You are still a great ambassador for the Mini brand - I imagine that is why you would have had one of the first allocation. At the end of the day its your money and the content you produce is still top notch so chalk it up to experience.

I’m a bit old school and like to buy my cars too, mainly because I’m good at buying them but not so good at selling them, so tend to hang on to them for a long time - plus if you have a few the mileage is low on all of them. Really good deals are available on new cars so that has negated the initial depreciation to some degree so you’re not taking such a huge hit, and you only take that hit if you sell them. If I were to be a high mileage user, then I suspect my thinking would be entirely different. Everybody is different and you have to do what is right for you, I really enjoy your channel and how grounded you are, it makes your channel relatable and thus hugely enjoyable.

Completely understand and respect your decision. I had the same back and forth thoughts before I purchased my new GTI TCR. I'd never owned a new car before but knew I wanted that particular car. The appeal of spec'ing it to how I wanted, being the first owner and again, knowing it was "sort of" a limited run, I still went ahead. And I try not to think too much about the depreciation 😳 At the end of the day, you only live once but everyone has their reasons to why they should or shouldn't commit. Looking forward to the next video of your new car 👍🏻😁

I did also have my deposit down about a year ago. Got excited, and very much like you, I started to doubt myself in getting it, for slightly different reason than yours, it was more about the every day ride I would get. I Could not believe that I was told by Sytner in Oldbury just before Christmas that I could have one. But end of January I cancelled mine, went for a new Audi TT, which I do not regret in the slightest, I am more happier that I have bought the TT. Given that mythical 10 car garage and an open budget things would be different and we'd never have to compromise. From the looks of the video ending I have a sneaky feeling you aren't going to regret this decision one bit fella. Best of luck with the new beasty when it arrives!

Not a good day for Mini - we’re just back from our Mini dealership where we cancelled our electric Mini (SE) which we’d had on pre-order since July 5th last year (at Goodwood FOS - before the official launch). You’ve done the right thing Peter. If you have a gut feeling about something, you should go with it. I bought a new car 2 years ago and traded it in after 6 months. My wife hated the car, but she couldn’t bring herself to tell me before I bought it, to avoid spoiling my fun. Better to be totally honest about it before you lose a lot of money.Ouch! Still hurts!! I replaced it with a pre-reg. golf gti performance, saving £5500 on a brand new one. We both love it, so something good came out of it.

  • @Michaellipmanactor

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from re depreciation. I’ve always said that if I put £1000’s in the bank and after 1,2,3 years the bank manager said ‘I’m afraid that the £50,000 you deposited is...um..well er, only worth £32,000’ you’d go ballistic. That’s why new cars are such a poor investment especially as reliability on used cars is so much better these days. I bought a ‘66 plate’ JCW Convertible that was about 6 months old that had all the ‘packs’ on and I saved over £10000 on list. If I’d been the previous owner I’d have wept.

Good morning my friend. Back on it again. I’m blown away at this very first vid of the catch ups. At the end of the day, you have to do what makes sense to you, no one else. Depreciation does kick a touch for sure. This is why I like you as a You Tube guy, but more importantly, as a personal friend, you are down to earth and you take life sensibly. It’s easy to lose £30,000, it takes a hell of a long time to get it back, simple as that. You’ve done the sensible life choice. I’m only a few days behind ya lol.

I understand your decision and I'm grappling with the same issue. The more I think about what I'll be giving up, it's not a sound decision to get my GP. I will miss my heated seats, sound deadening, AWD, 6 speed standard shift and all the comfort options I now have. If they made a 2 door mini JCW AWD with 306hp. I'd take that in a heartbeat over the GP.

Enjoyed this video, that's real life and appreciate you sharing your thoughts. The GPs and GP2s that you see for big money, are on the whole standard and very low mileage, so as you said you don't want to be worrying about putting the miles on. I hope it's a JCW Clubman, I drove one last year on a Pistonheads road trip, totally impressed and would be interesting viewing to see you making a few mods.

I believe that You have done the right thing...
Spending that much money You have to think about practicality or just have the money left over...
Bought a Abarth Rivale but I have a Multivan T6 for practicality and a Abarth doesn’t cost that much...
Been looking at several Mini’s since You and Stefan started to show them...
Now I definitely wanna have ONE since my wife’s car is practical as well I’m thinking about giving up the T6 and get either a MINI JCW COUNTRYMAN ALL4 or a
MINI JCW CLUBMAN ALL4 they both be around 60.000.-€ so a lot of money... need to look at both closer and driving them. What kills me is the fact that I can’t have the COUNTRYMAN whit the 6 doors.
By length I need to fit my ski’s 🎿⛷ inside (I hate boxes on the roof) will get a box for transportation and need to find out how to transport 3 bicycles 🚲 well think I’ve made my point...need practicality and fun at the same time...while still keeping my ABARTH 😎
Thanks for all Your great reviews and honesty.

On delivery no sunroof, accept or wait another 4 months. Did a good compromise with my dealer who had an aftermarket roof fitted at their expense.👍👍sold car after 4 yrs depreciation bearable. Ok, you certainly made the right decision ... I've owned 7 late model Minis .... one of which was a JCW Cab and two original GPs. GP1s, if you will, are brilliant .. raw, supercharged, light , small .... wonderful cars and I enjoyed every minute with mine . When the GP2s came out I thought they were too big, overweight and covered in "Ricky Racer" graphics that I thought were tacky to say the least. I had thought about buying one but the moment I saw it on the showroom floor I passed.
When I saw the GP3 Concept car online I was blown away ... I thought that if Mini brought that design into production I would be a serious customer. They didn't and I'm not!
Many journalists who have driven the car have stated, repeatedly, that it misses the mark. One went so far as saying "it could have been a contender but it's not". At the price Mini is asking I think the car will be a financial failure for them.
The 2013 GPs were priced at $39,500 I believe ... 4 months after they arrived at Mini dealers I had three dealers, that I had done previous business with, call me and offer new GPs, that were still on their showroom floors, for low $30s ... they simply couldn't sell them,.
I 'm sure that will be the case with the GP3s. You made the right choice. The R53 GPs are still holding their values as far as I can see ... I just sold my GP with 44,000 miles on it for $20K , not bad for a 14 year old Mini.

If practicality is a worry you have absolutely done the right thing. I had a GP2 and sold after 2 years of ownership as no good for anything other than single life. And in terms of market value, they don't hold their value as much as youd think. Mine had very very low mileage (under 1000) and got almost no extra for it. Enjoy your new car whatever it is, life's too short!

While I am new to Mini ownership, my local dealer currently has all JCW available for test driving (somehow). I did not like the Mini 2-door and after watching another video of you testing the GP3 am sure you're not disappointed. The Mini was a very harsh ride, I'd liken it to washboard roads all the time. I love off-roading, but want a truck to buck me, not a car. You describe the ride of Charlie Clubman perfectly...firm. Our Countryman S is firm but in a very pleasant. I find a lot of cars too bouncy. I knew I didn't want another Countryman, so I drove everything else in the JCW lineup and also went with the Clubman. Zippy, firm ride, corners well, and the sounds is amazing. This was with run flats. I have a plug kit I keep with my other cars, so will jump switch to non-run flat once the car is delivered to really enjoy her.
I really appreciate your content as a new Mini owner and love seeing all the mods and updates available that will not void my warranty.

I think you've done the right thing. The new GP is nowhear near the focused machine that previous generations were. They've become fatter, heavier and less focused as time has gone on. The fact the new one has no under body aero, and very few engine upgrades beyond a lesser spec car, makes it a far less enjoyable car.
your roadster (like my coupe), has seen a lot of work which takes it to a level that is probably already beyond the GP2. I'd keep enjoying that and give us more content.
I'm planning huge jobs for min R58 JCW this year. Suspension, Intercooler, Diff, Remap etc etc

Heck with “practical “! Drive it like you stole it and take us along! Golf R? Civic Type R? You let yourself down! You have deprived yourself and us😩 we love you and want the best for you. I think you made the right decision, I kind of got the feeling a little while back you weren’t absolutely certain about the GP3. You’ve absolutely not let anyone down, you have to do what’s right for you not just what you think is good for the channel. You’ve built up a fantastic channel anyway and it will continue.

Don't let it worry you how some others are able to acquire & go through cars, it boggles my mind sometimes aswell. You have a good channel with great content.
You can still take what you like about the GP & transfer those ideas to other car's.

Don’t worry TGE’s will be for sale in less than 6 months.😆😆. People don’t generally follow a car channel to see a specific car. It’s more the genre of cars and vehicles and the way it’s presented to the viewers which keeps people watching. There’ll be other cars, and we’ll still be watching.👍

I understand your anguish. Better to make the decision now. In 2017 I plumped for a Leon Cupra , saw it in the showroom , did the deal. I had 6 months with it , great fun but didn't really fit with my needs. Now I'm in a Cupra Ateca , right car this time. Yep I lost thousands from 6 months use. That you have found something and kept Ruby (I'd said before you would regret losing her as you have evolved her) means you have made the right decision. Waiting on Thursdays update.

Hi Pete, what a great commitment. The important thing about your experience was two issues. 1. The greatness of being able to stop him in time and say me wrong; It is a decision that only you can make and value and 2. The second question that seems to me the most important is that the essence that I take you today where you are, and it is due to the own decisions that based on your experience in life you were making.. Never lose this virtue. Greetings from Argentina.

There is the saving grace that Ruby Roadster won’t be feeling neglected, seriously though, I think you have taken the correct course of action, a car is usually the second most expensive purchase anyone makes after their house, so if there is any doubt at all, it is best to take a step back and have a think about whether or not the ownership satisfaction justifies the expense!.

Very sensible decision and clearly the right one. Getting one of the first in the country would have been great, for about a month until others started getting their's, so not a big deal at all. Plus, you will still get to drive one, just not have to pay for it. At the end of the day, you have to be sensible when spending that kind of money when you live in the real world.

  • @cinematographytrev

Your being totally honest with yourself. You have to go with how you feel and not be ruled by what would be good for your channel when at the end of the day it wouldn’t be good for you personally, and it most certainly wouldn’t be practical. It’s a nice car to have I grant you but good on you for your honesty and I look forward to your big reveal on Thursday. I wish you many many years of safe motoring in your new car.

I also wanted my first NEW car to be a MINI GP, but the monent it was announced that it was only automatic, I stopped saving up and bought something else. The other thing that turned me off was that 50% more GP3s will be made in comparison to the previous generations.
I would rather then spend my money on a GP1 is I can find it and/or a GP2.

As you i never owed anew car myself and currently i am driving a Holden (vauxhall) Insigina VXR 2016 which i am actually quite impressed with. Not sure if you no but over here in Australia car sales go my build Date and not the reg date like the uk so every year the dealers have to offer big discount to shift last year models my wife brought her new car 3 years ago a Nissan Xtrail 2.5L AWD brand new for as little as $28500 which reverts ti £14250 back into pound sterling so there is bargains to be had .

If a car can't do the things you need your car to do, it's not fit for purpose (at least for you in particular). That's why I bought the club man JCW; room for sporting equipment and dogs, while still being compact and not too expensive on the running costs. In a perfect world I'd be cruising around in a cayman S, but it just won't do what I need it to, so I bought a car that would.
The best car for you is the one that best suits your needs (and wants).

Pete, you are a man with passion. That’s always a good thing.
I agree with the never buy a brand new car, my GLA 45 was 18 months old when I bought it and it’s a stunner. Maybe you should try the GLA 45S when it becomes a year old?
One to make you smile though. In the Eighties I bought two new cars and you can see why I would never make a car purchaser that people would be interested in. 1981: Brand new Fiat Panda, great fun but rusted to nothing in 4 years and 65,000 miles. Followed by a Yugo 45GL, which devalued to almost nothing in 18 months. Don’t ask me for lottery numbers either...
From then on it was a decade or so of spectacularly rubbish second hand cars. They would have made great viewing..... good luck with your new purchase.

Understand the decision, Pete. I get your reasons and it must've been a tough call given your love for the brand.
As others have said, the JCW Clubman sounds a great compromise and I'm sure I've even read its 0.2sec quicker. Either way, the same power train and you've experienced it in the Clubman and M135i.
It will be interesting to see what you've picked. One thing is for sure there will be many days ahead when you review the GP and see one on the odd occasion where you'll always think 'what have I done' but you never know, the day may still come to acquire a nesrly new one at a great price in a year or so.

Peter...thank you for such an honest video and for giving us reasons behind your decision. I think you have made a brave and sensible move..the GP3 will no doubt be a great car and would have been fine You Tube content BUT you have a real life and that makes your channel very much more interesting to real people. Personally I have become tired of people buying McLaren’s, Huracan’s, hot Mercedes and many other things every few weeks...some we can understand how but others leave me puzzled. I prefer honesty..the GP3 would have been a short lived adventure and mostly driven you mad. I am glad you were brave...it has only happened to me once over a nearly new Shogun in 2006 and going back to the dealer was awful but it is the right thing to do. Now your new car...what might that be then?....I think I know but then it might be that angry Escort!!! Well done tonight...and roll on Thursday!!! Safe driving...😎😎😎😎😎
