I'm working for myself now so a massive please buy my latest album and support me making more music you like - marktdkknight.... - it includes a remix of F1 2017 Fast Forward for goodness sake, and a track which was considered too shit to use in either DiRT 4 or F1 2017

The initial idea given to me for the soundtrack was to have a main theme, and then variations of the same theme throughout the front end. I decided to render them all together as a single track, as that's how I originally wrote them.

The second half of 2017 was legit the best part of my life so far and this soundtrack complements these memories so well.

2012 had the best soundtrack in my opinion
Connor Blair in '17 career mode was so slow, dull and sweaty so i got bored. AI were pretty bad and there were also a lot of glitches, not just in online but also in career. classics were cool but a bit of an afterthought.

When F1 2012 came out I said to myself, "this is the greatest game soundtrack ever", then 3 years passed and F1 2015 came and I said to myself "this is giving F1 2012 a run for its money", fast forward to 2017 and I can honestly say that this has to be the best game soundtrack ever created, its almost like something you'd find on a chill out album, all I know is that it's an amazing piece of music, as is all of the F1 2017 soundtrack, hope F1 2018 uses exactly the same soundtrack
Ben, wow - thanks. That's so kind of you to say so. The original brief given to me was chill out, but with no chord changes or drum/percussion loops. Well, we sort of got there in the end. There were lots of changes however, which I was not personally happy with.
Unfortunately 2018 is likely to have something completely different since I resigned from Codies the day the game came out. You never know, maybe they'll ask me to do '18, but I doubt that very much.
Anyway, your comments gave me a big smile, so thanks for that!
Mark Knight it's a shame to hear that you've resigned, the soundtracks to future F1 games just won't be the same. It's also a shame that parts of the music had to be cut (sorry about my terminology, music isn't a strong point for me), let's only hope you get asked to knock up the ST for 2018

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles! If it be known, I went through a very similar time whilst doing F1 2017 actually - crying before bed, waking up the next day wondering what sh1t was going to happen that day. And all it needed was a life change. Get rid of the thing which was causing the issue (which was possible for me). and it will improve - and it did.
I'm not saying that would work for you, but something will - it's just having the patience to find it as it may not be obvious.
I hope you find a better place soon and, mate, if the music helps in any way to get there - then that's fucking awesome! Take care!
BTW - this track actually helps me sleep better at night (not trying to say it's boring, haha, but it certainly is relaxing)

The first thing i noticed when i started F1 2017 was how awesome the music was, i found myself staring at the menus sometimes just listening to it. really fits the mood of racing with F1 cars and just very relaxing in general. as a truck driver i listen to it often on long journeys and it never gets old =)

I heard this by accident. A friend was configuring his wheel he got for Christmas. Totally and instantly grabbed me. Don't care about gaming that much, but this kept playing in my head. Having listened to it fully I can't put it into words how it makes me feel, but it feels good, very good. Masterpiece. Thx for this!
Oh fab - that’s great to hear. There is some interesting music out there in the gaming industry. A lot of it is very samey, but there are also a lot of gems when you find them.
18:06 with the introduction of that trumpet...it's like you can feel yourself sitting on the nose of your F1 car, before a big race, with the sun slowly setting, pondering what is to come. Goes with the overall slower beat of this year's soundtrack, as if it were a thoughtful bow, closing a remarkable run of soundtracks. Absolutely majestic.
Yes, a bit of a melancholic goodbye. Ironically, they didn't like that instrument or melody so it was taken out of the game at 00:35 - I put it back for this release as this is how I intended the soundtrack to sound originally. Thanks for your kind words, I'm pleased you enjoyed the run :)

Asterion You can always do league racing on this game mate. Age never matters there. In fact I'm just about 30 minutes till I race my first race with AOR (Apex Online Racing). I guarantee you go there as there is some incredible racing.

According a source, you worked alongside with Ian Livingstone on the previous F1 games, that's impressive. F1 2012 and 2013 had awesome soundtrack and sound design, and had the most classy menu since Metropolis Street Racer IMO. I no longer play F1 games but I was eager to hear the new soundtrack this year. Wow, I can confirm that the music is five stars. 25 minutes of pure gold. Thanks you for your work and for the URLs.
Well, I was responsible for the overall sound of the games back then, but credit for working directly with Ian falls to the audio leads on those games. I've worked with Ian more directly when he used me to play some violin for his Big Fat Gypsy Wedding soundtracks.

Another year and another awesome F1 soundtrack on the way. Always look forward to this time of the year despite never playing the F1 games themselves really. All about that music for me. As I said last year, racing games need more of this type of music.

In my defence though, I had zero budget for any live instrument recording, zero budget for new software or synthesisers- I had to buy everything out of my own salary. Very different styles of music though, I’m sure you’ll agree 😉

Used to listen to this when i was in my first year of uni. now im in my 6th year writing this comment while im doing last minute revision at 6am for my finals exam in a couple of hours listening to this song. I changed a lot as a person but my love for this piece is one of the few things that remains....

This soundtrack is the best and awesome in the Codemasters F1 franchise! It also has some soundtrack mixed from the 2016 and 2015 game for added nostalgia which gives me nostalgic moments... This is seriously way better than what Ian Livingstone made! You are a true and worthy successor to Ian Livingstone! The soundtrack of 2015 was good, 2016 was better and 2017 is the best! You have taken it to a new level! I have every single Codemasters F1 games starting from 2010.. This also makes me remember how I have grown up watching and playing F1! I am very sad to hear you have left Codemasters but before leaving you gave an excellent piece of work and left.. Ah thanks, in the end I chose to leave. I after what went on, it would have been rather uncomfortable for me to stay - so they got what they wanted at the end of the day.
I also wondered what it might have sounded like, given how the music has a much slower pace from 2018 onwards. Somewhat like in F1 2014. I would have definitely liked to hear some downtempo or ambient remixes of the 2015/2016/2017 soundtrack.
16:53 This music... When I hear it in the Invitational Events menu, and see the McLaren MP4/6 on the event thumbnails, it almost makes me cry, missing Senna.

They’ve only just made a soundtrack to rival this one… yet, this one is still soooo much better, you killed it Mark, this soundtrack is a masterpiece.
I guess it was only time Ian came back to the fold. I think it shows that, whilst the 2017 soundtrack went down well overall, I was never happy with this change in direction to a more ambient sound and and subsequent 3 soundtracks really were not F1. The Audio Lead failed comprehensively in pushing this so it's good to go back to Ian's style.
I actually only started doing the F1 music to save Codemasters some money whilst they were going through a difficult financial time in their life.

I live with that song! I can't believe you left codies. Absolute legend. This song translated says how much does your life cost & everything in just minutes. I have never cried to a song, except that. When I first bought F1 2017 the thing that grabbed me the moment i started playing for the first time was your song. I have never heard something more dramatic and the same time sad and happy. I have never been ,,grabbed" by any song, except this one. I can't believe I am able to hear this, I can't believe how awesome this song is, I can't believe this song exists. If there was a super reward ore smth it would have gone to you! I love the song! Ah well, you know - life has many different paths. I was going through a pretty bad patch whilst I was writing this as it happens and I think that came out in the writing. Ironically, I had to take out the melody at the beginning for the game version, but it's back to how I imagined it now.

Man, hearing this soundtrack during vacations or after a Grand Prix was something truly special, IMO it was made with passion, something the newer games don’t have
There was actually a lot of "me" put in to this soundtrack. It was a very difficult time in my life which is why it kinda sounds a bit sad....
2015 soundtrack was the best imo, but all of them are good. You did a very good job over the past years, sad that you won't make it for the next F1 game
Thank you. Yeah, 2015 was all me - no brief. Shame the mix isn't as good - I upgraded my speakers just at the end of 2016, so 2017 really benefited from that. Still a lot to learn though.

Hehe, thanks, yeah - a year on, perhaps it is better than I originally thought. I guess this is because this soundtrack was an absolutely nightmare to write... It simply had so many negative subconscious vibes. They're almost gone now. Almost, mind you. There are some people I hope I never ever see again in my entire life.
This composition is a masterpiece. Your life flashes before your eyes while listening to it. Feels like you stop and start looking back to all those memories, hardships, accomplishments you encountered in life and reanalyze where to go now..

I have grown older since 2017, and now I’ve gone from just liking this soundtrack, to feeling nostalgic about it, and now still seeing it as nostalgic but also analyzing its emotion and trying to apply it to my current life situation, which is similar to how it was in 2017. Idk why I had to say this but whatever lol

Before buying myself F1 2019, i gave F1 2017 a try because i was quite scared of ERS Management haha! But i am really glad i did. Even though i bought F1 2019, i still kept playing this until finishing the season because of this awesome soundtrack. Hoping to see your work again in other F1 games or maybe in other games!

I give them 5 years before EA kill them off. I previously worked at Bullfrog... and you may know what happened to them.... it's not changed. EA probably just bought Codies with their spare cash in the bank, just to prevent Take Two from doing so.

Slight difference - Ian wanted to return... or was paid enough too. I remember him telling me years ago that he never wanted to do another F1 soundtrack.
I don't want to return simply because of people like Stephen Root and Brad Porter that I'd have to deal with.
Imagine trying to constructively dismiss someone the day they returned to work from paternity leave..... well.. that's what those two wankers tried, and failed, to do.

Fantastic track, sir. I don't know if you also did the F1 2014 main theme, but I loved that one too. It has a kind of cyberpunk vibe to it, like it would fit well in a game like Deus Ex. This track, at least the first 5 minutes, would too. It's gorgeous.

The front end menu music is so awesome, gives me the chills listening to it and I feel like it promotes an internal uprising of ones confidence
Actually, as it happens, my confidence was really low whilst writing this as I'd already had two soundtracks rejected. This was based on a design I said early on was in a style I wasn't comfortable with, but was able to get some changes made so I had a chance at writing something half decent.

I wanted an F1 game just to pass time, i picked up this game for 10 bucks the other day, its the first codemasters game where this type of music works for me. Never liked how they treated music in WRC games, but in this one, its beautiful, great job

@@MarkTDKKnight In particular I really like how gritty this iteration of the soundtrack feels, it manages to stand out from previous years despite having familiar motifs. Have you ever imagined about what direction you might have wanted to take the score in had you kept doing the game soundtracks?
@@sulphurous2656 I have over an hour's worth of music where I was intending to take the soundtrack. This was for 2017. I wanted to reduce the electronic element and bring in more rock band and orchestral elements and fuse it with the electronic sound. But there was more inexperienced people, who I actually put in charge of the decision making, then got the knives out and decided that they could remove me from the project by rejecting everything I did and using my negativity as a way to try constructively make me redundant. They failed, but I left anyway with a nice payment and gagging order stating that I couldn't speak about this. Fuck that. They caused severe mental anxiety which I will never forgive them for. Trying to suspend me the day, by email with smily emoticos, before my daughter was born. What a bunch of cunts. Being a sound engineer, I recorded the entire interview. They had not clue what they were doing. No way I would work for such a nasty shitty company ever again.
For example, this was going to be the 2017 championship win tune.

This is still shocking to read, I can't believe they would treat someone in a role like that (especially someone who was involved as the audio lead for the better part of a decade). Yet somehow I'm still not surprised at seeing such examples in the industry. Also, really interesting to hear a glimpse of the unused parts of the soundtrack.
