a fun little Easter Egg: if you watch this with subtitles, whenever the Snovers talk about “Snow in the way” the S is capitalized, meaning that they were always talking about someone and not the snow itself. When Squirtle talks about snow, the S is lowercase. That was pretty clever.
Don’t forget, squirtle was the one who was picked by the trainer in episode 1. Between the trainer, then charmander, then squirtle, he never had any opportunity to learn how to be independent. It’s such an incredible continuity over the whole series that I refuse to believe this wasn’t Ship’s plan from the very start.
21:39 The way he said "we" instead of "you" shows that he acknowledges that he made mistakes by not taking responsibility for what happened in the past and letting everything go too far, but switching to "you" also means that he wants Abomasnow to see that he is responsible also for following his Gods, similar to how Squirtle thought he had to follow whoever orders him around.
Also since Turtwig said Squirtle was level 98 and pokemon need to level up to evolve when he evolved into wartortle he leveled up to level 99 so Squirtle/Wartortle will most likely be a level 100 blastoise in one of the next episodes.
Yeah but I think squrtle will head to the gods and asked them to go back in time to save charmander and bulbasaur and head to cerulean cave to meet mewtwo
Chimchar dying was supposed to be emotional scene but I just busted out laughing when he said "you can tell he's dead because he has x's over his eyes".
How has it been 2 years since the last episode? And the fact that now there’s only 2 left is exciting and mind boggling. My friend showed me this show when I was still in high school and I’m now in my 5th year of college and he’s about to have a kid. Time really does fly by. Look forward to coming back for what’s next.
Honestly if you have been watching since the beginning. It shouldn't be a surprise to you that it's been 2 years since the last episode. It's just the standard at this point
I guess that means we will have to wait till late 2023 or 2024 for the next episode unfortunately. But this one was epic, so the next one should be too.
My god.. to think that this series first began in 2014, and it has already been 10 years To put it into perspective, I was in PRIMARY SCHOOL (UK) when this started.. and now I have left college this year and currently in a full-time employment. WOW
This video told more about Squirtle than an anime arc. Seriously, Squirtle’s whole “stuck in the past” deal was inspiring. His breakthrough was incredible. The storytelling was amazing. Overall, Starter Squad is a fan-made masterpiece.
I recognized *immediately* that Squirtle was projecting his feelings about Charmander onto Chimchar, all because he referred to Chimchar as "Char", as in *Char*mander. Very clever!
So Charmander started off as selfish, he still was, but when Squirtle tried to teach him that force isn't what makes a leader, he tried to use empathy and redeem himself by trying to save Squirtle. Squirtle was always trying to follow the rules unless someone he viewed as an authority figure tried to make him break them, but by doing what he's told he loses the one guy who actually viewed him as an equal and gave up his free will to not feel guilty for what Caterpie made him do. Now that he looks back on his past and tries to hold himself accountable, he sort of embodied Charmanders initial desire to evolve and his belief that the rules Squirtle followed were not worth it when following them caused him suffering.
squirtle's story is actually really sad. how he completely obeyed the caterpie leader, how his only friends died (technically only charmander died but still), and how he kept clinging into the past is just so sad
In the last flashback, Caterpie shogun said that they lost everyone, implying that Bulbasaur is dead In the second flashback, Leonard said that the birds would burn the forest to the ground before they would lose (Note: this is not the first times pigeons and sparrows have been used to set civilizations on fire) Going back to the last flashback, it is very obvious that Viridian Forest is wiped clean off the map … Bulbasaur has a severe allergic reaction to fire
I'm calling it ahead of time Mewtwo or another Legendary pokemon like palkia or dialga will be able the top and they might reverse time to give squirtle another chance to save charmander. Because remember Mewtwo told Charmander to meet him at Cerulean cave and they never went so that's definitely gonna be brought up again.
Okay, prediction time: I genuinely don't think Charmander is permadead, he's been a main character since episode 1, and he still had character development left to go through. Plus there's the mess he made that Mewtwo is still trying to fix. To put it simply, Charmander has a lot of unfinished business. Given how Squirtle/Wartortle appears to be climbing Mt Coronet in this episode (Sinnoh Pokémon, really tall snowy mountain with Arceus supposedly at the top?), my guess is that Episode 11 is going to involve him confronting the gods and getting the chance to go back in time and change the past. After all, using time travel to change the past, including saving characters that were originally supposed to die, is absolutely a thing that can happen in the Pokémon world. I predict that Wartortle is going to be sent back to the past, save Charmander, and stop Caterpie's war before it starts.
I like how this episode gives greater meaning to the personality quirks of Charmander and Squirtle throughout the series, Charmander represented choice and free will in the series and even states to Catterpie that trainers and pokemon should stand next to each other, whereas Squirtle has represented freedom of consequence such as wanting to follow some sort of code of battle because he feels like he just should even when his friends are being beaten up and proven even further here where we see his willingness to listen to Catterpie's messed up orders, him snapping at the end was him finally accepting the consequences of his actions, it's why he gets mad at Snow for trying to hoist Chimchar's death on the gods.
20:55 This is one of the best moments in the series, perhaps the most emotional so far too. The realisation he/she had about Blue, the reality of it. He probably didn't even care what he/she would do to him, he just didn't want to take responsibility for his actions. And I don't think he even knew it till he got released...
Episode 1: Hehe, funny Starters are self conscious against their trainers Episode 10: Squirtle is depressed, Charmander’s head got cut off, and Bulbasaur is a masochist
I just realised how poetic this episode is, the 2nd team disbanded in the same way the first did, bulbasaur had left, charmander died in his mission of becoming the strongest and squirtle had stayed. The new team had squirtle stay and turtwig leave, and chimchar died trying to get strong by himself. Crazy how I didn't get that, but amazing series! I've been watching since the start of the series.
Loved it. I get the feeling Squirtle didn't want to evolve because he was hanging onto the past and a sense of helplessness. It's when he decided to take charge, accept the present, and take accountability that he decided to finally evolve. Can't wait til next episode!
I got that feeling too. Especially how he ripped his everyone off while saying “If I’m gonna make bad choices, they’re gonna be my own,”. Gonna be honest, that moment was badass
This series started as "Cute and kind of edgy adventures of the Kanto Starters" and now we are dealing with a war veteran going to "talk" directly to the gods, most likely in order to travel back in time and stop this mayhem
yeah and too be fair as shown in every pokemon game ever normal pokemon can literally beat gods in the pokemon world so squirtle fighting arcues, dialga, hoppa, geriti- man there a lot of god level beings in pokemon....
I like it when the graphics get better as time goes by, like in the flashback where Squirtle is fighting a bird the graphics are worse than in the scenes further in time. It's really a small detail but still a relatively good one!
"I dont know why I was laughing so much at the beginning. That story just had a bunch of death and a very sad ending". Turtwig speaking on behalf of the fans! Just brilliant. Kudos to the work you guys have put into it! The attention to details and a great story is what makes this epic.
Squirtle's backstory was nothing like we'd seen in the series, and yet was so well written! Being forced to Proceed as that Caterpie saw fit, even regarding evolution[though that may also have to do with not being like Charmander]... everything that happened after was incredibly well written.
What once to me was merely a "joke" or "parody", has now become one the most well-written stories I've ever paid witness to. Thank you for everything Shippidge and everyone else involved in making Starter Squad! :)
I love how the story goes from 0 to 1000! Like the show started from a simple comedy with a simple story to a fully fleshed out drama! 10/10, a studio needs to give you funding for this!
"You're just using me to relive your stupid childhood" Excuse me, CHILDHOOD??? They were CHILDREN??? God, that makes this whole story like 100 times darker.
The worst part is that alot of stuff makes sense, like the change in tone. They were kids, they were naïve and didn't see some of the stuff that happened as a big deal. Squirtle is now either an adult or in his very late teens. He has the maturity to understand just how fucked up the stuff he went through as a kid was. While I don't think it was 100% intentional, it does make the series pretty realistic when it comes to childhood trauma (at least my experience with it) It also makes sense why he would take care of chimchar and turtwig. They are kids. Kids who remind him of his childhood friends. He wants to relive his childhood, but not just that, he wants to relive it as the role of a guardian. As a way to protect those two in ways he couldn't protect charmander and bulbassaur. He is someone desperate for closure and the chance to make up for everything he did and was unable to do for them
@@theonlybrridge the best ending. All joking aside, he was most likely underground when all that war crap went down so hopefully he's still alive and just wandering around looking for a good place to eat berries and wear messed up mutilated corpses for hats.
12:09 I just realized this spearow was also a leader of his own clan like Caterpie is to theirs because of the bandana on his head. He was also on a revenge for the Fearow's death, the Fearow was probably his older brother or father.
I would die for any one of those Snover, they are literally the best and I couldn't love them any more than I already do. Also, the person who voice acted them did an amazing job, the voice was 90% of the entire appeal.
I feel kinda bad for Turtwig. I also really like Turtwig and hope he comes back. He didn't seem to mind following Squirtle around where ever when he thought they were friends, and then Squirtle forgot his name and called him Bulbasaur.
This story has become a masterpiece, the laughter, the fighting, the grief, there’s so much depth to the story. It’s unbelievable how good this is keep up the good work and see y’all in 2024 or something
@@numatruehome100 Yeah they were pretty supportive, except the first one with the train of thought about who is considered a "friend", it was kinda nonsense, even Turtwig has to question his logic.

@@well3669 wouldn't it be 2 years? Since right at the beginning it shows that moment when our dear friend. Charmander. Got slayed. So the war probably was in between those 2 years or at least a year.

I love how this series starts off innocent and gets progressively darker. I thought at least Bulbasaur would survive. I thought Whiskers would have a hopeful arc. Instead, everyone dies or leaves Squirtle. He went through an actual war. It went from Disney to Game of Thrones. I love it.
I just realized something: the timeskip is 10 years. Pokémon Red & Green released in Japan in February 1996 while Pokémon Diamond and Pearl released in Japan in September 2006. And this is the first time we’ve seen Pokémon outside of the original 151. And all of those Pokémon come from Gen IV
A remorseful Caterpie in the scene that the forest is almost destroyed. He's the one wearing things on his head, right? 😥 I suppose the others of his kind were fatally gone.
It’s amazing how squirtle’s want to be on a team and take orders was shown as early as episodes 5 and 7, and these flashbacks show us the extreme of what that extreme loyalty he wanted got him: the dangers of following orders blindly.
It does make sense though, for Squirtle's character. He was the one who tried to see things logically and tried his best to show Charmander his perspective and common sense, fearing the concequence of breaking these rules. I think I know what Squirtle was afraid of now: losing any form of stability and peace he's known, watching as inoccents die and the strong live. Yet it does show Charmander was also right too, seeing how things turned out the way they did. It makes me wonder if the war and everything else would've happened if Charmander wasn't so hell bent on strength and evolution.
@@facelessartandskills4924 basically that due to all of the trauma and forcing Squirtle to fight and train He had just turned into a mere doll,he doesn't even have any emotions anymore, she realized how much she damaged Squirtle mentally and let him go knowing that if she forced him to do more Fighting he would lose sense of life all together
I've literally been following this since the start of high school, I'm now at the final year of my uni degree, It's amazing how far this series has come
When Turtwig calls Squirtle out for calling him Bulbasaur and you realise he's been calling Chimchar 'Char' the whole time :(((( Edit: Char as in he's been referring to Charmander...
This is wrong because his name is chimCHAR it has CHAR in it Edit: I'm getting a lot of replys about telling me that I'm wrong and yes I know that. This comment was just meant for a joke
I think the obvious reason for Squirtle not wanting to evolve is cause Charmander wanted to evolve more than the rest of them. And Squirtle feels like he took that away from him when he got him killed.
That’s what squirtle would perceive. However I went back to rewatch all the episodes and in episode 9 he didn’t let Charmander finish his points of what he wanted. Charmander basically I’ll do anything….Squirtle assumed it was for evolution. When in truth: Charmander wanted Squirtle back more than anything. So I’m hoping we get some resolution towards Squirtle and Charmander understanding each other more before Wartotle disappears. Either way it’s going to be interesting.
"A true friend doesn't care if he's actually your friend. Some of my closest friends in the world have been my greatest enemies, and I never even talk to them." Best advice ever.
That scene with distraught Caterpie asking an emotionless Squirtle what to do was actually really powerful. Also I wonder what happened to Whiskers. Pretty clear she tried to fight Bluey but still.
@@ilovedragonball2435 Likely either killed by the birds or killed by Squirtle for trying to desert. There's a small chance, however, that she might have escaped in the confusion of warfare somehow. Caterpie mentioned that he had a "stone", which relative to a Nidorina can only allude to a moon stone. Sounds like Chekhov's Gun to me, so with potential time shenanigans coming up, we may see a post-war Nidoqueen Whiskers in the coming episodes.
Holy crap. I guess, in the end, Caterpie become the monster he strove to fight against. And Squirtle really needs to see a therapist. Shippidge never fails to deliver on quality episodes. I can’t wait to see where the next one goes.
This series went from haha, cute Pokémon cursing, to a really deep, serious, compelling, emotional roller coaster while still maintaining comedy that doesn’t feel forced. I don’t know how the heck you did it, but please keep doing it.
It went from an action packed series to a boring episode that is hard to watch. These tree guys are just annoying. Charmander, the main character died, squirtle turning into a kind of god? Does this feel like startersquad? They ditched everything iconic, nothing is like Part 9 anymore. Tell me 1 thing that stays? Just do you remember, squirtle is now evolved. Everything is different.
@@GurkenbauerTim if the main character dies how is he the main character and i don't mind the change of chimchar and turtwig because i don't think we saw much of them so i cant be too quick to judge so i don't see it as bad but just bland
13:24 - "I knew you weren't ready for the stone. What a shame." Nidorina can only evolve into Nidoqueen when exposed to a Moon Stone. I love the implications of that line. Especially when you remember that Leonard isn't just a random Caterpie. He's the one who was struggling with training in Episode 7. Whiskers believed in him then, and she couldn't kill him now. God, the detail in the writing and animation has come along so well. Amazing job to everyone involved!
The amount of thought put into the writing makes me really curious what will happen with the Missingno plotline, because I don’t think they’d just forget about it after so much buildup; not when so much thought and effort is put into the story.
Moon has connotations of darkness and so evil, because it appears at night, showing that Nidorina is still good and isn’t ready to throw that away for the evil and destruction her “family” wrought.
@@chandrus8015 He said that pokemon trainers are slave owners, and that individuality is key. I thought the story thus far was leading us to believe that Charmander was wrong, but in the end, he was correct.
@@crystalcat1002 To be fair, while his philosophy was sound, he had a _very_ violent and authoritarian way of spreading it. Heck, his actions lead to the Caterpie war in the first place. Squirtle has now basically adopted the philosophy, but without the violent temperament. It's a cool middle ground that came from a lot of well done character writing.
squirtle’s character development was top tier. the moment he wanted to replace his lost friends to accepting his evolution was really nice. still sad about charmander’s death
Then there is bulbasaur. Who will probably come back with some michaelangelo last rodin plot twist and find squirtle. Then something about charmander with the gods. Or just find his body and his head and use a revive, lol
Dude, when the first episode of this came out, I was so young. I still love starter squad, and I cannot contain myself till the next episode(s) I feel such nostalgia, and even tears come to my eyes when thinking about this.
Reminds me of the film Psycho. It did the exact same story telling technique, but this was far bolder because it didn't just replace Charmander as a protagonist. Wish it started off like this though.
i think a cool detail going over people's heads is that squirtle is calling him char instead of chimchar due to his imagining of turtwig and chimchar being the og squad.

Caterpie realized Squirtle feared himself, cause he feared himself figuring out that he killed Charmander and it was his fault. That’s why Caterpie pities Squirtle’s next trainer as well - Squirtle will use him as a cudgel to escape his accountability!!
Actually they made a offical game where you can play as a Pokémon (any starter from generations 1-4 plus Pikachu) and explore a world covered in darkness with a grim future. You eventually time travel to a dark dystopian future where nobody is happy. You try to save the world but are hunted by some evil Pokémon that want to kill you. Let's just say the game doesn't avoid the subject of death at all. It is actually a major plot point. Like the end of this episode, you go to try and take on the Pokémon gods to save the world and everyone in it. The game is a spin off developed by a different company than gamefreak, Chunsoft, and it is a ds game called Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky. It is my favorite Pokémon game to this day because it isn't afraid to explore darker themes like the meaning of life and reality of death. It is still appropriate for kids I guess but the plot definitely is not targeted at kids at all. The gameplay is probably why is isn't as popular because it is a strategy, turn based Dungeon crawler but has a lot of elements from regular Pokémon battles like attacks, stats, abilities, hp, pp, levels, pokemon evolution, and even has some of the same items from the mainline games. I personally like the gameplay but some Pokémon fans don't like how different it is. I personally would recommend that anyone who likes Pokémon and more plot focused games, should try Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky.
This is was one of the best things I’ve seen in RUclips, I can tell you put a lot of passion and effort into your storytelling. I never would’ve expected charmander to actually be dead, and the flashbacks of the caterpie war, seeing squirtle just accept his life as a soldier, and seeing him following a NEW hotheaded individual, finally let himself evolve, all of it, was amazing to say the least, and I’m super excited to see more of what you have in store, no matter how long it takes :)
I feel like squirtle originally got the everstone for the reason he claimed, to get better moves. However, it slowly reminded him about charmander, and how he always wanted to evolve. He kept it on as a sign of respect, but still says it’s for better moves.
“He who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself; and if you gaze too long into the abyss, the abyss will gaze into you.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
The guardian Snow is unironically one of the coolest things I have ever seen, you did an amazing job bringing him to life (and then blowing him to smithereens)
How did I not notice that the Caterpie Leader was wearing Charmander's head during the flashbacks? Must have really hurt for Squirtle to look at them, knowing that it was his own fault that Caterpie decided to kill Charmander instead of putting him away in a pokeball forever. Squirtle really changed after learning that his choices should be his own and not for anybody else, him turning into Wartortle was the best thing I've seen.
@Izuku Midoriya Because that's good story telling. Every single thing from the first episode all the the way up to when he died was building up to that one moment and it was fucking perfection.

I have loved watching this series evolve from pokemon spoofs to a genuine action cartoon with a very well written story about trauma and holding onto the past. I absolutely didn't expect it, buy I now embrace it fully, and I'm SO hype to see where it goes from here. Absolutely amazing stuff dudes.
Although the series has developed over the years to be a more serialized drama, I'm glad that it still has some elements of a cartoon comedy in it, like with the x-eyes and the dialogue between the Snovers. They were the highlight for me in this episode.
I was playing Pokémon Sword when the Alolan Ninetales dex entry reminded me of this episode. The entry I'm referring to is this one: "A deity resides in the snowy mountains where this Pokémon lives. In ancient times, it was worshiped as that deity's incarnation." Differently from other dex entries, this one doesn't say "Legends say that a deity resides[...]" It just flat-out says that there is a deity up the mountain. I wonder if this is intentional or just a coincidence. It seems too specific to be intentional, but if it is I'mma go insane.
a fun little Easter Egg:
if you watch this with subtitles, whenever the Snovers talk about “Snow in the way” the S is capitalized, meaning that they were always talking about someone and not the snow itself. When Squirtle talks about snow, the S is lowercase. That was pretty clever.
Thats full on subtitle foreshadowing. soo cool

And Squirtle is now a god
I still hate the fact that charmander died

squirtle's story is actually really sad. how he completely obeyed the caterpie leader, how his only friends died (technically only charmander died but still), and how he kept clinging into the past is just so sad
In the last flashback, Caterpie shogun said that they lost everyone, implying that Bulbasaur is dead
In the second flashback, Leonard said that the birds would burn the forest to the ground before they would lose (Note: this is not the first times pigeons and sparrows have been used to set civilizations on fire)
Going back to the last flashback, it is very obvious that Viridian Forest is wiped clean off the map

Okay, prediction time:
I genuinely don't think Charmander is permadead, he's been a main character since episode 1, and he still had character development left to go through.
I love it lots dude
I was going to say bold ass move killing Charmander let's see where this goes in the next few years

I mean, it could be Dialga (Time Pokemon) or Palkia (maybe another space where everything works out)... pinkish glow might signify something, tho.
excellent theory

It actually took 10 years to make the 10th episode
I just realised how poetic this episode is, the 2nd team disbanded in the same way the first did, bulbasaur had left, charmander died in his mission of becoming the strongest and squirtle had stayed. The new team had squirtle stay and turtwig leave, and chimchar died trying to get strong by himself. Crazy how I didn't get that, but amazing series! I've been watching since the start of the series.

He wants to relive his childhood, but not just that, he wants to relive it as the role of a guardian. As a way to protect those two in ways he couldn't protect charmander and bulbassaur. A true fool, he created a mindless soldier to do his bidding and destroy all in his path, and then begged the same shell of a person for advice, his rage blinded him for years, he thought he wanted to lay waste to this land, but in the end.. he realized that wasn’t what he wanted, long after it had already been too late
Oh my God, they actually killed off who is debatably the main character.

That's how they make revenge good in animes

Caterpie realized Squirtle feared himself, cause he feared himself figuring out that he killed Charmander and it was his fault. That’s why Caterpie pities Squirtle’s next trainer as well - Squirtle will use him as a cudgel to escape his accountability!!
That's depressing, but pretty accurate otherwise
I love how the caterpie saw charmander as an uncontrollable tyrant while the leader became what he wanted to destroyed
Yes
To be destroyed*
But yeah I agree. It makes the story better.
Ironic isn't it?
That Charmander was pure evil
i like how it atarted in gen 1, but then 10 years later, it was in gen 4, the accurate time and dates
This entire story legit FEELS like a story pokemon would make (if they were less of a kid friendly company)
And if they actually made the pokedex entries literal

He kept it on as a sign of respect, but still says it’s for better moves.
once you get to level 98 you've gone past the point of better movesets.
There are actually good moves that can only be obtained in early stages like water pulse and such
@@zaccyfn yea but nobody gets any new moves at level 98. Let alone a prevolve
@@GamingWithCalvin1 yeah i think lvl 98 it’s just part of the plot. Level 99 wartortle then level 100 to Blastoise

Yep that sound just about right

Poor sleep-deprived Mewtwo is literally the only one holding back Missingno and the endless glitch corruption.

A lvl 60 fully evolved? powered by gods vs a lvl 99 warturtle, a close fight
Wasn't that a Abomansnow ?
How did I not notice that the Caterpie Leader was wearing Charmander's head during the flashbacks? Must have really hurt for Squirtle to look at them, knowing that it was his own fault that Caterpie decided to kill Charmander instead of putting him away in a pokeball forever.
Squirtle really changed after learning that his choices should be his own and not for anybody else, him turning into Wartortle was the best thing I've seen.
@Izuku Midoriya Because that's good story telling. Every single thing from the first episode all the the way up to when he died was building up to that one moment and it was fucking perfection.

It was a misdirect. The whole time we thought the story was about Charmander’s journey, but it was really about Squirtle’s journey to stand up for himself and be his own mon. We see for the first time him really truly doing something that isn’t for someone else (charmander, his trainer, caterpie, etc.) Everything that’s happened since episode one has culminated right here. Unreal and fantastic work! Next two Eps are gonna be GAS 🔥

Definitely the most ironic way Charmander could go out .
Gotta admit…if Caterpie put the Charmander “hat” on the proper way it would look good on him. It looks odd when he wears it backwards though but I guess it was for the surprise reveal
The entry I'm referring to is this one:
"A deity resides in the snowy mountains where this Pokémon lives. In ancient times, it was worshiped as that deity's incarnation."
Differently from other dex entries, this one doesn't say "Legends say that a deity resides[...]" It just flat-out says that there is a deity up the mountain. I wonder if this is intentional or just a coincidence. It seems too specific to be intentional, but if it is I'mma go insane.
