When you're out looking for seeds, turnips especially due to their rarity, and you manage to find a plant do NOT fight any mobs that might aggro to you before you pick the plant or plants. It's 100% possible to accidentally destroy a plant with a weapon strike by accident which will yield no seeds.
Use the 1x1 wood floor as a guide for perfect spacing to get the most planted in an area. I really wish they would just let the plants snap into place though. Farming in this game has been one of the most tedious things I have ever done.
@@eugenec1733 I got into mods as well since this comment. I have been using MassFarming. It lets you plant 25 things at a time while still costing stamina and durability. Huge time saver for one of the more tedious activities in game.
I just use the "Cultivate one square at a time and fill in the blanks" method. Meaning, Cultivate one plot, then plant in the corners. Then, the N/S/E/W directions, filling in the spaces. From there, put one plant in the middle of the cultivated square, and start filling in the remaining spaces. Done correctly, you can plant 25 crops in one cultivated square. Super great method if your base defenses are a little tightly packed. I do agree, though; farming definitely needs a snap-to or grid system by default for crops. Accidentally losing a crop of Turnips during early-Swamp progression is.. a hard thing to deal with.
Just a little note, we are aware that its possibe to find both flax and barley in the same camp. However at the time meshell did this video we had yet to come across one.
The goblin camps are hard if you charge in which is what seems like alot of people automatically do. When playing solo or even with friends, the best bet is to stay back and use a bow to pick off one or two at a time. If they haven't spotted you, only the ones you shoot and hit will agro towards you, leaving you having to only deal with one or two at a time and not the entire camp.
Just one more thing to note: the plants have different space requirements. Carrots are a bit spacious, but the turnips can be planted really close to each other. (Or maybe its just an illusion because the turnip is bigger than the carrot. Some testing is needed here.)
I think someone found out that you'll have to place them 1 small floor apart, and because only where you placed them counts and not their 3d model you can place barley side by side while carrots have alot of space
Just a friendly hint here So if you take the beehives and spread them around your farms you will cause your farms to grow faster (depending what mod you have on but they were talking about add this feature in the base game would but nice)
Better yet: Go in almost naked, get yourself killed a bit outside of the camp, come back, loot and with the corpse run buff you can easily steal the hard working goblin's livelihood.
Tip for farmers: Place 1x1 wood floor on your cultivated earth and place your plants/seeds on the corners. This is enough space for everything to grow and retain even rows. Once you've finished placing everything in your garden, just destroy the floors and place them in a box for your next harvest. Hope this helps!
Very helpful. I had saved 19 Carrot 🥕 Seeds which planted and grew and got 19 Carrots. I couldn’t figure why I didn’t get seeds on harvesting. Stored them then eventually later made Carrot Soup. But, fun in learning. Just have to roam more thru the Black Forest for extra seeds and for the Pig Farm.

Hello, this is Impactednut Autumn or Mundane Impactednut. I’m up to date with the rest of the world and I’m not allergic to the full gamut of human emotions anymore.
my typical startup is if you have 6 seeds with carrot/turnip, do three cycles, keeping half of the last cycle as seeds but do three solid cycles of both barley and flax and then you can start keeping half of the crop from then on. 50 seeds is enough but once you get on a roll you can do about 100~ pretty easily so I tend to just keep a full stack. The reason why you only get two per flax or barley is because they skip the seeding stage altogether. With these I would recommend keeping 50 flax/barley.
I love this content, there has been the largest influx of new players since console drop, players who don’t have access to pc, and are just stepping into this beautiful Viking world that is valheim. I am one of those new players.
When you're planting, plant one and then look over it. When there's a plant in your "line of fire," it'll tell you it's 'blocked' and you can't plant. So if you hold that angle and jog forward, tapping away at the mouse, it'll show as 'blocked' until you get further along, then plant, then show as blocked, and so on, forcing some spacing. Then you can plant as fast as you can move. You'll go through a lot of flax, and a LOT of turnips and barley and carrots, so even if you get a couple too close it'll be a massive savings of time.
Great tip. Here are two more: You can hold E and swing your mouse around to pluck them from the ground instead of spamming E while moving. Move to the center of a group, hold E, and paint your mouse over them. You won't pick all of them up, but you'll pluck them out of the ground so you can run around to hoover them all up into your inventory when you're done plucking. Planting in an offset grid pattern lets you plant the lines closer together. Imagine the corners of a hex grid and plant there, or take a regular grid and shift every other line over half a step.
You might already know this, but you can hold E down, and you will keep picking up turnips as long as you keep mousing over them while you walk in a line, it helps a bit.
My only question after this is if you can grow turnips and carrots in the planes biome? Thinking about where a large farm could be sited that could also breed boars and the larger cow 🐄 like animals. Thanks for the very clear and informative video.
You can plant things really close, even if it says "no room to grow", because once the ones that can grow and mature do so, the others will follow in short order. A bit of a workaround if you're slightly more patient and don't want to dedicate a ton of space to growing crops.
There's a narrow window, though. Unhealthy crops eventually die off and disappear, so if you're doing that you need to make sure you harvest the first crops as soon as they're ready to allow the unhealthy ones time to start growing again before they despawn.
my carrots planted side by side died before some of them matured. There is plenty of space to make a big farm rather than to risk loosing half of your crops due to too close planting. Great tutorial! I'm 3days into the game and thanks to your video I discovered right-click the cultivator opened the planting menu. I also noticed turnips grow bigger when you don't harvest them straight away. Is there a difference? Will they spoil if you leave them too long maybe?
no the turnips do not spoil. you can leave them in the ground for as long as you need to. you can only pick up turnips once they have fully matured. good luck in your valheim adventures.
Not entirely sure. Not sure if that is an option keep in mind that the windmill moves on its own to find the best wind possible. it all depends on the strength of the wind not necesarily the direction since it will find it for you. to be fair i would just walk away while that is processing and go do something different while flour is made.
great video, learned a bit. I just got to plains so that's my next adventure. My wife said you sound like you're from Philly (she's from there). Is she right?
wierdly no one is saying this so i will the plains have the most wind time biome while building the windmill along side taller buildings or land will cause it to slow down(need someone to confirm this one if its an actual game mechanics or a bug)
really? i thought the plains would originally but didn't think twice. we built our cooking stuff in the meadows and just passivly make the flour and go off and do something else. but the whole tower idea is interesting.
I found an area where black forest, plains and meadows meet, built a base big enough so i can grow all crops in the same area. Still havent tried it but does turnips and carrots grow in Plains?
To get good spacing of crops when planting, I toggle the walk button, look down at around 45 degree angle and just walk forward and spam click. You get perfect spacing 99.9% of the time and its super fast. The placeholder of your mouse cursor hovers over the recently planted crop until you walk forward a step and then it "snaps" to the ground (i know it's not really snapping). I can cram piles of crops into a fairly small area without wasting space and it takes like no time at all.
in my experience yes they will mostly from the stronger variant of the greylings while so far the regs only attack if there's a light source in the area(please confirm this part if true or not) while raid events mobs will attack everything in the area
if you are near your crops and a deathsquito comes or a goblin and they try hittig you while you are surrounded by your crops and vegetables they will damage the crop itself so be careful. when in doubt build a trench that goes around your farm. and then the only thing you really have to worry about are the raid from the drakes if that happens or the deathsquitos.
If you have a lot of crops to pick up, you can just HOLD E and aim your cursor around the crops, instead of constantly tapping E to pick up the crops.
if you have a lot of barley or flox to pick up, use an ATGEIR, press middle mouse button and just walk over the cutted flox/barley.
This is the best tip, holy shit. Thank you!
Awesome tip! It took me an *embarrassingly* long time to work that out, similarly with putting wood on the fire or in charcoal kiln. 😅

LOL. philly really? No, I'm not. I always thought my strong southern accent gave it away. Thank you for your support.
I tend to find flax AND barley at fuling camps
Pixeled Monk, is that you...?
eh?
I feel like I was just educated in gaming by amanda tapping in her 30's
wierdly no one is saying this so i will
the plains have the most wind time biome while building the windmill along side taller buildings or land will cause it to slow down(need someone to confirm this one if its an actual game mechanics or a bug)
really? i thought the plains would originally but didn't think twice. we built our cooking stuff in the meadows and just passivly make the flour and go off and do something else. but the whole tower idea is interesting.
if you plant seeds too close together, can you pick them back up? if so, how?
no you can't pick them back up once you have placced them down
So, I finally found flax. Planted it in my farm. Now I realize it won't grow in that biome. How to I pick them up again? Or am i screwed?
u can't u need to grow it in the plains. unfortunately u will have to find it again
me hearing 6 and 9
my brian: Nice
I found an area where black forest, plains and meadows meet, built a base big enough so i can grow all crops in the same area. Still havent tried it but does turnips and carrots grow in Plains?
no
I have to re-cultivate the area after each batch otherwise my crops disappear. It’s happened more than once. Not sure if it’s a bug in the game.
really they disapear? we haven't had that issue yet.
Are mobs attacking your garden? Bores destroyed the first one I had
Late find but still good video hank you.
thank you for your support.
She forgot about ouions in the mountains
To get good spacing of crops when planting, I toggle the walk button, look down at around 45 degree angle and just walk forward and spam click. You get perfect spacing 99.9% of the time and its super fast. The placeholder of your mouse cursor hovers over the recently planted crop until you walk forward a step and then it "snaps" to the ground (i know it's not really snapping). I can cram piles of crops into a fairly small area without wasting space and it takes like no time at all.
right on
The first camp I defeated had both barley and flax. Not trying to be a pain, just pointing that out.
nice we must have completed somewhere between 7-10 camps and they only had one in each. must be our luck
My carrots magically disappeared so I thought I did something wrong... guess not
farming and fighting!
Barley and Flax can be Harvested with the Atgeir.
Enjoy
If I plan the seeds in a random meadow location, will enemies want to attack them? or do I need a moat/fence?
in my experience yes they will mostly from the stronger variant of the greylings while so far the regs only attack if there's a light source in the area(please confirm this part if true or not) while raid events mobs will attack everything in the area
if you are near your crops and a deathsquito comes or a goblin and they try hittig you while you are surrounded by your crops and vegetables they will damage the crop itself so be careful. when in doubt build a trench that goes around your farm. and then the only thing you really have to worry about are the raid from the drakes if that happens or the deathsquitos.
