Yeah this is by far my favorite version. This song makes me think of when I moved back with my mom when I admitted I was struggling with substances. I went from a full straight edge kid to a full blown user bc of trauma in my life. I’m Japanese. I love this song. Thank you for choosing Japan as your shooting location. I have been listening to this song for four years since high school. I love you forever. 愛しています♡ありがとう。
There's a Japanese philosophy called "Wabi-Sabi" the art of imperfection/incompletion Grimes stated this song is terrible and that it's not finished but this song is true reflection of Wabi Sabi because this sounds amazing.
It's funny how she has this long description of how this song is poorly recorded. It's great and if anything it gives a surreal live-ish sound to it which fits the theme.
She is a classic perfectionist (they are never happy with what they make-its part of the drive tho that keeps them going) . I know many musicians who are never happy with the sound they create. She reminds me of this dj/electronic musician friend I had who would create the most amazing beats but was NEVER happy with any of what he created. And his IQ was off the charts. Almost like they can be too smart for their own good.
@@soundpilatesandyoga8531 as a perfectionist artist (painter/tattoo artist) this is why we have the 75% rule in the creative world. We put out work that we're only about 75% happy with because otherwise we would just never release anything if we waited until we're 100% happy with a project. I'm pretty sure Grimes does this too because to the rest of us - myself included- literally everything she does is perfection!
I actually like this version better than the official album version! I actually like the chimes in the beginning in this version. The album version is just...idk it sounds TOO refined. Almost like she obsessed a little too hard over that one track.
@@soundpilatesandyoga8531 This is one of those qualities that can be good if you know how to control it (the same as like- being good with people- can be a great quality but can also be toxic.) The need to push until something is the best it can be typically produces good work. But at some point, you need to do a final polish and give it up. Some people never show perfectly good work because they never feel like it’s done and some people never even START projects because they are scared of running into this issue.
I love Grimes’ lyrical content. This song gives me vibes about uncertainty in getting older while hoping we still keep the same power of feeling and emotions we have when we’re young. Makes me sad when I realize deep down I wish I could do the things Claire does. I’m still young and just watching the time pass in front of me without experiencing the full power of those feelings we can still attain. Youth is joyful, there is a sorrow in seeing it pass.
That’s the wonderful and terrible thing about aging, you find you’re not as excited about things, but you’re also less unsure. You realize not everything requires a reaction but you also feel emotions less powerfully. It’s this odd trade off, of wanting to be the same person with drive and passion but wanting wisdom and maturity. Trying to not let that light die, that spark of youth. I have no advice, just try to live in and appreciate the joy, love and confusion of this time. One day you’ll wake up and realize most of your youth is behind you
I'm 45 years old and I feel Young when I heart it because reminds me the parties and raves, Bjork in the 90s, the life without worries and freedom when I was in my 20 that's why I luv her. Anyway I still enjoy as a young going to music gigs, lollapalooza, parties.
Like when someone says ''I hate this painting it's not good I did it in a few hours it sucks'' when in reality they spend like a week on it and it looks amazing. Just fishing for people to compliment it.
She talks about the mix and not about the composition. The mix is about the sound quality , while the composition IS the track. I think you people are mixing up these 2 things because there is absolutely nothing weird about what she wrote lol. Shes just saying the mix couldve been better and if you compare it to the realiti version released on album you can hear what shes means. Its about having the right equalizer frequencies and the right volumes of the individual sounds and a whole lot of complicated other things to get the best possible sound quality for your song.
I discovered her whilst waking up one morning in 2012 and seeing her Genesys video on my laptop. I was wondering how I had stumbled unto it. It was a bit scary in a surreal sort of way. Then I saw some of her other work. She is brilliant.
This is the song that I always go back to whenever I feel sad, so distanced by everyone, insecure, neglected. I can not accept who I am since I know that I exist. This mindset ruins my relationship with my family, my fiance, my friends. I feel like I have nothing to be proud of although I have so much things to be grateful for. I feel like I live in a limbo.
im sorry you feel that way. you're still here, alive and fighting and you should be proud of yourself and everything you've acomplished. and you'll acomplish much more. sending a big hug your way stranger
Hate that she sees this side of herself as just “making silly pop songs” when this is so much more meaningful to people than her going to mars could ever be. Art is liberation of the soul!!
@@guitaria66636 in my opinion, she publicly disavowed her old music to further her career; to become a "new" version of herself. The New York Times (which never printed a word about her earlier work), wrote in 2014 people should prepare for her "next album." In 2015 she put our Art Angels and suddenly everyone in media (who ignored her existence before) carried on as though her talent was only just discovered. www.nytimes.com/2014/09/14/magazine/why-everyone-should-be-waiting-for-grimess-next-album.html (Just my view, btw.)
We are our own WORST critics. She may look back on it and see one thing, a rushed project. But others may look on it and see something else... raw expression, vulnerability... perfection.
As a producer myself, she could be referring to the musical process and most likely the mixing process. Maybe it was difficult to perfect. Also maybe her tastes changed and/or she improved her skills as more of a commercial artist and producer. But yes, she nailed this song
Singapore locations i can tell from: 01:13 Garden by the bay 01:17 Har par villa 02:10 Marina bay sands 04:10 possibly the spiral staircase at Garden by the bay Welcome to Singapore Grimes!
I think it is good or more than ok but I bet she knew she has more interesting chord moves to offer. See Billie Eilish :) As this video lives through her personality it’s great :) The song structure has borrowed a lot from the 80ies and relies only on one pentatonic area.. she‘s more complex now but nothing to dislike on this piece.
They both have different personalities. They should both exist. The album version fit the tone of the album better. But this is a good B-Side. I think this version would have been a better addition then the REALiTi (demo) track that was on the album. That version wasn't really that different from the studio version, where as this version is different in tempo, and would have been a nice close to the album.
Surannhealz Surannhealz idk man i think album version should’ve nevrr exist when the demo came up everyone like it then album version released and we all like damn what have you done to the song so they decided to turn the song back to the demo and i still find demo version as the best
I'm a 60's, 70's, 80's classic rock type and I was surprised at how much I liked this. To be honest, I can't quite put my finger on why. I guess that's part of its charm. Glad I was able to hear it.
I'm into the same music as as you but I like her voice and style, especially this song. It just has a vibe of the 80s women singer's I guess. Maybe even non mainstream90s women singer's also
Every morning I play this song. It gets me through my depression, makes me feel strong and then Im ready to get through the day 🖤 thank you C for this masterpiece.
I love the crisp, vibrant and UltraViolet saturated color quality of this video. It's very refreshing psychologically. I really do feel like I'm living in the future.
"the kind of loud, slovenly, tuneful music you think no one will ever work a change on again until the next time it happens, whereupon you wonder why there isn't loads more." Robert Christgau
This is the hardest Grimes song to listen to and makes me cry much more than any other. In the verses it sounds like she is talking about someone from the past or, at the very least times in the past. Anyways, I think of my husband who passed away in 2019. Then, of course, she says, "I want to peer over the edge and see in death if we are always the same." 😢 The chorus to me is about being positive as much as you can about everything, taking your time and climbing the "mountains" of life. I say that because the song is fairly upbeat and not sad-sounding. This is not my favorite Grimes' song, though lyrically, it might mean more to me than all her other songs.
"its a bit of a mess" that i return to almost daily, most of my firends who don't listen to grimes love this track. its in my top 3 fave songs of all time
I found her music through Spotify, more specifically her album Artangels. I've always loved music, of all kinds, my soul has artistry and appreciation for it built in.. lol and when I found that album I was like; Wow. It's special. This song I'd guess has been the one I've played the most on that album but there's plenty of the other songs on it that are also masterful works. You can tell it's someone with a love for art who has created it, the passion and emotion is tangible 😌🫶🏻

When we were young, we used to live so close to it And we were scared and we were beautiful And when I peered over the edge and seen death, if we are always the same Oh, and I feel that nothing in life could ever be like this again 'Cause your love kept me alive and made me insane [Pre-chorus:] There were moments when it seemed okay (But I go back alone) To this moment away, where do you stay? Wish all her song were this "bad". It is my favorite of her songs by far! But only this version, the album version doesn't hold a candle to this one! This version is brilliant, and hauntingly beautiful! Thank you Grimes for putting out this "garbage"...more please!
@@tyhuff9576 I don't think it's bad at all. I just think this one is exceptionally good. Plus Grimes prides herself in being different and not like all the mainstream music. The album version, in my opinion, sounds more mainstream pop.
Five years later, day after day, I have become convinced Claire released this "unfinished song" as a genuine thank you to her long-time fans and as a historical reference point for all her future supporters down the line to recognize her last "original style" recording. Thank you, Claire.
I listen to this song at 2AM whilst I’m watching all the aeroplanes in the night sky. It’s hard to describe how it makes me feel, it’s like a melancholic and contemplative feeling. Kinda like a “wow life is a strange experience” type of feeling.
Both musk and her are disturbed. check my tweets on adonaiorion. I am a victim, proven and there are police reports. There are active investigations from DOJ and SEC on others, etc. These two pay gross amounts to cover the truth in their media promos. Gross evil vile people. Check my tweets, it's not a conspiracy, it's official SEC DOJ etc investigations, official news reports etc. They both pay a lot to cover the truth on their publicity; Jeffrey Epstein circle people; Musk sat in Trump admin all through out and reaped benefits, both have taken government funding while parading as rich, don't pay taxes, etc. Again that's besides the vileness, racism, etc.
this song was literally the catalyst that made me say "fuck it, im moving to seoul." and i did !!!! edit: wow i completely forgot i even commented this? and that people actually replied?? i just wanted to clarify that i was aware that most of the video isn't seoul. I recognized GD but I do want to clarify that I DID NOT move to seoul for kpop or anything of that nature. I was 20 at the time and I was really eager to get out of my comfort zone and I was curious about what life would be like if I moved to another country when the opportunity was being presented. At the time of my comment I was very lost in life, but I was saving money to travel. I was not sure where I wanted to go and I had some friends suggest Korea, as they were from Korea themselves. I was aware of the many problems Korean society has, and I was NOT expecting Korea to be this perfect country. I struggled a LOT the first year I lived in Korea. I had some of the lowest points in my life while living in Korea. But I have no regrets because the moment you are taken out of your sheltered environment, reality will quite literally slap you in the face at times. And sometimes reality will be beautiful. My point for writing my old comment is because this music video made me remember that sometimes, you just have to get out and face life on your own terms, because if you keep waiting for life to happen, you will miss it and it will be too late. Granted given the pandemic, I am no longer living in Korea. I am not sure what the future holds because I am currently focused on helping my family and like all of you, trying to survive the present. I do miss Korea a lot, but I am so thankful to be back at home with my family. I randomly have been listening to Grimes a lot these days and it's pretty surreal that I made this comment when the world was literally different and we did not take travelling or talking to others for granted. But this video still gives me the same hope that no matter how terrible things may look, there is quite literally a light at the end of the tunnel. I am so thankful I made the scary decision at 20 to move to a country by myself. It taught me a lot and I do not take that for granted. But I also want to say that you don't always need to take the extreme route like I did. You do not need to move across the world to further understand yourself, but it is art that moves us in such profound ways to perhaps help us at times in guiding us in the right direction, or just helping us be more confident in ourselves. I wish all a wonderful day, and may grace guide all of you as we try to navigate these uncertain times.
This song/video is so full of nostalgia and nightlife fancy. Grimes is a serious artist. Also I agree with the general consensus, this is infinitely better than the finished version.
Crying happy tears currently cause after a year of getting sober and finishing my second degree I booked myself and my best friend plane tickets and wristbands to EDC Vegas, feels amazing falling in love with life again and this song describes the feeling exactly ❤️✨
You should know that Grimes trolls journalists sometimes. She admitted that in an interview. I'm pretty sure she doesn't hate her own music. Otherwise she wouldn't even make it and release it.
when i first found this song i was battling a really bad drug addiction. this song made me feel inspired, and like there was hope for me to grow. it gave me feelings like i wanted to live and see the world and i never had that. today i’m now 3 years sober and i’ll never forget the feelings i used to get while listening to this song, it’s still so wonderful. thank you Grimes for inspiring me since i was 12 years old ❤️💗
You all don't realize how beautifully this song so perfectly captures the feeling of being lost in a metropolitan city in Asia as a foreigner. The energy, the vibe... the beauty of being whimsically at ease, wandering around aimlessly. She doesn't even realize how well the captured this feeling.
This is the best thing she has ever done, this sound encapsulates a sound, of a time, better than just about anything from the last decade. Im not the biggest fan of her musical direction currently but I'll always have Art Angels and prior which is good enough for me.
Her best song............hands down. She has lots of great tracks, but this is her best. WAY better than the album version...unfortunately. Honestly, this is probably my favorite song of the past decade. It's just perfect. Absolute perfect alternative pop ear candy.
@@avedic she did say that she didn’t like this version as much because it wasn’t mixed to what she felt sounded good. To me, it’s more of a work of an art than the final mix. The instrumentals have such magical clarity. I’m glad it’s on sale as “realiti demo” on iTunes as a single
i know.... ): in a moment of my life i was in the edge of suicide but one of my best friends in that time show me this song and video and told me ''look how she dances'' and change my life completly....
Ikr I was starting to become an alcoholic & getting onto heroin around when this song & album were released, and after having an intense trip on LSD & listening to this album during the “retrospective” part of the trip, I started trying to clean my life up & didn’t wanna be a fuck up. She’s such an amazing artist & person, I’m beyond happy I found her music.
I don't think she's a naturally talented dancer, what makes it so cool, is her carefree attitude. She's just like screw this I'm gonna go for it and have fun! At least that's my perception on this topic.
I love how this song is not finished and unpolished but it’s actually one of my favorite songs of hers. Maybe that’s what makes it feel so magical-because its raw
go-cubes are out of production now!!! i saw them in Grimes's "eat in a day" video and looked them up, and the company that made them stopped producing them bc they were a test product. @@pallasa she now gets these energy gems by beon :) (I wanted gocubes sssoooo bad too lol) they’re pretty good - not super intense energy but enough for a pick me up without having to drink an energy drink or coffee
i love how the beat sounds kinda like heartbeats and how the lyrics just blend perfectly with the sad/happy/nostalgic harmony she's created. pure genius. pretty much my go-to song for any day whether i'm feeling ecstatic, hopeful, or even like i can't go on anymore. thank you, grimes
Lovin your enthusiasm, saw one of Grimes videos last week and it was a serious masterpiece. If she keeps it up she'll blow up from the underground and smother the sell-out corporate pop-poop that is shoved down kids throats! YeHah! X
Gosh I remember the times when you were about to regret to release this great song and now the comments are available! This is a flipping masterpiece! It has something I can't explain, like the music of the future, like the music I hoped as a kid I'd be listening when I could get to adulthood, like the music I want to share with future generations, the music I want to hear in MARS! THANK YOU!
The sadness in the "unfinished" Realiti sets it apart and resonated with so many people. The album version was energetic and happy. I like this one better :)
Cause we aren’t perfect and we know it and want to listen to songs that aren’t perfect either but still are authentic and beautiful. There are too many overproduced songs touched by 100 of hands to polish the sound and make it sound too commercial. And when it’s done the magic and the soul of the person who originally wrote the song is gone.
I like it better myself. it's just more RAW, Also the video, it just brings Grimes down to Earth. It's more grounded, I don't know. But I have watched and listened to it over 50 times for sure.
Agreed! I have her full Discography but when I have my own personal Playlist of favorite songs to listen to, I had to RUclips to mp3 this version of it. It's just the right blend of ambience and beat that the studio version lacks.

This is how I felt about Unicornkid's music and videos lol. Ah, I miss Myspace. I'm old.
Because it is Grimes.
90s vibes, gives me hope.

As you get older your passion and emotions don't change, you're just more selective about what you're passionate about.
@@vicgeczi375 That’s good wisdom.
Couldn't have put it better myself.

My biggest regret in life is not discovering Grimes earlier.

Exactly!!!
She kinda suffers from the same issue as Gaga. She fails to understand what aspects of her art resonates with her fans.

Stephen Surry wdym
@@guitaria66636 in my opinion, she publicly disavowed her old music to further her career; to become a "new" version of herself.
The New York Times (which never printed a word about her earlier work), wrote in 2014 people should prepare for her "next album."
In 2015 she put our Art Angels and suddenly everyone in media (who ignored her existence before) carried on as though her talent was only just discovered.

We are our own WORST critics. She may look back on it and see one thing, a rushed project. But others may look on it and see something else... raw expression, vulnerability... perfection.
can we all agree that this song is an absolute MASTER PIECE and i strongly disagree with grimes for calling this song a mess
As a producer myself, she could be referring to the musical process and most likely the mixing process. Maybe it was difficult to perfect. Also maybe her tastes changed and/or she improved her skills as more of a commercial artist and producer. But yes, she nailed this song

This is the hardest Grimes song to listen to and makes me cry much more than any other. In the verses it sounds like she is talking about someone from the past or, at the very least times in the past. Anyways, I think of my husband who passed away in 2019. Then, of course, she says, "I want to peer over the edge and see in death if we are always the same." 😢
The chorus to me is about being positive as much as you can about everything, taking your time and climbing the "mountains" of life. I say that because the song is fairly upbeat and not sad-sounding.

I listen to this about once a year as a reminder that every once in awhile life can serve up some pretty incredible twists and turns and happy endings
this song was literally the catalyst that made me say "fuck it, im moving to seoul." and i did !!!!
edit: wow i completely forgot i even commented this? and that people actually replied?? i just wanted to clarify that i was aware that most of the video isn't seoul.

And when it’s done the magic and the soul of the person who originally wrote the song is gone.
This is without a doubt Grimes best song
Agree.
The demo is so much better than the album version
No
I like it better myself. it's just more RAW, Also the video, it just brings Grimes down to Earth.
Totally agreed!...👍

the demo makes me feel so happy and alive, so grateful this exists
I don’t understand why she became know as Elon musk girlfriend in the US before her music? I love her!! She’s an amazing artist and I’m mad I didn’t know of her til now.
because elon musk is literally changing the future of humanity
@@donnk lmao he wishes
She was known you guys just aren't cool :)
@@pigammon7843 dude shut up at least we know her now. it doesnt matter where we learned her from. yall always wanna act like youre in some elite grimes club
@@kat3ph0bic61 Not for nothing...but a long time Grimes fan--or 'aficionado' (c. 2009/2010 for me) wouldn't like her 2015 record. I hate that shit. I consider this "the last of the real Grimes." I listened to this 100s of times during my commute, chillin out and around, at home.
But I feel your 'displeasure' at the purity test bullshit.
It is a requirement. It's a reflex.
I am 'slightly sad' for listeners who learned of Grimes without hearing Visions in full or random cuts like Vanessa or FRDH BEFORE '15...
I am a singer/ songwriter from Nashville. I am just now getting introduced to your music. I love all of it. I love your videos. It makes me cry to witness such uninhibited, beautiful creativity. The stuff that dreams are made of but that too often never come true. Thank you for all that you do. May God continue to bless you and work through you. God bless you!
When we were young, we used to live so close to it
And we were scared and we were beautiful
And when I peered over the edge and seen death, if we are always the same
Oh, and I feel that nothing in life could ever be like this again
'Cause your love kept me alive and made me insane
There were moments when it seemed okay
(But I go back alone)
To this moment, oh where do you stay?
(I go back alone)
There was a time when the music would play
Oh oh oh
Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality
Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality
When we were young, we used to live so close to it
And we were scared and we were beautiful
And when I peered over the edge and seen death, if we are always the same
Oh oh, oh oh
There were moments when it seemed okay
(But I go back alone)
To this wall, oh where do you stay?
(I go back alone)
Oh oh, oh oh oh

Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see

I am the god of hell fire, and I bring you!
Fire
Thanks
Thank you so much for the lyrics! I need them so bad. Love this song!
This is a heresy. You're not supposed to post lyrics here wtf.
Even though she considered this unfinished and basically a lost work, it says a lot that she would put this out for fans. This version for me is fire, and the video captures her at the moment she was blowing up.
I like this a thousand times more than the album version, tbh .
I want this Grimes back 💯❤️🔥
This is the perfect song to listen to when depressed and on the edge.
I feel your pain dude. Keep fighting! I believe in you!😸
hey both of you, stay in it, someone will miss you :)
You need Jesus in ur life.
@@Jesus_is_saviorThis lady knows. Amen

Totally agreed 💯

agreed but i like the album version too
@@omenjesus1 me too
They’re both great 👍🏼
Man...this song brings me back. I went through my early 20's listening to Grimes. I remember back when her IG videos were of her in her little apartment during the time her first albums were coming out. Glad she made it big
Best version
Crazy to think I’ve been listening to this for almost 10 years
This only came out in 2015? When I first found this song I played this on loop for 4-5 times every morning. It is still one of my favorite Grimes songs. I just thought that it was much older. It is still incredible; there's something so soothing about it for me to this day.
came out in 2013
@@skittlefingerzzz okay that makes way more sense! I was like I swear I played this repeatedly when I was pregnant, which was 2013. but then I was thinking maybe I was crazy and had terrible memory.
damn comments are finally open 💝💝💝 this song is so beautiful
only just realised she opened the comments she giveth she can taketh
The camera angles and composition of the video are superb. Captures Grimes energy and also the vibe of locations in Asia. The song is very catchy and the electronic pop matches her dancing. Her hairstyles and fashion, music, drawings and lyrics make her very unique. She is like an alien elf with the voice of an angel - I hope her visit on earth is a long one.
Always remember your imperfections are what make you perfect
Congratulations on your pregnancy Claire. We love you spatially
BlackDwarf Obsidiane aww really??
Mrs. Funk yup with Elon’s kid
who the f you calling claire this is Grimes ...
who the f you calling claire this is Grimes ...
UnrecycleRubdish bruh her name is Claire, did you actually think that her parents named her grimes?
This version of the song will always be next level. One of my favorite songs of all time.
This song will most likely be her best song ever.
