- Two rare excerpts of La Traviata from the famous Australia tour, in 1965, that marked the establishment of the legendary Opera couple Joan Sutherland-Luciano Pavarotti and his definitive ascension as an opera star.
This is a tribute to Pavarotti's generous personality and great artistry on the sad occasion of his death. From now on this video is also a tribute to Joan Sutherland, one of the most legendary singers ever and perhaps the most consistently great singer of the past century. Also take this beautiful and historic interpretation as a perfect reminder of what artists can achieve when there is true confidence and friendship between them
LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (1935-2007) and DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND (1926-2010)
Rest in Peace!
My mother took me (then 18) to see La Traviata in Adelaide in 1965. The performance of Sutherland (and Pavarotti) turned out to be a life changing moment. From that moment on music and opera and Sutherland in particular became fixations. Hearing these contemporary performances has again reduced me to awe and wonder.
Glorious, glorious, glorious, both duets, from both of them. How lovely to hear Luciano when he sang ultra-sensitively. I have heard major excerpts from this performance, and someone should issue it on CD. It shows both of them at their best, and is exciting and dramatic, to boot--far superior to their studio recording, and, in my opinion, the most beautifully sung Traviata performance of all time.
Just such a great pairing of voices. He is superb, she is the best. How great that we have these two voices recorded so much together. Their recordings of pieces are so great.
how lightly she sings! just perfectly well!
the beauty of her voice is magnificant-and yet she trained one of the most memorable voices of the century = there but for the grace of God .
What utterly glorious singing from both artists!
RIP Pavarotti. We are very lucky he left us so many recordings so future music lovers will know what a great singer he was.
Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti, great singers of the pas century. Thanks!!!
los mejores
Joan and Leontyne Price are the last two great sopranos still living that were born in the 1920's. I saw Joan many times; my house (Sutherland House) is named after her. A truely wonderful woman.

Amazing! What a duo, never will be repeated. Thanks for this memory.
That was the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long time. Thank you for creating and sharing.
The first time I've heard such perfect balance of voices in "Parigi..." Usually one or the other dominates and you can't appreciate the harmony fully. This is wonderful!
Simply glorious recording. These two are absolutely one of the best duos in opera history, and I'm simply awed. Good sound quality, too!
It is a great coincidence that Dame Joan met Richard B. Then he trained her from a Wagnarian soprano into this Century's greatest dramatic coloratura. And another great coincidence that Dame Joan taught Luciano how to breath. And she gave a great boost to the careers of both Luciano and Marilyn Horne. To think without the influence of Richard B., we may have the three greatest singers of all time singing in a different repertoire.
I could care less about his high notes (okay maybe not), I love Pavarotti for his dark, luxurious timbre, covered middle voice and elagant, solid technique.
A magic pair of voices, meant for each other.....thank you so much for the opportunity to indulge in this video any time.
Dame Joan taught Pavarotti how to breathe. He was having difficulty with stamina. When he learned how to breath properly, his voice got larger and he could sing higher. Pavarotti had a long career thanks to Joan.
Corelli also learned to sing the High C sharp by studying Joan...
george prentice really?
Heartbreaking.
I had goosebumps the whole entire video! Expecially when they were singing together
I'm ashamed to say that I only discovered this channel today... What a wonderful selection of operatic gems! Thank you thank you thank you! Joan Sutherland is my favorite singer of all time. 💖
I'm so glad that you enjoyed my channel. I hope you keep looking forward to the videos I've been posting here every now and then. Cheers! ;-)
Will there ever be a duo like Luciano and Joan? How super to have this video to play whenever we want.
i know I'm quite off topic but do anyone know a good site to stream new series online ?
@Felipe Landry i use Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Felipe Landry i watch on FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
Magnificent!TY
Tonight they are giving a command performance in heaven!
simply the Best.
Joan and Luciano ARE Violetta and Alfredo. Verdi wrote it for them, unknowingly, just a century too early...
Thank you thank you thank you for making this magic (and history) available to us!
Chillingly beautiful.
SIMPLY THE BEST.
exquisito, maravillosoooooo
@josetacoronte Unfortunately I never saw Joan "live" but I heard
Pavarotti twice.
They are now singing in heaven.
I saw/heard both of them live at this time (1965) when Joan was still at the height of her career and Luciano just beginning. I was very young so don't have any detailed recollection apart from the fact that I knew I was witnessing something quite extraordinary.
fantastic !!
@heigei1 Yes, really a sad day. I consider myself blessed for having had the opportunity of seeing and hearing her "live" during a number of her performances. Her voice was magical. I have never heard anyone sing coloratura like she did. Rest in peace, dear Joan.
Just saw La Traviata & these songs are beautiful...even better to hear Mr Pavarotti sing them...Thank you for the post!
This is my favorite version of this song. I absoultely love the way he sings the beginning.
she outsings him so bad
loved this
She did that all the time
@Alleeexoscm TOTALMENTE CIERTO........CIERTO...VERDADERO........PERFECTO COMENTARIO........UN PLACER ESCUCHARLO.........FELICIDADES AMIGO......
Is it me or did the prompter say 'bravi' after they finished the last notes of 'Un di, felice'? If so that would be the first time for me to hear a prompter praising the star on stage...what a cool moment! Their singing is sublime as always :D
No, there will never be a vocal team like that ever again.
First, you have the greatest coloratura soprano of all time and the most famous tenor of all time.
Not only will you not have another singer, we'll likely never have another tenor to equal Pavarotti in fame.
This is exceptionally wonderful we common folk are allowed to enjoy such high class music. Thank You You Tube for allowing this great opportunity.
It's a terrible shame in America so many turn away from such beautiful music.
Thank You,
Like listening to history..Amazing to hear the 2 greatest together at the beginning of their collaboration....Wish I could find this recording!
Wonderful partnership. Such beautiful voices.
That is called a prompter and it is quite normal in the opera house. When you attend the performance, you usually don't hear it, but sometimes a broadcast microphone will pick it up. (on some of the old Callas broadcasts the prompter is quite intrusive!)
Sweet dreams - no one comes even close.
Thank you for this post !!
R.I.P. Dame Joan and Sir Pavarottti.
"Pavarotti"...fuiste mi faborito, en cuanto a tu vos,no dejando de reconocer a Jose y Domingo.
nu putem decat sa ne bucuram ca exista ceva atat de frumos in lumea asta mizerabila in care traim.
Was a big down to the music and the world.
YES, ALWAYS THE BEST.
Joan always said that she memorized her music before the performance, but that she liked to bring the music stand out for insurance.
Wow...
WHAT a duet !!Thanks
Thank you for posting.
They sing marvellous together. They sing with coure.
Pure emotion, nostalgia.
Big Lucy and Big Joan. Immortals!!
Thank you Maestro!
Blagodara ti Maestro!
So effortless. It's amazing how can sound so perfect. Too bad about the talking on the background :S
Loved.
Still the Best!
viva, dame joan and big pav. verdi= viva emanuel ri di italia.
Belissima
The Best!!!
STILL THE BEST.
Pavarotti also sings marvellously in 1967 on the Karajan dvd of Verdu's Requiem also available on RUclips
Simply sublime!
Te quiero Luciano ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
'un di felice' is the best aria I've ever heard
Actually I don't know ... I got it in the Internet, but before finding it I never knew excerpts from the Australia tour existed. I still hope there is a complete recording of one of the operas they sang in Australia that year. ;-)
The best!!!!!11
True...especially later in the career. She didn't seem to have memory issues when she was a young singer.
Love the prompt even!
No wonder Pavarotti think she is the voice of the Century,
diana ventura LOL INDEED
The ad is before Pavarotti started singing is annoying. Whoever uploaded this performance, can you post the entire opera? This is glorious singing even for a young Joan Sutherland.
Opera companies used to have a person called "the prompter" stationed in a small cubicle at footlight level. Only his head showed to the performers and the audience couldn't see him. He would speak the first word of a phrase to the performer in case they had forgotten it. The prompter is not used in most opera companies today.
¡¡ Magnífica !!.
good night sweet prince
Sei un canário...
Luciano y la Stupenda!!!!!
diganme alguno, habra mejor duo que ellos?????
Claro que no!!!!!!
They were in such spectacular voice. However, the stage floor mike picking up the prompter is hilarious. Such was the case when broadcasts had to picked up since there weren't microphones all over the stage and house!
RIP!! xx
WHAT a duet Thanks
@BitterDemo I agree this is fantastic as well, though personal taste is a freedom that we in America should relish and understand. Thankfully we are Not all the same. I revel in other folk's tastes, even though i may not enjoy them as they do, or at all. It's Not a "terrible shame" that some do not appreciate certain types of music (or foods for that matter), it's a shame that common folk's opinions of others' tastes get in the way of a common understanding; peace.
@bjornthesinger It's the prompter. Welcome to the world of bootleg opera recordings.
such a beautiful duet Pavarotti is in such fine voice so early in his career, Sutherland sings well without the mushy sound she would produce at times much to the annoyance of many..
Courage to all those without a loved one who is sad, but God is taking strength in your despair and you will become Fort hear these songs that gives you peace and love
Merry CHRISTMAS also listen on the same site or PIE JESUS Riccivittorio Glorious Hymn to Saint Anthony of Padua - or chachacha Vittorio Ricci Natasha Ricci vittorio OR TYPE A big THANK
you can get them on the GALA cd which is a cheap company but has nothing but old LIVE recordings!!!! there good but the quality is sometimes terrible. check 'em out though!
O "Un dì felice, eterea" (o primeiro no vídeo) é do Ato 1, enquanto o outro é do Ato 4, o último da ópera. :-)
