- Gentle Giant | "Betcha Thought We Couldn't Do It" (Remix bySteven Wilson Remix)
Order: linktr.ee/gentlegiantband
Produced by Cantera Studio & Studio Liftmuziek
Lyrics:
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
And if you did we wouldn't try
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
But if we didn't we would die
We built our house stone by stone
Little help, we were on our own
Made the town, torn it down
Now you know, tell me how it feels
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
And if you did we wouldn't try
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
But if we didn't we would die
We've been waiting such a long long time
To fit the pattern, fill the rhyme
Now we can't stick in our old ways
Now it's out we'll see how you feel
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
And if you did we wouldn't try
I betcha thought we couldn't do it
But if we didn't we would die Видеоклипы
a very different song from what gentle giant usually brings, but I absolutely LOVED it.
When Gentle Giant starts playing 'middle of the road rock music', they are still on a totally different road. Theirs.
Fantastic
There's tons and tons of pop rock but there's not so much of the prog rock that GG are do so uniquely and excellently.
It's not that I thought the boys in the band couldn't do it, it's more that I never thought they needed to.
It's fun to hear the GG snobs spout off about this song, as if there is something wrong with a straight ahead, 4/4, cookin' rock number. Thanks for another great remix!
I remember reading an interview with the great Ray Shulman, and he said that this was done as their joke (nod and wink) to the punk scene that was going on in the U.K. at that time. No matter how good of a player/composer you are, you still start with the basic rock/blues basics and these guys, like many prog. bands, took music to a whole new level...fantastic stuff !!!
Yes, it would even fit in on radio at the time, alongside, say, Pete Townshend's late 70s powerpoppy solo stuff.
I’ve always liked this song (even though it’s much different than most of GG’s material). Love the video!
It’s possibly their heaviest
Gary Green's in my top 3 guitarists, he's just brilliant.
I remember when this was released years back still puts a big smile on my face ; it’s a fun song with a lot of energy, they were having a good time I’m so glad they did do it !! 🎉❤
Still my favorite Gentle Giant tune and a slap to the critics that claimed they were too “artsy farts” for British 🇬🇧 and American 🇺🇸 audiences. 😆🎸🥁🎹🎤
Still a banger! Thanks, lads, and huge thanks to Mr Wilson. It's because of his GG remixes that I finally left the house to see his Porcupine ensemble last year. Absolutely amazing show. Sat outside the theater for hours after the show digesting it with my mates, all longtime Giant fans.
Listen to the live version from 1978 BBC Sight and Sound , absolute banger !
The commentary track is funny when they do this, and "Mountain Time"...."what were we thinking" was one of the comments
Very accurate looking Gary Green! ;)
Gentle giant ..ha ha ha ..yeah ... this video is great , well done the visualiser, 10 out of 10 ..this group was good in it's time, very underrated to say the least ... thanks for upload
Every band/artist changes their sound throughout their careers. It's childish to think GG could keep playing that intricate mix of blues, hard rock and medieval music for 10 years straight. I like every phase of the group and even enjoy Missing Piece, Giant for a Day and Civilian. GG's "mediocre" stuff is still above most artists of that period and certainly light-years away from anything now.
lovely remix as usual! love you GG.
🙂✌️🖖
There's no accounting for taste. It makes no difference who likes this song - it only matters that they do.
What a great beginning of my mini holiday. And no i don`t get two weeks in Spain.
I love it!. This is just a fun song
Love the whole thing... thx y'all!
What a great way for a prog group to mock punk music!
Gentle Giant is my favorite band but never cared for this song agree with Derek when he said they should have never done it.
Rock'on 😊
👍👍👍😁👍👍👍😜👍👍👍
The Apex of prog rock bands!
I always knew you "could" do it. But when you did I really wished you hadn't.
Aternative title: I Kinda Wish We Hadn't Done It.
Nice re-mix of a "questionable" song from such a great band...even on my laptop, this sounds much better and "tolerable".
Sorry, die hard fan here, except when they started this. Obviously it got them nowhere to completely change their whole style.
I've always liked this song - even if being different - but am not so much of a fan of this remix.
And it was at this point I said goodbye to Gentle Giant. Embarrassing!
It was a failed attempt at punking themselves up at the time and it sounds no better now. Why bother?
GGarbage!
Not the best song on the album. IMO.
They threw the fishing line in the water with the wrong lure. Oh well. Generic sounding meh. It's solid music but not for me after their amazing previous output.
Well I wish they hadn’t done it . Without a doubt the most annoying GG song
I agree, sort of, but what about a majority of the "Giant for a Day" album??? There's some real "stinkers" on that one (But I do like a couple of songs from it, they did redeem themselves with the Civilian album) they are still one of the great Prog. bands of all time !!!
@@stanferraro4130 I totally agree with you . Civilian is better than GFAD but I think Interview and Missing Piece are the better of the later albums and better than most 80s music . That being said not in the same league as In a Glass House or Octopus
@@jefflevinson669 Right on, my fave is the Power and the Glory, but they are all unique and brilliant.
It's a parody
@@francescospiga7669 I did recognize that . Anyway you look at it not classic GG
I remember buying this album the first day it was in the record stores. I was horrified that my favorite band were playing prosaic commercial garbage like this song. I knew it was the end and then they really sunk to the bottom with Giant for a Day. I can’t blame them for wanting to make money and they are still one of my all-time favorites. Saw them three times and still treasure their first eight albums.
Listen to some New shit Called músic today and you Will find How great is GG even playing simple rock songs.
@@maloquerianordeste No thanks, life is too short and there is so much amazing music to hear.
Yeah , the quality of musicianship is still there, even though it is mainstream rock/pop .@@maloquerianordeste
Even when they changed their style, they were still good. Their first 8.5 albums are brilliant (tracks 2-5 on the "Missing Piece" are annoying, side 2 is great) ...Saw them 5 times back in the '70's in So.Cal.,USA...amazing..
