The MagiRevo anime cut down a lot on the world building compared to the light novel. It's pretty clear they wanted to cover up to the end of volume 3 within their episode count and so cut out stuff that was more extraneous to explicitly developing that core plot as well as stuff that existed to set up future material

    • @d4nkdesu
      @d4nkdesu Год назад +1

Personally i thought the world building was fine.. but what connected the characters to it really didn't work if you know what i mean.. i dunno if that counts as world building.
The emotional drama was really good.. i could tell that.. but i just couldn't give a fuck about what the characters were going through. And the main arc involving Al just felt stupid to me for some reason I can't point out.
Like it does make sense that Al is doing it for making a country that would treat everyone as equal which in turn means his sister would be accepted as well.. but the actions he takes end up losing meaning when the mc duo are so easily able to do something that would move the world in a similar direction.. without needing sacrifices.. and that too just took them an episode and one big brain to overcome it.. and then considering the big brain was his ex fiance it makes even less sense.. and he knows her capabilities.
Like maybe you can say he got tricked into the wrong path by those researchers of ministers whatever they were.. but we never really get shown how.. and unless we get to see it it just doesn't make sense.
Overall i do like it for the animation and the emotional drama... It just didn't do enough to make me care about what happens to these characters in the future.

Yea, it is a REAL pity how much of the world building and some really badass/great scenes with Euphie berating nobles for insulting her wife :P the anime industry needs to learn to not force itself to "12 episodes" and give as many episodes as the content needs. If it only needs 8? Fine. If it needs 20? So be it. Don't limit shit!

    • @benedict6962

That being said, his complaints still hold weight even if you said them about the source material. They DO still skip most of the assistant work that Euphie presumably does, and we just kind of have to accept that either she caught on really quickly or made the best of not knowing the technical details when presenting to the nobles.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at what the Japanese audience were commonly rating as their top anime of the Winter cour. You'll find the following to be pretty common in videos, people's comments, or in review websites (order does not imply ranking, these just happen to pop up a lot):
    - "Onimai" (Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister!)
    - "Mou Ippon!" ("Ippon" again!)
    - "Danmachi" (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2)
    - "Tenten" (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten)
    - "Trigun" (Trigun Stampede)
    - "Tomo-chan" (Tomo-chan Is a Girl!)
    - "Saito-san" (Handyman Saitou in Another World)
    - "Nagatoro" (Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro 2nd Attack)
    - "Kubo-san" (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible)
    - "Bungou" (Bungou Stray Dogs S4)
    - "Vinland" (Vinland Saga S2)
    - "Spy Class" (Spy Classroom)

So I did enjoy 2 other shows this season.
I enjoyed Tomo-chan Is a Girl because they put real reasons behind the characters' actions for why they act the way they do which, for a comedy anime, I didn't expect. And it's one of the few romance shows that also concludes and doesn't string the audience along forever. Which was more surprising since Chillin in my 30s is that way too!
The other show was Onimai. First off, they didn't need to go so hard on the animation and art direction they did but I'm so glad they did. And while I know people who were turned off due to some of the more ecchi stuff in the first couple episodes due to the main characters age, I think a lot of that had to do with culture shock. As the show went on, the more wholesome nature of it really started to shine and was one of my "feel good" shows this season.

Man, it pains me so much to not see you talking about Bungo Stray Dogs S4 for sequels because - although the second half felt pretty rushed - it was such a wild ride from start to finish, and I'm so glad we don't have to wait another 3-4 yeaers for season 5 that comes out as early as this summer.
Ya know, as someone who has Tensei Oujo as his new anime of the season, and specifically as someone who has read the light novel beforehand, I can definitely see your points about the show and the criticisms you give in this video are actually valid as it stands if we're talking only about the anime. This one sadly fell into the trap LN adaptations have to deal with and receiving an incredibly rushed adaptation and frequently being changed from the source. The light novel does a phenomenal job of tying the magic-system and the lore behind the kingdom into the story and into the characters' personal motivations and convictions (or their ideals, if you will, because in the end this IS essentially a story abuot battles of ideals) which sadly gets very shortened or just straight up left out in the anime, like, in the first half of episode 11 Lumi is supposed to tell them about her backstory and the backstory of how the kingdom was formed in the first place in great detail but none of that ever made it in. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of the interactions with side characters getting merged with others or again just completely left out, the biggest "insult" of that variety being Tilty being the one who found Anis after she ran away when originally it was Tomas the blacksmith (honestly, he is such a great character in the novel and they did him so dirty reducing him to like 2-3 unimportant lines when he was a major factor in restoring Anis and Euphie's relationship with each other...). And as usual, which was to be expected, a lot of the inner monologue of the characters and small scenes getting left out that would've served as nice context to what is happening.
Aside from that, though, the anime still manages to convey most of the important feelings it tries to get through and is overall an experience I can safely recommend to others, especially those who are tired of your typical trope-filled isekai stories that get rehashed like 10 times every season. At this point I can't decide if I actually regret reading the novel beforehand to taint my feelings for the show or if I should just treat them as two completely different entities, because the novel is genuinely one of my favorites and I have read quite a lot this past year. ^^

oh Handyman Saitou is legit great. I think the first couple of episodes being a bunch of little lightly funny sketches got some people to drop it immediately, but I felt like anyone who did stick with it got massively rewarded when it turned out the show knew exactly what it was doing with that, and it wasn't at all what it looked like. It was a brilliant narrative sleight of hand, and turned into a couple of strong, really emotional arcs.

I don't blame you for not putting Magical Revolution as your #1, you're probably not the target demographic for large chunks of it. I was definitely the target demographic though, so it was my #1 by far. However, I do agree they didn't focus on some of the other stuff as much as I'd have liked. 12 episodes just wasn't enough to squeeze in 3 LN volumes, but it did need to cover those 3 volumes to get to the excellent finale, so it may have been better off as a 2-cour season.

Agreed on MagiRevo. As a manha reader, I can't fault it for the adaptation choices it made, given the great character works they have and it's essential for the relationship, but I wish there was more on the actual magical revolution stuff. It's pretty interesting in the manga, and you can see how and why it intersects with the religion so much, and why Anis is so heretical. It's actually really enjoyable exposition, and while I get it should never be the priority, I'm sad nonetheless that it got cut.
Also, given that you like chill shows so much, I can recommend The Angel Spoils Me Rotten. It's honestly quintessential moege, where characters just chill out and banter with each others, while romantic sparks are clearly growing between the two. I didn't have great expectations of it, but I watched it because it kept showing up, and I really enjoy the dynamic between the MC and heroine. Shiina have a pretty sharp mouth while Amane is constantly embarrassed by his friends and family, it's cute. I liked it.

I, too, loved the farming isekai anime. It was definitely very laid back and chill and was a very very good palette cleanser after the extremely intense other anime I was watching at the time.
Although, I will say that the end of the first season felt incredibly rushed and unsatisfactory because we get bigger and bigger time jumps that almost feel like montages and they're incredibly difficult to follow. And I just felt so robbed because it felt like an entire relationship developed off screen and I was literally only seeing the results of it. It made me really want to read the manga.
So, if it wasn't for the rushed ending, I really would have called it my favorite chill anime of the season, but I feel like campfire cooking was better and had a much more satisfying ending that left me wanting more.
You wanna know what my overall top anime for the season is? Tomo-chan is a girl. Every episode was super enjoyable for me and it had such a great ending. Omg. Still can't believe it's based off a short-form manga. It's too good for what it is.

Strongest Exorcist definitely had the most disturbing moment of the season for me, with the summon who could read minds a few seconds into the future eating that guy. It was also something to see Seika go absolutely ruthless at times.
I also enjoyed in 80k Gold where she really tried to be as unobtrusive as she could up until she was almost assassinated, and then just flipped the switch and went full big-stick-diplomacy. Wouldn't say Mitsuha was ruthless as much as very pragmatic, which was also a refreshing change.
