    I highly recommend the san juan mountains of southwestern Colorado. Anywhere near Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, etc.. i used to camp in Cunningham gulch just outside of Silverton, co. Just past the old one hundred mine. Beautiful country!

      Hope you figured out in advance that you have to get tickets in advance and they sell out quick. I haven't been since I was a kid and I didn't know about the tickets. We still went with the kids but didn't get to go ON any sites - only view from a distance.

    If you’re in the area around Durango or Mancos, you can also do La Plata Canyon Campgrounds- beautiful spot and free too

    Also Red Feather Lakes Colorado has a free camping area absolutely breathtaking and has moose and bear wildlife.

    I am only 19 years old, but for the last six-ish years of my life I've known that I want to move to college when I am capable of doing so. The info on this site has provided me with even more exciting opportunities to explore the day I move! Thanks for the content.

    I love Campendium and use it often, but these videos are very helpful. Nice to see the areas nearby and have the links. We've been wanting to go to Mesa Verde, but were very unhappy to learn that they don't take the National Parks Senior Pass. Love the option of the nearby campsite you featured. Thank you!

    Please note, gates are closed at Still Water pass. Fires have burned a lot of it and only a few campsites before the gate are available but not very pleasant.

    Any areas I should try to avoid? I’m gonna go car camping with a friend of mine and are trying to shoot for Rocky Mountain National Park! Just wondering also if there’s plenty of hotels just in case we can’t find a spot to park and sleep XD. Lmk ASAP we leave Thursday morning!

      ... that we know of yet! You might poke around to see if there is National Forest or BLM in the area. Campendium supporters (if you're one, thanks!) have access to BLM/NFS overlays to help you scout.     Anyone know of a spot close to the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. My so and I are planning a two week camping trip across Colorado in June and I am having trouble finding a place to set my tent up in that area.

      Yes. There is dispersed camping at the Southern lake on the West side. Or the West lake on the South side. 😂 Great for lake access!

      Most free camping is available on public lands, which are monitored and regulated by various land management agencies. Most areas do not have staff directly on site. - Liz

    NOPE! Wyoming has way more. Colorado actually sucks. I should know I’m 61 born and raised NEVER left and been an avid outdoorsman pretty much my entire life.
