I was fortunate enough to not only attend a seminar on catching kicks and Muay Thai sweeps from Kevin Ross, but to also be swept upside down (and then some) by him! Listen as he explains how to properly catch your opponents leg, sweep their foot out, and dump them!

This video just made 3 different sweeps finally click for me. Absolutely amazing breakdown. It seems so much less complicated than before
I was shadow boxing and my shadow knocked me out
😂😂😂😂
+Mitch Fogelsanger My shadow stomped on my knee ;-;
+Mitch Fogelsanger My shadow cheated by kicking me in the groin :(
Lol
Gaming Squad It's not funny, I am walking around in a brace ;-; I am going to contact the shadow realm and sue my shadow... PAY FOR MY COLLEGE!!!
Kevin Ross, hell yeah! I remember he pulled this sweep off against Tetsuya Yamato in their first fight. Great video, as usual, Shane.
He sure did. Yamato hit the ground HARD, too.
***** Yep. Went flying through the air and crashed. Awesome tutorial, man.
Thank you for mentioning this. My son taught me that catch. I’m not sure where he learned it, but I was used to catching with the same side. We practiced that a bit yesterday. Today, one of the coaches at the gym where we train said that that is not a good technique 🤔 I don’t ever just believe anything anyone says especially when it goes against what makes sense to me, so here I am doing research. I’m glad you mentioned the fight. I went to look at it, and it was beautifully executed.
Great video as always! I'm having my first mma fight at the end of April and man ill tell you, the pressure is on.
Did you win?
0:01 haha
kevin giggled before he swept you
+jimbanzo He was loving it.
Great video mate, I've always had problems with sweeps. We'll see how it turns out in class!
its great, my Kru, Marc Meltzer is at this coaches' seminar. He's in the background of all these videos. He's brought back a lot of this stuff and have us working on it. Good stuff
good vids as always man,
+Niko Williams Great to hear, Niko!
+fightTIPS hey Shane do u prefer the peekaboo defence or the Philly shell defence.?
Love this. Not too hard to execute once you catch the kick.
This is dope! Loving this muay thai "mini series"
+ZayWooT Great to hear!
I remember seeing this on your Instagram a while ago and now many people can learn it!
Aye shane , if you dont mind can you do a video " How To Keep Correct Balance During A Fight " . i'll apreciate it man !!
step 1: don't fall
step 2: repeat step 1
So my coach did this other day full speed. Was not ready. Landed on my neck and shoulder and saw stars. Muay Thai aint no damn joke lol 😂
When you do this, try not to think of it as a sweep, but more that you're using your hip while running through them. Like he says in the video, just lifting their leg throws their balance off so much that it doesn't take much to get their foot off the ground.
+Levi Skardsen The sweep itself the very last piece of the puzzle, yes!
***** When I first tried to learn this, I struggled a little. My instructor watched then told me I was trying to do everything backwards. He suggested trying it without the sweep, just the run through and the hip bump. I tried it and there's my partner on the floor.
So yeah, you can actually do this without the sweep, but if they're very flexible, you'll need the sweep at the end just to give it that extra bit of disruption to their balance.
Great video, thanks for posting it.
Thanks for all your videos. You're a great coach and great fighter.
3:02 hes super heavy
3:04 guy looks sad
Good demonstration of this technique.
I've been waiting to see how he did that. thanks for the upload.
My brother and I were watching this and at 0:03 we simultaneously said 'oooohhhh' when he swept his legs.
+The Guy Haha you can here a couple of people in the background saying the same thing!
Pffft this is so easy. *goes outside and gets in a fight and misses the leg and gets kicked in the head and get knocked out cold and be sent to the hospital * Shane at least you should've told me not to do this. Oh well time to sue you lol 😂
I was waiting for something like this. What a coup for you and the channel.
+Art Golden You're telling me! ;)
Hi Shane, how long take a fighter to become a professional fighter with real hard work? I recently had my first fight in an octagon and that was surreal, i really like this
6 months. If you are training excessively. No days off. I'm not talking about gym work outs. I'm talking of techniqus. Use it constantly.
Shane has the best vids period
+Thatboy Benny My man!
very clear
Shane, what "attributes" do you feel are most important in fighting? I.e. Power, speed, precision, timing etc.
Its critical 😂
Great instructional
Nice video on how to sweep shane! and seeing you get sweeped by the guy explaining in the video kinda reminds me of the sweeps the muay thai fighter saenchai does to his opponents lol
Kevin fought Saenchai!
+fightTIPS Woah! He did!? he lost I'm guessing?
hell yes. thanks for the pointers
Awesome Shane!
Great tips ! Thank’s a lot !
This guy looks intimidating and dangerous as fuck. Did anyone see that smile as he swept Shane? I do not want to fuck with this guy already and on top of that his name is the SOUL ASSASSIN. What the fuck? You only get one cool thing! You don't get to have an intimidating name, insane skill AND the face of a demon.
dope teacher you help so much
+Boi Nasty Great to hear!
I learn so much from you! Thank you, when is your next fight?
That's great to hear, Rafaela! I'm not sure.
Woah Shane that intro... You did a freakin backflip xD
+iSwervz hahah oh I'm aware!
Good as always
+The Ren Thank you!
+fightTIPS :-D
Cool bro thanks
Make a video on whod win in afight between a striker or grapler in the street and why !
can go both ways. a fight is always 50/50 altough if the striker gets taken down hes pretty much fuked
On the street a striker will almost always win ; once it goes to the ground your friends may start kicking your opponent and it's over no matter how good the other is at grappling.
Bas in a 1v1 situation the grappler will win most of the time idk what ur talking about
+Daniel Henrique in a cage, yes. On street, for example on a schoolfield, I highly doubt it. Once the striker and wrestler go to the ground, what do you think the friends of the striker will do? They'll start kicking the wrestler, taking away his main strength: the groundfight.
Bas van der Veen in a 1v1 situation even in the street a grappler against a striker the grappler will always win.
Damn I love that move! If you really hate the guy you can do some damage with those sweeps. 😊
sweet shorts. purple is the bomb.
Teep sweep attack catch body kick
This is so different from the sweep you guys teach in your mixed striking class online
Sweet! Love the channel!!
Thanks Josh!
Left-handers also do a sweep with a one-sided foot or you need a front?
Very informative :P
hey shane where can i get quality muay thai shorts like yours, because i really like yours but i cant find good ones on the internet
I really love your videos too man and I know this sounds weird but can u do a video tutorial on slap boxing? I want to know some tips from you?
Hasami Uke sweep!
have you ever done a video about shadow boxing i mean in theory not about how to do it but how good it is and why?
Nice vid shane
+ClashWithLouis Thank you!
Very nice!!!
+Thomas Ryan Thanks Thomas!
+fightTIPS hey Shane, love the channel and shared with all my kickboxing and mma friends. Anyways, who do you think would win a fight between wonderboy Thompson and Niecky Holzken? Would like to hear an expert's opinion
so awesome I've used these sweeps. I stole mines from watching cung li lol. this videos dope..
do a vid on how to stop someone from taking you down from a really low angle
shane u should do a video on the capoeira kick that conor mcgregor does
Very good sweep. Looks cool too if you pull it off. What's a good way of defending it though?
I would say something like the Whizzer in wrestling. Overhook their arm and stomp your leg down freeing it.
The good way to defend it is with your elbow
My sparring partner sometimes does some kind of a jumping knee and smashes his leg down at the same time, you could try it out
drop kick works too, but if you don't land it be prepared for the ground fight.
hallo Shane
can you maybe explain how to not be tense in sparring ? like not being scared in punching
+Keywan Irani Practice, experience. Smile and breath. Enjoy yourself in there!
+fightTIPS thanks sir I will
make video saying how.to not lose your breath during a fight
Shane if I want to go into an MMA gym, which martial arts should I have under my belt to begin. I already have karate
Well. There are about 3 MAIN martial arts used in mma (lots are used but these are like the bases) there wrestling, jiu jitsu, and kickboxing/Muay Thai
Can you teach us some jeet kune do, like with a jkd expert
+Hey Dude Noted, dude!
***** awesome!! :D
Keep it up dood!
wat if you catch the leg the rear where you only can kick his shin?
Wow looks like every gym have their own methods of catching kicks and sweeps
+Uncle Google There are many different ways, yes. Some coaches/fighters prefer some over others -- and that's okay!
ey i'm going to my first ufc fight in ahoy rotterdam 8 may .can you give a sneek pre-view of overeem and arlovski
when I shadow box should I fully extend my punches?
+Ruben P He has a video on shadow boxing, you should watch it its really good
THIS IS AN EMERGENCY: So I was rough housing with a friend of mine, where he hit me twice with his bag and then I got him into a chokehold for with enough force to get him to the ground, but not hard enough where he could be knocked unconscious. After about 5-10 seconds I let go and he was still able to walk talk and stand but I'm concerned that he might die because I did that. Will he be likely to die from that chokehold?
lmao
10/10 troll
Shane ur the absolute shit!!!! The mechanics make so much sense in my head for this now when he talked about the drive. I was trying to figure out if it had something to do with bumps from the hip or something I can't see in fight footage. Dude thank u so much for sharing.
Also, just wondering what ur preference in shin guards is. I had fairtex for a while, then top king or raja seemed nice but I wanna hear what ur preference is; urs in the video looked nice and contorted well around ur legs.
Shouldn't have used "absolute" in front of "shit" so my bad haha. Sounds off.
+ThyChrysanthemum haha for real I thought you were about to chew him out lol
+Devin Bird agreed lol
Oh awesome brotha, glad the video helped everything click! Yes these shin guards are the best I've used: Hypnotik, by MMAWarehouse.com. A little tight at first, but they break in nicely, with no sliding.
Kevin Ross is really good and I would love to see him fight in Glory Series. I don't know why Glory don't have him fight for them. I think he do really good in it.
good video
+Yunus Emre DÜZCAN Thank you Yunus!
Shane if I throw a punch and someone grabs my wrists or both, what is the best way to reverse it?
Time travel
push both your arms to your side and headbutt, use that bit just above your forehead. aim for the chin. if they lean back to dodge that's okay, just keep driving forward for a takedown. alternatively again spread your wings and throw a knee or kick to the groin, if the groin's not open then push your hands together instead and hit the knee with a front kick
You only need to catch the cheap kick with one hand not to you. drop both hands you get set up. you put your forward hand on your belly button. let the kick land into your hand while defending with the other
Do more mma vids your the best
+Joshua Owusuforduaw Thank you Joshua, will do!
Teach me your ways o' master
What about Southpaw vs Orthodox sweep ?
can you do more videos on what to eat
+555reaper Noted!
I second this
Bro, that drop he made on your sounded like it hurt.
Question is, were you allowed to make the drop on him back?
Awesome
+James Gill Thanks James!
+fightTIPS you have inspired me to start martial arts and boxing, I jus wanted to say thanks! :)
I like it
Where's the part for side kick man hahaha but really nice video man
These shin guards of you look pretty badass!! Where are they from? :D
~Watson
Hypnotik, MMAWarehouse.com
I have long hair. Do you have any advice if an attacker manages to gain a strong grip onto my hair ?
Go towards them
+Apollo Olympos Lose the hair
+Apollo Olympos Lose the hair
boxer cut
I love having long hair, so cutting it at this point in time is not an option. :)
This is a way better technique than catching the kick the unsafe way
Nice hair cut and how are you shane
Kick catch is easy and nice skill I can do this perfectly (of course in EA UFC 2 :/ )
I always thought this was a sanda/sanshou move. I didn't know Muay Thai does it too.
should i sweep the opponent while sparring or is that to harsh?
Chewing gum while muay thai, really good... XD
00:00 i belive i can fly
Shane MMA was legalized in New York!!!
(UFC)
What about the opposers hands?, they are free to hit you in the chin while you are busy catching there kick
+Devin Sasser Absolutely; gotta act quick. Most people are more concerned about breaking their fall, though.
I remember my first Street fight and a kid shoved me from behind then did a round house kick to my head but I caught it and I kicked his other leg and he face planted on the concrete and I grabbed his bushy hair and slammed his head on the ground a few times and he was out cold for like 10minites
hey please make a vid on this issue
i go for jogging and twice my phone has been stolen how can i protect it
I don't bring my phone with me when I go jogging.
XD
But i listen music so plxxx any defense or something
Shane you showed us how to sweep. Now can you show us how to counter this move when he attempts to sweep you?
Johnny Channarong bend your leg at the knee and drive it against his hip bones/hip....while your going backwards you need to litteraly hop on your back leg to keep the distance
Hey coach how do you mitigate eating jabs to the face while you do this sweep?
The free hand can catch/parry or dracula/long guard 👍
I am Kickboxer
Did this to a school bully back in the day, he didn't try to kick me again
And for southpaws?
ok that is great ....but what can i do to make my kicks "uncatchable" ?
Nasos Kourentzhs set them up bro
Hey so I'm 6'2 and around 165 and have never been in a fight but would not be surprised if one should come up soon. I'm an orthodox but I don't know if I should have hands low or how to utilize my reach. Any tips?
Keep your hands up
Don't lean back to dodge punches. It will only make it harder for you to fight
Don't be afraid to get hit, learn to slip punches, condition yourself and get used to being hit, you don't have to dodge every single throw, learn to minimise the damage you take and utilise it.
I have no Idea what I'm talking about hahaha.... So don't trust me.
+kallen smith nice, common sense is rare on martial arts channels. you might self confess not knowing what your talking about but thats some sound advice.
So I'm thinking of taking up krav maga, which is a fighting 'sport' without really being a sport, but more like self-defense. It's rather effective and brutal, but I don't wanna end up with too many injuries from sparring, especially to the head. Anyone got any advice?
I want to start it as well, But didn't think of the concerns you just raised... ah gawd...don't want to lose too many brain cells!
+hamsterlord757 If they're gonna put you to spar then the injury ratio is not gonna be different from any other sport martial art. All the self defence stuff you can't spar with because they are by definition un-sportsmanship. The only things I would recomend: spar with someone of you're same level, use as much protective gear as you can, if you've had enough call it a day (don't listen to coleagues boosting you to fight beyond your limits), if you think your partner is striking too hard ask him to drop it down a notch, if you get KO'd be sure to get out of commission for a while.
+hamsterlord757 Krav is great. Realistic, brutal, well-rounded... but you DO need that sparring for the real-life experience. Because you can practice techniques on a pad, but when someone is punching and kicking back at you, you shut down.
+hamsterlord757 Personally, I've heard good things from Krav Maga, but it is important that sparring is involved no matter which type of martial arts school you go to, because it is the best way for you to find out:
1) How to fight different types of opponents
2) Which techniques work for you
3) What your weaknesses are and how you can overcome them
4) How to absorb punishment
No matter how often you practice, no matter what type of dai-sifu-sensei-grandmaster-instructor tries to tell you otherwise, if you don't spar, then you haven't really tested this technique out against a person whose goal it is to hit you. In the words of Mike Tyson: "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth," which is why all the techniques only work when you are being put in a situation which resembles an actual fight. If you go to a school where people tell you that they don't spar because all their techniques are "too deadly," fucking run out of there. They're bullshit artists.
Also: Sparring isn't, and shouldn't be, brutal. It is a safe environment where you get to try out your techniques against an opponent who defends himself. No competent trainer would let you do all-out sparring sessions from the start, and good trainers warn people to not go harder than they should to try and boost their egos. And when they do, they put a stop to that quickly, and these people then look foolish as fuck. Light sparring (with 50% power) is already very beneficial and can teach you a lot. Sure, you might get a bruise from not blocking in time, but most of the time, that's about it.
+fightTIPS There I am writing an essay for 30 minutes and you just sum up everything in two sentences. :D
Hey Shane, quick question, when I catch my opponents leg they it is still difficult to control them because they keep resisting and flopping like a fish out of water.
What could I do to keep them in more control so I can go for a sweep or something of that sort?
it should be super quick so they dont have time to react try working on your speed
Thanks guys, I guess I just need to spar more often
pull and lift the leg a little. just watch out for the guy who will try drop kick you
Captain Deo i
I thought the title say how to catch kid I was like okay
+jack fire If anything, I'd make a video titled: "How to Beat up a Kidnapper"
