How’s this for a hot hatch drag race line-up! Mat’s sat in the carwow Car of the Year 2021, the Toyota GR Yaris, and it’s going up against the MINI GP!
First up we have the GR Yaris, which is powered by a 1.6-litre 3 cylinder turbo engine to deliver 261hp 360Nm. As for the MINI GP? Well, it’s up on power, with a 2-litre 4 cylinder engine providing 306hp and 450Nm of torque!
However, power isn’t everything! The track’s pretty wet, and while the MINI is only front-wheel-drive, the GR Yaris is all-wheel-drive! Will that be enough to push Mat through to victory? Or will the manual gearbox in the Toyota ultimately lose out to the automatic MINI?

@Fire Heart The GR Yaris is far from being a rally car. In it's stock specs, it's nothing more than a hot hatch.

Both great cars made for different reasons. I would personally prefer the Mini with the Auto as it would make it much easier to live with and that pick up when under traction is serious, I bet it could challenge a lot of fast BMW, Audis.
It does, proper little beast that requires you to be on point when you drive it... tons of grip and brakes are insane... More like a fwd porsche 911 than a Mini.
Finally a drag race everyone wanted to see!
Would be good to see all the new generations of Cooper S or GP’s against each other. I’ve a little R53 would like to see how it does against the others.

A lot of people talking about the yaris seem to forget what makes it special, it's not a drag car, not even made for circuits. It's a modern rally ish car you can throw around like crazy

There’s no way you could beat a Mini GP I’ve owned x3 Countryman Cooper S JCW and they’re rapid enough a stripped Mini GP is a cooper s JCW Super charged with turbo and 306bhp and does over 160 mph

The mini is flying bro without some tuning the dirty Harris is done , only thing letting mini down is being front wheel drive. Front wheel drive and wet roads don’t do traffic light Grand Prix. May be Harris from standing start thanks to AWD and a good launch might achieve a better time than a Mini but as you can see on a rolling start the mini has it in the bag.
Love to see the new countryman mini with the 306 HP and AWD vs the Yaris
And the mini would have murdered the GR in the in the drag race but Carwow waited for the rain to make the race more interesting.

Mat Jesus Christ man. Don’t start in 4th and shift down to second, that’s the benefit of having a manual. Just be in second gear. Let the automatic have to shift down.
You just took away the 1 advantage of having a manual. You might as well drag races 2 automatic cars of your going to just shift it down yourself.

comparing apples & pears a2.0 l 4cyl against 1.6 l 3 cyl that yaris is doing very well.
You should do an these comparisons test on a loose surface with these 2 cars the GR Yaris, should win them all of the tests after all that is what the car is designed for

almost 100hp per cylinder. Sounds like its going to need a head gasket, piston rings, and valve seals every 15k miles.
First thing I'd do with my GR Yaris is disabling that stupid fake sound thingy. And after that I would go have a look at how much power I can get out of that tiny engine.

It didn't really pick up any better did it - there's delay in the signal being given by one car and received in the other. Guaranteed if it was the other way around, the Mini would jump six inches first before mullering the Yaris.
The sad thing is where I live, the GR Yaris cost the same price as a manual V8 mustang. Dealer mark up.

The Mini GP appears to have an aftermarket intake/wheels. Maybe that helped give it an edge. It’s possible it’s tuned too.

For use as a track car it would be hard to choose between these two but on uneven uk roads i cant think why anyone other than image snobs would buy the mini over the yaris.
Love these two cars and love the content.
For that price I'd rather take the mini. Thing literally flew past like it was in another league lol. GR still seems like a fun speedy car
depends on what you want off a car. I chose the Yaris. Its fun to throw around on mountain roads, handbrake it into serpentines or just scandi flick it, which is possible even on dry roads. Not so much the mini. But on a Autobahn situation of course the mini is quicker, while you do nothing but put your foot on the pedal and see the magic happen. Yay. Not enough action for me.

The 2.0l mini engine is very strong I have an all 4 clubman 306bhp and it gaps the golf R

@@stubones Everyone lost interest in the supra because, well, it sucked. The difference is the GR Yaris is actually a good car. Besides the "hype" it's just a very good driving car for a small amount of money.

And those times would be very inaccurate for drag racing a FWD car in the rain? Of course an AWD car should jump way ahead of a FWD car off the line drag racing in the rain. I think it's stupid that they even do these drag races in the rain, especially when one car is AWD and the other one isn't.
@@BLACK05GO1 can’t really help that with English weather... Technically would be accurate in England as the roads are either wet or poor condition 90% of the time.

@@RacingGB Hey where in the UK do you live?! Where i live in the south west of the UK it does not rain all the time, far from it. The roads are great and quite well maintained. In the south west we have warm summers and mild winters. I mowed my lawn this morning in a T shirt! Haha

No it shows which car is faster. It was wet and the Yaris had AWD, plus better tyres.
@@the___truth8038 the mini has 40 more horse power, and yes automatic trans are much smarter nowadays and know the best way to get you going. The Yaris also is made for rally so the gears are much shorter, proven by him having to drop 2 gears to keep up at the rolling launch. They’re both great cars made for different reasons

So in straight lines, the Yaris GR was completeley destroyed, even against a car with „only“ fwd, and a lot more weight and with rainy weather. Looks like a fun car not a fast car. 🤔

Automatic gearboxes likely save half a second for every gear.
Hardly in a different league considering it has nearly 50 more horsepower and didn't even beat the Yaris by much, and the Yaris has a manual box too!

@@joshjack6127 what do you mean it didn't beat the Yaris by much? Did you see how much faster it was travelling at the 1/4 mile mark? It only seemed close because it was wet and the Mini couldn't launch as well. In reality, the Mini is way, way faster.
