People focus too much on scoring depth, but pay little attention to detail on defense depth of the forwards. Janmark, Derek Ryan, Carrick, Perry, McLeod, Foegele and Holloway have all busted their asses. They've drawn penalties, winning puck battles in their own zone, backchecking at key moments etc etc. Even McLeods line have completely shut down Byfield's line. Byfield couldn't sniff an inch of a scoring chance. McLeod's line were just all over him all series

Nice to have those guys on bargain contracts too.. foegele is expensive but hitting 20g this year justifies the cap hit. Sucks that oilers always end up overpaying guys, and all the puck battles and good defensive plays a player makes get overlooked because he isn't scoring every night

Oilers have been on the progression that teams that typically win a cup go through first before breaking through. It’s why folks should NEVER use regular season results to support how they think a series will go. I think the Oilers are almost certain to make it to the WCF’s as I don’t see the Nucks or Preds beating them in a series. Avs will have a tougher matchup in round two with either Dallas or Vegas as both of those teams are also seasoned playoff perennials.

Watching the game last night I said to my partner that it was the best defense I've seen from the Oilers by far. The third period was just shutting down everything the Kings tried to do. Mid game there was just this four minute chunk where no whistles were blown and the Kings kept moving the puck up only for the Oilers to throw it back down the ice. Just NOTHING was happening.
I'm still skeptical though. I'm waiting for the glass cannon to come out and shatter buuuuuut prove me wrong Oilers.

I feel like the whole team, Beyond just MdC and Leo, have stepped up. We're getting good efforts from everyone and it is showing as well as being rewarded. Been an Oilers fan for decades & living in Edmonton I know the feeling of that disappointment when things fail and end but this season has felt different and I am here for it. Regardless of how they finish this year's team has a lot to be proud of and if they keep growing like they have it is just a matter of time until the Cup is theirs. IMO.

I thought Mattias Janmark was remarkably sharp on the penalty kill and handled the puck well on that fourth line. He even chipped in a few assists.

it definitely feels like the best we've been in recent years heading into round 2. I still have my doubts about whether we can compete with the likes of Vegas, Avs, or even Florida over a 7 game series. but having guys like Hyman, Holloway, Vinny etc. and especially Stu stepping up massively can only be a good thing. 💙🧡

I love the improvements Vinny made this year. He used to be a liability last year but now he’s using his size to his advantage and is more or less a very solid defensive defenceman. Of course he’s going to have plays where he’s will get cooked but that’s the playoffs and hes a good reliable defender. I am so happy for him and the leaps that he has taken in his game

  • @AlexTheOilersFan

Edmonton put on a CLINIC yesterday in the 3rd period, defending that 4-2 lead. Until LA made it 4-3. the only thing they could do was dump the puck into Edmonton's zone or try to skate it in, which resulted in Edmonton engaging in a puck battle, winning said puck battle, and then sending it out of their zone. 15 minutes into the 3rd period, LA only had 3 shots on net. At one point, their players were blocking their own shots and not Edmonton.
Edmonton showed that defensive game they utilitzed during the 16-game win streak, and it's no surprise they came out of LA only allowing 1 goal against in 2 games. It was a well executed plan. Do I think they still win it? No. But they showed that if they play like that, they have a shot. And that's all they need to make magic happen

One difference I noticed this year from last year is that McDavid isn't killing himself to turn out a win. He's almost coasting and just making things happen effortlessly it seems. In the past two playoff runs, it seemed like he had more weight on his shoulders, more pressure, etc so he went balls to the walls and battled extra hard. This time he's more relaxed and just doing his thing, being efficient, staying calm and being the leader the Oilers need him to be. He will need to turn it up a notch next round though!

I've been following the Oilers since the Gretzky era; just an avid hockey fan keeping tabs. Ever since M. Ekholm donned an Oilers jersey, I've been impressed with his assimilation into Edmonton's scheme. To me, he's a blue-line stud. Final note: ultimately, the Oilers will only go as far as their goal tending takes them, and Skinner makes me nervous. Extremely.
