That stuff worked great. I love that carving letters in will have strong contrast. Patience is the way I went for weathered boards. If you tell all your friends and family you eventually get some boards. Boards people left outside behind garage. The labor involved to clean can be more than you expected. Wire brush with a broom handle is how clean the dusty dirt off.
Sometimes I just comment for engagement. You’re easily my favorite person who I follow and try to keep up on.

Thanks for the kind words. I truly appreciate it. While there is no real substitute for naturally aged barn boards, this treatment did work extremely well and gave some good results. Thanks for tuning in.

Hey there Kenny. A very interesting show today. I think that the compound in the box is an interesting way to go. I also get the impression that the more tannic the wood is, the more incredible the result ( taking the maple out of that thought). The nearly black effect on the walnut is not surprising and like some others here mentioned, I use Cleaning Vinegar and Steel wool to make an ebonizing solution for black wheels which I make out of oak or walnut. An interesting product. As someone who also bakes a lot, I would say that just like trying to divide a recipe into smaller amounts is a difficult, if not impossible task. I think the solution called for in this product presents the same issues. It's the chemistry of the process. The manufacturer was kind enough to give a 1 liter breakdown that they believe works as well as the 18L mix. I think I would have tried the 1 liter to see if there is a really dramatic difference between the minuscule amounts used vs the manufacturer's 1L recommendation. But all in all, I absolutely agree with you that the outcome went from dramatic to not so much. :-) A great show, once again, sir. You have again introduced us to something new and possibly very valuable in the world of woodworking. Take care and see you on Friday.

I just happened to come across this stuff on amazon and thought I would give it a try. I really like the results and I can see plenty of uses for it in the future. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your thoughts. It's very much appreciated.

Hey Kenny! Recently I was contracted to construct a sign for a local business using preferably barn wood. I had seen several tutorials on how to age wood and one of them used 0000 steel wool dissolved in vinegar. I tried it on several species of wood much like you did here, and the oak took the best "barnwood" effect, again much like yours. The sign is in a place that I frequent so I get to see how it's aging as well as hold up to the elements. So far... so good!
Great experiment and great content.. Thanks Ken!

Another great alternative Tuesday Kenny. It would have been interesting to see 4 samples fully dried and put next to each other as far as the different shades. A bucket of rusty nails/steel give similar effects as a couple of other have said steel wool and vinegar gives great results maybe something you could do a show with to compare to these ones. 👍🏻🇦🇺

That's a great idea Troy. I'd be interested to see the difference between the two methods. One would definitely be cheaper than the other for sure. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for the suggestion. Love it.

Kenny, that is a neat product. It would be interesting to put your samples out in the weather for a bit and see the results. Yes, definitely include it in a project.

Very interesting test. Thanks for sharing. Some years ago I bought some water-based (liquid) stains (four different "colours") and did a similar test.
But I used only two species of wood (small parts of reclaimed beech flooring and pine). The results were quite good, I only used one coat, and for the pine I also dilluted it with
less or more water. Those 4 half of litre bottles of read-to-use stains last forever. The product you showed is interesting as well. I'll have a look if it is for sale in Europe for a reasonable price.

you can also use white vinegar and metal filings to age wood as well.

I'm thinking the higher concentrations of tannins in the oak, cherry and walnut gave the more dramatic effects? The solution you used seems to "tone down" the similar effects of a straight steel wool and white vinegar combination.

I've never used a steel wood and vinegar solution Dwight but it sounds interesting. This is the first time that I have used any kind of aging treatment on wood. Thanks for tuning in.

I am not a fan of the silver/gray of aged wood, I like the original coloring of wood. It did a good job of what it is supposed to do.

I have seen another product, doesn’t require mixing. You apply to the wood and let it sit in the sun, next day it is gray.

I like the natural colour of wood as well Scott but I also like the grey, aged look. This product worked really well and while I am sure that there are plenty of other products on the market, this is the one that I happened to find. Thanks for tuning in Scott and for chiming in with your comment.

Changing subject how is your dust extraction on your router table I am building the same cabinet but with the newest table top and fenceand I was wondering about the dust shroud under the table top is it better to keep it or use a dust shroud at the bottom of the enclosure ?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Месяц назад

Have you watched my video on making the cabinet? I actually left the dust shroud and added a 4" port to the back of the cabinet. The 4" port in conjunction with the fence collection works great. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
