"i dont see the light i saw in you before" hits... sometimes you fall in love with their potential only to find that the person you really need to love is yourself
I'm also older, and can't stand 99% of modern music, but my ears perked up a few years back when I heard her first hit. I thought I should've hated it, but I liked. Now, the more I dig, the more I like. Thank God an actual artist made it. She kind of reminds me of Bowie in a weird way. No way am I as much a fan, nor is her music as broad, but she has his free aesthetic to do whatever she wants. At least it's not packaged by a group of bs label runners and producer/agents. The ironic thing about this song is it's really a borderline rock song. The drums and bass are kicking, and there is real (or simulated) guitar in it. It's not some boring overused trap beat, and she's not working in the sh*t vocal lane that so many modern vocalists overuse with the bad rapping and autotune. This is actually very 80s underground, even though modernized. It's because she came from Vancouver, a place with some brains.
I just worked a whole afternoon listening to Grimes, I can't believe the variety of music she produces and how consistent the quality is.. I'm a fan out of nowhere
Ya I've been a fan for awhile now I like thise little videos she does like on tip a building. It's older. But that's my favorite one. Ppl should stop being dicks about grimes. I see that shit.
I’m very upset Grimes regrets making this whole album & doesn’t like it whatsoever, it’s a masterpiece & it’s what made me obsessed with her, I listened to this nonstop for 2 years, and still listen to it all the time... it’s just TIMELESS. ❤️
If you find her tweet replying to Stereogum sharing that article, you'll see she doesn't actually hate the album. Safe to say the interviewer misunderstood her.
@@missLeamon2023 oh, when i wrote this i was referring to her music 😃 and years before i comment this, it kinda bothered me >the way she changed her work and ideas< 'cause it was >so abruptly< and made no sense to me as fan. and also, to me, the fact she became a mother doesn't make her any better... anyway, i still like her work 🤷🏼♀️ just doesn't hit as before.
FUN FACT: the tattoo on her hand that says 'Beautiful ' was giving to her for free from a tattoo artist that wanted to go to her concert in New Zealand :)
@@MermaidQueendom well maybe they should go watch it then if interested. I don’t get the point of your comment, like of course not everyone has seen it that’s kind of the point of the person you replied to stating that- to inform those who haven’t seen it.

🎶 babyyyy believeeee meeeeeeeeeeeee 🎶 and you had every chance you destroy everything that you know 🎶 plus the way her body snapped with the beat at 1:19 is a good sign she might have her ears inside a loop for 8 hours a day 😉
Nope, because the beat itself isn't proof of advanced prolonged production. It would've been present in the acoustic guitar draft. There is no real evidence for or against.
It's likely she is naturally talented and chose the complex timbres and textures herself. That is probable. But advanced sound engineering in addition to composition? That's improbable. Possible, but improbable. It's not even a male vs female issue. It would be very difficult for anyone.
Why do so many people think creating a pop song is "selling out"? The only way to sell out in music is to create lazy shit that misses its mark. This is the opposite of that. This is ambitious and addictive music, with aching, subtly hauting lyrics that reach out universally: in short, pop music at its best. And like all music at its best, this is HARD to pull off so well. This is like a sugary confection that's been burnt with a cigarette lighter, just at the edges. Listen closer. There's a darkness at the heart of this. If all contemporary pop sounded this good, I'd still be a mainstream radio listener.
Oh, fuck yeah. If she and Elon end up marrying and help advance Mankind to being a truly space-fairing, interplanetary Society they will be the two heads of a union of a Tech,Space and Commerical Empire.
Only if dropping the ball by inappropriately sharing way too much with an unstable bipolar stranger is history being kind. So funny reading Grimes fans childlike space fantasies about this girl and her ex-boyfriend.
+lowlymusic Exactly what I thought after digesting her new album. From what I understand she created the Visions album on her personal computer which is highly admirable! There is a bright future for this young lady!
+Mailman Clarence I've heard lots of impressive stuff made with Garage Band, Cubase, Reaper, etc. DAWs. Helps to have some very good VST plugins that can realistically reproduce instruments, as well as some VSTs to manipulate those with various effects. And you can always mix in sounds with old analog guitar pedals. Lots of possibilities. Just have to tinker around a lot, and find that exact effect you have in mind.
Me too . I’m a little ashamed to say but I never knew of her till Elon musk then I looked her up . And wow 🤩 she’s so much more interesting I can see why he would totally be in to her she’s very smart and out of the box . I’m only happy I found her she and her music feel like therapy through chaotic emotions that this life can pull is in and out of . Her music feels Relatable to all who feel like lost is where they can feel found
So many hipster elitists bitching about the pop sound and I'm just sitting over here like if all pop music sounded like this then I'd be listening to pop all the damn time tbh
+Jenya March I dunno what Diamandis is (not hipster enough) but yeah, Chvrches is pop unless you're in high school and think pop is only what the preps and jocks like
+L Khokhlakov Marina Diamandis = Marina and the Diamonds Sweetie, I never said that Marina, Chvrches, or even this song wasn't pop. I said that this song reminded me of their sound more than Taylor's or Avril's. *Not all pop sounds the same.*
"Sounds like every pop song" makes it seem like your exposure to pop is either very limited, or you simply snob all pop music for the sake of snobbing pop. Pop music is eclectic. This song shares the same identifying core element factors (verse-chorus structure, hooks, etc.), but otherwise it does /not/ sound like most other pop music. Funny enough (and I laugh as I say this next part because of all the indie snobs that scoff at this song), it sounds like indie-pop, because it clearly is borrowing from post-punk sounds, is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free, and aside from the two other artists that I mentioned earlier (Marina and the Diamonds and Chvrches), I cannot think of any other popular artist with this specific take on pop. So, yeah. This does NOT sound like "every pop song". Please open your ears.
Funny fact: I used to like grime's aesthetic but not her music until I ate mescaline and danced to Grimes for 6 hours straight and now she's my favourite artist forever

@@alil3231 Maybe something amongst the lines of visual arts or audiovisual production. This type of careers might help you gain references and different techniques that you can explore until you find the one or the ones that you like. However there are many ways you can explore "expression" without the terms of "academy", i don't know if it sounds dumb but tiktok is full of homemade videos that have this vibe, they are good examples. You can also take courses that teach you how to work different softwares like the adobe suite, etc. these are great tools for creating out of the ordinary compositions in terms of images, videos and audio c:
This song sounds like something Gorrillaz would've produced: so timeless. Still sounds futuristic. Almost like how people in the 80's would've thought music in the 2020's would sound.
+Ephra Sant it does, she followed very commercial pop structures, research max martin, he has monopolized the music industry with radio pop . thats what this song is modeled after :/

I found this song a few months after it first dropped randomly one day on RUclips. At the time, I was going through a really messy and horrible close friendship breakup and the lyrics really resonated with me. I downloaded the song and played it over and over and over again. This video still holds such a special place in my heart ♥️ this song in particular really pulled me through a very tough time
Hmm, I'm actually getting early 00s vibes from this. Which is pure awesomeness. We need some modern stuff drawing roots from what I refer to as the golden era of pop music.
I just discovered this song for the first time at 2:30am and I feel like a changed person. I completely feel transcendent when listening to this song & watching the music video. Something on a cosmic level connects with me and this tune. I can’t explain it with words. It’s all feeling.
The lyrics in this song really get to me. I've had my fair share of failed relationships, one ended recently, and to listen to this gives me strength, it's a song about letting go of any toxic person who used to try and control your life. But "I don't care anymore". Thank you from my aching heart that still heals, Grimes. It means the world to me and I can't get enough of it.
Absolutely 100% ditto. I listened to this song religiously when my ex & I started having problems which lead to us splitting up. "It's nice that you say you like me - but only conditionally"
Anyone complaining she's trying to be mainstream or something should look at the album artwork for Art Angels. You don't put that on a cover to sell copies, you put it on the cover because you want to. She is totally in control of her artistic output. There's no pandering. She's making what she wants to. Get over it.
+funployee even if she wants to go mainstream, there's no problem with it! Hardworking artists deserve success, and mainstream with your art is just fine, it will help fun her life, tours, more albums. :)
+Kat Burns (KASHKA) I agree with you completely. I'm sure the members of the morality police complaining on here do their jobs for the love of it and turn down raises when they're offered. "I can't accept that raise, it would be selling out."
+aex hooder wasn't casting aspersions on the quality of the art, only the commercial appeal of something so untraditional and, to an outside party, strange. I love the artwork she does for her albums.
*ok for all the people complaining about her becoming mainstream and selling out etc:* just because her music is sounding of more like generic pop on mainstream radio doesn't mean she sold out?? (well she's always been a pop artist tho) if you pay attention to grimes, you would know that she loves all kinds of music, she doesn't give a fuck if the music is mainstream or not. she's very open about loving artists like lil wayne, nicki, madonna , selena etc to "good music" like tame impala, joanna newsom, the national to virtually unknown artists like st beauty and moon king. why do people dislike artists when they "sound mainstream"? david bowie was basically a mainstream artist, does that mean he's a sellout?? grimes wrote, produced like all of her work, she is one of most genuine, open minded artists out there, give her a break. honestly, if she re-did visions i bet y'all would complain about how she's the same and you wanted more from her etc etc like honestly she is an actual person, she isn't born to be your "indie goddess", she isn't making music to make you cool and different, she will not change what she desires in her music to suit your stupid standards (i.e not a sellout, sellouts do whatever to please the audience right??? bc thats how u make mo money???) stop nagging and let her be, you all need to get over yourselves smh
+jenny jojo let's not forget that artists need to SELL music to make a living. there's nothing wrong into mixing her weird sounds with a more popular structure. it's actually really smart
+jenny jojo EXACTLY!! Claire (aka Grimes) said it in an interview Art Angels was the portrayal of Grimes in a contemporary context, essentially using these inner contemporary characters, not only redefining her as an artist but also going back to the music that she listened to when she was growing up.
+iBenTV I don't fault her for it, I just wish she wouldn't do it under the "Grimes" name. I've bought Grimes music for years for something melodic and ethereal, her songs have literally been my lullabies for years now.
honestly when I first listened to her new singles I was like "what the fuck is she doing? these are just pop songs" and I thought she was regressing as an artist because her older stuff was so new and fresh sounding. But honestly, after listening to these songs more than once I was wrong. These songs are so solid and the problem was that I had put her in a box and just expected more of what she's already done. There's still a whole bunch of good reference points in her music like always, she's just producing music in a more accessible way.
+Fredde jpg I love when people realize this about artists, that they're human and organic and pop is a powerful tool to convey a message, Honestly she's becoming more of herself, and it feels more authentic because of what she made before.
Creme Souda I read an interview where she said she's annoyed that people assume she's making pop music just because the production and mixing is better. and shes kinda right
True, I like the fact that her songs have better production, what I don't like is that she used to write in a very ambiguous way and about many things and not just about love for another person and disappointments since she's a free soul and I'm sure she knows better.
Some people have not yet attained to that level of Cerebral Awesomeness that we Grimes Fans have and can be terribly off-putting, so I get it. Sometimes, ya just can't see that sorta thing
Music is meant to be unbinding flows, never restricts itself to form, but solidifies around the notions of beats and rhythm. Grimes is producing POP, as well as herself. By far, one of the best musicians.
I feel like she'd be a great actor, it's cool how in this video she's playing multiple characters, but it's more than a costume change. Her mannerisms, facial expressions, and it's like her whole attitude changes between the different looks.
You claw, you fight, you lose Got a doll that looks just like you Remember when we used to say "I love you" almost every day I saw a light in you Going out as I closed our window You never liked me anyway I don't see the light I saw in you before And now I don't, and now I don't And now I don't care anymore (And now I don't care anymore) Baby, believe me And you had every chance You destroyed everything that you know (Uncontrollable) If you don't need me Just let me go You hate, you bite, you lose After all, I just don't like you It's nice that you say you like me But only conditionally Your voice, it had the perfect flow It got lost when you gave it up though Cause you want money You want fame I don't see the light I saw in you before And now I don't, and now I don't And now I don't care any more (And now I don't care any more) Baby, believe me And you had every chance You destroyed everything that you know (Uncontrollable) If you don't need me Just let me go Baby, believe me And you had every chance You destroy everything that you know (Uncontrollable) If you don't need me Just let me go Baby, believe me And you had every chance You destroyed everything that you love (Uncontrollable) If you don't need me Just let me go
The "parenthetical" line that follows "And now I don't care anymore" is not a repeat of that line but "You're unloveable". That's what I hear, anyway. As for the part at 2:59, that's *really* hard. I don't blame you for not even trying. :-) Here's a rough approximation [my notes in brackets]: Ooh-oo-oo-ooh, ooh-oo-oo-ooh Ay, ay, oh, oh / Stumble out backward, down, baby [last word very speculative!] And your heart played its sad song [but last 2 words look like "so so" in the lip-sync] On the ground, underneath me And the with-you dream can hurt Ay, ay [but 2nd word in lip-sync looks like "aif"] Oh, no And your heart gave me up though / You're unlovable

I don't understand how I've never heard Grimes in the radio before, her songs are catchy yet meanful and feel good. This song especially it's my favorite by her, and I'm not even a fan but it just puts me in some sort of mood. These songs saved my quarantine playlist.
i feel like she's going to be one of the best producer/artists of the 21st century, and I don't mean the type to be topping charts, but the kind to create real good music, and be known for it.
she had potential with oblivion, Vanessa and genesis but good lord, this song and kill v. Maim are repetitively lame with lyrics that make little sense and not only make no sense, she recycled lyrics; so if you mean the best producer and bla bla of the 21st century following the list of other unoriginal sell out producers and generally everybody else in the music business that came before her? then yes sure, she's a real good shot.
This is going to ridiculous, but sometimes listening to Grimes is the only thing that makes me calm down from my PTSD and anxiety, she reminds me of how I was when I was a teen before the trauma hit (I'm 25 now with PTSD) and probably how I would've grown up if my creativity was allowed to flourish and I wasn't pushed into a pit of anxiety to the point I can't live my daily life. :(
Grimes is the kind of artist people will look at in the future and think that she was extremely ahead of her time I think. And Mitski p.s this will probably receive a lot more "(insert artist) too" comments so just to clarify i only mentioned two of my favorite artists because i thought no one would see this comment y'all yes i know arca, gaga, sophie, charli, etc are/were ahead of their time too and some earlier artists too like kate bush, pj harvey, björk that influenced them so um yeah
a friend who LOVES grimes, showed me this video and i was so intrigued with it and also fell in love with this song. i cant stop replaying it! much love x
I had her first record for a while and thought it was OK, but then I saw her at Coachella in the spring (streaming) and she just blew me away, singing lots of songs from artangels, which I think is one of the best records ever, not one weak song, they don't come along too often, maybe once a decade or so
The guitar riff she plays in Flesh Without Blood is a ringer for Richard Thompson's 'Calvary Cross'. Kudos to Grimes, not that she needs it. I only realised this from Ethel Cain.
that reversed vocal clip at 0:01 is her singing "oooh wanna lose yourself" when flipped back to normal. i used a sound editor cuz i really wanted to know what she was saying : )
That is the purpose of catchy pop tested formulas that make us like a song for commercial reasons. Didn't you watch the movie "Josie and the Pussycats? ;-)
i love claire. i hope her fanbase doesn't become saturated with kids who dont value production or how hard she puts into grimes mv, songs, concerts, etc. after people hear her song in suicide squad.
also would love it if tøp fans would stop commenting about how theyre here from tyler. the "clique" really made me worn out from tøp by commenting everywhere and not valuing the music as much as they do shit like letting everyone know they're a fan or dumb inside jokes. enjoy the grimes like tyler does. check out kill v maim
These "Stan" kids ruin everything with comparing artists and putting pressure on these artists to constantly stay on top. I just wanna enjoy the music and love the art. I guess I'm gonna have to just stop reading the comments.
Claire, idk if you will actually read this or if you even have anything to do with this channel but I will leave this in hopes that one day you do. About a year ago I first discovered you and it was during a very dark time in my life. When I found this video I literally kept it on repeat for days and I just wanted to thank you personally because your beautiful voice and music saved me from doing the unthinkable. So so so much love, thank you Claire - one of your many fans Alice ❤
I had the same about 11 years ago. Grimes music helped me overcome depression. I had severe depression for about 3 years, thanks to the help of friends, doctors and... everyday with Grimes music I won. Today I return to her music with a smile. I don't know what it is, but a lot of people had it... we love you Grimes! ❤️
I was falling in love. I was imagining a life together, etc, and then this song drops, and I'm imagining the break up, moving on, and dancing freely. lmao that was one weird week a year ago.
She's to good to be compared to Uptown Funk or other bs in the charts. I actually appreciate that she isn't chart topping. Her aesthetics would die if she is a Top 40 artist. I love her and I think she's a masterwork of a woman, but I don't think she should be in the charts
writing this from the year 2145 and cant believe our android rulers emperor elon and empress grimes used to live in a world where trees were not holograms and food was still the human's leading source of sustenance. On the bright side her music is still great and they haven't aged a day and there definitely isn't a surveillance regime that monitors all thought and media which then compels us to disguise our true ideas about our unfeeling android rulers. I am praising them from my own free will. After all, thanks to the Boring Co. I am finally able to escape the radioactive pit that is Seattle and finally move into the warm tunnels of the Underground in the sunken metropolis of Los Angeles. Loyalty be to the Boring Company. Salute.
I believe the "angel" is named Ivy, and she was supposed to be the oldest of all the personas. One's a gamer-girl, she's the most modern and youngest. And the "princess" you're talking about is actually supposed to mimic Marie Antoinette. If I recall correctly, Claire (Grimes) actually stated the setting behind this was to go back in time and kill that Marie character. I'm assuming the other characters were incarnations of Ivy, but that's a guess. Interesting, none the less!
I wouldn’t call this just Pop per say. More like Dream Pop. I know that’s still Pop technically, but it’s so far from anything you hear on the radio & everything that is deemed popular Pop music. Grimes is incredible. She’s brilliant. She’s for sure an artist too as she hates much of her older music. Artists are always *extremely* hard on themselves. I experience that same self-disparagement as a writer & film photographer. I’ve won many awards & had galleries showings for my photography, selling my prints for a significant amount of money too (anywhere from $100-400 per print, depending on if it’s framed too), yet I still tear apart anything & everything I’ve created, more so with my writing & poetry in particular, though I’ve moved to prose primarily now. I’m also an academic, with an undergraduate degree from Columbia University & a graduate degree in Anthropology from there as well, & I’m pursuing a PhD in Anthropology next. I’m a straight A student & praised for my writing in regard to my academic work, but I, again, tear it all apart & often feel embarrassed & ashamed about my work in spite of all the success I’ve had at university, let alone attending a prestigious university twice this far, with a very good chance of attending a prestigious university for my PhD as well. I would love to stay at Columbia, but they prefer for students to have experiences at different universities & it’s already a great feat that I was accepted twice in a row, as well as having been accepted to the university’s Teachers College in between, though choosing to pursue Anthropology instead. So really I was accepted thrice in a row, which is very much unheard of as, again, these top universities prefer not only for students to have different experiences at different universities but they also like to mix it up with the students they accept. I actually wasn’t accepted to the two other graduate programs to which I applied along with Columbia, both other schools in NYC (The New School & Hunter College). The acceptance rates are *much* higher at those universities & although very good schools, they are not considered as the same caliber as Columbia. Ultimately I felt like a failure, like I only was accepted to Columbia as I had connections there & two professors from there - & the third with multiple graduate degrees from there - wrote my recommendations for the graduate program, so I felt that those recommendations & connections were the only reasons I was accepted. I felt like an imposter (Imposter Syndrome in which one feels like one doesn’t belong, far less worthy & valuable - if at all - from those around one), from which I suffered during undergraduate as well. I’m extremely grateful that I was accepted, & I believe I’ve proved my capabilities being that I have a 4.0 GPA & I am often praised by my professors, some of whom I’ve grown quite close to, one of whom I’ve been very close with since undergraduate, so ten years ago (as I’m thirty now & I began taking courses with her at 20, & she took me under her wing & became not only a mentor to me but also an incredibly supportive & uplifting figure in my life & she’s agreed - having already assumed - that she’ll be writing one of my recommendations for the PhD. I only have a semester left for the graduate program, but after only one semester, I had acquired the other two recommendations (three required) for the PhD program. Needless to say, I have *many* people - especially such revered professors with tenure - in my corner & yet I am *EXTREMELY* hard on myself & often don’t feel good enough whatsoever, leading me to spiral into severe depressive episodes. At times, I even become s**c*d*l… as I have such little faith in myself particularly during those times of profound melancholia, of course. I want to believe in myself & assure myself that I can do something *great* as that’s been my dream since I was *very* young, elementary school age- *greatness* but I doubt myself all the time to the point that I feel as if it’ll destroy me, that my mind & mental health is sabotaging me. I just rambled *way* too much, & no one will ever read this. Yet I want to say one last thing: Grimes is such an inspiration as no matter how much she doubts herself, she keeps creating no matter what, following her passions no matter how she feels or down she becomes & in spite of all the suffering she’s had to endure, in particular the loss of multiple friends in a short span of time, just several years I believe,. I’ve had *MANY* losses too with almost all of them *not* being natural - instead via h*m*cide, s**cide, overdoses, illness, car accident, etc. - with the first at only five years old, affecting me profoundly even though I was so young - & the most recent one only two years ago. Many people whom I’ve lost were those I loved *most* in the world… family members with whom I was closest within my external family & the only boy I ever loved who died in my arms, with these losses (three family members from h*micide all at once & then that boy almost exactly ten years apart, with only a month in difference)… I let these losses destroy me for many years, my Complex PTSD & mental health issues ruling my life, rendering me unable to truly live. It’s taken *A LOT* of intensive trauma therapy (EMDR) to begin to heal. I don’t believe you ever get over such trauma; you just learn to live with the pain & find happiness in spite of it. My metaphor for life is that it’s like a river of sh*t & there are stones that allow you to cross the river. Those stones are happiness & it’s those moments of happiness that keep you going. If you are seeking “happiness” via euphoria instead (addictive behavior like dr*g use or the thrill from other self-harmful behaviors) then the stones are made of sand & will crumble beneath your feet. The moments of happiness are indeed fleeting; the small moments that light up one’s eyes with stars, & yet they make life not only survivable but livable & imbued with a sense of genuine hope in spite of all the suffering that is inevitable to life itself, originating with the very pain that is consciousness itself (ask Frankenstein’s monster about what it means to suddenly be thrust into consciousness & having to think & feel so very profoundly, without an end to it except when it’s dulled via such euphoria, false happiness. Anyway I’m still ranting even though I said I’d write only one last thing. This really is the end. I just want to thank Grimes (or Claire) one last time for being part of creating those moments of happiness, in which one indeed dances freely as if no one is watching.
God… I wrote a novella for my comment in reply… oops! I dare you to read it all! lol I *know* no one will take me up on that. Oh well! Enjoy the music resultant of her brilliance & live a joyous life!
For any Grimes fans who are watching this video. Claire (Grimes) wrote this song to Grimes. She became frustrated with the persona she created and they were on bad terms for awhile. They made up and this song is the end result. It's a beautiful depiction of how we all battle with our own ego at times.
+ohBTW really? for me it kinda looks like she wrote this song for her "fans" that criticized her when she released go "You hate, you bite, you lose After all, I just don't like you It's nice that you say you like me But only conditionally Your voice, it had the perfect glow It got lost when you gave it up though Cause you want money You want fame"

Facts!! going through that right now.
I am almost 58, I am so happy I came across Grimes a few months ago. I so love her music. I can't stop listening to her. Love your music Grimes!
omg linda fellow grimes fan... I'm glad you enjoy her music xx
Aww
You are so cool! Thank you for sharing with us :))
It's because she came from Vancouver, a place with some brains.
same. just recently came across her and I can say I´m obsessed!
Real shit
This and reality are on repeat for me. Is there any other songs like those two from her? I can listen to this 10 times straight haha.

I’m very upset Grimes regrets making this whole album & doesn’t like it whatsoever, it’s a masterpiece & it’s what made me obsessed with her, I listened to this nonstop for 2 years, and still listen to it all the time... it’s just TIMELESS. ❤️
Believe me, she probably changed her mind again 20 minutes later, That is why she is so much fun.
It may because the lyrics are personal and contrast the feelings she has now.
If you find her tweet replying to Stereogum sharing that article, you'll see she doesn't actually hate the album. Safe to say the interviewer misunderstood her.
She needs a slap and tell her this is good
where did she said that? i'm a bit shook because this album is a timeless masterpiece imo
shes a random free spirit who cant be compared to anyone.. her creativity invokes something in your soul and its hauntingly beautiful
Yesssss well said
I feel she's this generation's Björk. Totally free, absolutely unapologetic.

aka very impressive......
so she says..
🎶 babyyyy believeeee meeeeeeeeeeeee 🎶 and you had every chance you destroy everything that you know 🎶
plus the way her body snapped with the beat at 1:19 is a good sign she might have her ears inside a loop for 8 hours a day 😉
Nope, because the beat itself isn't proof of advanced prolonged production. It would've been present in the acoustic guitar draft.
There is no real evidence for or against.
idk then.. she just too gorgeous anyways so how could she be such an amazing sound engineer. she mustn't have it all. DOWN WITH GRIMES.

Amen to that. My thoughts exactly.

I've heard lots of impressive stuff made with Garage Band, Cubase, Reaper, etc. DAWs. So many hipster elitists bitching about the pop sound and I'm just sitting over here like if all pop music sounded like this then I'd be listening to pop all the damn time tbh
Also, I personally got much more of a Marina Diamandis and Chvrches vibe from this more than a Taylor or Avril one... ? (and thank god for that)
+Jenya March I dunno what Diamandis is (not hipster enough) but yeah, Chvrches is pop unless you're in high school and think pop is only what the preps and jocks like
That's kind of ironic considering this sounds like every pop song
+L Khokhlakov Marina Diamandis = Marina and the Diamonds
Sweetie, I never said that Marina, Chvrches, or even this song wasn't pop.
Contexting this as a friendship breakup just makes it so relatable.

Hey bjork
+Sakuems true people are dumb
+jenny jojo EXACTLY!! Claire (aka Grimes) said it in an interview Art Angels was the portrayal of Grimes in a contemporary context, essentially using these inner contemporary characters, not only redefining her as an artist but also going back to the music that she listened to when she was growing up.

honestly when I first listened to her new singles I was like "what the fuck is she doing? these are just pop songs" and I thought she was regressing as an artist because her older stuff was so new and fresh sounding.
Creme Souda I read an interview where she said she's annoyed that people assume she's making pop music just because the production and mixing is better. and shes kinda right
this comment chain's philosophy should be applied to Fitz and the tantrums new music
True, I like the fact that her songs have better production, what I don't like is that she used to write in a very ambiguous way and about many things and not just about love for another person and disappointments since she's a free soul and I'm sure she knows better.
I had the same reaction at first, then i realized, who am i to say what "her style" is.
This is the best track grimes has made its perfect. People don't know how well produced this is, its insane.

Here's a rough approximation [my notes in brackets]:
Ooh-oo-oo-ooh, ooh-oo-oo-ooh
Ay, ay, oh, oh / Stumble out backward, down, baby [last word very speculative!]
And your heart played its sad song [but last 2 words look like "so so" in the lip-sync]
On the ground, underneath me
And the with-you dream can hurt
Ay, ay [but 2nd word in lip-sync looks like "aif"]
Oh, no
And your heart gave me up though / You're unlovable

Yes I did :)
I quite literally have listened to this everyday for 5 months

I don't understand how I've never heard Grimes in the radio before, her songs are catchy yet meanful and feel good. This song especially it's my favorite by her, and I'm not even a fan but it just puts me in some sort of mood. These songs saved my quarantine playlist.
Here in Austria she does get played on the radio :)
@@JeanneDArte glad to hear about it! I think maybe 2022 would be a great year for Grimes in the radio, she is even on a TV show now! :)

They play Grimes on the radio at Target. That's when I first got this song stuck in my head
Me and my mom used to always dance around with these mvs playing when i was around 15 or 16... i miss those days, i miss her
i feel like she's going to be one of the best producer/artists of the 21st century, and I don't mean the type to be topping charts, but the kind to create real good music, and be known for it.
calm down there buddy.
+Akira Same :D
+Akira I FEEL YOU
she had potential with oblivion, Vanessa and genesis but good lord, this song and kill v.
I hope she dosent go mainstream because most artists are shit and the fans too
I'm 45 years old and I luv grimes. She sounds like the 90s rave, Bjork, some 80s music.
Claire, I have one thing, one simple thing to say to you : THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU. That is all. Much love.
This is a masterpiece. This is something so different. I listen to this several times a week.
Wish you to recover to your former fun, happy and brave self. Good Grimes is so soothing. I feel the same.
Keep pushing. This will pass too.
Relate. You're not alone x
You just explained my whole life right there

HAHA damn, Eggs, er det deg? Navnet og tegninga og alt. Jævlig tilfeldig å se deg igjen på en youtube video.
Unequivocally.
Grimes is the kind of artist people will look at in the future and think that she was extremely ahead of her time I think. And Mitski
p.s this will probably receive a lot more "(insert artist) too" comments so just to clarify i only mentioned two of my favorite artists because i thought no one would see this comment y'all yes i know arca, gaga, sophie, charli, etc are/were ahead of their time too and some earlier artists too like kate bush, pj harvey, björk that influenced them so um yeah
YESEES
nah, she's a pervert
Ivana Tinkle lol calling her a satan worshipper in another thread and now a pervert? What’s your source ma’am
TASTE ugh two of my fav artists

Still listening to this 7 years later
I don' t know any other artist with such a fantasy... Grimes is a creative Mulititalent, a true Artangel
She is so cool and ethereal at the same time.
a friend who LOVES grimes, showed me this video and i was so intrigued with it and also fell in love with this song. i cant stop replaying it! much love x
I had her first record for a while and thought it was OK, but then I saw her at Coachella in the spring (streaming) and she just blew me away, singing lots of songs from artangels, which I think is one of the best records ever, not one weak song, they don't come along too often, maybe once a decade or so
Me too, I play this album all day every day since I was turned on to it. Grimes is amazing!
so addicted to this song
Love "Genesis" too xoxo
+Cngwt96
Agreed!!!!!!!!! I love her
The guitar riff she plays in Flesh Without Blood is a ringer for Richard Thompson's 'Calvary Cross'.
Kudos to Grimes, not that she needs it.
I only realised this from Ethel Cain.
that reversed vocal clip at 0:01 is her singing "oooh wanna lose yourself" when flipped back to normal. i used a sound editor cuz i really wanted to know what she was saying : )
I thought I didn't like her music at first... But damn this is so catchy 🎧
i know right
but i have always. liked her music

That is the purpose of catchy pop tested formulas that make us like a song for commercial reasons. Didn't you watch the movie "Josie and the Pussycats? ;-)
+José Luis Enríquez lol shut up mate
Can we stop and appreciate how amazing her performance is in this video?
Yes💅🏼

rip grimes, she aint dead but she sure is gone
She broke up with elon
i love claire. i hope her fanbase doesn't become saturated with kids who dont value production or how hard she puts into grimes mv, songs, concerts, etc. after people hear her song in suicide squad.
also would love it if tøp fans would stop commenting about how theyre here from tyler. the "clique" really made me worn out from tøp by commenting everywhere and not valuing the music as much as they do shit like letting everyone know they're a fan or dumb inside jokes. enjoy the grimes like tyler does. check out kill v maim
These "Stan" kids ruin everything with comparing artists and putting pressure on these artists to constantly stay on top. I just wanna enjoy the music and love the art. I guess I'm gonna have to just stop reading the comments.
sameeee
+Josh same dude same
who cares, more visibility for her, more success she deserves it !
Hope you are good now❤
I had the same about 11 years ago. Grimes music helped me overcome depression. I had severe depression for about 3 years, thanks to the help of friends, doctors and... everyday with Grimes music I won. Today I return to her music with a smile. I don't know what it is, but a lot of people had it... we love you Grimes! ❤️

Absolutely beautiful, such power she can have over my mind body and soul. I too stayed afloat all because of her, Lana Del Rey and Bjork
I was falling in love. I was imagining a life together, etc, and then this song drops, and I'm imagining the break up, moving on, and dancing freely. lmao that was one weird week a year ago.

All that blood, she's definitely slaying something
She's to good to be compared to Uptown Funk or other bs in the charts. I actually appreciate that she isn't chart topping. Her aesthetics would die if she is a Top 40 artist. I love her and I think she's a masterwork of a woman, but I don't think she should be in the charts

I miss this era
writing this from the year 2145 and cant believe our android rulers emperor elon and empress grimes used to live in a world where trees were not holograms and food was still the human's leading source of sustenance. Salute.

there is 4 Grimes alter ego:
1)man
2)princess
3)fallen angel
4) cyberpunk rebellioner
that's NOT an FALLEN ANGEL...that's The Angel of Love Pissed off :)
@@stalkinu2 yea falk, nazis sind KOT :/
shes a fallen alien (fka twigs reference)
5) nimph

I believe the "angel" is named Ivy, and she was supposed to be the oldest of all the personas. One's a gamer-girl, she's the most modern and youngest. And the "princess" you're talking about is actually supposed to mimic Marie Antoinette. If I recall correctly, Claire (Grimes) actually stated the setting behind this was to go back in time and kill that Marie character. I'm assuming the other characters were incarnations of Ivy, but that's a guess. Interesting, none the less!
it sounds like a straight outta 2004 pop-rock

It’s almost like someone dared Grimes to make a perfect pop song and she did out of spite
❤
this wound stills so fresh... like the sound of this song
This girl is just amazingly talented.
For any Grimes fans who are watching this video. Claire (Grimes) wrote this song to Grimes. She became frustrated with the persona she created and they were on bad terms for awhile. They made up and this song is the end result. It's a beautiful depiction of how we all battle with our own ego at times.
+ohBTW really? for me it kinda looks like she wrote this song for her "fans" that criticized her when she released go
"You hate, you bite, you lose
After all, I just don't like you
It's nice that you say you like me
But only conditionally
Your voice, it had the perfect glow
It got lost when you gave it up though
Cause you want money
You want fame"
Feel like I’ve been cheated for 5 years of my life... how have I only just found this ?!?!?!
