Hey mate, mechanic by trade and i've been wanting to learn how to prep and paint, and this has to be the most informative and clear example of what to do. Thanks alot and keep up the great work.
Good idea, like the video. One way that I teach this in my videos is to patch the holes with a piece of tin and solder. There is absolutely no chance of warping the panel like mig welding and it's a permanent water proof patch. I've been doing this type of repair for about 30 years and never had a fail.
Sand as much as you can on the inside if possible. Scratch it enough for job weld to stick. Add jb weld but make sure it’s for the right material. Sand it and if it still doesn’t look flat I use bondo. This worked for my hatchback rear door holes.
For small holes in hollow metal panels You can use a foam fun and shoot some foam in the holes, then after it has expanded dog a little out, then fill with Bondo. I like drilling it fresh with the step drill bit!
Thank you so much for this video. I filled the extra holes in my golf cart that used to have plastic pins in them. I got Por15 on my arm and hand somehow and it’s still on me. Lol. But now I can fix the rust on my truck. I haven’t done body work since 1991.
Serious question: what's the time line for a project like this? It takes time for this stuff to dry & then more time for the next steps that require drying..
Well this was a HUGE help! I took a carriage top off of a Lincoln Town Car, in the ugliest so-called City in the southern part of the states- Orlando, Florida. I'm originally from the good parts of Chicago! Florida has wonderful places, but Orlando is a LIE in it's advertising. it's a failed boomtown that was originally designed to be a resort City for children! Back to the topic.....Using your method, the car came out wonderful. So, All that beautiful work for that ugly wing?? Well I guess I would put anything on a car too as long as I get paid for it. I'm a do It yourself guy. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING AND SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE!! Blessings.
If I want the outline of the hole to never ever show up for the life of the vehicle due to weathering and temperature changes, which method is best, this way, welding, another way?
tip of the day :D .. if going north south north south lines with the 120 .. then go west east west east with the 240 :) removes more groves in the paint/metal
I will go out on a limb and say if you can’t access the other side maybe a water tight spray foam in the hole. The foam will expand out the hole.. cut it flush with a razor after it drys then apply the filler on top.
An easier solution would be to solder a patch. This can be done without access to the back side. I've covered this in some of my videos that I've posted.
Hi! Nice video! I have a rear hatch liftgate body panel made of fiberglass ( I think... I know it is not metal ) . It is from a Chevrolet Spark 2016 , There is extremely tiny holes left by removing bowtie badge, holes are in a vertical position.... What I need to prep this body part made from fiberglass ( I think )? I have the keyhole to fill also..
Hi Lucas. I thought I was crazy for using spray insulation for filler, then I found your site. My truck’s 10 years old but runs fantastic, body shop would have been thousands....thanx again.
wow didint know por15 was that good , its bloody expensive so i assumed it was , but still . iam obliviating rust under my car and painting it with it , super glad to hear its a great product that will last
I have a diy repair to my scratched bumper underway but i have filled 4 areas of one corner treating each area of deep scratches separately, so i now have 4 primer patches ready to base coat using rattle cans. Looking at this video do you thing i should of primed the whole corner, covering all primed filled patches or can i still achieve a good job separately? Thanks
Great Tip for filling a hole on a budget! I haven't used POR 15 in years but that stuff dries rock hard and never comes off. I am redoing my old Plymouth and am already losing money on it because the parts are so ridiculously high priced (if i can find it). I got a used hood in good shape but the trim piece down the center is missing. I don't want to pay $200 or more for a NOS trim piece, not interested in taking the hood to a welder because it will never be a show car no matter how nice the final paint job will be.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. My truck has tow mirrors that are bolted into the door and I wanna swap them with tow mirrors that go where mirrors normally go and I was wondering how I was gonna fill those holes the old mirrors are gonna leave behind
Will this work on larger holes. Say a baseball size hole. I have to emergency lights in a tailgate I need to remove and patch. I would appreciate any useful methods
James Williams wouldn’t be flat enough. Remember, you’d be adding material to the surface. So itll have a hump no matter how much you sand. This way, the body filler settles into the hole, and when sanded, is flush with the surface.
I understand what you're trying to teach here. Migs are not always easy to come by or easy to master quickly but why not use resin then paint on your fiberglass backing? It seems like you end up with plugs instead of patches this way. Plugs being easier to knock out by accident. Just wondering. Keep up the good work.
I’ll start by saying I’m not an expert but I would want at least 80 grit for a stronger bond. The filler mechanically bonds so I would want deeper grooves. It would make me nervous over time the bondo would let go.
Curious to know if this job held up. Ive researched how to plug spoiler holes. People say you have to weld and it wont hold up with just bondo, but ive seen no evidence of this
Yo nice work, but wha is the song at 11:32 ? Why you did not put that in the description ? You taught nobody was enterested in real music ? Pls title ^.^
Awesome! Im actually just about to fill some small rust holes in my 72' Datsun so this was exactly what I needed. One question though, is one layer of fiberglass enough or did you use multiple? Cheers
I'm kinda flipping between who is better, Dave or Gunman? it's hard to tell... they are both really skilled and it would be nice to see them do some really artistic work together.... I call for a calab between them, maybe a battle of who's better or artistic skills... I hear Gunman is welcome to the idea, the only thing is, he's in Perth
customspraymods Hi there. Do you have a video of how to repair rust from the outside of the vehicle using fibreglass and rust preventative paint. Thanks
Your a damn grin man driving a little kids car. You should be driving a truck like a man. Thanks for not being a sissy and putting on those stupid rubber gloves like I see in so many videos. Job looks great

What if the hole is blind and you can't get at the back?

One of the wholes I just couldn’t get to so I just put a vinyl wrap over it haha😂😂 it’s an old comment but hopefully it helps someone
Can you update your link to all the products in video in the description? I clicked it and it said "404 Not Found"

I have the same car that I’m attempting to put a gt wing, this was a great guide
how about if no access to the other side(inner side)
Probs a bit of spray foam

If I want the outline of the hole to never ever show up for the life of the vehicle due to weathering and temperature changes, which method is best, this way, welding, another way?
Your channel is growing fast, can't wait until you reach 200k
yeah its good to see think the mazda eunos video bought me here like 4 or 5 years ago, that seedy mustachio made me subscribe lol
TheAussieMonster 2 ahhaha, the moustache, that was awesome
yet again another great video with a fix designed at diy not fabricators
I thought you might be going for a spoiler delete. Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm Hispanic and I enjoy dancing like that too sometimes. Skills.
I know this it's been years since this video came out but I wanted to know why did you leave three holes on each side ?
Hello because they will be covered by the new wing.
tip of the day :D .. if going north south north south lines with the 120 .. then go west east west east with the 240 :) removes more groves in the paint/metal
Great video!!…this was what I was looking for!
what if you can't access the holes in the back to put the fiber?

Auto Body Training Solutions what’s solder mean
Andrea Pugh soldering is taking a strand of metal and applying a solder gun (an extremely hot rod) it is a form of welding almost
@Blasphemous Hole repair without welding

I’m trying to put sti wing on this exact wrx Thanks a lot
wow didint know por15 was that good , its bloody expensive so i assumed it was , but still . iam obliviating rust under my car and painting it with it , super glad to hear its a great product that will last
Christmas Tree drill bit 😂😂😂that is step drill bit LOL
Aka, Christmas tree drill bit.
Where do you get those fiber glass pieces?
I have a diy repair to my scratched bumper underway but i have filled 4 areas of one corner treating each area of deep scratches separately, so i now have 4 primer patches ready to base coat using rattle cans. Looking at this video do you thing i should of primed the whole corner, covering all primed filled patches or can i still achieve a good job separately? Thanks
Does it have to be Por 15? Is there cheaper rust prevent paint I can’t use?
Great Tip for filling a hole on a budget! I haven't used POR 15 in years but that stuff dries rock hard and never comes off. I am redoing my old Plymouth and am already losing money on it because the parts are so ridiculously high priced (if i can find it). How much does it cost per panel with 10 holes about 10mm in size?
Wow looks amazing, where do you live? Am taking to you my Genesis Coupe.
Couldn't you apply the patch from the other side of the boot and sand it flat or would that not be flat enough?
James Williams wouldn’t be flat enough. Remember, you’d be adding material to the surface. So itll have a hump no matter how much you sand. This way, the body filler settles into the hole, and when sanded, is flush with the surface.
Great tips and techniques! Im new to learning about bodywork and am practicing on my car. Lots of good information here. Thanks alot
This will work for bullet holes right?
it should
What did you put over the fiberglass patch I'm confused. Don't you just use fiberglass resin with the patch?
oh man this is so easy. So all I need to do...is open my own body work shop lol.... Awesome work though
Excellent workmanship, Perfect paint 👍👌👌
Good quality job man 👍💪001-REX sheeeeeeshhhh
Sheeeeeesh
How did you exactly match the paint on that car?
Good job ! I’m assuming thats for looks cause the fin not going to make his car Aerodynamically faster or drive better.
how many coats of that world Rally blue did you sprayed?
Can i use regular hardener to patch a hole with a fiberglass??
I understand what you're trying to teach here. Migs are not always easy to come by or easy to master quickly but why not use resin then paint on your fiberglass backing? It seems like you end up with plugs instead of patches this way. Plugs being easier to knock out by accident. Just wondering. Keep up the good work.
Lee Sanders this paint is stronger then resin and very flexible it's also easier and it protecrs against rust. Thanks man.
Another excellent video. The last time you put a bigger wang on a wrx, there was donuts. This video needs more donuts.
I’ll start by saying I’m not an expert but I would want at least 80 grit for a stronger bond. The filler mechanically bonds so I would want deeper grooves. It would make me nervous over time the bondo would let go.
U got carried away there dancing 🤣
But how do you repair a hole in the wing without removing it?
Incredible work, I liked everything. Nice one
RaptorArk thanks
Any suggestions for a weld through primer?
If you can't get to the back just use fiberglass filler. then regular filler on top of the fiber glass filler.
How much would this cost?
turned out great
great work, great video - very helpful thank you !
There is no way I would trust myself sanding without tape lol
WHATS THAT FILLERS NAME PLEASE.....CANT CONNECT TO LINK
Awesome video! Thanks so much!
Curious to know if this job held up. Ive researched how to plug spoiler holes. People say you have to weld and it wont hold up with just bondo, but ive seen no evidence of this
CpnStbn12 check out the date this video was uploaded. Since then it is still holding up as it should. There is not one sign of the holes.
Like always, you are the best!
I love your videos, thanks for your time
Yo nice work, but wha is the song at 11:32 ? Why you did not put that in the description ? You taught nobody was enterested in real music ? Pls title ^.^
What paint gun and tip?
AWEsome!!.. Thanks bro, keep up the good work!!
Did you color sand pint if so any advice Thanks
Hey no didn’t sand this. I’ll only sand the clear if there are defects like dust.
did you have to paint the whole trunk lid? or is there a method where you just paint the affected area?
juck huo best paint the whole boot otherwise you will see a line of clear
what if your using 2k with clear paint mix?
Great video and awesome wing!
Christmas tree drill bit 🤣
Colour match looks good
Hey mate do you think it would be fine to use this method to patch up holes in a van floor?
thebosswogg yes for sure.
I don't agree what about underneath where you put the glass just a cobble messs that won't last.
Can you do it from the top?
this a great video. definatly gonna try this
Thank you for the information!
Very helpful video. Thank you
hahaha Courtney the car looks great, great video too!!
Good one nut story great work dave
hey man awesome videos . just subscribed, you should do a bumper hole repair video that would be nice
Awesome! Im actually just about to fill some small rust holes in my 72' Datsun so this was exactly what I needed. One question though, is one layer of fiberglass enough or did you use multiple? Cheers
sandlez12 I used 2 Layers. Better to use two
Your veins are insane
not the way i would've done it but hey it turned out very nice....
That body filler is possibly going to shrink and sink?
I'm kinda flipping between who is better, Dave or Gunman? it's hard to tell... they are both really skilled and it would be nice to see them do some really artistic work together....
I call for a calab between them, maybe a battle of who's better or artistic skills...
I hear Gunman is welcome to the idea, the only thing is, he's in Perth
amazing!
Good job on the paint ,but you should have of used fiber glass resin instead of that Por 15.
pitlion1 this stuff is better then resin and easier to use.
"Dont have to look pretty, just have to fill the holes", thats what she said.
how would I go about doing this if its in the rocker panel where the sideskirts came off?
Christmas tree drill😂
very nice 👍
Yea that took forever 😬looks like ima keep this old wingy
@customspraymods ima move to Australia just so you can show me everything you know lol
who ever buys this car after you will be laughin with all the mods you have done
Blade cage It's not his car.
best compliments
Lol. What about bullet holes?
🤔
stay out of the hood
Title should be, "How to do a Half-Assed Repair that Might Look Good for a Few Months Before Falling Apart"
I’m just going to buy a new trunk lol
Filler primer looks way undercut, can see the lines through base D:
Thomas Wegielnik ha. You must have the new x-ray glass on your screen.
Sorry I meant the primer. Is there a reason why you didn't feather it out more? Just curious
customspraymods Hi there. Do you have a video of how to repair rust from the outside of the vehicle using fibreglass and rust preventative paint. Thanks
Sorry x-ray mode was on..
lol that hard tape line will come back home slice. you're painting entire top no blend....why!!
Kenneth Terry the paint was blended not the primer.
customspraymods I understand. I am a ppg certified painter for ford motor co. tape lines are a peeve of mine
Your a damn grin man driving a little kids car. You should be driving a truck like a man. Thanks for not being a sissy and putting on those stupid rubber gloves like I see in so many videos. Job looks great
Lmaooooo
uhhh that dent in the door on the right side :(
