I went to an IBLP “retreat” and had to have a one-on-one meeting with Bill Gothard as a 17 year old. I was terrified. He had convinced us he could tell by our “countenance” if we had sin issues. I remember being pressured to confess my sins to him, which looking back was just SO inappropriate to make a young girl do alone with a man!! Ugh. Thankfully he didn’t get inappropriate with me like he did other girls-on that same trip, I had to ride in his antique car squished next to him in the front seat…he took us girls who went to the retreat out for Boston Market. What a strange experience… also learned years later, that the guy who delivered us food at the retreat to our cabins actually was busted for hiding cameras in the bathrooms… He wasn’t arrested as far as I knew and was simply “dealt with” internally by leadership. 😑 Thank God my ATI / IBLP days are behind me…and I still am a Christian even after all that-they twisted Christianity, so glad I had other people in my life show me true Christianity, or else I might have run from it.

I literally grew up in this cult. Thankfully, my mother saw the light and taught me how to be a strong, independent woman. I appreciate the things I learned, like how to run a household and take care of my husband, but I'm a person. I'm not a slave to my husband, nor am I a baby making machine.
But does your husband know how to take care of you when you are sick? When you are tired? BC if he doesn't do his own laundry, clean his own crap up then you are nothing more than a servant.
newsflash: women spit out babies. So they are baby making machines. However, only to that they allow themselves to be that. That's where you have a decision. Men aren't bad. Husbands aren't bad. But its the teachings that are skewed. They are FEAR BASED.
@@LSSYLondon saying you know how to take care of your husband isn’t a bad thing per se, both partners should have training to know how to take care of their partner. I got saved and then married into a Gothard church. Being told I could never say no by my pastors wife (I was molested at age nine) set up a horrible cycle of dysfunction in our marriage. Let's just say I took a lot of pleasure seeing Josh Duggar found guilty.
That’s un-Christlike to celebrate the suffering of others. Jesus Christ never celebrated at the downfall of others. Seems like you still have some work to do!
@@fulm1029 as Josh did not repent or ask for forgiveness then he isn't the one suffering. It's the siblings and others he molested that are hurting. It’s so important these abuses are being exposed. I admire the bravery it takes to come forward with what you and so many others have gone through. I saw a dismissive comment that missed the point. We all have “work to do” and these abuses create such trauma to work through. I hope this series helps lift some of those burdens.
This makes me feel so seen as someone who spent my early years in the IBLP. There is so much trauma in my family from this. They need to be stopped so no one else can be hurt.
I caught those clips of Michael Pearl and Focus on the Family. I hope they're mentioned too, so many parallels. Even folks not directly raised under Bill Gothard suffered from other people copying his ideas and strategies.
Absolutely no parallels between the IBLP AND Focus on the Family. I was in the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church, basically IBLP, and Focus on the Family is true Christianity, IBLP is now!
Grew up in an IFB cult, I do not like the pearls, but I have no problem with focus on the family. I spent many happy hours listening to Adventures in Odyssey.
Focus on the Family are certainly family centered, but definitely do not belong in the same category as Gothard or the Pearls; those abuse enablers are despicable.

As someone who grew up in a non-religious household and looked up to the Duggar family…. THIS is so important. They fooled us all, but they were just pawns in a much larger game
Yes! They are pawns in a larger game! And it’s not just IBLP. 7 mountains dominionism is the bigger idea that anyone could be swayed by. Why not have government influenced by prayer and people seeking the lord’s heart on a matter? We still have that Prayer Breakfast that is a big networking deal in DC.
It’s exciting and scary all at once to see my childhood trauma laid bare. As a student in IBLP I did always hope this day would come. So here’s to the truth coming out!
The fact that i used to watch this family on tlc when I was in Middle school thinking how happy they all seemed and now they have a documentary about the truth is so symbolic for the reality of the world we live in. so sad
Watching a few episodes of "19 Kids & Counting" years ago I knew that the older kids were going to retaliate someday against the way they were raised. I saw it in their faces.
I need to see this. I already knew the Duggars weren't the perfect wholesome family I saw them as in their reality show on Netflix when I was 10. I didn't even notice that none of the girls were allowed to wear pants back then, I just thought they were an amazing large family. I feel like I need to know the full truth of everything, just bury that view I had of them when I was younger. That was a very naive and idealistic view.
Never watched the show 19 Kids because I knew evil was lurking under the surface. Anyone that uses his child for fame is disgusting, and anytime someone pedals religion on TV, it ends in scandal, deception, and atrocity. I am thankful the hideousness and hypocrisy is being exposed. I just devoured episode one and can’t wait for more.
Glad to see folks sticking up for homeschooling. Let’s not misdiagnosis the problem. I was homeschooled, and went on to graduate top of my department in undergrad and then graduated from a top law school-all of which I credit to the terrific education my parents provided (which, in comparison, far exceeds what you’ll find in the California public education system). And I have a fantastic relationship with my parents and family. The media is always so quick to point out the extreme cases where homeschooling went awry (which sounds like the Duggars), but they forget that public schools are plagued by bullying, harassment, teen pregnancies, STDs, drugs, and even school shootings. The fact is, any educational environment can be abused.
The quality of homeschool education really comes down to the intelligence of the parent doing the homeschooling (and the quality of educational materials being used). Your parents were probably pretty smart and made sure you learned important things like math and science. I have a friend who homeschooled her kids and all 3 are in college. But if some dumb hillbilly pulls their kids out of school because of critical race theory or whatever their kids aren’t going to be any smarter then the parents teaching them. Between the Duggars and their former pals the Bates there’s 38 kids most of them adults now. Not one lawyer. Doctor, accountant, or engineer among them. I think one of the Bates daughters is a nurse (she lives in Chicago and didn’t really participate in their show). But out of 38 kids she’s about the only college educated professional
I can't wait,So happy that she got her strength to become what she is meant to be and got out of that cult. I think her husband helped her in many ways.
Oh there is no doubt that her seeking out therapy and having a supportive spouse has helped her. Best two decisions she probably ever made were to get out of her family and go see a professional, licensed therapist.
I haven't been this excited for a doc in a long time! I've always found the Duggars and all that they represent to be deeply disturbing, and I hate that TLC has given them a platform for so long.
I used to go to an evangelical church. Granted we were not IBLP, not even remotely close to it. I also wouldn't call us a cult or an ultraconservative church etc. But my ex-pastor did openly promote a traditionalist family worldview, was super dismissive of people's mental health, subtly denigrated women, explicitly denigrated people who worked blue collar jobs, and was super unsupportive of single people looking back, it was a really soul-crushing experience
I knew nothing about the Institution in Basic Life Principles. The Duggar family I was familiar with but this "religious" organization? Hell no. All those poor little girls....It's all so disgusting, depraved and pathetic. And frightening. I'm going to watch this when it drops in a day or so. I have to give major respect to those with the tenacity and courage expose these creeps. Well done.
The part that was so disturbing about the Duggars was when Joshes wife Anna decided to stay with him even though there was clear evidence he is a pervert and a pedifile. The fact she would even consider allowing him around her innocent children and continued to have more children with him was sickening to me. Her job was to protect her children she did not, some day she will have to face the fact she may have willingly put her children in great danger at the hands of their own father, she will have to answer for that not only to her children but to her god as well.
Bill Gothard is a real creep and I’m glad everything evil in his organization is coming to light, so praise God for that. BUT At one point they did lump fundies in with all Christian’s by showing all the Christian influencers on social media, suggesting they are all IBLP influenced, which is so false! Kinda glad Jinger declined to take part in this sensationalized doc.
I remember arguing with my mom about that show when I was a teenager, 18 kids and counting I think it was. My mom watched it religiously. Once she was talking about how all families should be close like this. I was repulsed. I told her that NO family should be like this. And she told me “there’s nothing wrong with stay at home moms” and asked me what I thought was so wrong about it. I couldn’t explain it but everything about it felt wrong. Something wasn’t right…A couple years later I saw that I was right.
Though I did hate that they raised their girls to think that they could never be anything else, the SAHM aspect of the show wasn’t the problem. It was this hidden sinister-ness, you could just feel sometimes. Like in one episode the family was in a big city and the boys were told to look down whenever they were walking past a women that the parents considered inappropriately dressed, and they couldn’t look up until they were told that they could. That was one episode in particular that raised serious red flags to me.
@@meganstanley5589 Yeah, that was alarming. I remember it. It's putting the idea in the boy's heads that they have no self-control and that women are dangerous.
@@meganstanley5589 Yeah, I completely understand what you're saying. There is so much that is good within families like the Duggars but... There's always that "But" and you couldn't put your finger on it but you knew lurking behind the smiles was something sinister. Of course, there's nothing wrong with stay at home parents or home education or big close families but. And that's where it becomes so much bigger than the Duggars. That's where we enter a cult where satan has taken a hold not God's ways 😞
@Megan. And there still isn't anything wrong with being a stay at home mom. In fact, if there's a mom, that means there's a child or children. Of course, depending on the age and other circumstances, a mom may be more free to work an outside job also. But the raising of children is the most important job. And it requires sacrifice. If a couple cannot handle or are too selfish to make the necessary sacrifices, then they shouldn't have children.
I grew up in this Colt. We followed the teachings of Bill Gothard and Doug Phillips. Also some teachings from the pearls. We were isolated out in the country and we were all home-schooled. My education was seriously neglected. I remember not having any friends whenever I was growing up. And we would barely ever met with the other families. And whenever we did they all put on this front and this prideful attitude. My mom suffered from depression she was always mad and angry she stayed in her room most of the day will my dad was at work. All of our friends started judging us when we started dressing differently and wearing pants. I remember sexual abuse going on in my family and nothing being done about it. My sisters and I still feel fear and anxiety till this day. It gave me a terrible view of God in the Bible I had fear the Bible for a long time. Probably because my parents used to spank me if we were having a Bible study and I didn't get anything out of the Bible study. Or if we went to church and we were listening to the pastor and I didn't listen to what he said I was spanked when we got home. I guess I'm beginning to realize how toxic everything really was I just brushed it aside for a long time. So far all of my siblings have gone through depression and anxiety. They have very low self-esteem and they see themselves as inferior to other people. I remember friends of ours their daughter ran away from home with this other young girl because they couldn't take the abuse. My siblings and I all moved out at a very young age to get away from how controlling my mother was. I just wish now I was born in a different family but there's nothing I can do about that now. The whole experience tainted my view God.
Please tell yourself and your siblings you are NOT inferior just because of the parents you had and the environment you grew up in. That was all your parent's responsibility and it's not on you.
I always thought Jinger would be the one to 'get out' and spill the beans. Was sad she got married young, but I think that was her way to separate. Glad she wasn't alone, and her sister stood with her.

This is the weirdest story I have heard in a while. Boston Market with Bill Gothard sounds like a fever dream. Glad you’re ok
So happy for you that you were able to find a true relationship with God after all that trauma! I didn't experience ANYTHING close to fundamentalism/IBLP etc but I have my own church trauma that really changed my life and I know it's difficult to carve out a new spiritual journey with God afterwards. Sending love!
Alexa i'm very sorry for whatever trauma you went through.
What in the actual
To think of how much we idolized Bill Gothard as a wonderful man of God who couldn’t do or teach wrong… so glad for where God has lead us now!!
I literally grew up in this cult. Thankfully, my mother saw the light and taught me how to be a strong, independent woman. I appreciate the things I learned, like how to run a household and take care of my husband, but I'm a person. I'm not a slave to my husband, nor am I a baby making machine.
Your mother made right thing
But does your husband know how to take care of you when you are sick? When you are tired? BC if he doesn't do his own laundry, clean his own crap up then you are nothing more than a servant.
newsflash: women spit out babies. So they are baby making machines. However, only to that they allow themselves to be that. That's where you have a decision. Men aren't bad. Husbands aren't bad. But its the teachings that are skewed. They are FEAR BASED.
@@LSSYLondon saying you know how to take care of your husband isn’t a bad thing per se, both partners should have training to know how to take care of their partner. Marriage is taking care of each other, both husband and wife. It’s not necessarily a sexist expectation for the woman, so I’d just gently advise you to not be antagonistic.
@Kirsty de Paor okay, so we have confirmation that the wife takes care of the husband, do we have confirmation that the husband is taking care of the wife? The person you are responding to is asking a good question
Go Jill! I also hope Jinger contributes, she says in her book that IBLP life gave her really bad anxiety.
She and Jeremy are still at least Fundy-Lite, so the little moves away from the BS that she's already made are as far as I expect Jinger to go. I don't think we'll ever get the full truth about that family out of her.
I'm thinking she's kinda done after the book for now
Well, when you get molested and move away from the Family Unit, then you can wake up to the flaws of Christianity. And, you become more open, honest, and also education helps.
True Christianity is not flawed. It’s all of these dangerous false beliefs that are flawed. True Christianity is freeing. However, there is so much bad theology out there.
She turned it down because it did not pay. With that being said ,she won't. She traded one cult for another.
I hope this is the nail in the coffin for the IBLP
Me, too!
And Jim Bozo and Michelle
Me too - burn it to the ground. Gothard has traumatized thousands.
It won’t be. Jesus Christ will push it onward and towards better things!
There not Christan
YES! Go Jill. She wasn't even being paid for being the star on Jill and Jessa - Counting On. You know why? Because she is a woman. THIS is her time to shine now! REVEREND JEN from FUNDIE FRIDAYS will be featured on this documentary. She brings awareness about religious coercive control.
He should have paid her! Maybe she would be less likely to release this doco now with a better family income. (But still super happy she is!)
She was paid. Her dad hid the money.
@@amybess oh you're right I forgot. But I think it was only minimum wage 🙏
They were paid and her father didn’t take the money. That’s a lie. He can’t legally take money from their show he was not even on!

Omg Fundie Fridays!!!!! I am soooo glad you got Jen she does such incredible job researching and explaining. She's a national treasure!!! I can not wait to watch this!!
I am so proud of Jen that I could cry right now, so happy for her!
Never heard of her so I doubt she's a national treasure. To each in their own world.
Yes, finally. Thank you Jill for being so brave to tell us your side of the story.
Way to go Jill you have soo many people out here cheering you on. Soo proud of you and how your making sure your boys don't have to carry around the generational trauma you had to shoulder growing up.
I SWEAR TO GOD IF JILL EXPOSES HER OWN FAMILY WHO RAISED HER THEN DAMMIT I WILL SUPPORT HER.
It says a lot about her.
I got saved and then married into a Gothard church. Being told I could never say no by my pastors wife (I was molested at age nine) set up a horrible cycle of dysfunction in our marriage. Let's just say I took a lot of pleasure seeing Josh Duggar found guilty.
I'm so sorry
That’s un-Christlike to celebrate the suffering of others. Jesus Christ never celebrated at the downfall of others. Seems like you still have some work to do!
@@fulm1029 as Josh did not repent or ask for forgiveness then he isn't the one suffering. It's the siblings and others he molested that are hurting. Even God says you have to admit your sins to be forgiven. It isn't a sin to speak your truth and pray that someone be caught and punished for doing sinful things.
It’s so important these abuses are being exposed. I admire the bravery it takes to come forward with what you and so many others have gone through.
I saw a dismissive comment that missed the point. We all have “work to do” and these abuses create such trauma to work through. I hope this series helps lift some of those burdens.
@@fulm1029 ad hominem logical fallacy
This makes me feel so seen as someone who spent my early years in the IBLP. There is so much trauma in my family from this. They need to be stopped so no one else can be hurt.
I hope they address all the abuse- child, domestic, parentification, reproductive! Call it out!
I'm most excited to hear Jill talk more about her feelings!
ATI/IBLP alumni are finally being given a voice.
Let's burn it all down.
The Pearls are demons
@@524FrmGrl nah/ focus on the family is also very extreme.
As someone who was part of ATI as a child I’m so ready for this series 👍
Same! I have some horrible (and super awkward) memories from being in Knoxville at the ATI conference.
Wild that Jim and Bobye Holt are in this documentary together, and now she has a protective order against him for 10 years!
yeah this is totally wild. they may not be iblp but jim holt apparently still feels entitled to act like an IBLP man!
That happened a couple weeks ago so I think they didn't have time to cut him out
Not true, Katie Joy from Without a Crystal Ball warned producers about this during the making of this series. She has been talking about this for a while look it up.
@@lelalynsmith she’s been talking about Jim holt being potentially abusive, yes. However, I’m referring to the fact that the protective order leaked in the last couple of weeks
@@lelalynsmith No, this documentary was filmed over a year and a half ago. The protective order was filed last month. Katie Joy is a known liar. Stop paying any attention to her.
This story needed to be told. I use to watch 19 kids and always thought it was odd. I pray for the families and the victims. Jill, I’m so proud of her standing for her truth. Her own father didn’t even protect her.
You "pray" for them?! That's exactly the root of the problem here and elsewhere. Religion and "god" are man-made creations. They are meant to scare people into submission and to keep them from questioning anything---much like the freaks on this show. It's 2023... Wake up, people. The lies are right in front of you.
Same here. I always “knew” Josh had a problem and Jim Bob always gave me the creeps. The IBLP and other organizations like it give God and Christianity a bad name.
Praying. Make yourself feel good about doing nothing. 😂😂😂
Just the idea that in the 2000s anyone is having that many kids should have triggered something negative...in what world is it normal?
@@IAmHereForeve have you seen their argument that the world is not overpopulated because if you shoved everyone together, we wouldn't even cover the state of Mississippi or something like that? Many people face years of abuse from their families, I’m so proud of Jill for speaking out. ❤
You go Jill they can no longer hurt you and you control your own life, you are doing nothing wrong by telling your story and your truth!
True! And she is actually helping others trapped in this mess!
Jill and Jinger speaking out against their family and how their upbringing harmed them is my fucking jam right now.
I'm happy that Jill is in it and Derek (her husband) supports her.
Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes.
Thank you for saving other girls and women to Jill, Jinger, and whomever else stood up in this series.
Just finished the series. I’ve never wanted to hug someone so badly, neither have I wanted to murder someone so badly.
There’s a saying in Chinese: Those who survive a catastrophe are bound to have good fortune later on. I hope this saying will come true to all the beautiful, brave, strong victims.
Lastly, the producers of the Duggar show at TLC/discovery are no less guilty or disgusting than the cult itself.
You could only do a “side hug”!😮
TLC knew this guy molested his sisters and went ahead give him his own show. Pure evil
Someone needs a spanking
So ready for this! And ready to see Reverend Jen speak in this. Also I want to give Jill a giant hug, throw them under the bus girl!!! I hope that the abuse victims find a bit of peace after speaking their truth.

This has been a long time coming! The defunct IBLP/ATI cult no longer has enough money or sway to wage a battle against every survivor speaking out. So proud of everyone that took part in exposing this cult for what it is. The harm it has done to so many families is horrendous! -Dee
So excited to see Jen in this. Go Fundie Fridays!!!
Excellent doc with one major flaw: Why were the TLC producers and execs not also interviewed and held accountable?? They were complicit!! The exploitation of the kids and the enabling of their wackdoodle parents was criminal.
A must see! Just finished watching the first episode and wow.. Jill is really brave and cousin Amy is awesome!
I get a kick out of Amy's husband too. When Amy was talking about Michelle's soft, meek, and mild voice he said "Drives me nuts!" 🤣 That might have been in episode two because I watched the first two episodes today.
Shout out to Fundie Friday and Jen. I'll be subscribing to Prime to watch.
i love love love that Fundie Fridays is in this. she has such great depths of insight and is such a great human being! might make it worth spending my bezos bucks on this.
my father and mother were both raised in this cult so it was interesting to watch and for them to say "i was in that room" or "i saw that happen" - im so glad the survivors of all this awful trauma and abuse came forward for this series
Wow, looks like a really great documentary - Production did a great job at finding great sources for this! Love Jen from Fundie Fridays in this! 🎉
It’s exciting and scary all at once to see my childhood trauma laid bare.
As a student in IBLP I did always hope this day would come. So here’s to the truth coming out!
I'm going to watch the crap out of this show.
I’m even more excited to watch this now that I find out my favorite RUclipsr is featured! Proud Jenninite!
Wooo, Jen from Fundie Fridays!! So happy they consulted you for this and so proud of you!
Do you think there will be a season 2?
As an Arkansan I am so happy that people are seeing the truth. They are one of the many shames of our state!
And what’s scary is they run for political things in your state! Truly terrifying having people like that in power
🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏👏

But my ex-pastor did openly promote a traditionalist family worldview, was super dismissive of people's mental health, subtly denigrated women, explicitly denigrated people who worked blue collar jobs, and was super unsupportive of single people
looking back, it was a really soul-crushing experience
I knew nothing about the Institution in Basic Life Principles. The Duggar family I was familiar with but this "religious" organization? Hell no. All those poor little girls....It's all so disgusting, depraved and pathetic. And frightening. I'm going to watch this when it drops in a day or so. I have to give major respect to those with the tenacity and courage expose these creeps. Well done.

I can not wait to see this!!! I watched the Duggars growing up and now I’m a fellow Jennonite..this is so exciting!!
"Some people got no choice; they ain't never found a voice that they could talk with, or even call their own. "

They got Jen from Fundie Fridays for this documentary!
Being a SAHM isn't wrong. Everything ELSE with the Duggars was wrong.
Yay Rev Jen is representing hard! So excited to see her interviews.

I feel so bad for you and your siblings I hope some day you all find peace.
Please tell yourself and your siblings you are NOT inferior just because of the parents you had and the environment you grew up in. That was all your parent's responsibility and it's not on you.
