What I love about CaW Code Black is how it’s not just a dark comedic take on educational programming, but also a satire of “code: black” japanese companies. Which are the companies that overwork, underpay, and abuse it’s staff.
Like the body that is the setting is himself working for a “code: black” company which in turn makes him hit the bottle, smoke, and eat unhealthily. Which of course makes his body overwork itself as well.

So I'm not at all surprised that they doubled their subscribers in that time period because in that time window they eliminated free viewing so I don't think it's that weird that they had 5M people who wanted to keep watching that weren't paying before because they could just watch with ads. I know I did that

also they axed there prices worldwide allowing more people to join. It went from $8 (Rs.800) to $0.79 (Rs. 79) and the annual subscription for $10 (Rs. 1000) . Many people I know in India who use to pirate have actually subed and have stayed sub. They have also added Hindi dubs (Indian language) which made many sub, including myself even when I don't really watch in dub but I also like to check how the dub is.

Potential way that CR now has 10mil is because they haven't only merged in funimation but also all the other streaming services world wide they've merged into it.
Additionally there's now a bunch of hindu dubs coming to crunchyroll meaning india is there now. That can easily get them 5mil in a year

If Sony as a publicly traded company makes material statements like this, then they would be in extremely hot water with regulators if they weren't being truthful. And it's perfectly reasonable to count subscribers to both if they are still active subs. Also, CR is winding down ad-supported viewing, so perhaps they got a fair amount of subs that way, plus subs from countries where Sony/Funi had a presence (Australia comes to mind).

    • @goudawgs

I've got to agree with you. Public statements like this have gotten other companies in trouble when the numbers turned out to be wrong, so they should be with in a rounding error of accurate if they don't want to get slapped by the SEC or the FTC in the US at least

The merger with funimation happened 6 days after they announced 5mil subscribers. So it doubling in 20 months isn't surprising
    Anime has gotten more popular.
More people are willing to subscribe now that one service is all they need for the most part. Think about it, if they subbed to crunchyroll, then they'd have to pirate most anime anyway so why just pirate all anime. That was my thinking at least until the merger happened and now i decided to subscribe and watch most of the anime out there. Though hidive is picking up good stuff, like 1 or 2 anime a season i want to watch.
There's more limitations on free content now. So people have decided to just subscribe instead of dealing with that.
They've also decreased their pricing over the world so maybe there's something there.

I’ve read some cells at work spin offs and they have very different qualities, I didn’t liked “cell’s that don’t work” and “cells at work: friends” had a fine enough premise to a slice of life but it didn’t focused on the og cells that we already knew, instead on variations that look similar but aren’t the same characters

Crunchyroll has improved quite a bit since the dark years of decay when AT&T bought and destroyed it. It's not perfect, but just the turnaround in its library of available anime each season is night and day from what it was under AT&T where their customer business model seemed to be "pay more for less every single year." Even the website and service have seen some improvement since Sony took over whereas there was nothing done in that regard under AT&T at all. I straight up canceled my account after AT&T hemorrhaged hundreds of titles from their library and left basic features of their service like the private messenger completely broken for every user for YEARS on end while promising it was going to be fixed "soon" whenever anyone spent the days of effort required to reach any sort of customer service.
I only recently signed back up after seeing their library start expanding instead of bleeding out after Sony took over. Sony is at least putting money and effort into fixing this mess which is already leagues better than freakin' AT&T.

I will say this, compared to HiDive, I rather like watching anime on Crunchyroll, it works and the subtitles are nice to read. Neither I can say for HiDive, which fails on every single aspect as a streaming service, to the point I've paid for it and have stopped using it and am watching said anime it's offered on 'other' websites.
That is to say, I WANT to pay for anime, just not for a crappy service.

I feel like we need to talk more about the current state of the Crunchyroll/Funimation merge. Its been over a year now since that happened, and there is still a huge swath of anime on Funimation that is locked behind a subscription. They said they would be moving it all over, but its been forever since I heard anything about shows getting moved. I'm worried that Sony sees that people are willing to pay double for a Crunchyroll and Funimation subscription, and aren't incentivized to combine the services.

I think the r eason for th e huge leap in subscribers is thanks to the huge cut in price for Crunchyroll around the world last year. I remember when they announced it, a lot of people I know tried it atlest for a few months and some still continue to use it. It's quite the deal too. It went from *$8 (Rs.800)* to *$0.79 (Rs. 79)* and the annual subscription for *$10 (Rs. 1000)* . So I can see why they had an increase in subscribers especially in asian countries where the price dropped a lot.
_*Note: We still don't have the full CR library which is why they charge counties less and they also take into account competitors in the market and charge accordingly. (India Amazon Prime & Disney+ Anual Subscription Rs.1500 = $15)_

(i assume this can be easily verified by reading the article, if the article mentions world wide or something like that somewhere). Crunchyroll has expanded quite a bit elsewhere, so that would explain the difference, not sure if a 5kk difference. It could be they were never the same stat to begin with.

  • @trillxlauren
    @trillxlauren Год назад

I wouldn’t be surprised if Crunchyroll is counting both theirs & Funimations subscribers together.
But also Crunchyroll has been forcing its free subscribers to pay (which is probably increasing their subscriber count). Watching things for free (without a premium plan) has become increasingly harder. For example To Your Eternity season 2 is solely premium content (despite the season being completed for months at this date). Same with the new season of Demon Slayer & Dr Stone. Or they’ll give 3 episodes without premium subscription & then episode 4 onwards will be premium content, smh (Hell’s Paradise is one of them). I really dont like how they’re doing that & seeing how they’re the biggest anime supplier in the west its just maddening to lock all that content away behind a paywall when before you could watch it just a week delayed & a bunch of ads for free.
