    I'm just getting back into machine sewing as a somety-something, having done a bit of sewing as a kid and as a teenager. I bought my machine a few years ago, but have only recently gotten into using it. It's a modern Singer - not a super-expensive model - and when sewing the widest zig-zag stitch (in the program - it's computerised) it is skipping stitches and getting jammed up. So I figured it needs some adjustment. I'm an engineer and an avid-DIYer, so I knew when it came time to service or adjust the machine I'd be watching YT videos to learn how to do it. I had this idea from my childhood use of my mom's machine (and other things I read) that sewing machine timing was something super-complicated that needed a PhD borrowed from the Hadron Collider to fix. But in fact it's all really quite simple. Just look how this chap has fixed his lovely spouse's secondhand machine in a matter of minutes.
    I've also got an issue where the machine works well with standard thickness thread, but when I use a 40 weight thread I start getting mayhem down below in the bobbin department. No euphemism intended. From what I've watched this evening I think it's a problem with the clearance between the hook and needle or the clearance between the shuttle-driver and the hook component.
    Yesterday I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on, but today I've discovered that with a little learning and patience I can identify problems with my sewing machine and fix them myself.
    If you're reading this and wondering if you have what it takes to adjust/service your own machine: well, if you are able to sew garments or other projects, you definitely have the skills to fix your own machine without taking it to a repair shop. All you need are some basic tools and the patience to find/watch the right YT videos. Like this one! Thanks guys for this tutorial, and it's great to see a vintage machine saved from the dump and returned to active service.

    Awesome. Fixed the wife's Futura since it was doing the same thing. It had 2 setscrews on the worm gear so I was able to adjust the timing easy.
    Works flawless now

    Thanks for the video! I thought the skipped zig zag stitches (some peaks and lots of straight lines) were due to timing issues, until i changed the jersey needle to a normal one and the stitches became normal! Turned out that i had an entire pack of spent / lemon jersey needles, another pack was fine!

    Good for you! This was a common problem with this series of Singer machines.

    Big mistake taking the timing belt off now can't get it back on. Now to figure out how to get the bolt unscrewed on the base so I can see the gear to the right! I have an older Singer 2502C. At this point it looks like I'm going to have to take to the repair shop.
    OK update; @lunasails5850 was correct! You don't need to take the timing belt off... I was able to adjust by loosening the set screws on the larger gear to the right and it's working and I got my zigzag stitch back!! Thank you for helping me get there.

    thanks for nice tutorial. Just it is so strange how possible Singer released unit with incorrect timing. Mine machine made in China and it is replica of Janome. However how is possible that reputable sewing machine producer as Singer can have such a flaw. Shame on Singer,

    You shouldn’t have to deal with the belt.. there are set screws on the other gear to the right. But nice video. I just got a similar machine and it is all out of wack. Thanks

    @tomobedlam297 5 месяцев назад +1

    Someone has messed with it and put the belt on one notch out. This video shows how you can rectify this - that's all.
    Proper timing adjustment is a little more involved (and precise).

    My brain cant wrap my head around this but at least a solution exists. Maybe my dad who is more into tech will understand? I cant clearly see where the hook and needle are aupposed to be and i think thats why im confused. I hope i can figure this out and it works!

    Wrong way to fix the timing. Timing belt could be fixed by loosening two screws on the larger wheel to the right behind the lid then the belt could be moved easily.

    I have a similar machine. Mine is a rare 9210. I'm not sure it is the same mechanically, the bobbin case is the same I have to check how to access the bottom but I have a hard time understanding from this video where the needle should be. But thanks for the video, I can't use my machine much, even the straight stich is pretty ugly so I have nothing to loose and will try to fix it. thanks

    • @lauradee6385
      @lauradee6385 3 года назад

      This video was really helpful. It gave me the courage to open up my machine and try to fix it. My timing was different, I cleaned up all the mechanisms which were pretty dusty. In order to play with the “mechanism” at the bottom though I had to open much more than the left side so after cleaning them, touching them a little I checked another video on how to fix it from the top, from the needle piece. Well, not sure what did it but I played with a screw, the timing seemed good and closed everything. It was a succès ;) For the first time not only could I do the zig zag but also all the other stitches 😜 Thanks a lot!

    I have a similar one and have same issue.Can i try to adjust the needle bar instead underneath?easier to do.thank you

    • @satsumamoon
      @satsumamoon 2 года назад +1

      The needle bar is for adjusting the distance between the hook and the needle. The needle shouod be a no more than millimetre away from the hook , a papers width is ideal . It shoulod not be touching.

    I'm sorry, but you didn't explain how to adjust the timing...what did you do to the belt that affected it? Confused. I thought timing was a very difficult thing that required special tools to measure mm's etc. Thank you though. Also washing fabric before sewing, plus a new needle designed for that fabric, will usually resolve it.

    i have a2662 singer and it looks like the hook is timed right, but when trying to zig zag the needle goes into the fabric and "then" moves in a zig zag direction both ways. the needle shouldn't move side to side while in the fabric. how is it adjusted? or is it also associated with the hook timing?

    Unfortunately, this did not help my Singer Samba 5. I only made it worse, I tried to shift against the movement, and the result was the same for the movement. The sewing machine skips on the right stitch of a zigzag.

      I have this problem too and can't seem to figure it out :( I've re aligned my hook 50 times already and it looks all good manually rotating it, but the right side of my zig zag is missing everytime I stitch (resulting in a straight stitch)

    • @salvasalvas
      @salvasalvas 2 года назад

      @@hannahnevaeh6379 I found a solution to the problem. Can be smoothly adjusted by loosening the three black screws on the right toothed shaft. It is located at the bottom right under the cover.

    • @salvasalvas
      @salvasalvas 2 года назад

      These small screws need to be loosened. Then you can set the shaft to the desired position relative to the needle.

      Someone in the comments said that on the second gear , to the right, off camera) youll find a screw to adjust the timing and thats the proper way to adjust the timing without messing with the belt
