- From December 1984. This is not the Ray Stevens song, but a Parton composition from the mid-sixties that had remained unreleased for many years. Dolly wrote it even before she moved to Nashville, recorded it around 1967, but it did not make onto an album before she left Monument. Was released as a single and reached #7 on the Country chart. It bubbled under the Hot 100 at a peak of #102.

In the 1980's I used to play classical guitar at the Chief's restaurant/bar at Rainbow Marina in Pearl Harbor on Friday and Saturday nights. When I took a break I would go into the bar, get a beer and put some quarters into the juke box and play this song - priceless.

I like the pizzicato heard right after “on a cold winter’s day,” on the radio or studio version of this(representing “seeing the snow fall on a cold winter’s day.”) Brings back memories of early 1983, when this was first released; I remember hearing it frequently then(and later into the 80s), I was big into country music then, still am.
I like many of the versions in this live show conpared to the album.

I remember this song that came out in the 80s. It didn't do very well on the radio but it's a nice song and sung by two beautiful, compassionate people.
This was a top 10 hit ...it followed Hard Candy Christmas up the charts and peaked in January of 1983

When I seen this song title I thought they were doing the Grammy award winning song written and sung by Ray Stevens. Same name but two different songs.
Technically, "(In it's own way)" makes this a different title, although that lyric is also in Ray Steven's "Everything is Beautiful" which makes for confusion.

I like Dolly Parton the songwriter more than Dolly Parton the singer. Just my personal taste.
I agree to a certain extant. She wasn't born with an ideal voice. It was very high and on the thin side. To her great credit and determination, she invented her own way of singing. It involves a lot of "trills" and similar vocalizations, but I still find it effective in expressing the emotion of the lyric. In the end, will her songwriting be more remembered than her albums? Could be.....
Too bad Dolly never did a full on movie with Willie Nelson. I heard she was set to do the 2005 Dukes of Hazard movie, but she was smart enough to back out! It was too raunchy for a theme park owner...
