Are you an engineer?
You are engineers. Are you engineers?
A teacher
They are teachers. Are they teachers?
Negative statements with the verb to be in the Present Simple Tense
All we need in this case is to put NOT after a helping verb TO BE. We can say: (it better to use in conversation the second variant)
I am not - I’m not
He is not - he isn’t
She is not - she isn’t
It is not - it isn’t
We are not - we aren’t
You are not - you aren’t
They are not - they aren’t
Lets make some sentences:
How to make negative questions???? We need to put a helping verb with particle not at the first place, and leave the sentence without changes…….
I am not a driver. Am I not a driver?
He isn’t a sailor. Isn’t he a sailor?
She isn’t a dancer. Isn’t she a dancer?
It isn’t a notebook. Isn’t it a notebook?
We aren’t misicians. Aren’t we musicians?
You aren’t engineers. Aren’t you engineers?
They aren’t teachers. Aren’t they teachers?
A statement - She is my friend.
A question - Is she my friend?
A negative statement - She isn’t my friend.
A negative question - Isn’t she my friend?
Homework:
A statement - He is at school. Betty is at the market today.
