Gentle Giant wrote some of the heaviest riffs ever...
@@birdzzzondayflu2489 what’s your basis for saying they didn’t write some of the heaviest riffs? I mean this riff is nothing if not heavy and it was heavy as fck for 1971. Metal bands cite GG as an influence. Krokus paid tribute to that big “Peel the Paint” riff in one of their songs ffs. Please explain what you mean, because I’m dumbstruck.

@@Gloth_Sang Seems like the same solo to me, just more forward in the mix.
I've always thought Gentle Giant could be considered a Metal band if it wasn't for the complicated, intricate stuff like polyrhythms, syncopation and both key and time signature changes. These were not common in Metal, but the hard hitting drums and the heavy guitar riffs are comparable to Black Sabbath, which coincidentally they have toured with in the early 70s.
Heavy for the era, sort of. "Ever" is quite a stretch, though.
Whether one find's the lyrical and thematic content "heavy" is very subjective.
In terms of objective sonics, the trouble with calling 'GG' Heavy is they'd sound close to Crimson or Cream for 10 seconds and then they sound like The Modern Jazz Quartet or a renaissance fair the next 10 seconds... so sonically, at best they're _half-heavy, half-something else._
The only two prog bands that stand out as "out-heavy"ing the (metal and other) acts of their era - both thematically and sonically - were *King Crimson and Mr Bungle.*
And it's just, like.... _my opinion, man._ Other bands might sound heavier at some moment, but _in my opinion_ they weren't as heavy nor as creative in all the other aspects of music as Crimson and Bungle were.
I absolutely love it I simply cannot get enough of g-squared
In his Facebook post, Derek Shulman called his brother “my best friend.” He wrote, in part, “Ray really was a genius in so many ways. He was such a kind and caring soul. He was an incredible composer, musician, music producer and tech wizard.
An incredible song... It took me a few thoughtful auditions to appreciate the intricate opening riff (consisting of 25 notes!) and an incredible technique called "stretta", which Bach loved so much (sounds from the 1:50 mark) During the performance of the stretta, each imitating instrument enters before it has ended in the performance of the previous instrument, and they smoothly "layering", combine with each other. The instruments sounding here in the stretch (xylophone, mandolin, trumpet, acoustic guitar, clavichord, cowbell, cello, celesta) seem to prepare the listener for a breathtaking "crescendo", with one of Green's best guitar solos - after which the stretch sounds again in the finale - just the quintessence of GG!
The great and incomparable Gentle Giant.
One of the most inspired songs I've ever heard.
Gentle Giant: to know and to love!
The most underratted band ever !
The bass on Gary's solo is so powerful!
Down and dirty and sophisticated... AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!
Wholly scheist!
I own all Gentle Giant studio albums, as well as "Playing the fool". The sound remixed by Steven Wilson is awesome! Even hearing it on RUclips with a a pair of shabby cabinets makes the difference. Do I really have those songs at home? I think not, at least not in the same way they are presented here. Yesterday I went to one of my music suppliers and ordered "Three piece suite", "Octopus" and "The power and the glory". My fourth version of them, except "Three piece suite", the third. Can't help listening to Gentle Giant's music over and over. They were the best, at least for me and all my musician friends.
I totally agree.
When you have a genius like Frank Zappa tout hearing Gentle Giant as the best new music he had heard at that time.....that says it all.
Gentle Giant were and still are ahead of their time.
The utter schlock that passes for “music” these days is sickening.
That junk is what kids these days are exposed to.....gangster rap with inane rhythm and self aggrandizing disgusting “lyrics” and harmonically and melodically boring bilge.
Thank God in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s we grew with Great music from Motown, STAX, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Zappa, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, Chicago, B,S &T, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Pat Metheny Group, The Dregs, Happy the Man, Kansas, UK, Steely Dan and the Great Gentle Giant.
So happy for the Steve Wilson remixes.
I just got Steve Wilson’s stereo/5.1 remixes of Gentle Giant- The Power and the Glory and Freehand.
Next getting The Three Piece Suites and Octopus remixes.
It’s like hearing Gentle Giant all over again yet for the first time.....sonic heaven!!!
Next I’m
@@davidporshia5081 I get what you're saying and largely agree, especially since now more than ever it seems like GG's time will *never* come, 🤒 but always be careful to avoid sounding like your parents complaining about *your* music. At least there's PiNioL and Snarky Puppy.
@@davidporshia5081 Please don't use Gentle Giant to try and push your musical agenda
Totally get what you're saying, there. I love them, too!!! I have a very wide musical vocabulary, so Pink Floyd, Paul Hindemith, Frederic Chopin, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, James Taylor, Debussy, A.C. Jobim... on and on...
@@alphadogg64 You tell him (or her, or them)!!!! Whatever it is you are trying to say...
One of my favorite songs from my favorite GG album. Gary's solo.....wow!
Lyrics:
The room and street are known only to me and a few
I won't tell nobody
A place to meet where no-one can tell you what to do
I won't tell nobody
Here, awake in sleep together
My time is spent in chains and confusion in my head
I don't tell nobody
I keep my pains and swallow the harsh tears that I shed
I don't tell nobody
Here, in reverie together
I find escape in the street, in the house, in the room
I become somebody
I cast my die and leave all my troubles in the room
I become somebody
Here, awake in sleep together
I find this band utterly enthralling. There is no other word for what they accomplished.
I saw GG several times in Hamburg in the 1970ties. Always very good shows !
Considere-se um privilegiado!
These animations are some of my musical dreams coming true!
Damn, that guitar solo!
Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull & Steely Dan are the best bands ever. voila. basta. thank you for the music.
Kansas too with violin
Zappa + King Crimson come first (for me. :)
@Kayvon Bumpus Indeed!!!
*stares in King Crimson*
@@WillieEWoof Zappa is the grandmaster !
Such an underated group of musicians
Not by we who know.
I objectively rate them THE GREATEST BAND EVER.
Any objections???
🙂
Marvellous piece of music!
Love it! The sound on these re-masters is fabulous!
Gentle giant forever the kings of prog of the era
There was always that one instrument part in the quiet sections that I would try and try to make out. I had three of the cycling parts figured out easy, but I could never get that fourth one. Now I can finally hear it!
Minha música favorita da magnífica discografia do GG. Gary Green detona tudo nesse solo. Ray Shulman com um baixo monstruoso. Perfeita!
This video and song are masterpieces
I shall be the first one to compliment the video! (song too). Bravo video geniuses who made this, whoever you are!
The best band ever!👴
I agree!
Objectively, YES - and SUBJECTIVELY, as well in my case.
Gentle Great Giant !!!
Loved the alternate solo ! Awesome ! New stuff coming out ! Great news !!! Cheers !
It fooled me - I wasn't aware of it beforehand - until about the 3:27 mark, that is several bars into the solo! Until then I was dead certain I was listening to the original solo I was familiar with since the early 70s! Amazing how he plays the beginning in the exact same fashion (feel, etc.) as in the other take... Unless there's been an edit cut of course...
I find it even better than the original one!
@@norbertlanguedoil6664 It's actually the version they used on the album but for the album version they shortened the piece. 15 seconds of the guitar solo are missing in the album version.
Que som fantástico, contemporâneo, sombrio, um clássico!!!!!!!
fab video!
Thank you...so very much!
Fiquei muito feliz em ver um clip para a música, e principalmente por se tratar de um lançamento oficial do Giant.
Que bom
Always Loved this song !!! 👍🎶
This is brilliant!
There's a reason why they're called giant.... For many years I've been listening .... 3 friends with miniar what a giant group
What about Gary?
This stuff sounds amazing through a good pair if headphones.
This video is awesome! 😃
Wonderful
omg thanks for posting (Official Video)!
these guys were waaaaaay ahead of their time!

Travail digne d'un professionnel .Excellent 9.999 sur 10 .A+++
This Guitar solo!! wtf
Tubular man. Just peachy. I wish I would've been there with gg in that house and room.
Ótima remasterização, bom som, música linda
WOWIE! Thanks!
Awesome.
I really like this video!

Such a supreme band, I'm giddy i can listen to them whenever i want, cause i love them! to have that freedom is great luck.

Great remix, Mr. Wilson, by the way. thanks!
amazing
Grande Gary Green alla chitarra 🎸🎸🎸
And PHIL, the 3rd Bro, he was quite important in the beginning.
Terreno Baldio é o Gentle Giant brasileiro!
Cada día suenan mejor!
Que temazo hermano!
Muito bom. Tenho!!
Haken must be fans of Gentle Giant
Ive been listening to this band regularly for 45 years and Im still not sure if I like it.
I want to hear this arranged for Brass and PercussionI would love to see Concord Blue Devils take this on
great video! don't listen to the haters
The Remixes are made by Steven Wilson ! So its awesome !
apart from the first album they didnt need remixes lmo a pointless excersise
He has remixed the first album in its entirety. Check out Unburied Treasure
I thought the multitracks of the first album were lost, hence couldn't be remixed.
He`s a genius!!
Wow. Where the hell did this video come from? I love it. Awesome voice.❤❤❤
Obra prima
I always thought of that song being about a group of musicians rehearsing and composing together in that room. I guess there are other ways of seeing it.
It's about a house where they sell drugs
Gary is on fire here!!
Wait... this has a different guitar solo than the version I'm used to. Was this an alternate take recorded back in '71?
2:39 Let's go.
ofc this is the video i see while taking another edible right after the first one kicks in...
O vocal continua bom mesmo após tantos anos. Bom ouvir material novo do gigante Gentil.
A música é antiga. O vídeo que é novo.
Gravação original 1971.
Material novo?? Oi??
❤❤❤
very interesting band, you have to invest in their music to get to the heavy riffs, i like how they build up to it!
2:38 - RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!! 💥🤩
If anything, this version is just a touch more manic than the solo on the original 1971 release.
Steven Wilson's new mix sounds amazing but I don't understand why he had to change so drastically an already perfect guitar solo.
Other comments suggest that Gary Green had recorded another solo, and it was still available, so SW used that one. It's a known practice, TBH.
The solo was augmented
I wonder if Godley and Creme were fans. I suspect they were... Also, that teddy bear really brings on the fear.
Great sound, but I think the 'video' stuff was a mistake. This is not what I would think about with this music in the very least. The 35th DRT anniversary editions of the Chrysalis albums with their included in-concert performance videos were absolutely superb.
Agreed. The audio is really nice here, though.
Sorry i disagree and think this vid is brilliant and fitting. The song is about a drug dealer. Dont you think it deserves the craziest, trippiest vid known to man. I a non user was totally blitzed and gone through the duration of this. That's pretty damn hard to do simiulate an acid experience and do it well.. Kudos to mr. Melus.
Different mix of the original LP track
Some Gary Green action
Sounds a little bit like KingCrimson on Cat Food
Is that....Pookie?
Hell yeah
Is there any story behind the lyrics?
Hate the new mix. Bass and kick are over-hyped. It's already a bass heavy song. Over-all dynamics are lost. The person making the video didn't get what the song is about. A musician escaping the brutal relentless workaday world to the one place where being truly alive is still possible - the home studio space, the practice room, the woodshed, maybe with a few mates. spending a few hours "in reverie together". Derek covers this again to some degree in the underrated "All through the Night". Anyway this a great song, even for GG who had many great songs. I love when the weird annoying busy bits just build and build until the guitar finally slaps it all away with that glorious solo. To me that's the perfect musical analogy. "I find escape in the street, in the house, in the room
I become somebody"....
ruclips.net/video/MYU5GXb7xjU/видео.html
I don't like it either! It's definitely lost something.
And what's happened to the guitar solo? It was perfectly good the way it was originally
(They've messed up the echoplex section of the Peel the Paint guitar solo as well).
I am not a remix person. I noticed drums too loud in spots. Not certain that's wilson but he has a bass heavy rep. The 1stt 8 gg albums are as perfect a run as an artist ever had.
Edward, i love your comment so much. What a pleasure it was reading it. Greetings from one devoted Gentle Giant fan in Ukraine!! Long live GG!! Good health to you .....and all those who really care ;-)
@Edward Givens Very nice comment! What's your source for the lyrical topic? Some say it's about a musician, others say it's about a drug dealer. Are these your hypothesises or have you guys read it officially?
@@jakobsprogworld Hypothesis :) Reads like musicians words to me. The Schulman"s dad was a musician too I gather.
...my situation..
Je suis comme ce petit personnage ; bon à enfermer car rongé par mes névroses ........... :-(
the early albums were remixed in 2012 so why do it again imo the 2o12 remixs are better i own all the gentle giant on cd i got rid of my vinyl collection and cassettes i find it odd a lot of prog fans dismiss them and find them dated but thats there choice
Why can't they just let Wilson remaster all their albums?
Some of the masters are missing
@@dM-ij1we 2008 fire?
@@stpaulimdog I think they’re lost.
Is it true that the song is about finding the drugs in the certain place? :-(
Who says that? Have you got a source? Don't feel attacked, I'm just interested because I'm reviewing the Gentle Giant discography :).
@@jakobsprogworld No problem, I'm always glad to get a response to my words! I have found it accidentally when reading the booklet for Three Piece Suite not long ago. Click on the scans over there and find the page 12... rockronologia.blogspot.com/2019/03/2017-three-piece-suite-gentle-giant.html
There Phil says that "the song describes the place you went to score your drugs". English is not my native language indeed, so perhaps I misunderstood something - and I'm not a knower of anything drugs-related. But it looks like I've understood it right...
@@jakobsprogworld By the way, among other things I have made a ROUGH alpha version design of Gentle Giant-themed playing cards. Never published them on paper or plastic but they do exist in electronic form. I also started writing the book about the band in Russian like 4 years ago but then left the idea.

@@DeadnWoon Ah! Thank you!! Yes, you've unterstood it right. I watched the vid with your cards, very nice! Why didn't you go on with writing a book about GG in Russian? It's a great idea!
@@jakobsprogworld Well, in very general, to be frank, I am sort of lost in this world :-). My life is very prog-rock-wise, that is grotesque, unexpected, twisted and odd.
In details, I didn't have enough inspiration and enough desire to complete the book. I'll try to give it a try.
I have also made several programs for use on Sega Mega Drive (aka Sega Genesis) video game console. It has a cult status in the post-Soviet space. I have made sort of an encyclopedia of GG, et al.

I am very much a GG fan. But this video I found both distracting and disturbing. Not what I would have imagined with this song. But hey that's probably just me.
I personally love everything but the video. Although creative, it really doesn't fit the song.
I kind of like the trippy part with the guitar solo
Almost as good as Gong!
