The S-Class Reimagined | 2022 Mercedes Benz EQS

- Rather than simply making an EV variant of the S-Class, Mercedes took the opportunity with the EQS to reimagine what a flagship "sedan" could be. Aside from the battery and motors, the biggest thing Mercedes did was change form. Rather than an upright stately sedan, the EQS is a "cab forward" aerodynamic wing in profile with an extremely aerodynamic vibe. It also has a hatch. Yep, a hatch, not a trunk. Toss in the latest Mercedes gadgets, a bunch of ginormous screens, and all the latest luxury doo-dads in the lineup and you have quite simply one of the best EVs in the world. If you can afford one. The size and price tag of the EQS combined with the pillow-soft luxury mission make this a category of one. At least until BMW brings us their re-imagined 7-Series that is...

Yeeeeeeeah. Interior is really nice, but their exterior designer looks like he got hired over from Honda.
Honda don’t make such ugly cars lol
Agree, it looks like 2013 Honda Civic from the front fender
Wow dude, I literally posted the same exact thing!
Civic at that 😭💀
It’s a wedge like a second gen Insight. Even more so than the Prius imo
This explains the chip shortage LoL
345 miles while running the heater at 72 (really warm) is absolutely amazing. Drop it to 68 and boom another 20 miles easy.
Turn off the gimmicky ambient lighting and you drive to the moon :)
Outstanding review from an underrated car reviewer.
WOW, Mercedes went all out with their interior screens. Impressive.
Hooray - the first HONEST assessment of the rear head room! Thankyou. Other reviewers don't actually rest their head back on the head rest.
Model S now costs $95k and Quality issues + Software issues (Phantom braking on Autopilot) are still ongoing. I have Model 3 LR, but I would pick this over Model S anytime. Model S simply is not a $100k car.
However, Mercedes has never been exactly reliable either.
@@davidmccarthy6061 You are so right. However at least Mercedes knows how to treat their customers when they have issues. Merecedes made a mistake on my C class on their warranty work and they apologized and upgraded my loaner to E class. Tesla on the other hand, they did 0 appologies and I was carless for extra 5 days because of their mistakes. Newest Teslas still have issues with build quality and it's just not worth buying Tesla bearing all these issues. I really do love M3 and believes it's the best car in the segment, but these experiences just kill all the pros.
@@davidmccarthy6061 atleast you will be able to find a repair center that can fix it in a timely manner.
Wow so many people say the same thing about Teslas horrific customer service. Off putting for sure.
Does MB have anything close to autopilot / FSD?
Tesla, Lucid, Mercedes, and even Rivian are really stepping up the range game in the world of EVs. Only downside I see for these manufacturers are affordability. I understand why the start ups are so high, but when they start making affordable $25,000 - $35,000, they will sacrifice style and performance and so many will be disappointed. These guys are making some marvels of engineering though. I still give them kudos.
I don’t see that hypothesis holding water. Tesla, while still charging high-dollar for their vehicles and with rampant quality control issues (albeit getting less and less with time), is a case in point.
People are voting with their money and those startups are going all the way up.
The batteries alone cost $20K in most higher-end EVs - and that's manufacturer cost. You cannot get and never will be able to find a 100kw battery in anything under 50K, no matter how mainstream they become. This is why the actual future in 50 or 100 years will likely be fuel cells which can potentially be built for a few thousand dollars at that time and offer decent ranges.
I've always thought that Tesla was going to have issues once the likes of Mercedes and Porsche started to develop electric cars.
No one can deny that Tesla has changed the industry, and their tech is second to none. You also can't argue their build quality and quantity control are terrible.
If my Lotto ticket cones in I'll likely be at the Mercedes dealer pretty damn quick.
You can argue on the build quality with Tesla. That gets magnified by a handful of issues that are not common
@@egs2169 I would say those issues are very common, but Tesla seems to fix them if you point them out. I ordered a Tesla and checked out lots of videos and practically everybody (mostly fan boys =)) still say that you have to look closely for faults when you get your new car, as its very common to have some flaws.
What can a tesla do from a tech point of view that this can't? This has more features.
@@SDav21 the tesla can drive itself
@@pastorgoof It can't. It has driver assist systems similar to every other carmaker. It can not drive itself. And actually it's self parking if even worse than the simple systems from mainstream carmakers.
Base Model S starts at $94,990, not $88,740. Plaid starts at $130,000, not $122,740. Looks like you're using the price Tesla shows by default, the price after savings, with California selected as your state. No, that's not confusing at all Tesla... I've actually seen quite a few car reviewers misstate the price because of that. Your EQS prices didn't include the $7500 tax credit either.
I agree, it is deceptive the way Tesla has it on their website. I'd prefer to just know the real price from the get-go.
@@desimo147 I know clicking a single button is hard.
@@shankhadeepshome3982 Why should you have to? It's deceptive. Europe banned Tesla from doing that... but they keep doing it in the US. Honestly, does the effing government have to be responsible for always forcing these companies to do the right thing? It sure seems like it...
This car is expensive enough that the tax credit does not apply at the Federal Level. $7500 tax credits only apply for vehicles below a certain price point, and this one exceeds that maximum price limit.
@@unconventionalideas5683 No EQS is eligible for 7500$ tax credits.
Love the fact that the taillights are all red but give you an Amber turn signal. Why can't automakers do that instead of those unsafe red turn signals
What’s insane is what I’ve seen with ram.
Multicolored turn signals with amber turn lights that replace and go red with the brake lights.
Like they went through the extra work and still ended up with red turn signals!
My Mustang gets around it with it's arrow-like sequential action. But you are correct that few manufacturers even try to deal with this issue in a sane manner.
Uuuuuugggg. I fear that touch capacitive EVERYTHING (and zero actual buttons) is going to be the new direction.
Already is 😔 All about cost savings. And it's all Zoomers know how to use
My very first electric sedan! Nice job Alex.
Great interior, exterior not so much.
You don’t realize how underwhelming the EQS is till you see a W222 or W223 from the side.
This cars have so much road presence, they are like aircraft carriers.
The EQS, to me, looks like a Chrysler 200 on steroids.
Considering Chrysler basically has a “Hyperscreen “ in the WAGONEER and Jeep Grand Cherokee, I see no reason why new Chryslers can’t recreate some of the EQS interior appeal.
@@PassportBrosBusinessClass Chrysler 200 looks MUCH better in my opinion.
1:55 convinient place to urinate 😃
Can't open the hood, wow.
Indeed - it's bizarre. I don't buy the excuse that it's due to the large cabin filter - I think there's something else going on. If it really is due to the filter, why not make that optional, and provide the alternative of a frunk? I'd MUCH prefer extra storage!
@@gregsullivan7408 Here is a view under the hood. It CAN be opened without special tools. The large black box you see in the middle is the HEPA filter. ruclips.net/video/ENIgZECs1fQ/видео.html
The downsides to the Mercedes are the dealerships that charge thousands over MSRP, availability, reliability, and the unreliable charging network. That said, I’m looking forward to seeing one in person. Great review!
EQS is the one I would buy/lease. The hatchback version is incredible, checks all the boxes. Alex, I think you need to focus a little more attention on aftermarket support. While folks generally love the Tesla buying experience (except when they double bill you, and don't return your money for months on end), Tesla owners don't like the experience when they have a repair, or get into an accident and need to get their car fixed at a body shop. For ease of repairs, I would buy the MB, you have the nationwide dealer support, and for accidents, your local bodyshop can get you back on the road quickly and efficiently. I recall when TFL had to repair their Tesla and it literally took half a year. If I had to buy a BEV today, and price were of no concern, I would buy an EQS 580. One final though on the DTC BEV brands like Tesla, Lucid, Rivian, what will happen when there is a nationwide recall, how will they handle it (and I don't mean a software/firmware issue, I mean a mechanical issue)
As a typical buyer of used cars all my life, I wouldn't go near that screen once it's out of warranty!
Yes who needs screen in a car anyway? Just one more thing to break and cost arm and a leg. Just attach an android tablet wherever you want and it's done
The batteries are warranted to 10years. The price of replacement probably means that once they go you might as well recycle the whole car. The EQS will be my third full screen Mercedes-Benz my first one already has 5 years in wisconsin weather they have never had any issues at all.
Buy new then
@@springer-qb4dv exactly why need anything in a car, why headlights? Just use flashlights from Walmart; why seats? Just get an office chair from Office Depot 😂
👏👏👏
Absolutely excellent review and aside from motortrend, the only full review of the 580 as of yet in the US press. Thankfully, also a very neutral point of view as usual, kudos Alex. Just one question, I think there is an additional regen mode, auto regen, which varies the regen from full to none depending on nav data, however, that may be an european only feature. Again thanks for the very finest review on the net. I'm waiting for my selenite magno 580 exclusive to arrive.I was lucky to pull the trigger a few weeks ago and find an allocation at my local dealer. I have no idea when it will be delivered but hoping early next year. At this time they are very hard to oder if you can find one to order at all. Ill be sad to see my E43 go but Ive been looking for an EV that I can use in my corner of the world without range anxiety and from a manufacturer that truly knows how to make a car and the EQS finally fit the ticket.
This vehicle is pretty cool. Definitely will take sales away from those cross shopping a Tesla model S/X.
One of my dream cars 😍♥️
The exterior is truly abhorrent - like a bar of Irish Spring and a gen 2 Prius had a baby.
🤣🤣
lol...
Gen 2 Prius looks better for what that car is, but I’m biased
LMAO. Even though I like this car, your comment truly made me LOL!
Bar of irish spring 💀
Glad you compare it to the Taycan....I love the drive of my Taycan but hating the interior on how inconsistent is the connection between my phone and the car. Often my car play just does not work, typical Porsche. I think I might have to switch to Benz
The EQS shape looks funky, but it may grow on me overtime. It is impressive to see other manufactures to compete with Tesla with all these new offerings. It is like ten years ago when the Model S first came out. Surprisingly, Tesla refuses to offer a new generation of the S but instead invest in new products like the Cybertruck.
Always enjoyed your non-bias review, thx
Mercedes makes the best interiors
@Brandon S Well almost the best. For me, nothing beats the Bentley Flying Spur or the Bentley Continental GT interiors. So Bentley first, this EQS and maybe Rolls Royce third. About 80th would be my 2013 Honda ;-)
I'm still disappointed by the S-class redesign, so the new EQS looks very attractive to me in comparison. Thank you Alex for another awesome vehicle introduction/review. ✔
You are in the very small, small, tiny, short minority.
lol what? the S Class looks amazing. The EQS is what's disappointing. My dad's deciding which of them to buy, and I guarantee you that if the EQS looked exactly like the S Class, it wouldn't even be a consideration; he'd go for the EQS immediately.
@@NeutralGenericUser 1000000% agree with you. Honestly, the EQS works if you get it in black. But I'll never give the car any kind of respect if I see one on the road, or the person who bought it lol. It just screams "I have shitty taste in stuff".
Looks like a Honda Civic from the late 1990s absolutely. Definitely not an S Class.
@@NeutralGenericUser But then the EQS would have like 50 miles less range.
Mercedes and BMW lost any luster they had in the 80s-90s. Now they're all lease vehicles / rental vehicles and everyone with a Louis Vuitton purse, Gucci sunglasses, and massive credit card debt has one.
I prefer the Taycan's interior feel but its almost impossible for me to get in and out of. I'm quite broad shouldered and long bodied so its like trying to post myself between the seat and roof.
I'm off to the Mercedes dealer as soon as they get one of these in and we'll see if they can dust the cobwebs off my wallet.
First one of your reviews that I have watched. Outstanding! You give tons of information, objectively, leaving it to your viewers to use their personal views (e.g., regarding design) and priorities (e.g., luxury vs. performance) to form a POV regarding the vehicle. Thank you.
Whose reviews did you watch before then?
@@keytothegate68 All that I could find after the EQS was released. Favorite was probably Marques Brownlee.
I agree with your assessment I love the EQS. Only drawback is it available charging at work and also I found the brake pedal to be very squishy. To the point where I wasn’t sure if it was going to stop. If I had the money I would think I would’ve bought the EQS. Dad I said old for the Tesla model Y performance
I would say that Lucid has outdone it
No. Lucid is crap!
@@cartmann227 if you say so, must be true
great review alex but I'm not sure anything about the exterior could be considered "sexy".. interior looks great but everything about the exterior looks weird, disproportioned and with no frunk less functional! the cab forward design does not work here..
I thought it was ugly until i went to the dealer sat in it and i was impressed.
I would buy this over a Tesla any day.
i wouldn’t. it’ll still be unreliable
Actually like the front design of the EQS. The Lucid Air is gorgeous and can't wait to see more of the car. Tesla proved EV technology and awoke interest but they have boring design elements. The newer EV's from other companies are matching or exceeding the aerodynamics and range with better build quality.
Judging by the low roof over rear seats, I take this is not intended to be a chauffeured vehicle.
Agreed - massive fail IMHO. I'm a chauffeur, and have a diesel Q7 on order - no problems with rear head room with that vehicle. (and zero range anxiety 😀)
The only thing lacking is my budget!
Alex - As thorough of a review as you’ve ever shared. Left me scratching my head about the Taycan and S-class comparison and pricing. Loved the interior & tech.
Let me get this right. The Mercedes is a luxury vehicle and the Porsche is a sports car? Thanks for clearing that up! Sorry for the sarcasm, couldn’t help myself. Enjoyable review as always.
I *REALLY* wish 1) the steering weren't as numb as has been reported even in the AMG model, and 2) I'd live with that IF it incorporated the predictive suspension as the Audi S8 does, but it doesn't. OH and the back seat comfort is beneath the cachet of an S-Class. BTW it IS possible to open the "bonnet" you have to look a bit under the driver-side dash.
Thank You for all the info. I went and bought one last week. I love it. Mine is the 450+.
Very comprehensive ,like it useful.
You need to emphasize the importance of rear seat tire space and tight support. It looks like this car does an excellent job in those areas.
I have been waiting for this review for sooo long.. As always, wonderful review... with that said, on one hand, I'm thrilled that you love it... on the other hand, I'm not as I have one on pre-order and was hoping to find an easy reason not to spend over $100k for a car... I suppose you only live once... :)
can't take your money with you when you die! there are much, much worse ways to spend $100k than this. enjoy

Nice Civic.
The Lucid schooled them from the get go.
Yes EQS is the EV I would buy also, if unlimited funds were available - it is THE ONE.
That interior just blows the Tesla away
I should hope so, it's like 50k more expensive then model S
Another great review Alex! I’m with you the EQS would be my choice as well. I currently have seven great cars including seven series, M3, X5 and even A Chrysler Pacifica hybrid on your recommendation and a favor driving the Pacifica with it’s all electric mode much of the time. I’ve been waiting for a Mercedes EV for a long time and feel it would be my choice as well. Now all Mercedes needs is the full self driving tesla has (I’ve heard from German engineers saying they have the software and capability, just not enabled yet).
Yeah, that's exactly what we need, full scale deployment of self driving cars, cuz they work PERFECTLY.
If money were no object, I would choose either the EQS or the iX.
I would go for the EQS. Less money and more modern than an S Class. The Porsche and the Tesla are fun cars for a thrill but this is the best daily driver.
Ridiculous that the base model doesn’t even have wireless charging included.
As far as I know it does.
@@Wised1000 according to Alex’s comparison chart at the end it doesn’t. Really not surprised since I had to buy it as an option with my 2021 Mercedes.

All of those screens look awesome but I imagine there would be quite a bit of glare from the sun at certain angles. First thing I'd do is black out that gigantic star in the grill. =P If money was no object I'd definitely go for the Taycan, I love the design etc.
I would buy the EQS.
Loved your review!! What is up with MBUX & Apple Car Play??
Alex can you do a video on charging at home? like if you have issues or the rate isnt charging like it says. I live in the country and i am getting my ducks in a row before i upgrade my electric to charge a car.. I thinking about a VW ID4 for my first electric car.
It’s so hilarious to me when Alex closes the trunk deck on himself! Lmao it’s a great expression of humanity & humor in a very “low” priced and slightly intimidating, electrified German cruiser! Thanks Alex! This is cool but 5x my budget. Hahhahahahaa
Electric motors are capable of spinning the rubber off the tires? That would be cool to see
Yes actually. This is a problem for ultra performance EVs

R class should looking good as an EV. Really hope they can make a EQR but very unlikely...
Looking forward to the e-class equivalent
Defiantly buying one in the future
I bought one and love it .. I highly recommend it it ….
Looking at the Kia ev6 or the Genesis version GV60 when they are available.
Is there self driving option? I drive Tesla Y now and self driving future is great
9:05 Is the E-Tron GT smaller than this or does it have a normal trunk? Anyway the Taycan Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo exist so they will likely be the most practical in that segment.
I actually had an easier time getting in and out of the E-trim.
The EQS is larger but the door entry isn’t. These cars are tighter than they need to be.
I still get the Porsche, the sporty looks and handling is compelling.
Beautiful.
I drove the EQS 450 and EQS 580.
Front driver space is too small compared to my W222 S-class.
Interior of the W223 would be nicer with the Hyperscreen.
The Hyperscreen is what sells the EQS.
Otherwise, The EQS is exactly what the market wants: a big EV.
Unfortunately it’s $100,000+
I would definitely buy EQS
eqs all the way, it might be worth it to buy the dash from the dealer and install it on my computer desk
Is the battery size referenced the size of the pack or usable capacity? Did not mention rear steering, do all US models get the 10 degree rear steering? The 450 range is higher than the 580.
All US models get 10-degree rear steering
The quoted capacity is usable capacity. The total capacity is rumored to be around 120.
1:46. Yes you can. Just unscrew the cover under the steering wheel and the hood pop is in the usual spot.
Yes!!! Amber indicators! Finally.
Nice presentation. You mentioned that you would buy EQS , I ordered it since a month already. Some people are not happy with the exterior design. I think it is Ok for an EV and the interior is the place to stay, I am more interested in myself comfort and not in the opinion of those from the street. Compared with Tesla EQS is however a car taking the tradition into the future and I love cars more than computers. I think it is better to build the new technologies around a car than around a computer acting as a car. Here is the strength of Mercedes approach based on solid background in the car industry. There are many people loving Tesla and Tesla stories and always will be such people. But clearly the competition will take a good slice of the market because the people are very different. For exemple for me the Tesla tablet and software were not enough to compensate the design, quality and modest interior. Surely there are others like me and this is visible in the number of EQS sold in only a few months. Probably for the next 4 years EQS will still be a valid proposal. After, we shall see.
you will love it!!!
I'll be the first one to give Tesla a loud ovation for their pushing the industry into EVs but I'll also be the first one to question the value proposition. Tesla's fit and finish, software reliability and phantom braking , are simply unacceptable for the price of their cars. Tesla reminds me of typical Silicon Valley computer companies, shove the product out the door in the name of first to market and for gadget marketing purposes but don't put customer's frustrations into consideration. I still remember the 80s and 90s when American cars' fit and finish and reliability put them into existential threat and were chewed out but Tesla is getting a lot of benefits of doubts with their problems.
I had an S550 & the dealer told me that when the warranty was close to expiration to trade it in or sell it. Any repair beyond warranty would be prohibitive. I hope they have changed their longevity philosophy.
This is true, that's why an extended warranty is a good idea.
Definitely the EQS.
IF Money is no object... Definitely the EQS ALL The Way.... I may be one of the few who actually LIKES the distinctive exterior shape of the EQS, but then I do subscribe to the concept of "Form Follows Function" free of unecessary so called "styling features". The Mercedes Benz EQS drag co-efficient of just 0.020 (the lowest of any successful mass produced vehicle) bears testimony to this....
Good lord that thing has a huge battery.
actually i believe that the center and passenger screens are OLED and only the driver's is LCD. i think this is due to viewing angle limitations of LCD screens. unfortunately OLED has brightness limitation which makes reflections a big problem.
The interior blows anything Tesla and quite frankly what most other high end EVs have to offer out of the water. Although the UI looks a bit dated to me, hopefully they can fix that. Exterior could use work too.
the car is terrible for what it is, only reason it’s good is because mercedes built it.
@@justabrokeredneck Terrible in which way ? This is supposed to be a S of EV and it checks all the box.
@@justabrokeredneck Yeah! That's blasphemy!
Until this video I didn't know both Tesla and Lucid were midsize sedans.
So if there is no heat pump can you talk more about how Mercedes uses their Thermal Battery Management System to augment what a heat pump would otherwise perform? Advantages versus disadvantages? Thanks
Nice !
Now that is a legitimate Mercedes EV! Good to see the company finally made an EV with their high class luxury standards
I too love Avi Kaplan.
Yet Another Great A\A Review. I love the styling. Will you have to drop the front sub-frame to service the AC etc?
Nope. The hood can be opened at the dealership. Essentially anything that has to do with service besides adding wiperfluid and changing minor fuses is not owner accesible. It makes sense, there really isn't any maintenance to do! If the motors and/or batteries ever need work those portions can be "dropped".
Aerodynamics are important for any vehicle that goes on the highway.
Why on earth would you build a clean sheet car without utilizing the front area for storage?
There is valid debate on both sides. Storage in the front means a longer front. Generally speaking adding that same vehicle length to the rear yields more storage space, so a Model Y or w Mach E for instance that traded 10" of nose for 10" in the rear would have more space vs the current design with the large frunk.
Everything about it is so impressive, but my favorite part are the combination of screens throughout the dashboard and, having USB-C inputs!
I am all in on EVs and I own a plug in hybrid but it is rare that I really like the exterior styling but man, this car is beautiful! Now just need to win the lottery....
